  • Like the title says, I thought I'd ever get a chance to check out this 1964 Mercury Montclair. The reason being is that the junkyard had it behind their fence for about two years before they decided to bring it out for parts. I'm not sure the reason why as it was never posted for sale. Luckily I just happen to be driving by and decided to stop and go in. This is like many places that charges to go in and they rarely get any classics so I don't normally stop here. This 25th Anniversary More Door Merc was still in pretty good shape. I believe all the four doors came with the very cool Breezeway back window. This one had the H code FE big block 390 with power steering, power brakes and Air conditioning. One very cool thing about the dash on these is that the AC vents are sort of hidden as they blend in with the rest of the dash trim when they are closed. The entire front end including the grill was very nice. Overall a lot of nice parts on this one to be saved before it meets the crusher. The only really bad was the trunk as it was rusted along with the channel. But the deck lid was nice.

    Whoa Nelley, it's a Montclair and it may be squished and to the FOMOCO faithful that's not fair..
    Sam Laney Lincoln-Mercury was located at 700 North Locust Street in Denton, TX and today this is Denton Tool and Fastener Company, and you can easily make out that this is the same building. Sam Laney was also a Firestone dealer for a time, which makes sense considering that Ford vehicles often had Firestone tires on them due to intermarriage between the two families.
    We got the VIN, we win: 4 for 1964 model year, Z for St. Louis (Hazelwood), MO assembly, 52 for Montclair four door sedan, H for 390 V8 special with two barrel and the rest is the production sequence. The Hazelwood plant operated from 1948 to 2006. By 2009 it was demolished. It was closed as part of "The Way Forward" program.
    We got the tag, we can brag: 54B for Montclair four door sedan, Y for Glacier Blue exterior paint, 72 for Blue interior trim, 19J for Thursday, September 19, 1963 production, 22 for Dallas, TX sales district, 1 for 2.89:1 rear end ratio, non-locking, and 4 for dual range automatic transmission. Yes, that's 25th Anniversary. X in Roman numerals is ten so two "X"s is 20 and a V is 5, so together that's 10+10+5=25. Yes, between 250 and 266 HP depending on the version of the 390 V8 with the two barrel in 1964. The Mustang VIN is stamped on the inner fenders among other places. The driver's door is gone, which would have all the pertinent data.
    Whoa Nelley, 1964 and could soon be out the door. Montclair needs a lot of care. That's it, time to quit. Glacier Blue, and it's over for you. Made in Hazelwood and it ain't no good. 3-9-0 and gotta go. Going to be flat and that's that. Autolite soon to be out of sight. Motorcraft needs a life raft. Sold new by Sam and ready for the trash can. Plant VIN code "Z" and it's over for thee. Going to get squished and only the FOMOCO faithful, many here, but sorry folks, not the Google Man are going to be pissed.

    How could that grille possibly have survived all these years without getting even one ding?! That is truly amazing. I remember one of our neighbors had one of these when I was a kid. She used to put the back window down when we were riding in the back seat and it was the coolest thing!

    This Is the Truth...🤔 Many Cars in good conditions and bring to the junkyard by the owners because at the sale ads respond beggars Who offer ridicoulous sums. So instead of trying to sell It, are thrown away. Few days ago, for this reason, an old tachear has scrap her Citroen 2cv charleston two tone bordeaux/black in perfect condition.. thanks for your video. Hi from Rimini Italy.

    I wonder where the AC controls are? The heater control appears to be just for heat. Maybe there is a dual mode fan switch that turns on the AC fan if it is rotated in a one direction? There would normally be a separate AC cool knob too. I thought first that the AC controls were where the ashtray is.

  • @michaelwitas9482
    @michaelwitas9482 Рік тому

    Both Ford and Mercury for 1964 had factory A/C with its own controls separate from those of the heater. Mercury integrated their unit into the dash but Ford had a separate "hang on" style unit. For 1965, the factory A/C would become fully integrated, with combined heater and A/C controls.

    • @ClassicRideSociety
      @ClassicRideSociety  Рік тому

      Correct. The underdash unit for the galaxies was called a selectaire. I've restored several of those units

    • @michaelwitas9482
      @michaelwitas9482 Рік тому

      I think the Selectaire name was later applied only to the built in factory installed A/C. Ford also made in some early years a "PolarAire" A/C unit which I believe was a less expensive version of the early SelectAire (or whatever the top level under dash unit was called).

    • @jw77019
      @jw77019 10 місяців тому

      The select-air was factory and used fresh air. The right cowl ventilation supplied the fresh air. GM and Chrysler had more built in factory air systems, so by 1964 Mercury did this quick fix because the average person even then thought the factory Ac was aftermarket. Ford AC back then didn’t cool very well in my experience.

    • @michaelwitas9482
      @michaelwitas9482 10 місяців тому

      I"m wondering where the controls are for the AC on the 1964 Mercury. Are they integrated with the heater controls? It doesn't seem that way, but I cannot tell for sure.@@jw77019

    FoMoCo was bleeding huge amounts of cash by 1960 (because of the poor sales of both the Edsel and 1958-1960 Lincoln/Continental). So Ford CEO Robert McNamara made an executive decision to make the full-size 1961 Mercury as a rebadged Ford Galaxie...instead of a more distinctive car with a unique wheelbase and body. Thus, both the big 1961 and 1962 Mercurys were similar to the Galaxie. Sales of those cars were unspectacular so the unique Breezeway option was added for 1963. The power retractable rear window came from the 1958-1960 Lincoln with its top of the line Continental trim. The reverse C-pillar on the big Mercury lasted through 1966. In 1967 and 1968, there was a big Mercury with a retractable rear window but its C-pillar was slanted forward. Regardless, sales of big Mercurys were still rather weak..until the 1969 Marquis imitated the design of the Lincoln Continental (peaked chromed fender mouldings and thick C-pillars).

    The Mustang outsold this by a lot, and the Camaro and Chrysler muscle cars copied the Mustang. Before rust prevention was a thing, by 1974 in upstate NY we called them Rustangs, because most were in the junkyard from all the rust, not worth repairing the automatic transmission or engine.

All in all possibly savable even if it would take a few years to bring it back looking like new, & more importantly a proper car.

    In March of 1974 at 16 1/2 I got my driver's license. I saw a 1964 Mercury monterey four door sedan in someone's yard. Went up to the door asked if it was for sale the man said it was his mother in-laws car and she could no longer drive. I bought it for $50.00 dollars. For a New England car it was in good shape just needed a battery. It was red with a factory black painted roof. The best thing was the rear breezeway window. Well myself and a buddy spent a whole weekend compounding, waxing and cleaning this boat. It looked fantastic. Unfortunately a week later I plowed it into a light pole out partying with my buddys. I completely destroyed this poor car. Received fourteen stitches in my forehead. To this day I feel bad about wrecking that car.
