- Welcome to the new weekly edition of What's on the Bench! In episode 38 I start tackling the much used and vintage Blazing Blazer and the horrible stench that is emanating from the transmission. I call that smell "Devil's Butthole."

This Associated motor is screaming for a reunion with a goldpan buggy. 😊
This is cool to see. My mom (yes, I said my mom, lol) still has hers and is still sealed in the original box. For some reason, my dad thought it would be a great 1st anniversary gift for her even though she doesn't have an interest in rc's 😂.
After that as an anniversary gift, I'm surprised they stayed married! My wife would not be impressed!
@Scale Builder's Guild Me also but they're going to be celebrating 42 years of marriage this year. But our family has always been big jokers and always did gag gifts for holidays and birthdays, lol.
@user-eo5cc4pt6o honestly I don't think she'll ever sell it as she knows what it's worth and I think torchering my dad with it still sealed is way more fun for her,lol
This show time lines up perfectly with my morning coffee.
And thats how we start the day in rc heaven ❤😂
That's great! Thanks for watching!
Transmission hardware was stock and the threaded shaft was an option if you wanted to lock the transmission in one gear for a 2 channel radio. Hilux and Blazer had the 540 motor and the Bruiser / Mountaineer had the larger 750 motor. The motor mount and counter gear are the only differences of the two. I had a friend that had an RC10 in 87 and that looked like the same motor that came with the kit
I'd be proud of that solder work.👍🤣
Enjoy the time with that trans. Use bearings when you rebuild it. The silicone was just to keep dirt and water out. I put it between the case edges and it’s a much cleaner look when done.
Nice work. Yeah I do my best to avoid the complete tear down and scrub all the parts thing.....never works though. This is a very cool project though.
Thanks!
I kinda liked it
This is so so cool . I just love watching these retro re-builds. Good old Tamiya 👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it!
The blazing blazer is so cool!! So iconic!! So rare!!! I truly wish Tamiya would rere the blazer.. rip Shodog, your collection is going to the right people including your son
I think he'd be pleased. RIP
Really cool to see an rc that is older then myself 😂😊
I had one of those Associated motors in my original RC-10 in 1987. With the burn your hand resistor speed control.
I still have two of those associated off road motors. I bought mine in the late 90s and ran them in all my 2wd trucks. At the time they were great motors for bashers like the stampede and in my rc10
Very cool!
What an awesome build! We're very lucky that you got that awesome rc truck! I cannot wait to watch this entire process.
Thanks!
I hope you keep posting the progress of this rig. It was very neat to see and I really enjoyed it. Thank you for the update Matt 👍
Thanks, will do!
That spur gear appears to be the same spur gear used in nearly every vintage Tamiya from the 80’s lol
A week of Monday's, and other than finding the 2.2 Vanquish wheels I was hoping for yesterday, Thursday is turning out to be another Monday. Didn't we already do Groundhog day ? Love that Clear electronics box, erector set meets robotics experiment, Classic Old School. Matt's RC Museum, old memories restored 🤓
Groundhog day is one of my favourite movies! Especially when he gets into the tub with the toaster and toast!
That old white lithium grease is so gnarly. I can smell it through the screen. The second you pulled out the transmission I was having flashbacks about that stuff. I used to use it on my BMX bike bearings.
Very cool episode. Cool to see how things were built all then. Not to mention how good it looks for 1979
My wife says I look good for 1977! 😂
@Scale Builder's Guild well thats what wives do. Iv officially entered the grey beard group.... only 32... not happy about that. Just a hint of salt haha.
My wife says she loves it.
Hahahahaha.
Flannels really help the young factor though.
Big green globs of greasy grimey gears and such, axles links diffs and cups, and I forgot my spoon 🎉🎉🎉
😂
If you need a driver figure it is still available from Tamiya as the same figure is used in the Bruiser, part number 54416.
I am amazed that it still works. I have a couple old Tamiya kits that just sit in shelf due to no parts. Just hit me to try and 3d print some
0:14 lol "episode THIRTY EIGHT" another seemless edit Matt.😆
The Toyota highlux was one of my first RC,s and I'm pleased to say I still have it, I still have trouble getting it to change gears 😢😂 I also use my small sonic cleaner on older parts it seems to work fine 😊
"I always like to keep my audience riveted" sheriff bart
🤘😁🤘y'all have a badass day🤘🥞🤘
😂
That type of cleaning would be well done with an ultrasonic cleaner! Mine works absolutely fabulous!
Just arrived today!
You are going to like it! I use it all the time now, for the ease of it I clean everything when I take it apart for maintenance! And the cow rc cleaning concentrate is good to use in it!
And on another note I have used oil in it to soak and infuse into bearings. I have revived a few with that method!
I have not seen one of those before. Look forward to more videos with it. That is quite the machine!!
Thanks for watching and stay tuned!
YOUR AA'S ARE UPSIDE-DOWN 😂😢🎉
I need some inspiration for painting my Sand Scorcher body.. Any ideas much appreciated 😊
Do you have any favourite brands? Start there and use their colour schemes!
Parts tip, at office and home decor shops they sell open mesh pencil cups, and I use them to wash soak small parts. Solvent/cleaner in small container, dip, soak, swish, make it just a tiny bit easier ✌
Thanks for the tip!
I have the Toyota Hilux that was on this same platform. I got it out of someone's trash years ago and it just sits on the shelf. The knuckles are broken on the front and it's missing the bed. I'll send it to you if you need a donor chassis.
Thanks!
i love episodes like this. Keep up the great work.
Thank you!
That bell crank arm is an inspiration to RC4WD :)
Absolutely love this kind of thing, now I know what all that degreacer was for, can't wait to see it done.....fnx fa sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video, can't wait to see it all back together cleaned up 👍🏻👍🏻
Memories of my second RC build (Blazing Blazer)! The first was the Toyota Hilux 4X4. Mine are on the shelf now and are fully intact if you want pics of what stuff is where. I am willing to provide information to you Matt just reach out! The mix of screw head types is how they were originally built. The shaft on the top of the transmission is stock and there is a bracket from that to the bottom spring loaded shaft for the 3 gear shifting. Looking forward to your full restore! Nice challenge ahead!
Awesome! Thanks for the tips!
It was interesting watching you disassemble the transmission. I decided not to take apart the one in my Mountaineer. I didn’t want to mess it up, and it’s working properly
Imagine no advances in RC were made and you had to use that transmission in a comp rig lol. Love the series 👍
Terrible!
Very cool and beautiful model my friend!) 🤩💥💯👍💪👏✨💫🌟
Thank you! Cheers!
Really cool looking and interesting rebuild. Honestly, I miss the assembled knife bit. Ya got to get another. Lol
Please keep doing videos on this! Be interesting to see your approach. I picked up a vintage bruiser for $60 last year locally and plan to restore and refresh it
Thanks! Will do!
I think this needs to be your class 1!
Great show I’m excited to seee it finished sir
Stay tuned!
Loved this one. Deep dives on old rcs are simultaneously as laughable as they are impressive.
I used that deagreaser in an ultra sonic cleaner while rebuilding a few paintball guns. Was suprised when it took the anodizing off of a couple parts.
I got my ultra sonic cleaner today!
The "thirty eight" overdub was so smooth no one noticed. :D
😂
@@scalebuildersguild My how you've groan over the years good sir.
More Blazing Blazer please 🍻
That motor came from the original rc10 if you bought the sport rc10 kits you got that rather cumbersome hard to build never really works right green resistor speed controller back before the days when there was electronic speed controllers. But anyways the motor comes from that rc10 kit gold tub chassis
You're correct!
The transmission was supplied prebuilt and wasn't intended to be dismantled. The silicone always looks a mess because you were supposed to smear it on the outside of the case instead of putting it between the joints. The rubber bungs are thereto allow you to lubricate the gears. The Tamiya instructions don't even tell you how to put it together. A search for Bruiser transmission manual should find the Bruiser Service Manual from Kope and a Tamiya style assembly manual on Tamiya101.
The motor is typical of a "rebuildable" 27 turn "stock" motor. After you scrape as much silicone off as you can, use denatured alcohol to remove what's left. I like watching high speed playback of wrenching, I don't find it to be boring at all!
10:45 Panning for GOLD!
That is a very interesting rig. I’m 40 and I can’t say i remember it lol
Nice Dad cap😂❤
Mineral spirits and an ultrasonic cleaner would clean it up easy.
I'm getting an ultrasonic cleaner tomorrow!
Put the parts in a sealed container, we always use an old canning jar, with the solvent then you can fill the cleaner with water and not ruin your equipment with solvent.
I suggest getting a heated cleaner and set it for about 180°F, 2-3 cycles should have those parts looking brand new.
Cool I personally this stuff! 😁👌
Nice video man 👌👍
Watched plenty of great rc content this week lmao
Thanks a lot, I am older than the Blazer, rub it in my face!
Motor is $20-$40 on ebay used though, then of course some that people think are worth $100+
“Stale vomit”😂
The ultrasonic cleaners work great.
Totally! Just got one on Friday!
Noooo those transmissions where not ment to come apart! Came preassembled from the factory , the motor looks like a RC10 replacement motor and was about $30 back in the day.
You're right! It's a RC10
I know why you thought you didn't get anything done this week....you tried skipping #38. You now have a whole other week!🙂
😂
Cool car
No knife no like… I’m trying a strong arm approach
Hex was stock on all gear boxes. Like ur sand scorcher
I love the dubbed episode… 38… at 0:15
No soup for you!!!!
Its a dirty job but somones gotta do it
Oh look, you've got the same mealprep containers...but your soup is a bit different 😅
😂
Lmao 😂yep me to Matt
Totally disagree, super cool that you put time and effort in this old RC! Going to be super interesting watching this project. But I shall not lie, I’m not jealous 😂
I don't think many people are jealous!
There's 2 of those associated motors on eBay right now, ones $35 the other $40 (us dollars, so probably like $100 cad😂)
Thanks for the tip!
The motor may have come from an RC10?
It did!
Hi matt! Nice restoration i like tamiya old stuff! Would you keep bronze bushings or upgrade to ball bearings?
In some places I’ll keep the bushings to remain period correct. In others I will replace!
Looks like a stock 540 27 turn speck motor. Super early addition?
Aren't the team associated branded motors now branded as reedy?
Not bad!, But Com-on Matt Get get your hands in there. It’s not so bad. I’m sure you’d seen worse. That probably cost as much as the StirlingKit model they brought back.
Isn’t that the same motor from flying cars 🤣
😂
A little off topic here but if you were going to build a replica of Parnelli Jones big Ollie bronco what chassis would you choose?
Probably a GCM CMAX. Perfect for a Bronco!
3D print gaskets for that transmission?
No tolerance for that unfortunately!
LoL, what episode is it!?
38 ! LoL
Is this SGB "Flex Seal" truck?
😂
Here's a deal for you Matt, I'll rebuild your car and you rebuild my lathe mill combo from the 80s, at least you have instructions.
Ha!
But it is cool
They don’t make em like that anymore 😅
I have an original Tamiya 959 body set in the box. All decals and plastic body parts. If interested message me
Are going to upgrade electronics or keep it old school?
I'll do modern, but simple!
Hey Matt, I have an original hilux in good condition, if you are interested let me know
Always interested! Email me if you like, matthew@scalebuildersguild.com
Wtf!? Where is the rest of the video? I was getting ready to see some greasy toothbrush action, and you just wave bye bye. Also, I'd like to point out that not only did the truck have an Associated motor, but it also seemed to have the bushings from the Sendero SE lol.
Stop apologising that it's a boring video! Looking forward to seeing restored to its former glory.
Thanks!
Tamiya grease 🤮
