The idea of returning to the UK to navigate some scenic canals on a narrowboat for a holiday is something I often toy with. The reverse culture shock will likely be overwhelming. (I've lived in Italy for many years.) Have you guys read The Wind in the Willows, by Kenneth Grahame? Surely every narrow boat enthusiast should have a copy!

Michael just a tip for you. I fitted a battery isolater to my car as i dont use it much now. When you leave turn the isolator off. It kills all electrical power, and wont start untill its turned on again.. saves you changing batteries all the time.
You can get a battery booster, not cheap but does the job to start a dead car.
Ever thought of putting car on the boat, they were built for cargo. Or get a motor cycle

Hi Jacks and Michael, if i had to choose to keep or sell the car i would sell it. I would put the money into a seperate account along with the money for the Rego and insurance, train bus fares fuel etc and use that money to get a rental car of the right size to do the jobs you need to do. They may even drop it off to you. Cheers Eric B from NZ

Suggestion: hire a car when you need for a week or so or Uber for short trip errands. I really like your lifestyle on the narrowboat. Nothing like that here in Texas: everyone drives and families have 2 or more cars. Very expensive but necessary here.

Writing from the US, I’m probably atypical amongst my countrymen in thinking you should sell the car. My wife’s English, and we go often to visit family. The public transportation is fantastic, and, really, you can get everything delivered easily these days. Fuel costs, the hassles of maintenance, insurance, parking, not to mention the stress of driving, fear of breaking down-even if you have roadside assistance…. Why bother? Loved the travel log and the art exhibition. We hired a narrow boat in Wales and I’ve been half-seriously trying to talk my wife into selling out everything and narrow-boating for the rest of our days ever since.

Grand vlog by you both, whether it be the impressive trees or delights of Oxford. Best you sell the car and free your spirits to the trials of the cut. How much would you save from no tax, no insurance, no MOT, bus fares, train fares and coffees? Surely a weekend hire car or city-to-city travel three times a year would be much less? I had 10 litres of engine oil delivered to Dukes Cut by Halfords using WhatThreeWords. Keep up the good work. See you both soon.

Difficult one. I keep my pick up close to the boat and find it incredibly useful for food shopping so I can go to Aldi instead of expensive local shops near canal and to pick stuff up for boat which I could never do without it. Like I just bought a load of hardwood to build cratch and there is no way I could have got that without my truck. I also enjoy the walk back to get it too but I am never more than maybe 15-20 miles away.. Would be lovely not to have to worry about it but right now it’s useful and I found last year in mid winter in the middle of nowhere it was nice to have the ability to get to civilisation without a long walk in the snow and ice. You guys seem to manage well without your car for very long periods so maybe it’s time to shift it and use bus or train when you want to travel. Good video thanks.

    • @cruisingontheborder
      @cruisingontheborder  2 роки тому +2

Hi Andy. Tend to agree with you about our car. You have long walks to get back to your pick up, sometimes 15/20 miles? That’s a long way! They do come in handy as you say. We go see relatives and do big shops when we have it close so that’s good. The shops on the cut are as you say expensive and lacking in choice.

If you're not using your car for work related stuff, like Julie of Weir on the Move - for instance, then what exactly do you need it for? Second point would be where are you leaving it? Looking at where you parked it last time, it was a minor miracle it was ok. Personally, I think it's time you got shot of it. It would only take one fuck up with the location you parked it at for it to get totally wrecked and that's your whole investment gone.

      Hi David.
It’s strange that when you mention kidney stones, so many people say they have been affected by them. Sounds horrendous. Scott was in a great deal of pain but he’s ok now thankfully. 👍

Higher one when you need it, you’re nowhere near 70, apparently then you can’t

Hi Stephen thanks for taking the time to message us, we really appreciate it. Great idea it is something we have considered in the past. We just love our car, it's got an amazing boot space so good for transportation of items we need for the boat.

How about two electric mountain ⛰️ bikes? Works for us very well.

Hi Sailing EU, yes we have thought about electric bikes. It can be tricky finding a place to store them on the boat. Which type do you have? Thank you so much for all your great comments. Hope you continue to watch and enjoy our channel 😀

We’re in the same situation, sell the car or keep it! We’ve had a good offer for it but I can’t walk very far as I have hip and heart problems. We would save the RAC cost, tax, insurance and yearly service. Really, I suppose, it’s a no brainer, we should SELL IT. We can always hire for the odd occasion we see family or friends. It will seem weird, having had a car for the past 50 years 🤪

We are of exactly the same mind as you , we sound sell but can’t face the idea of not having a car after all those years with one! Hopefully you are enjoying our channel. 👍

@@cruisingontheborder yes, we are 👍. Maybe pass on the cut at some time. We are off to meet my Daughter, Partner and Grandson at Great Haywood at the end of October as they have hired a narrowboat for a week and then heading to Llangollen for Christmas.

Just thought I’d tell you, we sold the car! It does feel strange as we can’t just suddenly go off somewhere. I’m still buying things that are not easy to carry and we were having them delivered to our boat builder (he hasn’t minded taking in our parcels, he’s found it quite funny the amount that keeps turning up) but now we’ve moved, it will take some getting used to having to sort deliveries out. Still novices at this lark lol. We’ve taken the plunge (excuse the pun), will you? 🤣🤣

      Hi Julie.
Thanks for your comment. That seems to be the idea from most of our viewers. It’s difficult to give up your car though when you’ve had one most of your life. But we guess it makes sense.
