Remember when you were 24 and just starting your life's trek? But, at 64 there's still so much more! #buzzretirementgarage #retirement #earlyretirement
Just retired yesterday after 44+ years with the same company. Turning 64 in 2 weeks. Went metal detecting at sun up this morning. Playing disc golf with my son in the morning. Yep, time to have fun for sure. Thanks for all your advice and if you ever wanna try disc golf, I’m not far from you in Avon Lake.
I am 66 and my husband turned 67 today ! We leave tomorrow on a road trip to Maine . Whale watching is on my bucket list so is cruise to Alaska that we have booked for next May ! There is so much to see in this country ! We both work a few hours each week to fund our adventures 🤗
Not retired yet, but we are doing Maine in October. Did Alaska cruise on Celebrity Millineum in 2019, and it was great. I also highly recommend transiting the Panama Canal. We did that from San Diego to Puerto Rico which was also awesome. Planning to retire in December. We are then going to do a transatlantic from Fort Lauderdale to Rome, Italy then two weeks on land before flying home.
My daughter and son-in-law just got back from Acadia National park. One of the days they took a boat ride a short distance out to see puffins on an island. While out there they saw a minke whale. The guide was excited about it because whales normally didn't come in that close. Have a nice trip.
Heck Buzz, Im 84 and theres more ...here in 2024. I sell postcards on Ebay after putting them on my postcard traveler blog, I travel the roads of my birthplace Baltimore on UA-cam and I travel the trains across the USA all this and more after 30 years of teaching. Dont stop even if your body does...go you tube~!
Howdy. Excellent. I gotta say Buzz if at all possible make your way to the Grand Canyon. Swing on through Navajo Nation, the dry desert and maybe hit Chaco Canyon or Canyon De Chelly as well and explore some trails and petroglyphs. But Grand Canyon in all its glory is Spectacular in person that I promise. I hope you both make there one day soon. But as always, good video on getting out there now and then thanks. Have an awesome weekend!
In the last month, I have been camping, went to a festival, visited a city that I haven't been to, and attended a concert by one of my favorite singers. Life is good at 64.
Aw heck Buzz, I'm 72, so that makes me closer to 74 than 64, and even I feel there's "so much more" ! I'd say to all that can, get out and enjoy your hobbies. I have two state parks within about 40 minutes of me, both have several miles of walking/easy hiking trails. I like to go there with my dog on cool days, especially wintertime for a good walk in the woods. "Cheap entertainment". Also since weekdays are open to me, I can go to the range or the archery range and have fun while it's not crowded. Usually several old farts like me there too, so a guy can have fun conversation with like-minded fellas.
You are having too much fun Buzz. Your smile takes up your whole face!! I got a text today from a former coworker. He recently retired. His text was those two words it’s hard to believe come from a new retiree…”I’m bored”. I should have replied to just go back to work. Instead, I offered up suggestions. I will forward him your video about that list you came up with for things to do! Keep smiling! 😊
We are 62 and 66, and we are constantly looking at what's next....? We now wonder how we ever had time to work? We stay busy with our homesteading, ensuring that we will be able to age in place gracefully. That being said, we are not sitting on our laurels. We spend spring and summer tweaking things here, so we can leave in the fall for a few months. I love to can, cook, and bake. In doing that, and in cutting and splitting our own firewood, we have heat for the house, in exchange for a couple of weeks of good workouts 😊. We have done 6 weeks in Italy, and 7 weeks in 5 countries of Europe, we love cruises, and they make great transportation to and from Spain or Portugal. Once we retired in 2016, we started traveling, and we are happy to come back home afterwards, but we then begin the plans for the next adventure. My mother passed 2 years ago at 93, and loved to travel. We live on a low budget, just as she did, we are just mindful of where we spend our money and what we get in return for it. These adventures will last in our memories forever. I won't miss a tv show for a second. 😊
Retirement, what a time to be alive. The thing about the Grand Canyon, and also Monument Valley, that a drone can never capture is the scale. Being there doesn’t feel real. I had to keep reminding myself that I wasn’t on a movie set. I have tried many things in retirement that I never expected to do. I can’t wait to see what’s next.
But the so much more should include travel!! It doesn't have to be expensive or cost a fortune either. But like you said, seeing it on television is not the same, especially the Grand Canyon. We arrived at night, and walked out to see if for the first time the next morning. I literally cried it was so amazing. And Hawaii - go there too. Kauai is our "Happy Place". It's truly Heaven on Earth. 🙂
I have seen the Redwoods forest, Yosemite, Yellowstone ,Grand Tetons, Monument Valley , Niagara Falls, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and other natural wonders but the South Rim of the Grand Canyon was the best hands down. We used to rent a car and drive all day from place to place never making reservations and we never had a problem getting a room until we pulled up to the Log lodge at the Grand Canyon as the sun was setting. They were booked up but fortunately a maintenance guy was walking by and offered us a cabin on the rim that he was reserving in case there was an issue with one of the other cabins. We woke up with a deer standing outside our window and it was about a 50 foot walk to the edge, I looked over the railing and got a slight bit of vertigo and I could see the seven mile trail at the bottom and the Donkeys looked like ants. It was truly spectacular and I was just awestruck. True that pictures and video are not even close to being the same.
Hello Buzz, I just came from a coworkers viewing tonight. He was 54. Saw him last Monday said hello he could hardly speak because of throat cancer. Tomorrow is the funeral. Wow he was a great guy. Very sad.
I’m 64 as well. I’ve got a long time left as I have a new daughter to raise and fully intend to show her the world! I’ll say this. Having a much younger wife has kept me young over the last 15 years and my new daughter will also allow me to see the world again through her eyes and keep my young mindset. Fortunately I’m in very good health, no medications, no aches, pains or chronic issues. The best is still ahead I believe!
I'm 59 and enjoying a few weeks of annual leave. Sailed my boat across Chesapeake Bay this afternoon and loved it! Can't wait till next year when there's time to go farther afield in retirement. Buzz, go see the Grand Canyon if you can. It costs nothing to look at and you will be amazed!
I can’t agree more with this video. I’m just shy of 3 years being retired and we’ve been really enjoying ourselves. Yes we’ve traveled to US and internationally but also enjoying some simple pleasures, going for a ride to enjoy the scenery and grabbing a bite. Completing projects around the house, spending time with the grandkids. We feel blessed that we’re healthy enough to enjoy these things. Enjoy life!
We made a restaurant jar of all the restaurants in our county. there are 440 and so now when we go out we get one from the jar. Fun way to explore the area. And go broke. haha. we also made a movie jar we included all types of movies I had been making a list include also favorite movies we had seen before. And we draw a movie from that jar!!
Buzz another great topic. I will change it slightly---74 and there’s so much more. I am excited every morning. I just try to enjoy life every day. Get those feet moving Buzz.
Okay that’s what I find more encouraging - someone who’s retired and looking and feeling upbeat about just being alive and being presented with another day to embark on doing something different whatever it may be but with enthusiasm. Thank you! I’ve come across other videos of retirees but they bring me down listening to them and I’m not retired but it’s depressing to hear them say about how many weeks you have to have a meaningful life and that’s not the attitude I want to go into retirement with someday. You on the other hand, radiate good vibes even when talking about making end of life decisions. A positive attitude and good energy is what we need most these days and you’re not letting people like me down. For that, I thank you!
Thank you for your kind words! I don't take a second of this recent freedom for granted. I can't ever see it wearing off. If there's any subject you want me to tackle let me know! Buzz
Yes I didn’t retire till I was 67 and now I’m 73 don’t tell everybody my son will be 47 this year well in fact this month wish I could go back and do it all over but we don’t get that privilege my granddaughter that’s coming to see me tomorrow she’s 32 this month everybody’s growing up. I think I’m the oldest one in the family. I try to keep going you’re just young you got your 64. I thought I’d get this old. I thought I would pass away before I got this old. I remember thinking my stepdad was old when he was in his 50s, too funny❤
Love this video and topic. I’m retired, and waiting for my husband to get on the bus so to speak. He is 4 yrs younger than me, but I want to do many things together, and we aren’t going to be able to do those things in a decade. I love that quote, holy shit, what a ride!
Maybe you can get him to retire early? I just read up on Hunter Thompson ( here's something weird: Thompson wins the 1st gift card, Thompson wins the 2nd gift card and then I quote a Thompson. All within a few weeks).
You are right! I’m gonna go to Ensenada Mexico tomorrow and check out 3 different neighborhoods with rental houses I found online. I’ll try to get appointments to see any that I still like after that. I found one today in the exact location I think I want, close to everything but not in city center. Decades ago I stayed in a condo near Papas & Beer, zero sleep.
yeah... i remember that song..."old man" ... and i went and saw a hunter s. thompson "talk" (ramble)... a lot of stuff has changed since those times.... anyway, yeah, these "golden years" are meant to be enjoyed ... so that's what i do everyday... just enjoy and be thankful for being blessed with the things that i'm able to experience...
@@BuzzRetirementGarage today, i strolled through my woods, went swimming in my pool, worked on my troy bilt 42 inch riders (love those mowers) and had a couple of cocktails while having a bonfire...
Another great conversation thanks! Buzz did you make the birdhouse in the video? We went to my husband 50 class reunion. He went to an all boys prep school in Connecticut Mass. 50 men came and they all looked healthy and in shape! Very blessed.
I just did a road trip through both broods of emerging periodic cicadas for the heck of it... road trip to the closest brood of cicadas for you is in the Westville area of Indiana for the buzzing insects (then farther west into the Chicago area). . Gas was $2.94 in Michigan city at the US421 turn off.(then a 5 cent discount if you are a speedway loyalty member). The NW Purdue university campus (just south of Michigan City) has the most easterly bunch of cicadas I could find and some really weird UFO like hum going on under the cicada noise. From cleveland Amish Indiana is on the way more or less and there's .25 cent senior coffee at Mc donalds N of US 6 and S of US20 in the Lagrange , shipshe, Goshen area.. And there's 99cent Iced large Iced coffee via the Mc donalds app across the nation if you'd prefer a cooler drink in the sweaty weather . Just "get up n go" while the "get up and going" is still something you're able to do. 17 years is a long time away for the next periodic cicada emergence . Heck maybe go to metro chicago and try the polish buffet down there or try Jollie Bee Chicken in metro chicagoland....and snag a Ben's soft Pretzel someplace around Goshen. Maybe drive south toward Champaign and find the other brood (the county park north of town has a bunch)... wind your way south towards Jasper Indiana and dine at Schitzelbank or there's an Amish buffet north of there near Loogootree Indiana. Plenty of new places to explore on a tank or two of gas ride way.
I am 65. My mom died at 52, just shy of her 53rd. My (younger) sister died at 57. I have already beat the odds in my family and since I am in good health, hoping I can smash the record further and one day disintegrate into that grave, eventually, as dust!
I just wrote a comment but it did not send so I will try again. We made a jar of all the restaurants in our county there are 440. So when we go out now we take one from the jar. We write the date on it and a quick comment. so that is a fun way of exploring our area. and going broke 😂 we also made a movie jar I included movies we have always wanted to see, Disney movies, drama, comedy, a little bit of everything, and also some of our favorites to rewatch. We have about 500 movies in this big jar. When we hear of a new one we add it. And we also write the date and a quick rating of the movie on back of the papers.
I’m 67 and feel great Ive a ton of bucket list things to get to Main thing is keeping the weight off Nothing heavy lives long … It puts you in the grave much sooner
I check my weight daily and when I was working, I didn't eat breakfast. I'd wait until lunchtime. Now, in retirement, I eat breakfast, but normally don't eat a lunch. Maybe a banana or apple but that's it. I also try to drink a lot of water.
I’m thankful I traveled more in younger days because since 2009 we’ve been tied to home caring for the mother-in-law. She’s in a care home now but that hasn’t freed us to travel. She’ll be 104 this August. When she was 79 (I think) we took her on a trip to London. The first and only time she traveled outside the US. Last vacation the husband and I took was to Italy in 2007. He gave me a “leave of absence” in 2012 when I spent a month in Italy. Besides that solo trip I once traveled to Switzerland solo in 1986. Now I think I don’t have to energy to travel abroad.
Wow. 104? My father in law passed last December at 96 but 104? That's amazing! When she was born in 1920, the first commercial radio channel started. How far we've come. Lucky you got to travel abroad. I'll have to break it to my wife that if she doesn't want to fly out to the canyon I'll just go myself. How much trouble could little ole me get into?
Hmmm. That would be an interesting topic. Although I'm not an expert, I am still weighing my options because there's pluses and minus's to every option. Buzz
At 62, there's still work to do. There was so much more at 24, and before the war. I was able to travel and see the world, including places I hadn't planned on, like Iraq.
@@BuzzRetirementGarage I'm a nobody, and besides, the younger generation does not seem very interested in the America we grew up in. The military can't meet their quotas, even with lowering standards. You never even hear of Flag Day anymore, because it is of no importance. Of course with this month being June, there are flags of many colors that get more attention and respect now.
@@jeffb.2469 I can tell you my 30 year old neighbor, my 45 year old neighbor. My 59 year old neighbor and my 42 year old neighbor all proudly fly out American flags.
I love your positivity, Buzz. I had an acquaintance who thought retirement meant sitting and watching Wheel of Fortune. I’m proud to say I haven’t watched one segment of it since I retired. 😂 Have you taken the tour of the Christmas Story house yet? If you do, I hope you can film it.
I haven't taken the tour and I'm not sure I want to. I just think the movie creates a "feeling" that can't be duplicated by walking through an empty house. I think I would be disappointed. Maybe I'll change my mind someday.
We saw South Fork of Dallas fame when the show was still popular and it was disappointing , is was smaller than we thought. But Grace Land was pretty cool.
I read that old people’s big regret is if they wasted their 60s. We’ve got some good years left to do big things if we want to. Luckily I don’t want to 😂
I retired 12 years ago and my wife and I have traveled extensively, I would encourage you to make some national park trips if possible, it’s much different in person than seeing on YT, the north rim of the GC is amazing. Make a bucket list and check the boxes while you are physically able to. Good luck.
Are you still metal detecting? How is that going? I am thinking about getting one, but would like to hear if you enjoy using yours. That could be an idea for a video someday.....
Retirement is ok, i wish my wife wanted to explore ,but i wil have to go solo if I go places, it is sad to me but thats the wAY It goes . take care Buzz.
Just got back from Europe and it's overhyped. I agree with traveling in America instead of overseas. Also agree with trying out new things here locally. Fact is that me being only semi-retired, it's easy for me to get caught in a rut. I'm likely retiring in the next 12 months and I have a few hobbies. However, it's so important in my opinion to go outside the box and try new things. It's keeps you young.
@@derrick8224 - I think people like cruises because they are often cheaper than plane fair, car, rental, hotel and taxi charges. However, I think in the end, cruises are a mediocre value at best. You're spending way more time on the ship than you are actually visiting destination. In my opinion, you're basically in a confined poor man's Las Vegas. I'm sure many might disagree, but that's how I see it.
I consider it a joy! Sometimes it takes a while to get through comments but it's actually therapeutic to read and share our retired lives. Nope. Not a job.
24 years ago, when my wife left me, my new wife was born. She's 24 and I'm 65 now. I think God's plan is always best. Never did I imagine starting over. But I've discovered that not having to work while raising a family is best. Enjoy the ride😊 2 Peter 3:8-9 reads: ‘But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.’

Maybe you can get him to retire early? I just read up on Hunter Thompson ( here's something weird: Thompson wins the 1st gift card, Thompson wins the 2nd gift card and then I quote a Thompson. All within a few weeks).
We’re blessed to be living a wonderful life in our Golden Years
Many of us feel that way!
Thanks!
Amazing how generous you are! Thank you so much!
I highly recommend the North Rim of the Grand Canyon - And, now that we are retired, we can go during the "off" season and miss a lot of the crowds!
That's where I'll go then. Thank you! Buzz
Good luck and I hope you find something! Buzz
Thank you for your upbeat videos. I enjoy listening.
Thank you for watching!
"The Summer of Buzz!"
And it feels so good! Buzz
You’re living a good life!!
Feels like it!
Thanks Buzz, I need that "Pep Talk" now and again. It's so easy to lose focus.
Anytime! Just let me know when you need a push!
yeah... i remember that song..."old man" ... and i went and saw a hunter s. thompson "talk" (ramble)... a lot of stuff has changed since those times.... anyway, yeah, these "golden years" are meant to be enjoyed ... so that's what i do everyday... just enjoy and be thankful for being blessed with the things that i'm able to experience...
Glad you're enjoying every day! Buzz
@@BuzzRetirementGarage today, i strolled through my woods, went swimming in my pool, worked on my troy bilt 42 inch riders (love those mowers) and had a couple of cocktails while having a bonfire...
@@superman9772 That's a good day!
Good video. I retired a year ago and this has got me thinking.....
Good thoughts I hope! Buzz
Another great conversation thanks! Buzz did you make the birdhouse in the video? We went to my husband 50 class reunion. He went to an all boys prep school in Connecticut Mass. 50 men came and they all looked healthy and in shape! Very blessed.
No, the birdhouse was made by a old coworker of mine. I'm not sure what to do with it. Glad you went to the reunion! Buzz
I would have never thought of chasing cicadas! That's original. Good itinerary too. Thank you for sharing that! Buzz
Mr and Mrs Buzz need to take a road trip to New Brunswick this fall to get a lobster roll :)
There's an excellent idea! 1,161 miles. Road trip! Lol
At 24 we were so busy being busy. 😊 Now in our late 40s we are looking towards enjoying life more!
I'm sure you're still busy!
I am 65. My mom died at 52, just shy of her 53rd. My (younger) sister died at 57. I have already beat the odds in my family and since I am in good health, hoping I can smash the record further and one day disintegrate into that grave, eventually, as dust!
Hopefully you get to have many new adventures before then!
Great advice my friend
Thanks!
Another It's All the Buzz! I'm listening
You're still funny!
I will take a seat on the short bus!! Sorry will take that!!
I love it!! You look so happy! That is great. Live each day the best way you can.
So far, so good!
I just wrote a comment but it did not send so I will try again.
We made a jar of all the restaurants in our county there are 440. So when we go out now we take one from the jar.
We write the date on it and a quick comment.
so that is a fun way of exploring our area.
and going broke 😂
we also made a movie jar I included movies we have always wanted to see, Disney movies, drama, comedy, a little bit of everything, and also some of our favorites to rewatch.
We have about 500 movies in this big jar. When we hear of a new one we add it. And we also write the date and a quick rating of the movie on back of the papers.
That sounds interesting! A fun way to check places out! Thank you. Buzz
Buzz I hope you get to do all the things on your list. I am excited to start working on mine 😊
I hope so too.
Just love you videos as they give us encouragement and a light at theme of a career. Keep it up. We are with you.
Thank you for your kind thoughts! Buzz
I love your plan!!! We are doing the same traveling you both are doing!!
It should work well!
I’m 67 and feel great
Ive a ton of bucket list things to get to
Main thing is keeping the weight off
Nothing heavy lives long …
It puts you in the grave much sooner
I check my weight daily and when I was working, I didn't eat breakfast. I'd wait until lunchtime. Now, in retirement, I eat breakfast, but normally don't eat a lunch. Maybe a banana or apple but that's it. I also try to drink a lot of water.
Buzz, as always, a good chat. Keep it up and take care till next time!
Thank you sir!
Buzz your 64, I'm wondering if you could talk about health care and what plan you're going to choose for 65 Medicare. We are so interested.❤
Bet you could write a book about your experience.
Thank you for your service!
Have you taken the tour of the Christmas Story house yet? If you do, I hope you can film it.
I haven't taken the tour and I'm not sure I want to. I just think the movie creates a "feeling" that can't be duplicated by walking through an empty house. I think I would be disappointed. Maybe I'll change my mind someday.
@@BuzzRetirementGarage You make a good point. I’d hate to have the movie ruined.
We saw South Fork of Dallas fame when the show was still popular and it was disappointing , is was smaller than we thought. But Grace Land was pretty cool.
Thanks Buzz 🐝
Thanks for watching!
summer of Buzz... hahaha!
Why not? It's my turn. Lol
That why I bought the ryker at 61 and more adventure ...Been to grand Canyon it nicer than on Tv , the silence there is amazing ... worth doing.
That's a nice 3 wheeler! I'll get there soon.
I read that old people’s big regret is if they wasted their 60s. We’ve got some good years left to do big things if we want to. Luckily I don’t want to 😂
You have to get to the USA someday!
I retired 12 years ago and my wife and I have traveled extensively, I would encourage you to make some national park trips if possible, it’s much different in person than seeing on YT, the north rim of the GC is amazing. Make a bucket list and check the boxes while you are physically able to. Good luck.
Agree. I loved Yellowstone and Bryce. Somehow I said "wow" more times at those two parks than the Grand Canyon.
Thank you for your input! I'll get there someday. Buzz
Are you still metal detecting? How is that going? I am thinking about getting one, but would like to hear if you enjoy using yours. That could be an idea for a video someday.....
I haven't gone this spring yet. Everyday has been garden and yardwork. I'm slowly getting there. I'll get out there soon. Buzz
Retirement is ok, i wish my wife wanted to explore ,but i wil have to go solo if I go places, it is sad to me but thats the wAY It goes . take care Buzz.
I have the same problem. Maybe we should get a group of retiree's and pick somewhere to go every year! Buzz
I turned 64 on July 4th!!
Happy birthday 🎂
Infinite possibilities, we are living at a time when the average person has access to things only dreamed of by Kings and Pharaohs of long ago.
Well, that was back when alien life visited so they had more than we knew. Lolol
@@BuzzRetirementGarage Chariots of the Gods, I have not thought about that book for a long time.😀
@@williamrosas9787 Now it would be a drone.😀
Just got back from Europe and it's overhyped. I agree with traveling in America instead of overseas. Also agree with trying out new things here locally. Fact is that me being only semi-retired, it's easy for me to get caught in a rut. I'm likely retiring in the next 12 months and I have a few hobbies. However, it's so important in my opinion to go outside the box and try new things. It's keeps you young.
Very true. And I would add cruises to overrated
@@JohnBowl14690 I like the analogy.
Good points! Thanks for sharing! Buzz
Hi Buzz
Hello back!
You should go to Italy. :-)
If I had your money. Lol
👍😊
Doesn't mean that much to me to mean that much to you ......
Hunter S Thompson took his own life. 😢
I didn't know anything about him until I just read his Wiki. Very interesting.
Do you consider UA-cam a job or not? Just curious.
Enjoy the ride😊
2 Peter 3:8-9 reads:
‘But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.’
You definitely have an interesting situation! Best of luck! Buzz
Go travel. New perspective on your life.
Takes two to tango.
