From what I've understood, L-engines don't take turbos very well, a common issue with swirl chamber diesels in general, because of the asymmetric combustion caused by the offset of the swirl chamber means that heat is unevenly distributed, so unless a swirl chamber diesel is specifically designed for a high pressure turbo you really have to limit your turbocharging. A good example is the 2L-T and the 2L-II, despite being the same displacement, the 2L-T only gains a few horsepower over its naturally aspired half-sibling, which got its power gain through a more efficient valve train, with the result of a weaker head more prone to cracking when aftermarket turbocharged. Of course, the 2L-T has somewhat more torque than the 2L-II. I've heard some legends that the 2L-THE, a mythological L-engine with ceramic swirl chambers which rivaled Direct Injection engines in efficiency, but aside from the wikipedia page, this engine is a unicorn.
I have the same. No issue I’m afraid that’s just what that engine can produce. For a naturally aspirated Diesel engine it’s pretty powerful. Unless you try upgrading it which can either be a good or bad thing you can get a little more power but not much. Probably better doing An engine swap for a newer hilux engine or getting and new car altogether tbh
Thank you for this excellent capture of the process. How similar is this rebuild to the 3L version? I'm hoisting mine out of the Van tomorrow... Please send me your good luck vibes.
Engine is out with the expected van complications... Rebuild starts next week. Given they're the exact same manual I'll answer my own question and check back to make sure I don't miss anything. Thank you.
@@Rooxie973 a lot of luck. The machine shop that was working the block back into tolerance had to throw in the pistons and crankshaft to check the protrusion so the trickiest part was done for me. The rest went together like a jigsaw puzzle with the only trick being that the workshop manual referenced steps in other procedure that weren't quite sequential for my specific model.
Nice and very pro rebuilt. I have same engine (200.000 km) but cranckshaft is broken, when i check the cranckshaft benches this have 1 cap screw slightly loose, i think is not uncommon in this engine, now i sweep to 3L engine because is more realiable.

Loading capacity and fuel economy which engine is best 3L /5L. please reply as soon as possible. I will greatful to you.
noam the main difference is one is a factory turbo, and one is not. Otherwise there are a few variations. If your asking if a 2lt turbo setup will fit your 5L engine. Then yes, yes it will. Will it last? I doubt it.
I would love to see some video on you guys installing turbo kits!

What a build!
How much will it cost if you do the same in kenya
is it with the mechanical fuel injection?
Awesome video thankyou
I have a 5l engine but it seems not to hold much power it only run to top speed 110km/h and then dies down to 80km/h. What might be the issue?

3L is quite good with fuel economy I got around 9 Liters / 100km
Or around 26mpg
Best 5L more power then 3L and fuel not so bad
