- Today's video I test out GrimDoomer's OPL build that lets you drag and drop PS2 game files onto an exFAT hard drive, and then using a modified OPL build you can see the games and play! No need to use third party programs.
Note: At this time, cannot use this with freehdboot at this time as you must format the hard drive initially before adding game files. Good news you can use your large extra capacity SATA hard drives (i.e. 2TB and higher)!

Always great to see your videos, especially in 2023. I remember watching you when I tried to put fmcb on my ps2 but failing to realize I needed a MC adapter or a required game I had to be about 11 or 13 years old

Before I get started, Trust me I know that this version of OPL is still in the works...
Anyways... You made this version of OPL sound really good... and it may be really good... to those that haven't already worked with OPL in the past...
This new OPL version
Pros:
1. Can drag & drop ISO's to a an exFAT formatted HDD/SSD with a capacity higher than 2TB's (no 3rd part programs)
2. Supports more than 1 USB at a time
Cons:
1. In Settings, Default Menu... When switching this option, it does not save... I have tried to change "BDM Games" to "HDD Games" and it will not save the setting. When you save, go out & go back in it is set back to "BDM Games".
2. No support for POPStarter
3. You also stated that it was cool that this build of OPL recognizes more than one method... and it does... 6:57 But it already did this before... Only difference is now it has "Less Options" to choose from than before... In the main menu, OPL had "5" options to choose from... USB Games, ETH Games, HDD Games, Apps & PS1 Games (AKA POPStarter) I watched/used your videos to set all of that up... Now this version of OPL has... USB, SMB, IDE & Apps. Even the way it's titled "SMB" & "IDE". Also if you wanted USB Games, HDD Games, Apps & PS1 Games on your main menu you could select them and leave ETH Games not selected & you would only see the ones you selected on the main menu... This OPL has no option to remove anything that you aren't using from your main menu.
4. Themes don't work correctly
5. I tried some Apps & USB games... and well unless I'm doing something wrong (cause I had them working before) or they need to be added differently... They aren't working either (I'm still trying things out)
In the end... The biggest advancement with this version of OPL is that you can drag and drop ISO's to an exFAT formatted HDD/SSD... other than that I feel OPL has went backwards not forward..
What about the new UDPBD server? What are your thoughts on it?
I will also say don't confuse the daily build of OPL with the official build from GitHub. The original OPL devs do not support popstarter or ps1 games in OPL. Thank you for your incredible writeup, very much appreciated.

I love that we can now have more than just a 2TB HDD/SSD but I hope that some time in the near future the options and bugs I have mentioned before are addressed. @@iDok These days I just play around with the 1.1.0 and sometimes the beta versions of OPL from the github. I am in the psx-scene.com discord so I'll pass your comments along. Likely they have heard these comments before and it will be a matter of time before they do something. For sure integrated popstarter ps1 support won't happen as it requires some copyrighted files, and the daily build fork was done by another dev that is shunned by the original PS2 dev community, so there is some drama in the OPL development scene so to speak.
You can point to a folder with OPL manager which can be your external drive
So are you still using GrimDoomer's exfat method? Seems like a few people are sticking with the old method. Personally, I love the ease of transferring my ISOs off my PC.
Could you please explain how? I have to convert from ISO via USB Util every time.

Great video thanks, got it all working but I will say if you are using a 6TB hard drive the cover art loads painfully slowly
This OPL speeds it up and if you formatted the +OPL partition at the start of the drive then it will access the ART folder faster and load in quick

It doesn't IIRC. but you can use multiple devices so a usb stick for ps1 is good enough
Loading ART for PS1 games from USB is slow as heck, much better to install to HDD in my opinion

I've tried formatting it in both MBR and GPT, no dice with a Seagate Barracuda. The network adapter works as I was able to format the old way in ulaunchelf just fine.

How do we add artwork and opl background music for our games with the grimdoomer opl?
He showed you, use OPL Manager pointed to the exfat drive in NORMAL mode (not PS2 HDD direct connect mode), batch actions, ART download, or simply copy ART folder from your temp folder like he showed in the video

i tested using an SSD and the art loaded much faster but it was only a 250 gig SSD so didn't have as many games and my 2tb HDD
I like the concept however i have some concerns about CD games that are less than 700 mb. Would it read the cd games from the CD folder or do i have to convert them to isos ? I am using PFS batch kit to transfer games into the internal HDD and it does transfer CD games into CD folder. I do not convert cd games to iso to avoid issues
You need to convert the CD games, unfortunately.

I keep getting Error game is fragmented on alot of my games on my internal 4TB SSD drive. I replaced some of the games and now work but there is still a bunch that give me that error and defrag the drive as well with same issues.
Go the settings you see something called check usb game fragmented turn it off

Not loading my games and my memory card screwed up now. I don't know why it won't show the games I followed instructions to the letter. I don't understand how to get my freemcboot settings back to the main screen now I loaded the cf file and now I lost all my settings. How do I get my settings back on the main screen? Hi there, I have an SMB server on my network that feeds the ISOs to the PS2 with OPL. Is it also possible to navigate to media such as MP3s or video files so that you could use the the play station to stream the media directly?

Could be adapter introducing an issue. Try HDL Batch Installer as alternative

I've had quite bad luck with SATA USB adapters and can't connect to my PC even though the PS2 reads the HDD just fine.
Try using HBL batch installer see if that helps any. If not, ask for help from the devs on psx-scene.com forums

Don't quote me on this, but if virtual mc's are not supported in that opl build then may need to use real mc card.
Hello , any advice for wireles controler for ps2 ? Milions of them on ebay and aliexpers but those arent good . And i cant find pressure sensitive info on any of them
I think the best is go find a ps2 bluetooth adapter and then use your favorite bluetooth controller. These don't do pressure sensitive though, only the original ps2 dualshock controller from what I understand.

To your knowledge if you have a PS2 physical game. Can you put it inside the PS2 and rip/burn/or whatever the term is the disc into the hard drive? If so how would that be done?
You can rip and burn PS2 ISOs, just not with the PS2 itself. That requires a PC and an optical drive
@@bronzin1445Yes you can, it's called HDL Game Installer, it's a app you have to download and either run it from a your ps2 memory card or from a usb.

Bro what hdmi adapter and tv you are using and the side black borders are always there i mean tv default display or its when using ps2 ?
Two things:
1) A lot of PS2 games were made for CRT TVs, meaning that they display in a 4:3 aspect ratio. Modern TVs are wide screen (16:9), and while a few PS2 games support wide screen, most don't. This means that, in essence, your wide TV is showing you a much narrower image. The black bars are there not because of some kind of visual glitch, but because there is literally nothing there. If you don't like it, your options are either to force the picture to wide screen (not recommended since it'll just stretch it) or play the game on an emulator, as the community has created many patches that force wide screen in games that didn't originally support it.
2) It is generally not recommended to use HDMI on PS2, since the console doesn't natively support it. While there are some HDMI dongles you can use, those compress the video quality significantly, and are generally not worth it unless you LITERALLY have no other choice. For PS2, the best video quality will come from a component cable (the one with 6 plugs as opposed to composite which only has 3). Depending on when your TV was made, it's possible that it doesn't support composite at all, but many will still support it with the use of dongles. My Samsung TV for instance came with adapters that look like headphone jacks which plug into the side of the TV and allow connection via composite.
Avoid HDMI adapters like the plague. Not only are they cheap garbage but more often than not, they make the image worse by introducing a lot of visual noise.
If you going with HDMI as the default format, use a SCALER like the RetroTink 5x or OSSC.
How can i play ps1 games
I Copy OPL to the boot folder on the memory card, then rename it to boot and alway will boot on OPL
don't do that. You may need ulaunchelf in an emergency just set the AUTO option in freemcboot configuration to OPL.

Could you do a video about using cheat device on HDD with PS2 using hdboot? I've managed to get the app on the device but anytime I open it there's never any games. And I have the cheat database copied over as well.
I'll put it on my todo list, after I figure out how it works myself lol.
@@ProjectPhoenixMedia yeah I'm currently using codebreaker 10 myself because somebody already had the files to patch it to work with HDD but it's kind of buggy, the reason I found your video describing to use cheat device in the first place. I can only launch codebreaker 10 once if I try and do it again it freezes on the black screen. So my guess would be the cheat device would need to be patched as well but I don't know what exactly that would take.

I get a ton of lag during cutscenes, is this caused by the fact that I'm playing games off usb thumb drive? I know it's not on topic but I'm just curious, can I eliminate the lag using an HDD?
yes, the ps2 usb port version is1.0, so the data transfer rate is slow, the cutscene required higher data transfer rate which not supported by usb 1.0

@@DokesConspiracyNetwork all good, in some games loadings are almost non existent. The only problem I encountered has been a little freeze with ace combat 5 but with opl there are many compatibility options.

Make sure enough space when installing OPL the first time, maybe delete any existing OPL folder on the memory card to get a clean slate.

Last I checked you cannot. Best to pick one of the popstarter methods or use ps1 with tonyhax or freepsxboot, etc.

@@paulskyekahawaty6133 I'm only aware of the VCD method for popstarter. ISO seems like less hassle, but lot of ps1 games I see are already in bin/cue format so its not too much extra go to VCD I guess.

@ProjectPhoenixMedia yes I took your advice n pit a DVD iso in DVD folder n it works on my 5tb seagate n 20tb barracuda but not on my 8tb seagate.
Also doesn't read cd folder on any hdd. I run the cd folder from USB on my 2tb thumb drive fat32.

Do you happen to remember which version of the elf file you used when you copied it to the memory card ? , in my case, opl launches fine but the games wont really boot and i end up with a black screen when selecting a game to boot from the menu, this seems to only happen when grimdoomers opl is running from my memory card
I put 40 games on my HDD and seperated into two folders CD and DVD based on size. Only 1 game worked im at a loss what im doing wrong. Ive spent so much time researching and troubleshooting...
Can ask at the psx-scene forum...but its odd only one game works and not the rest, compatibility should be good enough. Or just go back to regular internal hard drive with opl and skip this version of grimdoomer

@ProjectPhoenixMedia Yeah, I just asked for help there and reddit. Unfortunately, I have a 4 TB that will only work on grimsdoomer. It is very odd that only one game works. I'll see if I hear anything back from the forum.
Apparently, the grimdoomer fork is dead. Is there no other way to use an internal disk larger than 2TB?

I've connected mine many many times with it in the power off state and several times with it completely powered on and haven't blow a fuse on yet.

This version of OPL is ass. It would load 50% of the time if I was lucky. If it did launch, it would detect my games 25% of the time.
Concept is good, but the compatibility maybe not so much like you saw first hand
Good to know! There's also the problem for those who already have their HDD with all their backups would have to either extract the ISOs one by one with Winhip or format their HDD entirely just to use this version of OPL. It's not worth it honestly.
So far it has loaded 100% of the time and always detects all the games, not sure how you have yours setup but mine works fine, I'm using v1.2.0.5-1991 Beta

You can use HDLBatchInstaller to extract multiple games at once.
Nobody should be using WinHiip in [current year], it is outdated and buggy as hell.

i just got fmcb v1.966 today,tested it and all games plays in slowmo like youtube playback speed of 0.5x any advice on how to fix it.,i have the ps2 SCPH-30001.
Edit:found out it's my PS2 phat version SCPH-30001 having this problem while on my PS2 slim it play on normal speed hope someone can help me fix slowmo speed on my phat PS2,I use 32gb Kingston usb flash drive.

It's been awhile since I last tried this. I don't think it needs to be split but give it a try and let me know if it turns out it does.
@@ProjectPhoenixMedia You are correct, I had the wrong version of OPL. I encourage others to make sure they have GrimDoomers version. I formated the Hard Drive in exFat and put all of the folders on it like a giant flash drive and I was able to dump all of my .iso (unsplit) right in the DVD folder including all files bigger than 4gb. The only downfall is you can no longer use HD Loader app as it wants to reformat the hard drive, unless you have a workable soulution to that. Other than that, if there was a way to transfer files over the network so I don't have to disassemble the network adapter then it would be flawless. Thank you again for this video it was a HUGE help.

Issue with this is he stopped development and games have issues locking up onimusha 2 for example

It has some compatibility issues
I just found the hdd_dll folder on OPL manager and found the ART folder that I needed. My hdd is formatted for PS2 so I cant do the drag drop. Currently letting uLE copy over all the images to the hdd from a USB drive. I have a question though, once a hdd is formatted to PS2 and had the games loaded on it is there any program that can correct the titles? OPL manager has the rename and delte functions greyed out when using a formatted PS2 hdd
Go to OPL settings and find "enable write operations" this should then enable you to rename and delete from within OPL

Various ssd’s still have issues like the crucial BX500 1tb SSD.

Sadly, I am having issues with my 3TB hard disk. Grimdoomer sees it but it doesn't see the games in it. I formated it in exFAT/512b, I even made it smaller (1.5TB) but still nothing. Do you know what it can be? The procedure is so easy that I think the only issue possible is the HDD. As HDD I am using a external hard drive I had, so I am plugging it to the PC with its original case.
opl manager does work with exfat hard drives I tested it just a few minutes ago and it works fine
