    Ah ah, I finally understood the axe drill! When Pete Cowen explains it I've never managed to understand it. He's one hell of a teacher but I'm not sure that pedagogy is his forte ;-)

    The toe down drill is a game changer Alistair. Not only does it promote proper trail arm movement in the downswing, it's also makes keeping your right shoulder under the swing plane and rotating the lower body towards the target easier. I wish I had seen your video 25 years ago. It would have saved me a lot of brain damage! Cheers.

    One of the better videos I've ever seen! Whenever I get back to the range which seems to be taking me forever to make happen, this position will be my main focus.
    The trailing elbow position has been on my mind for months.

      Not played for 5 years... after playing for about 10...I got down to 12 but my consistency was very hit and miss,,,I just couldn’t fix an out to in swing path...I tried everything even lessons didn’t work with different pros...as a left hander but playing right handed. I never really used or thought about my right arm it just came along for the ride as my dominant left arm and wrist did all the work..I thought I was cursed. to hit a draw or even set the ball of right was a distant dream. After stumbling across this vid I instantly realised I’d struck gold... as my right elbow before and at impact was facing down the target line behind me... I could never get into the slot and now I know why.... after a few trips to the range I was shaping from right to left...Amazing....will try again next spring and who knows I may start up again. Like I said...for me BEST DRILL EVER thank you Alistair..........Stephen😇👍

    A big big thank you Alister I’ve finally started to nail the swing after watching and trying your drills .I have only just started to play the the wonderful game this summer and thought it would never happen after watching many people on UA-cam I came across your channel. Tried your drills out played a few games and went from 120 a round to 102 . I find I am hitting the ball more pure and straight all I can say is a big thank you and I hope you keep on posting more video’s that I can take and improve my game . 👍

    Mr. Davies, I truly wish to thank you for this video. I've watched it before, but I was concentrating on something else at the time and never realized the importance of this video. I am one whose elbow points away from the target. I thought this was the most powerful position, but I can never get consistency nor distance. I've tried every possible swing style, but only one club would work per style. In this video, I've learned to harness my potential. I've learned the importance of the follow through. I've also used and stretched muscles I've never felt before. Now I am hitting my wedges through my 3 wood quite nicely. So many thanks to you. I've only just modified my swing so consistency remains to be seen, but I have high hopes.

    This is very good. Thank you Mr. Davies. The right elbow action is key to getting proper ball compression at impact. The downswing position you show of the butt end of the club being even with the golf ball (face on view) while the shaft is still parallel to the ground is a position that almost every world class player gets into. This position just about guarantees some amount of shaft lean at impact, which is what we all want for consistent, compressed strikes.

    Good tip, Alistair. I'll give this a try. Oh, one thing: a typical pitcher in American baseball doesn't move his arm the way you describe, but every shortstop in our professional, big leagues does. Same game; different position. Our pitchers throw overhand not sidearm. The elbow, does lead, but in a different axis.
    By the way, Golf teaching pro, Peter Finch, does the second drill before nearly every shot he hits in Rick Shiels golf vlogs, and Finch, an average sized man, can often whack the ball a long way. Finally, you do a good job & thanks for replying to my comments.

    Excellent lesson, thank you. Question, at what point should a golfer feel the club release past their hands? We all strive to have our hands in front of the ball at contact and not release that lag tension, but at some point, the club head must release past the hands in order to get club head speed keep the ball from slicing. Any information would be greatly appreciated. By the way, that was a beautiful swing you put on that ball!

    • @adaviesgolf
      @adaviesgolf  5 років тому +1

    I've noticed in doing these drills, that I can achieve much the same feel of the "R elbow power storage and release" by feeling the R elbow tucked hard into the right side (as long as the R side is turning into the ball and not swaying into it). In making a throwing motion "at the ball" the R elbow flies out a little bit but throwing down a line between the toe line and the ball, forces the R elbow into the side until the release to be accurate and thrown with speed (I'm an ex-pitcher). Does that jive with what you are saying?

    Hi. What you are referring to is the vertical dropping of the club that all great players can do. Might I then suggest that you grab the grip of the club with a strong placement of your trail hand ( knuckles under the the grip of the club) and then pre rotate you trail arm with your trail elbow pointing inward towards your hip as you look down at the ball. Now simply swing the club and the vertical drop; (ideal lagging of the club prior to impact) takes place automatically. Cheers.

    Hello, I tried this tonight. It was quite weird the first few practice swings but i understood how the elbow needed to move to ensure the club reached the ball in the correct position. It is important to not pull the elbow down but to let it fall if that makes sense. After approximately 50 practice swings I hit a few balls with a 9 iron. The first few were topped but after a short while I hit some great shots, the ball went high with a little draw. I then tried the second drill for approximately 50 swings without ball then I hit balls. First few not great but then after a short while I got into the correct sequence. I then hit some 5 irons which went very well with a bit of draw. It felt effortless because I did not swing hard trying to thrash the ball. I will persevere with this for a few days then at the weekend I will hit woods (my woods are awful - hooking and slicing with the odd one going straight).

      You are probably not turning your lower body through. You would have to do that to square up the club

    Hi Al, do you think its possible to become a tour pro at the age of 30 ? Ive played for many years and my score varies around the 15 - 10 handicap mark. Im obsessed with golf but unfortunately because of work its very hard to get the practise in to take things to that next level. Whats your thoughts being realistic mate ?

    • @adaviesgolf
      @adaviesgolf  6 років тому

      +23lnp Hi don’t think age is an issue as long as ability is present. Only issue in age comes when you can’t hit it far enough. But 30 is absolutely fine, average age on Tour is older than that. Thanks

      To even consider it, you'd have to be scoring -3 to -6 each and every time you play at your local club.

    So are we supposed to always point the club head to the ground? Works in theory but not when you go back to a normal grip. Just a band aid.,

      Hi Joseph, the idea of any practice swing or drill is to tell your brain what you want it to do and give your body feels. Hopefully either through conscious thought or slowly improving current movement patterns you should see change! Al

    So if we did this with a normal setup, the clubface would be 90 degrees open at impact. What then?

    • @adaviesgolf
      @adaviesgolf  5 років тому

      Hi Joseph, remember this is a drill. But to get the face square it relies on body, arm, and wrist rotation also. Thanks al

    Man, that is one perfect recipe for a high push 100 yards right of target. I watched this video several times and my eyes didn't deceive me. At the moment of impact, your watch (back of your left hand) was facing the camera. In other words your left hand is 90 degrees open. The back of the left hand IS THE CLUB FACE and it should be facing the target at the moment of impact and it also should be bent so the wrist is slightly closer to the flag than the back of the left hand. This will deloft the club a bit and if you look at any tour pro, you'll see this position at impact. When "they" talk about trapping the ball, that's the position they are referring to. Also, when the back of the left hand is facing the target, the right wrist is bent backwards. That's another sign of good impact position. However, you're the instructor, not me so if this is the way you want to teach your students, far be it from little old me to rock the boat. One last thing....."FORE RIGHT!"

      Please show me a publication where the back of your left hand is the club face. The back of the left wrist is angled at address. Plus this a drill!!!!!!. Drills influence the normal. In twenty years of coaching I have had one player that overdoes this move. So therefore won’t do anymore any harm.

    Love your video!
    However you pointed out that if you were a pitcher; the trail hand would be behind the trail elbow. And you demonstrated this at the shallow end of the swing of the club.
    No disrespect intended but I believe this is the part that has confuse me for years as I was attempting that exact move as I tried to release the club with my trail forearm at the bottom of my swing. Then of course my shot connections became terrible and this action brought me down a rabbit hole where I never recovered until now as I felt I needed to think too much about my hands wrist, hips and knees position and actions as well. And as if theses elements in my swing were not enough I also needed to specifically rotate and release my club in perfect timing and tempo at impact while I attempted to have all my body parts in sequence. And not to mention the constant practice and exercises over the years that never actually improved my game Yuck! 😁
    Yes I am a PGA victim being slaughtered by countless and meaningless advice by PGA professionals
    But not any more and never again because I have discovered the one secret of golf that any player can uses with instant success.
    Delusional you say? No at all!
    Simply put the magic move of golf is at the top of my backswing I forget about my hands altogether.
    My only swing thought from now on to activate what I coined ' The Magic Trail Elbow ' at the start of my downswing. Another words instead of having my trail elbow ahead of my trail hand at the shallow end of my swing as you just demonstrated in this video; I start this action at the top of my downswing allowing my trail elbow to lead my trail hand. This one precise action on my part automatically opens up my lead side; shallows my club and brings my trail elbow in front of my trail hip allowing me to swing my arms as fast as I wish to do for full, complete and automatic finish of my swing.
    Forget about your hands and try my 'Magic Trail Elbow' move at the top of your downswing; not at the bottom; for yourself and discover golf's secret move for yourself. Sense the new and powerful feeling of simply swinging your arms in a golf swing by allowing all the other parts of your body to respond to the activation of your magic trail elbow. Then let me know if I am delusional or not. Cheers
    P. S. Harvey Penick In his Little Red Book on the magic move in golf; touch on this significantly years ago and I just thought I would bring it back to life today.

    So once you practice these drills you'll be wanting to learn another drill that'll help you square the club face through impact as these drills are going to mess that up pretty good.
