THE MOWERMEDIC1 25+ YEARS EXP DIAGNOSING AND REPAIRING LAWN EQUIPMENT, GENERATORS, WATER PUMPS AND ALL TERRAIN VEHICLES, HIS GOAL IS TO HELP THE DO IT YOURSELFER PERFORM REPAIRS EASILY THROUGH HIS DETAILED VIDEO TUTORIALS, AS ALWAYS PERFORM ALL REPAIRS AT YOUR OWN RISK, ALWAYS CONSULT A SERVICE MANUAL FOR SPECS AND PROCEDURES, HAVE A GREAT DAY!!
I always call the customer and explain that if both coils are old and only one has gone out that the other one might fail soon. I also tell them how much labor time they will be charged if we only change one and have to do the job over again for the other coil. I leave it up to them after explaining buying two coils now is cheaper than having to do the job twice and paying the labor cost twice.
It may not be advisable but I take a garden hose, I cover the carb intake and starter motor and clean the engine with water. If it doesn't get clean enough with that then I use a spray cleaner and spray the engine, let it soak and then hit it with the water hose.
Great tip on the self tapping screws 👍
Another informative video. good job. I would do the same and let the customer know that many times when one goes bad the other is not far behind. As others have said let them know the costs involved so they can determine if they have the money to do both. Just keep track on the bill of their decision.
On my own equipment for my company since im in there anyway i would go ahead and replace both of them. I still enjoy your channel you are growing because of you. You are one awesome guy in my book as you know I have been around since the old days LOL and not planning on going anywhere. Keep up the great work and videos. God Bless you and your family!!!
Definitely change BOTH coils (speaking from a customer perspective). Great video THANKS !!! My Kohler CH740 appears to have that problem after only 240 Hours.
I advise replacing both of them to eliminate an unecessary comeback because the other coil was on the verge of failing.Have the conversation with the customer about this and note it on the workorder.
Thanks for the advice on the coil mounting screw mine came out kinda hard but worked it back and forth.
Both coils. Most of the Kohler command twin I repair are on grain augers, so access isn't an issue, but teardown is teardown. What the customer saves on only doing 1 coil, the 2nd coil will pay for itself in labor savings.
What would you say the problem would be if neither cylinder have spark? Both coils bad at the same time. It ran fine last year. Any info would be appreciated
In regards to your question . I would strongly suggest you replace both coils . After the bad coil is replaced , it's very little additional labor to replace other one.
Call the customer and explain the situation, and advise if they go for both that great. Now, if they say no tell them it will cost more if you have to come back out and get it. Most of the time they will go for both
Man your video saved me a lot of $$$$ and heartache. I have a Cub Cadet 3206. The tractor cuts like a dream, but I always dread working on it. The engineer that designed it must have been mad at somebody, or was just plain evil!!! Im taking your advice and am replacing both coils. Using genuine Kohler coils, don't want to do this repair again. Thanks again Bro!
There is an old story that says that "an engineer caught his wife having an affair with a mechanic and they have been trying to get us back every since then" !
good question. If it was my machine being worked on, I would go ahead and replace both while it is open.
But it is the customers call because its their $ and they may be planning to not keep it for long.
I have this discussion with customers fairly frequently. In my experience the other side always fails quickly.
You explain things very well
I always learned they work together replacing together. They’re the same age. They have the same amount of wear on them. Save yourself the time replace them both while you’re in there.
Great video. I have a kohler CH25 and replaced coils. Not firing. Would the stator have anything to do with it. If not can you show the wiring diagram on ignition
I advise do both of them, but they are on a tight budget I usually ring out the other coil with an ohm meter to see if it is anywhere near spec. If the customer does not want the second coil, I note it on the service order and explain that only the new coil is warranted. I had a coil the other day out of spec and the machine would not start. Sometimes it does not take much with electric stuff. Thanks for great video's.
Great video. My GT2550 is overheating and shutting down after 30 minutes of use. After a lot of reading, it appears to be a coil. I will replace both of them while everything is torn down. Thank you for good advice. I just subcribed to your channel.
How do you know witch way to go if you don't have full power at .010 gap and how far do you go? What if the coil mounts are to long for the engine your working on? How do you find a replacement? How far will the SAM throw the timing off with the kill wire disconnected?
you replace both coils at the same time . Do you replace 1 spark plug or one wiper blade ?
Sparkplug grease... the aluminum colored anti seize, after you blow the chips out the holes😮. If nothing else grease...🎉🎉🎉🎉
Great video mowermedic1 as always thank u
Very helpful, I have a 522XI which this applies to it too, can you add to your tags
Yes always
I always replace the other coil also. Fix it once the first time and be done.
My man...thank you bud for your instructional video. Looks much easier then I imagined. Although I don’t have the metal gaper but will use two business cards instead.
Use only 1. 2 is
Too thick
THEMOWERMEDIC1 got it
Show a video on how to check 4 terminal Honda coils
Can’t find information on testing them
I appreciate the tips! Keep 'em coming! ... Jim
great video, just what my issue it - hope to fix it this weekend. Thanks -
Inform and advise based on your knowledge and experience, then let the customer make the call. Hopefully everyone is always learning ! Sometimes, if we are astute, we can even learn from others mistakes without making the same mistake ourselves...other times one's own stubborn nature can get in the way of the "learning from someone else's mistake" part !!! Peaced. BTW I asked a question about a Bolens 22" cut with a 5.5hp B&S self-propelled many moons ago(been a couple of years now !). Did you ever work on a Bolens ?
Are these directional? I just installed mine and then learned about some being installed a certain way
I always tell the people fix mowers for that if they have a 2 cylinder mower with 2 coils and one fails that they should change both. I have the same mower in this video one failed and i went ahead and changed both
Yes
I always Let the customer decide after I I explain the pro and cons
hey bud great video and it helped alot but would like to know what to do if i stripped one of the bolts while putting the coil on
Not a tough choice, if you're a professional, replace both! Just like head gaskets on a twin. You do BOTH.
Replaced the coil on a Kohler command v twin vertical mount. I bought a cheap aftermarket coil. The coil arrived without any instructions. My questions is which way does the coil mount? Is the kill connector on the top or bottom. How can I test which way it goes. Seems to run the sam either way. By the way havent seen a new video in a while. Hope all is well with you and yours.
Did all this . All good but then on full load one cylinder drops out and then eventually kicks. Ack in. Driving me nuts.
I reather go head replace both an be done I got a cub cadet 2206 I'm just going to replace both when do it
For better accuracy you might clean the corrosion off the magnet first, and then set the gap.
I usually clean magnet and then spray it with a light coat of some type of clear coat finish like lacquer. That will keep it from rusting again.
neutrodyne I agree, in the video the magnet looks pretty crummy. To be accurate on setting the gap I thought it would be better to start off nice and clean..
Could you tell me which kohler motor that is l need a v twin kohler that has a shaft out of the flywheel side ' just like the motor on the cub cadet you was workin on mine is a CH640-3120 but l'm looking for a replacement for mine and l noticed that one has a shaft coming out the flywheel side also ' thanks in advance for any info
I hove a gravely with a kohler confident engine that died while mowing on a hill. Now I have no spark at plugs from either coil. What are the chances that both coils went out at the same time?
Good work, man. Can you direct me to a vertical Kohler 24.6 hp coil replacement ? Like the John Deere has ? Thanks,
Dead in the yard in Cape Coral, FL
Thank you for the advice about removing the coil screws. I would have gone in with an impact gun.
Pull the whole motor out to fit a impact wrench in there ?
Dont think u can fit an impact in there unless you have a right angle impact
@@MrMrsregor I was trying to say that I would have been lazy and used an impact. I'm glad I watched this video before I replaced my coils.
@@NINrod_M oh yea, makes sense. I have the same bad habits... Probably good that my impact did not fit in there
I've got a Bad Boy Magnum MZ54 Zero Turn mower with less than 150 hours on it. A few weeks ago it started bogging down, like it was starving for fuel. However, if I let it sit for 20 minutes, it would fire right back up and run for 30 min or so and then the cycle would continue. Bad fuel or clogged fuel filter doesn't explain this. Coils?
Inadequate fuel supply most likely
I would try to get the customer to replace both and show them how much of a job it is to get to the coils and advise to change it while it's opened up
Thanks, great instructions !
I haven't seen any videos on the single cylinder kolher with the dsai igition coil. I'm working on one that's bad. CV 16 S. I dont want to spend 200 dollars for another dsai module .
Swap it out with the updated ignition kit
Have you ever had both coils fail at the same time on a vtwin kohler.
Tell customer that they usually both go at same time and suggest they replace both while ur in there. Pay a little now instead of alot later
Great job thanks
What is the model you are working on I need that rear little drive unit coming out of the back of the motor
change both for suew
Thanks for the info
Do you have a carb repair video on this motor by any chance my same cylinder is running lean and I’ve treated the fuel and drain the tank changed my filter but she still intermittent on the one cylinder
Maybe the valve lash is off a bit on the #1 cylinder due to the potential overheating problem.
Ohe question of replacing1 or 2 coils, give the customer the option. If he decides not to replace the other coil simply note that on the repair ticket in case the other one goes out.
Just like knee replacement you can have both done at the same time, yes I know a friend who did it
,
I recently bought a used cub cadet with twin cylinder kohler. It is running but I noticed that one coil wire is missing. What kind of problems have I bought? If I replace both coils should I be ok.
I need your help. I have a ex mark lazer x I’m having a crank no start problem I check the spark is good I got fuel I. Shot starting fluid in it still doesn’t start up u got any tips
I just traded for a Lincoln Ranger welder with Kohler CH730 23 HP.
The engine was running on one cylinder only. After pulling the valve cover on the non fire cylinder I found a broken push rod. Both valves are free and each cylinder is measuring 155 p.s.i. I attempted to run the engine on the other cylinder. It is back firing through the carb.
Do you have any videos on this topic?
Thank you and new subscriber👍👍

I have a Kohler command I think it's 25 hp. V twin its on a commercial pressure washer. Im looking for a video of someone having the same issues im having so I can fix mine. It started by not wanting to start. I changed carburetor fuel pump filter etc. Seems to have whitish blue spark. But it is really hard to start. Like it takes a bunch of effort. Mayne 20 minutes I can get it to turn over. Once warm it runs but after a short period of time it looses power and wants to die out. By chance before I changed carburetor I put some trans fluid in and that seems to make it run good for awhile. Even with new carn though same deal have to toss some trans fluid in to get it to run ok. I checked valves and pushrod they seem ok. I mean if they out of spec it's not easy to spot with the eye. Only 500 hours on engine. Im stumped but not a small engine tech. Can anyone point me in a direction of what might be going on?
Hi Joe here I have a kohler command ch22s in my cub cadet. It is running on one cylinder each coil has 2 wires that goes into like a CSI box.
How can I test to find the problem. Thanks Joe
In one frame the blower housing is off, then later it's on . This is the only abstraction about the job. One bolt won't come out . It's against the frame adding 2 more dimensions to the job . Deck belt and engine lift.
twosence fromcleveland then you must be doing it wrong
@@THEMOWERMEDIC1 plz tell us how you removed the lower right blower cover bolt. It hits the frame before it clears the hole.
@@THEMOWERMEDIC1 oh, and thank for replying.
On the kohler rebuild manual,it says the right side coil goes on with the kill tab facing out and on the left side the kill tab faces in. This is infact how the old ones were installed on mine when I took it apart. Are you familiar with this?
I thought was other way around ? Not sure. But yes one goes one on outside one on inside of coil ( kill tab )
I usually call them and let them make that call.
Yes sir I have a kubota zero turn with a kohler 25hp vtwin and I am assuming one of the cylinders is dropping because one of the plugs doesnt get any carbon on it like the other and sometimes i feel like i can hear the one thats not firing cycle . any advice or clue to what this may be ? Great videos by the way .ps the motor sounds really good and has plenty of power so i am confused .
I give them a heads up, their choice.
It depends on their financial situation. I will tell them what I'd do, but if they're hurting in the wallet sometimes they will just want to fix the one. Where I live not everybody is well off financially, and sometimes they just want the bare minimum to get back to cutting bahiagrass, especially this time of year. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.
My mower always smokes just a little when I first start it after it sits for a day. What could cause that. It's just a little puff of smoke right when it starts and I always have to choke it to start but then it runs good.
I used a sheet of paper, is that to thin?
Replace both coils. The other coil could go out at any time
I am a firm believer in if it ain’t broke don’t fix it
Great Video,
Great video. My problem is the engine won’t stop, it keeps running until I unplug the spark plug boot. I looked at the kill switch assembly and it looks fine I’m thinking the kill wire from the coil. What do you think and how I can diagnose the kill wire coming from the coil. Thank you
Did you fix your problem yet?
With the engine running, you can connect a wire from any metal on the engine to the kill TERMINAL on the coil. If that kills it, then you have a wiring problem. If that does NOT kill it, the coil has a (rare) broken wire internal.
If you have an ohm meter, with the engine off, measure resistance between the kill wire and any metal engine part. There should be zero (or close) resistance, meaning that kill wire is properly switched to ground through the ignition switch.
Very often, the ignition switch connector is VERY dirty and simply needs cleaning.
Also the ignition switch can simply fail, and needs replacing.
Good luck.

Can I see some mower Drive Chain

cool good video looking foward to checking out channelas i too have a mower that wont goer looks to be like that heck it might be that one as it was gave to me from criglister on{y hour away cant get people down street get rid of theirs well theirs does run right. lol but i got cub new battery new starter seat is captains kind no spinny locked up tight and its a shame because this mower looks great to be old as it is deck was washed out when cut looks like it anway it was kept in garage its heavy duty 2452 or 2542 gt the ole side shaft kohley 20 hp believe try get it going for pops hes up in 70 and wont quit so im put this rider in rotaton if can what few things look for not busted case no oil leaks looks low on oil though say low oil and hill i seen where they cut mans 18 year old son was cutting and it quit all he knew and i believed him to my buddy lives down that way had him go look at it and he said looks good boy wouldnt help him put it in ranger and i was hour away he wouldnt hold it till got there if someone else came it had address on listing made my buddy sit there till got there lol well thats enough for now thanks for the imfo video
I work on small engine I would change both
I love your videos, @THEMOWERMEDIC1 and hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that gaping tool you are using does not result in a 0.010" gap, but a nearly 0.014" gap, which is outside of Kohler specs on everything I have ever worked on.
I always first use a piece of fine sandpaper or scotch-brite, to rub off the old rust build-up on the flywheel magnet. Then I rub a drop of oil on it, to postpone future rust . Then I use a piece of brass shim stock, that is about 1" x 6".
I would replace it now , to avoid it later . The few dollars extra is not worth the time lost redoing the whole process
I would suggest both coils be replaced.
I would the Customer that it would be ad Good idea to replace Coils now .
Ot will hor cost more Labor wise
But save cost rather
It other one go out
Let the Customee make the Choice when his trust .
And they'll retuen
I have toro zero turn with low compression on one cylinder. I replaced both coil but it did change. Can anyone help.
do the job right the first time and let the customer know what is going on".a stitch in time saves nine".your customer should appreciate it.
Give the customer the info and let him decide as younsay
replace all
how do I find Part 1?
I replace both.
I just present the customer with the option, while i have the motor torn down. the decision is solely up to customer. i do NOT try to upsale anything !
Replace both no question
leave it up to the customer, however, give him or her the entire story . The other is working but might go at any time.
Replace both coils
Replace both. More money for the part.
i just got censored so much for u tube
How does a bad coil, cause engine to run hot?
Timing
@@THEMOWERMEDIC1 thank you, did not know if lean or coils. engine is kohler 23hp horizontal.
Home shop-I never fix nothing unless it's broke.. five minute job..
In my worthless opinion, I would replace both coils for down-the-road insurance....
No cards popped up.
May not work on all platforms. If not hit up my ignition system playlist
