Idky the translation error in the making of Hit Me Baby One More Time is so amusing to me.
Omg I just realized that Brittany was 17 when she wrote that. I mean she looks like 13 in the basketball bleachers scene
Hi Katie back again
IKR lol
I don't get it? If Max Martin wrote that in Swedish it would be "slå mig baby en gång till". And "slå mig" literally means "Hit me" Like I don't know how "Hit me" would have come from Swedish🤔
@@rose-marielundholm3597 I believe you could use "hit me" as a way to say call me so it is more of a person strugglin with the slang of another language than it is actually translating it directly.... Maybe

All latinos in this video were absolutely massive artists by the time the songs listed here as breakthrough were released. These were just the songs that kind of put them in English speaking countries' radars. That applies to Daddy Yankee, Enrique Iglesias and Shakira.
Yh definitely
Yup
Daddy Yankee was not that known in all Latin america before Gasolina. In Argentina, for example, that's the song that make him famous.
@@xidontcarex Might be a regional thing, but in the Caribbean and Central America he was already a phenomenon before 2004 (shit, I'm old).
@@xidontcarex In Ecuador, ''Yo nunca me quedo atrás''. That was way before than Gasolina. It was in 1994-1995.
That might’ve been one of TSwift’s first major pop feeling songs but some of her country songs definitely got her big like Our Song and Teardrops on my Guitar
"Picture To Burn" is pretty good too
not a Swiftie, but i remember hearing "Our Song" all the time when it came out
You should be a swiftie :)
The First song i heard of hers was probably shake it off

@@jackreeves7 you shouldn't force other people
@@plasma6549 they aren't forcing lmao.
I definitely wouldn't say some of these were the artist's breakthrough songs. OneRepublic had hits like Apologize WAY before Counting Stars came out. And Adele had Rolling in the Deep, Sia had Titanium, Taylor Swift had Teardrops On My Guitar, etc.
twentyone pilots had tear in my heart! i thought that was on the radio ages before stressed out
Agree... I was wondering if I was the only one old enough to remember Onerepublic’s Apologise 😅
Well, I guess, they're only sifting through lead artist releases and if so Sia doesn't exactly count with that criteria because Titanium was another instance of a producer having an indie artist as a vocalist.
Since Titanium was David Guetta song I would say “Clap Your Hands” by Sia was her breakthrough song. Don’t know but I was obsessed with this song as a child and it was on replay on the radio but it seems nobody knows about it...
@@D3bs1109 That's a pretty good one. Breathe Me would probably be the track I would point to in terms of beginning exposure as Sia states "it resuscitated my dying career" because Colour The Small One (an album of hers) had pretty subpar success in grabbing the attention of a mainstream audience so to have Breathe Me being used in the ending song for a popular TV series (Six Feet Under) really paved the way for Sia to continue performing and making music. Which was a... tumultuous road to even get to then and the pop hit Chandelier but it's a pretty cool career arc, at least. 😅
You should do a video titled "Songs that almost ruined artists"

For Gangnam Style, I think Roomie could have included “Repeatable dance”, or “Interesting visuals”. Which is a factor that made it big. People danced and repeated his moves all over the world.
"Being a meme" and "great drop" should be categories in this video
FOR SURE

Taylor's song which made her popular was actually Love Story, played all over Europe as well!

Ok, what i meant by this comment, was that I THINK (opinion. For all the twitter users that dont know what it is, google it yourself) latino pop is very generic. Sorry if that sounded wrong, but thats my OPINION on the music. Im not against the race, i just really quite dislike the music (and not even all of it, there is some good latino music). I really could say that about pop in general, just im talking about latino pop. And how the fuck am i racist
I'm so glad they put yellow in this video. Yellow is still one of the absolute best songs of the 2000s. I think the melody and the lyrics are both elite.
OneRepublic became famous from Apologize. Counting Stars is just their biggest hit to this day
Facts
I thought Maroon 5's breakthrough single that made them famous was This Love? And Taylor Swift's song that made her famous was Love Story/Teardrops on my guitar?
and twenty one pilot's house of gold
yes but I think joel is doing songs that made the artist "famous", not songs that kinda introduced them-
Or Teardrops on my guitar? That was a huge one for Taylor swift!
@@camillewortman16 yes! Sorry I thought Love Story was the one. But yes, Teardrops on my guitar made TS famous. My bad. 😁
@@ultimateally1807 not really. I think for M5, Harder to Breathe was the first single of some sort, but This Love made them more famous. For TS, Teardrops on my guitar was her actual breakthrough song that made her famous.
The fact that Little Mix's breakthrough song is their first single
Yeah with 1D it’s the same
The Jackson 5’s first four songs all went to number one which had never happened before
Mr.Brightside by The Killers. *BOOM!*
Or Somebody Told Me, whichever you consider 1st both were hits
Because they was on XFactor first.
Literally because they were on X Factor
What a lot of people point out when Avril came into the music industry was that she really stood out compared to all the polished and glam teen idols at the time like Britney and Christina. She showed a more raw and vulnerable side in her music as she experienced life as a teenager. A lot of young people connected to that and propelled her into stardom. Regarding the her first single, it was good song that people liked. What really did it for Avril was her image and lyrics I’d say.
Yeah... she wasn't like "other girls". 🙃

" Mistakes are the main reason for progress in the world" that actually lowkey makes a bit of sense
i have been making a lot of mistakes but i ain't progressing 🙂
Ever since I discovered Joel's channel, I have gotten into this routine in which I have to watch his new video after I get back from work.
Roomie, Ariana and Mac started dating in 2016 and that song was released in 2013 so they were only friends at the time. Hope that was helpful!
I thought Ariana's blow up song was "Problem" ft. Iggy Azalea
The Way came before Problem
The Way was kinda bubbling (already somewhat famous) under Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, etc.
2013 was a very big year and just being known like that is already notable.
The way reached top 10 on the US charts when it came out so it is her first
There should be 'catchy' category. Cuz most of the songs were a hit because they were a massively catchy
Yeah.
Dua Lipa's breakthrough song, at least here in UK, was a 2016 single called "Blow your mind".
Ya, but the UK is Dua Lipa central. Worldwide, it was New Rules. However, in the US, it wasn't until Don't Start Now she really got popular (which is kinda pathetic, Americans, why are you so slow towards new foreign artists
No one knew her here in Asia before new rules
The way Joel says “palatable” is so jarring every time 🤣
Joel, I am 50% deaf and I truly appreciate that your daily videos actually have some VOLUME .. I wear hearing aids at work, so I like to take a break from them at home and I don't like always using headphones either.. many thanks!!! for everything!

@@taylormomsenssidehoe same me too
Thrift Shop definitely made Macklemore famous. It was a bigger hit and it became a hit earlier. So there's really no reason to put Can't Hold Us on this list ahead of it
There are many songs in this video which aren't the first big hits of the artists.
@@timwra yeah like titanium has actually sia first hit not chandelier
@@leticiaguelere1222 50 Cent too, In Da Club first
And Adele had Rolling in the Deep first. And who else had trouble keeping up with who the artist was in the last 10 videos or so? Like Joel must've partaken in some VERY spcial lmþ coffee that nothing.
😳☕
Going through really stressful moments right now, watching this to help me calm, thank you Roomie
I feel like Hozier has really strong lyrics too. Great songwriting. Can make you feel things and go through experiences you actually never went through
Totally agree that his lyrics are a key part of his popularity and especially with this song.
I'd have thought "Apologize" was the song that made OneRepublic famed but maybe it wasn't as popular elsewhere, but it was literally everywhere in the UK, going back many many years to about 2006/2007... wow I'm old, I was 11 when that song came out probably welp
Yeah, I was confused, too. Apologize was HUGE in Germany, too. (and I'm even older, so feel free to feel better about yourself now ;-) )
Well technically it's not their song but they were a feature on Timbaland's song.
Was huge in Brasil too, I remember playing everywhere
It was everywhere. But OneRepublic somehow went off radar afterwards
@@therealbluetek It IS their song, released in 2006, then Timbaland remixed it with a more r&b kinda drumbeat and that version was released 2007. Both were popular af though.
Joel: adds a sync category
Joel 1 minute later: “I’ve never met this category in my life”
ive become OBSESSED with watching your videos now....thank you
I love New Rules because it’s not just an ex song, it can also be a song about healthy boundaries with abusive/toxic people! Love it! 😄
50 Cents breakthrough song was "In Da Club", that song was HUGE and you heard it everywhere and it definitely came out before "Candy Shop".
I think the researchers fro this video aren't really good at their job. or they figured "first time *I* heard about that artist" was the same as "breakthrough song".
In da club came along his first album in 03 which sold like almost 9 million copies and a 1 year later he released the massacre which included candy shop
I actually really like Nickleback XD I feel like a lot of people hate them just because it's popular to hate them
Before How You Remind Me, they had some really good songs from their first album. I saw them in concert before they were “popular.”
Agreed. I enjoy a lot of their music.
I'm not a huge fan, but there are some alright songs from Nickelback, and honestly I feel like it is just a meme to hate them at this point.
Plus who didn't vibe to rockstar when that came out? It was literally EVERYWHERE and EVERYONE seemed to love it.
Is it bad how much I like them? 😂
They’re not bad but i can only listen to Chad’s voice for so long lol

for Avril, she was verrrry cool at the time for young wannabe pop-punk girls. Definitely a vibe and attitude in the video was a big attraction. Everyone started wearing ties like she did in the video.
The fact that he didnt put down "yellow" for vibe... Criminal.
I agree, but this comment reminded me of that one tiktok where people would say”not a vibe” repeatedly lmao
I thought the same about Macklemore, I think that's just extremely subjective...
parachutes in its enirety was a vibe tbh
Parachutes is absolutely one of my all time favourite albums
Yessss!
I don't agree with the onerepublic one. Wouldn't it technically be "Apolegize" that made onerepublic famous?
yeah that's what I thought too, I thought they were already pretty big when Counting Stars came out
Technically it would be "apologize"
Yp
One Direction's first song was What Makes You Beautiful as well as their breakthrough song, how gret is that. Im a Directionar, but it makes sense ever since they had been formed on the x-factor they has started gathering fans and fame, and after releasing WMYB it just grew to heights.
The honesty, humility is sooooo mega cool. Love you soooo much Joel, and your team.😍😍😍😍😍
You should make a video where you see artists who completely changed genres (like Panic! at The Disco) and see if they where better before or after their change.
Kinda did in 'artists that sold out'
and also taylor swift (i think)
Oh, good one!
The Beatles would probably a good exemple too.
Sia did that with Chandelier as her solo career was mostly indie before that release. Actually, scratch that, I don't think any Sia fan who chimed in even during her 'We Are Born' era would've recognized that it was Sia because her vocals in all her studio albums back then were so much more withdrawn. If you want to see the difference; listen to Chandelier then either to Breathe Me, Soon We'll Be Found or Clap Your Hands right after. The vocal leap can be jarring. 😅

Taylor Swift: Tear Drops on My Guitar
Shakira: Ojos Asi
John Legend: Ordinary People
Macklamore: Thrift Shop
Twenty One Pilots: Holding on to You
Adele: Chasing Pavements
OneRepublic: Apologize

Video content ideas-:
1. Ranking songs named on food items ( the ketchup song, ice-cream, kiwi, cherry, sugar, champagne problems, etc)
2. ranking songs named on diseases or injuries or accidents or disasters etc( I'm not sure if we have got it in a number sufficient for making a video upon it)(like heart attack, Stockholm syndrome etc kinda).
3. or, you can guess a song along side a competitor by playing it on reverse and then gradually make it harder by increasing the speed on reverse by a certain percentage and every time you guess it wrong, idk put some punishment there.(I am not quite sure if it's gonna be a bit complicated to play).
4.The name place Animal thing game.( U can add categories like emotions, Time/numbers etc)
You can divide your white board in these four categories and then rank and decided which category has the best songs:-).
Like in name category-: songs named after names.( Olivia, bloody Mary, etc)
In place category-: Carolina ,cornelia street, etc.
Animal category-: animals, who let the dogs out roar etc.
Thing category-: umbrella, chandelier, maps, cardigan, etc.
Emotions category-: emotions, lonely, alone, happy etc.
Time/number category-: a thousand years, a thousand miles, 18, 22, 7 rings, A.M. etc.
5.Guess the song by describing the music video to the other person.
7. Famous artists who are good songwriters but bad/average vocalists vs famous artists who are good vocalists but bad/average songwriters.
6. Singers when they write a song for themselves vs when they write thr song for other artists.
And as you used to be a drummer; these topics might just interest you;
1. Most viewed drumming videos on UA-cam.
2. Singers who can drum vs drummers who can sing.

Funny to see how artists seem to have a different breakthrough song in various countries. But the songs you mentioned were also the breakthrough songs of Ariana and Rihanna in my country. 👍🏻
Where I lived in Europe, “Pon de Replay” got played a loooot. It was definitely the first song I ever seen from Rihanna. So even if it wasn’t big everywhere, it put her on the map.

Just like Birtney
yeah, that's the case for a lot of artists
okay but hozier was robbed of the "interesting lyrics" tag,,,, like in my opinion that song has the most interesting lyrics out of ALL of these
WHEN ROOMIE STARTED VIBING TO 6six9nine my heart broke
6ix9ine no hate tho
Honestly same I-
Idk 6six9nine has great beats and is really catchy.
samee-
SAME 😭
Joel is his own “Whose Line” episode: everything is made up and the points don’t matter.
As a major WLIIA fan..I appreciate your comment.
I feel like Hozier should've gotten a point for interesting lyrics as well. I mean c'mon man, "Take me to Church" and basically every single one of his songs (most of them anyway) have such great lyrics! Maybe it's just me tho
I love Coldplay and Keane. Everything they made had a painful sincerity that gave them an edge I just love.
Alright who put candy shop as 50 cents career making song in da club was literally in his debut album
My first thought too when i saw it.
I dont know in da club but i know candy shop. So i can agree on roomie
@@alberto-sama2022 in da club has more streams, more views on youtube and is considered top 3 most iconic rap songs, so Joels reaserchers are wrong.
Fun fact: in 1997 Chris Martin invited Keane's keyboard player to join Coldplay, but he refused
I was in Death Valley for a week, had absolutely no service or wifi the entire time, and the one thing I missed was Roomie
Now everytime Joel says "a little bit" my brain will complete the sentence with "pitchy", no matter what he's saying. Even if he says "a little bit sad", my brain's gonna put "pitchy" right over that "sad".
