  • Quite a change of pace for today's video. In this clip, I introduce my friend Bill Hamm, who has spent the last seven or eight years trying to improve his backhand disc golf form. Despite all the hours Bill put in, his speed was hard capped in the mid 40 MPH range, and he struggled to throw 180 feet. For many of those years I tried to help Bill find more distance, and I just couldn't improve him.
All of that changed in early 2023, when I found The Method and taught it to Bill. Though it took a while for some of the mechanics to click with him, things really picked up steam this summer. In the last couple of months, Bill has seen his distance improve almost weekly, and he's now throwing with enough force to get his drivers out over 300 feet consistently. I'm confident he's just begun his growth arc as a player, and he'll be getting drivers up to the basket by the end of the season.

I don't know if you have a background in biomechanics but i enjoy your insights into how you see the ideal swing and how you articulate it.

Really appreciate the comment, thank you! I've been a student of the backhand biomechanics for years, but didn't have many critical insights until The Method taught me the proper brace feeling. I'm very glad you enjoy the content.

Would love some drills on connecting the upper body to lower body. I feel my brace is very solid now but I can't seem to connect the brace with my upper body. You mentioned a stretch or tightness tells you when to throw but not sure I feel it😢

I totally understand this issue, as it plagued me for months once my brace became really powerful too. The trick is focusing on creating linear force, with an arm position that allows you to maintain a biomechanical leverage advantage on the disc the whole time.
I suggest pivoting back to standstills, and focus on keeping your head completely still and centered during your swing. Just get into your one-legged brace stance, rock gently back onto your back instep, and then focus on keeping the swing plane perfectly level and flat, with the ejection out to your side in the direction of the target. The cue will be whether your head position stays still, or whether you're feeling the need to turn your head towards the target in order to swing. If you're maintaining your advantage on the weight of the disc, you should be able to keep your head perfectly level and still.
I intend to make a video about this exact thing soon, which really helped me to combine my great lower body mechanics and my emergent upper body mechanics. I hope to demonstrate this fusion in the video, so stay tuned for that.
      Thanks for watching my channel!
