    Hello Paul, I was your first opponent "TheLastCookie", I unfortunately could not trophy with this amazing deck due to being mana screwed... So I feel you haha. It was a pleasure to play with you

    All the best for the new year, Paul. I started watching your content when you were doing the $2000 dollar events. As a very casual player who played tabletop in the 90s I hardly ever drafted on Arena. Now it's my favourite mode on a weekend and I've gotten to Diamond a few times just from seeing you work through the process. Thanks!

    I have a theory that with power creep in magic, there are just more hands that generally can’t be beaten, particularly off the play. It means that more games just seem to be going through the motions until whatever inevitably was going ti happen happens. You could argue that this makes removal more valuable, but then again it just adds to rng of opening and drawing removal cards. Power creep is the death of magic nuance

      Bo1 is a real problem in these events, the hand-smoother is utter nonsense, especially when the stakes are high. In this instance, with the high variance of Sealed, Bo1 nonsense, and the extremely aggressive nature of Bloomburrow as a format, I'm glad I didn't waste a bunch of money/resources trying this event.

  • @cmerr2
    @cmerr2 4 дні тому +10

    It's clear you're struggling with variance over the last few videos. Everybody watching knows you're a good player. Remember - your job isn't to win games, it's to make good content; which you're doing, even when you lose. Keep it up.

      @iGotUrEspada I mean the rake is easy enough to calculate. They are supposed to match by record so someone will get those boxes eventually.

    Because of the way they match, I think Game 1 will usually be the most volatile. It's when you're most likely to be paired with incredibly inconsistent, but bomb-heavy decks. The draw smoother algorithm favors this more than paper magic. As you win more you get paired with the consistent, but less volatile decks, I imagine.

  • @Scquwer

    I went 3 for 0 this time, it was brutal just like your experience. I did win on the last two win a box events, I appreciate your work and content. Even though you are suffering, it actually really helps folks like myself when we suffer through variance. It makes me handle the tilting so much better.

    Rough run, keep your head up Paul, you played great!

  • @Nicromatic
    @Nicromatic 4 дні тому +1

    No boxes is disappointing but do remember you can only take one loss on your way to 6 wins. That means you need a much higher than 70% winrate to get a box. In fact, with a 70% chance winrate you only have a 32.94% (0.7^6 + 0.7^6*0.3*6) chance of winning. A 50% winrate would be 6.25%.
    All the best for the New Years! From the couple of recent sealed videos, I do think Paul could do a collab video with one of the stronger sealed players to iron out some of his kinks.

    Great video as always. Unfortunate result.
    Would have liked to see the Trapper in for the Gerbils. You’d still be on 5 two drops and Trapper synergizes with both talents, questcaller etc. One Parting Gust and the Longstalk Brawl doesn’t quite make up for the random Hamster.
    Tumble Tangler is also a highly underrated card in your type of deck. The bakersbane, cache grab on squirrel, Bodyguard and Carrot Cake in addition to the two Homesteads is just enough to make it a good top end in this deck.
    Went 4-4 in this format for 8 boxes.
    5-3 in OTJ for 10 boxes.
    1-15 in Foundations for 2 boxes. (Zero 5k gem runs as well)
    Guess which format I liked the least🙈

    • @haumph
      @haumph  3 дні тому +1

      i think the trapper is just a bad card in most instances. i'd rather just have the solid two mana body in the gerbils. grats on your boxes

    My memory of this set was that I really didn't draft much. Being on the draw was such a huge punish in this set that it was nearly impossible to trophy. I'd maybe give an event like this a shot sometime but definitely not THIS set. Tough beats, Paul.

  • @patrickgonzales7825
    @patrickgonzales7825 4 дні тому +1

    Yikes, that's rough. If there's a deck that can win a box, it's this deck. I agree that GW is the best configuration for that pool. You've just been hit with the luck of the draw, which makes Magic fun and frustrating at the same time. Looking forward for the draft videos, as it's more controlled compared to Sealed. Leave all these bad luck in the past year and hope you have better results in the coming year. Cheers!

    If there was ever any doubt that the sealed format is way less skill determined than draft, look no further than this guy. One of the greatest drafters, consistently top 50 mythic, and yet you went, like 0-20 trophies in recent sealed events? Best of 1 games in sealed with only 2 losses for elimination should be a big red flag for players like you.

    • @jinxsiemcdeath6250

      Paul was from an era where you had to go 6-1 in sealed PTQs or 8-1 Day 1 in GPs (for a decent top 8 position after Day 1) so it's just a reminder of a not so kind past where he could cut it.

    • @adaml8827
      @adaml8827 4 дні тому +1

      @jinxsiemcdeath6250 yes but those are best of three matches. You can go 8-1 in best of 3 while losing 9 games to mana screw/mulligans. Having only 2 losses total is just too high risk to have proper skill expression
