Chasing Aces at Northpark Hole #1. The Barrage Begins!
This isn't technically an episode of Chasing Aces, but more of an introduction. In this video, I send off a barrage of drives at Northpark's Hole 1 basket. I begin with Envys, then move through mids, and finish up with drivers. I have the assistance of Radar the Dalmatian, who happily chases the discs as they hit the ground. What a hilariously adorable doggo!
I'll continue on this hole until I hit one on camera, then move on to some new holes. Apologies for the terrible audio quality, the microphone wasn't working very well and cut out from time to time. More to come, thank you for watching!

For the last 17 years, I have done a huge majority of my disc golfing on a single hole, on a single course north of Seattle. hey Brian - just wanted to drop a line here and say I've found many of the concepts you've covered in these videos super helpful. in this video specifically, the cue you gave at 9:45 of it being almost like you're getting to run the opposite way off the brace feels like it's unlocked something for me. I'm starting to play around that cue, and actually jumping/exploding backward (relative to the direction of the throw) off the brace to get a sense of the power that can come from that aspect of the throw. thanks for all the work and energy you've put into these videos!

    Few pointers. At 4:20 your reachback hits max way too early, much before your plant foot gets down. You are dibbing your elbow, pulling disc literally from your chin and correcting it self, causing airbouce. Also, your lead shoulder collapses. Try to slow everything down more and just take your time. Accelerate from powerpocket, not from reachback.

    Honestly, i dont think you have that much of a problem with syncing your arm, it's rather that your elbow dibs and disc is is up in your chin during throw and suddenly correct itself, causing a bit of air bounce and inconsistent release of axis torque or in other words your arm kinda crumbles, breaking that "power pocket" or what is the correct term to describe that about 90 degree angle these days :D Basically keeping elbow away from your body and creating space for your disc would probably help a lot. Dipping also You are doing everything correctly without disc at about 1.21 in this video, so just pointing this out if you are trying to sync up your arm with your body. ua-cam.com/video/KmuCVn52sng/v-deo.htmlsi=kZxQkOZPoc0Bu12R&t=187 - here's basically moment where elbow should be more away from body.

    Wow, that was the worst disc golf instructional video I have ever seen. Not only that, but you had to yell fore three times during that video. Additionally, you have people sitting there waiting/watching you while you confuse this kid more and more. They asked you twice if they could go play disc golf and twice you told them to wait for you to stop bragging about what you can do. I would suggest taking this video down and re-shoot it when you have an appropriate place/time to do it. I would also suggest you figure out a different way to convey your message to this kid because he seemed confused as can be, and I can see why. I watched part 1 of your video Bomb with "The Method" and there were a few good points in it. This video bombed badly.

      Sorry for the confusion here, but this whole video was just an impromptu teaching session Jonah requested after we had just met minutes before. Perhaps the title is misleading, but I assure you Jonah was very excited by what I explained to him, and he has continued to work on the balance and stride positions I showed him on the tee. There was no one "waiting/watching" to play until the last few seconds of the video, we were alone down by hole 1 the whole time. As soon as the local (Steve) asked me if he could begin, I wrapped up the video with a few closing words. I'm sorry you didn't find this video helpful, but not every video resonates with every viewer. Hopefully you'll find something helpful in my other stuff. Thanks for watching and for the feedback!

    Hey Brian! So what you're doing is "external rotation of the arm" at the shoulder. Basically your throwing shoulder shrugs up a little, and your elbow points down more. It's actually better now than it was a few months ago. I'm very aware of this problem since I have it - though much worse than you. The funny thing is a couple years ago I didn't have this problem. I am not sure how I started it. What happens is you develop a swing plane that is slightly more diagonally downward when the disc is in the power pocket. You throw so fast that you probably need to evaluate your swing with 240fps slomo footage, and slow down some. I think ultimately you may have to modify the swing at slow speeds, and slowly practice faster and faster until you can use it at your fastest speeds. The key is protracting (bring out) and depressing (lowering) the throwing shoulder more, combined with bringing the elbow up more through more. All that happens through internal rotation. Basically think "down and out" for your shoulder, and "up and out" for your elbow. But it has to be done in such a way as your upper arm doesn't externally rotate, as that is what is causing the shoulder to come up involuntarily, and the elbow down. Keep in mind the rest of your body is absolutely fine. This is more of a positioning issue, than a timing issue. You've created a swing path that just needs a touch more optimization. Otherwise everything else with the swing looks absolutely fine to me, and this ultimately is "icing on the cake" stuff, but it should improve shoulder health. Keep up the great work! 🙂

    • @NickCarroll
      @NickCarroll 17 днів тому

      I've been thinking about this more and I'll just say the priority should be externally rotating the arm less, because I think it causes the shoulder to elevate more. I don't think you're trying to bring the shoulder up, the more I look at your throw. It seems to me that's just a byproduct of the internal rotation, as is the elbow drop. The results of fixing the upper arm's rotation should be a better shoulder and elbow orientation, and the swing path of the disc will improve as well.

    Question about the palm down queue- how do you get the nose angle down while keeping the palm down? Do you find the wrist rolls / supinates into position naturally during the hit?

    • @BrianDiscGolf
      @BrianDiscGolf 22 дні тому

      I think it has to do with the inclination of "swinging flat". You probably already know how to do that, and will be able to hit the right angles when you're producing flat and pure linear force in your swing. A lot of these things are self-correcting, I guarantee you bombers like Eagle and Simon and AB never had to fuck around with nose angle. They just think "throw it there". This intention is actually extremely helpful for head stability, it turns out. The more stable your entire swing platform is, the easier it becomes to swing flat with a controlled nose. I personally grip the disc fairly-lightly initially, and begin to bear down on it right at the peak of the backswing. I apply quite a bit of pressure on the disc with my right thumb, which controls the nose angle well. I've been putting so much pressure on that point recently that I developed a blood blister right against the thumbnail. When you throw hard with the proper nose alignment and angle of attack, you HAVE to grip the disc super hard to hold onto it. Remember, because of the acceleration and resultant energy, you're throwing something that weighs 15-20 lbs when it ejects out. That's a lot of pressure on your fingers. I think most problems with nose angle happen because of poor sequencing. If your leg isn't starting the swing first, you're tugging on the disc ahead of the legs with the imprecise muscles of the arms. This causes so many of the biggest problems like rounding and swooping. It afflicts me too, constantly, as I continue to learn integrating upper and body perfectly. Shit isn't easy.

    • @BrianDiscGolf

      I’m looking at the camera initially to show the head stability, but you can see how my centered head moves forward about 25 degrees at ejection as my shoulders turn towards the target line. Basically it’s moving when it has to, and not before. Not terribly unlike how a golfer’s head remains centered over the ball in golf, and only comes up after the ball blasts away.

    No front heel rotation?

    • @BrianDiscGolf
      @BrianDiscGolf 23 дні тому

      Nope, not at this power level. The energy in my swing and the firmness of the brace keeps me completely immobilized until the disc ejects. And because all the energy in my swing is going into the disc, there is nothing to release off the front leg afterwards. I feel no forward momentum at all after the swing, and simply stand up out of the brace.

  • @gyronation9303
    @gyronation9303 24 дні тому

    Nice video Brian. Comparing how you're moving from the videos of the Method vs this one, your throws look powerful but a little slower. I've been experimenting with different swing paths through. Can I share some things to think about/experiment with? My throw right not consists of 2 pendulums. First pendulum is from my head to my hips, where my hips swing back and forth during the weight transfer. The second pendulum is in the shoulder of the throwing arm. I find that a lot of people, myself included, either jam the throwing shoulder up trying to keep the disc on a level plane, or swoop their pull. It looks like you're swooping/bicep curling the disc which is causing inconsistencies in your release point. My current workaround is to start the disc from your back hip, like sheathing your sword and withdrawing it. The path of the disc is like an upside down swoop, as your elbow moves forward the disc gets pulled to a level plane. I wonder how much faster we can throw staying loose still, but leveraging a more direct swing path that keeps our levers long.

  • @AxisDiscPowers
    @AxisDiscPowers 24 дні тому

    I can say that Clint definitely uses the ground force to initiate hip turn before he does anything else. You can clearly see how explosively his toe points to the ground. On a radar gun I hit 68mph standstill (translate to 70 on a techdisc) and I most definitely start from the ground by getting internal hip rotation of the back leg and clearing the hip forward. But the timing of the upper body and the explosivness of the back muscles at the end of the throw are essential obviously. Standing on one leg, and no coil, disc at the left pec, I can explode 42-46mph on radar. So there is a lot of power to get there. But I would say the standstill probably allows you to build up more energy specifically in the coil.

    The shortest path from a to b is a straight line but the fastest path, especially if we’re trying to accelerate an object in a whip-like manner, is almost certainly something very close to a Brachistichrone curve. This isn’t to say your old upper body mechanics were good or correct, but that a straight path from reach back (or from the pocket) to release is almost certainly much less than ideal.

    • @BrianDiscGolf
      @BrianDiscGolf 24 дні тому

      That's a very interesting observation, thank you for the correction, and for bringing up this unfamiliar term. At some point I need to get a camera vantage point from up above above to track the trajectory of the disc from the apex of the backswing to the ejection point. It could be very informing on what I'm doing right and wrong. For reference, there is a video of Sebastian throwing from up above in the docuseries, in the chapter titled "How it all Works: the Physics of The Method. At around 2:10 in the video, visible here, you can see the vantage point: ua-cam.com/video/jnbrqngDBTw/v-deo.html The disc appears to both accelerate and eject in a line, but it wavers at different points due to the levers of the arm adding energy. I expect those deviations match your idea of a Brachistichrone curve. Check it out and let me know what you think!

As for Jonah, he and I had met literally 30 minutes before I filmed the videos, as I said at the very start. I told him I'd be speaking mostly to the audience, but that he'd be welcome to follow along with the instructions. Your assumption that Jonah "most likely paid to be there with you" is just wrong. Thanks for watching, please let others on the course know how much the system has transformed you.

    • @BrianDiscGolf
      @BrianDiscGolf 28 днів тому

      I totally understand this issue, as it plagued me for months once my brace became really powerful too. The trick is focusing on creating linear force, with an arm position that allows you to maintain a biomechanical leverage advantage on the disc the whole time. I suggest pivoting back to standstills, and focus on keeping your head completely still and centered during your swing. Just get into your one-legged brace stance, rock gently back onto your back instep, and then focus on keeping the swing plane perfectly level and flat, with the ejection out to your side in the direction of the target. The cue will be whether your head position stays still, or whether you're feeling the need to turn your head towards the target in order to swing. If you're maintaining your advantage on the weight of the disc, you should be able to keep your head perfectly level and still. I intend to make a video about this exact thing soon, which really helped me to combine my great lower body mechanics and my emergent upper body mechanics. I hope to demonstrate this fusion in the video, so stay tuned for that. Thanks for watching my channel!

    Hey Brian! You might want to watch the latest video by Bunky on his Discs MD channel: ua-cam.com/video/7_8HhyN8T9U/v-deo.html Reason I mention that is he's a baseball coach working on disc golf form, and he has some interesting information on head position during the backhand throw during a walk-up. Also Seabas22 told me 4 years ago, in response to some comments I made in the disc golf subreddit: "Head turn matches hip/shoulder turn and distance. Head turns a good bit past 90 degrees on longer throws."

    • @BrianDiscGolf
      @BrianDiscGolf Місяць тому

      Hey Nick! Thanks for the recommendation, I took a look at the video and I think there is some great info in there. Head position is yet another piece of the form that should come innately, but can get so screwed up by "dominant side intention". You have to move your head forward as a counterweight when you produce force using premature rotation, so for many people, it's not something that's remotely fixable until they are properly bracing. Once they're bracing and have their arm in the right positions during the swing, a lot of the head stuff self-corrects. Certainly guys like AB and Simon never had to think about where to hold their heads during the swing, they just did what felt most powerful. I think rotating the upper body correctly in sequence and offset with my lower body is one of the main things throttling my current force output. I can throw right around 500 feet right now, maybe a bit over, but some old bad habits are bleeding in still when I throw hard on a tee pad. I've got a video going up tomorrow I shot two days ago that showcases some of this, so hopefully you'll enjoy that. Thanks as always for the great feedback, it's super appreciated!

      Hell yeah, welcome on board! I'm a bit confused by what you mean by "my lead leg chances every time"? It's a pretty static, remedial position that kind of forces brace balance and little else. Most importantly, it lets you begin to overlay new throwing mechanics from a different part of the brain, which is one of the main reasons it works so well.

    • @BrianDiscGolf
      @BrianDiscGolf 22 дні тому

      @@scottahrens382 I think your observations are sound to an extent, though you have to realize we're dealing with changing camera angles and perspective. A better way to analyze form is this: Ask yourself if it's possible to take a bad photo of the form at any point, from any angle. Perfect form is immune to this deficit. It's impossible to take a bad photo of it. My form in the docuseries we shot in October of last year is far far from perfect. In fact, the only way I could really generate power and leverage back then was from standstill. My balance positions were a trainwreck when I tried to add footwork, with about the result you'd expect. Contrast that to Sebastian, who has perfect biomechanics. We shot Sebastian's mechanics in 600 FPS for the video called "The Physics of the Method". In that video, you can see that even slowed down to 600 fps, he is in perfect positions every time. Sebastian is meant to be the paragon of perfect form, I'm meant to be a work in progress. For reference, Sebastian has thrown 84 MPH on pocket radar recently. That's sufficient power to throw a disc over 700 feet with good nose angle. We are about to shoot chapter two this coming month. It's called "Adding Momentum", and it will showcase all the things I've figured out since October that have made my form much closer to Sebastian's. When I throw into the net now, it's almost impossible to take a bad photo of my form. Anyway, forgive the minor inconsistencies in these videos. The person who filmed them and put the doc together isn't a disc golfer, so it's harder for him to spot things that don't quite match. He's gotten a lot better at this since October, and honestly, so have I. The videos I'm posting now to the channel speak for themselves. I am throwing incredibly hard, with enough energy in the disc to fly over 500 feet in an open field. I'm glad you're engaging with the content, and seemingly enjoying that. Thanks for the comments Scott!

    • @BrianDiscGolf
      @BrianDiscGolf Місяць тому

      Thanks so much for the kind words Chas! I realized this ambiguity when I reviewed the video, I'm sorry I couldn't correct it. Basically, what I'm describing is a "palm up" vs "palm down" arm position. Try to think of it as a cable pull in the gym, and think of what position makes you feel the most powerful when you pull on the mass of the disc in a straight line. When you do it correctly, it should stabilize your head perfectly in the middle of your shoulders, and also give you a que of where to brace your off arm against your body. In my case, I feel most powerful with my palm down, and my hand slightly below the plane of my arm up to my elbow. But different people feel leverage in different spots, based on arm length and so on, so it may be different for you.

    Observation of the pro level throws might be right but explanation sounds broscience to me. What you mean with ”inertial center of mass”? 🤔

    • @BrianDiscGolf
      @BrianDiscGolf Місяць тому

      What I mean is that different discs have a different center of mass based on their weight distribution. In order to harness the last lever of the swing properly, which is the energy transference from the wrist to the disc, you have to anticipate where that disc's center of mass is going to move. When you accelerate the disc correctly, in an instantaneous burst of energy, you feel a huge spike in weight in the disc's inertial center of mass. That's way out on the rim for putters, and distributed more evenly along the rim in a fast driver. Midranges, as you might expect, are in the middle. "Inertia", in this case, is the disc's weight resisting your attempts to accelerate it. The heavier the disc is due to acceleration, the more inertial resistance you feel trying to speed it up more. This is a simple explanation that ignores the underlying math, but it's a good description of what's happening. Does that make sense? Let me know if you need any other info.

    So I, a 250lbs man, would throw further with a stand still shot as it acts as an anchor?

    • @BrianDiscGolf
      @BrianDiscGolf Місяць тому

      I think for most people, with most biomechanics, a well-balanced and sequenced standstill will far outpace a drive with an X-step. Your brain won't trust that you can throw the disc hard unless you're perfectly in balance. This requires you to counterweight your center of mass at all stages in the swing. If anything is off-balance, you'll swing softer. One of the reason The Method is so effective to learn proper biomechanics is because it starts you in a balanced frame, with all your weight on one foot. From there, you can maintain your balance through the swing, which allows you to throw the disk HARD and feel all the heaviness and resistance.
