    It’s not a flaw that the settings change for each type of delay; in fact, it’s very useful. This way, when recalling the desired type of delay via MIDI, that setting is retained.

    • @davidmultimedia2024
      @davidmultimedia2024 Місяць тому +1

      Exactly, definitely not a flaw.. it's actually designed that way on purpose. Still, it would be cool to be able to choose the way we want the reverb type selection to behave. Still, I don't really care because I usually don't use the same settings on different types of reverb anyway.

    • @MostlyElectrolytes
      @MostlyElectrolytes Місяць тому +1

      Yeah, but I think that whatever you store the preset with it is recalled with those specific settings. Personally I like the fact that if I'm dialing it in and then go to a different model I can dial in specific to that model and once I screw it up to the point that I hate it, I can flip back to the other model and the last settings are still there.

      Usually in software-based stuff like this there's a way to hit a "padlock" that informs the unit to retain some (whichever your prefs tell it to include) attributes. For example the Omnisphere synthesizer has a page where you can click or unclick the attributes that will be "held" when the padlock is selected. For the tonex unit this could translate to a adding a switch or a latch/momentary function (latch behavior will, for example, act to "hold" those preferences when you select the next delay type. Whereas 'momentary' will fully change all the parameters/attributes with each act of switching.

    There is a boost, but they camouflaged it as the amp EQ. In reality, there is no real amp EQ, you have a capture of the amp dialed in. The EQ isn't voiced as a TMB amp-style EQ. If you look at the advanced tab, you see that it is a parametric EQ including gain settings. THAT is your boost pedal that can be used to drive the capture or sculpt the tone afterwards. It's odd that IK fails to explain this clearly.
    3:00 this 100% needs to be fixed ;)
    The chorus scratches the itch though.
    Also, so happy there is a computer editor. Editing this on the pedal is...less than intuitive. Kudos for sticking to it though, but yeah, no editing on the fly for me.

    • @davidmultimedia2024
      @davidmultimedia2024 Місяць тому +1

      That's true, it acts as an input boost.. but FYI, you don't have to open up the advanced tab, as the gain knob you see there is the same as the one on the amp interface.

    • @rutger4131
      @rutger4131 Місяць тому +2

      @davidmultimedia2024 I know ;) But it becomes very clear how it works 'under the hood' in the advanced tab, where you can set frequencies and Q-values.

    I confess the use of the pedal and it's parameters is quite complicated. But I LOVE mine. Punches so high above it's price point. I can't imagine trying to access all this stuff without a screen on the Tonex One (still want one). I have been letting it float between 3 rigs I have. I don't have a band or play out, just collect a few pedals, playing since '81.

      I have a ToneX One, and it helps to think of it as a ToneX player for presets you create in ToneX CS (included). You have Dual (A/B) or Stomp (On/Off) modes, and only Gain and Volume controls on top of that. I use it with bass, and The Fridge (Ampeg SVT) model is my permanent A preset now. I'm trying others on B e.g. enjoying some SWR models.

    I am really enjoying the tremolo additions and the delays sound great if limited. Those are two effects I fervently wished for when I first got my Tonex. Now I have them for free. Pretty damned good! Also, to know that the pedal can do these things might inspire some clever programmers to really go to town!

  • @peterharvin2775
    @peterharvin2775 Місяць тому +3

    I was going to do the sort of "damning with faint praise" thing by saying that the effects sounded good but maybe not stellar, when I realized I was missing the point. That they provided them at all is a credit to them. I completely agree with your complaints, however. A few more tweaks would be nice.

    Great video Leon. Thanks for your time. I love the update! Totally agree with everything you said though. I use my ToneX pedal live now, I have the FM3 and the Amperium Live. Those are a bit too pricey for me to take out each night to a pub and have drunks falling over it.
    I have gone out and got another ToneX pedal, so I have one for studio work and one for live.
    If IK could implement the suggestions that you mentioned (you’re not the only one that has mentioned these ‘ideal updates’).
    It would be a real market crusher if they did!
    As always, keep rocking & thanks. 😊

    Great vid, very happy they added some decent fx, no doubt to compete with the Nancortex. Ive been on the fence regarding IK's capture collections, the Satriani sounds pretty cool tho. Hopefully Black Friday deals are coming for people who already own the Tonex pedal...regarding new collections, I for one, would love to see IK try their hand at VH tones... hell, just Suhr SL67/68, Germino for the roth era, maybe CAE 3+ and SLO for the Hagar era. Dont get me wrong, Tonex has plenty of great plexi captures, but none that really get that overdriven power amp "splattering" compression effect ya hear in brown sound-style demos of the Suhr SL68/67 and Germino Plexi, for example. Here's hoping.

    When they brought the tonex out it was meant to be a Pro sounding unit at an entry level price. They thought it would do OK but the response has been overwhelming. The idea was over time they would maybe not even update it but make a model 2. I have heard just such a model is slated for NAMM 2025 in an interview a year ago.

    My only complaint is that there is no spillover. Everything else is super, fantastic. Considering that it costs about 370 euros, and it has absolutely everything in it, so you can simply take it alone on your next gig I think it's a heavy bang for the buck.

      I have a way of having spillover trails on any guitar tones, but it has to be done in your DAW. I'm using a cheap foot midi controller, and I created some macro commands to switch from one signal chain to another, seamlessly, with fx spillover! Plus, you can use all the plugins you want for all your tones. It's all i'm using now at home, since it's like having the most customizable guitar rig ever.. possibilities are endless!

      I'm actually the very first guy in Canada that got a Kemper (pre-ordered before it even passed the canadian electrical certification). I loved it, but i ended up selling it and bought an Axe Fx II, which at the time was more what I was looking for (more processing capabilities)... but now, I'm 100% back with plugins, and TONEX/NAM feel noticeably more authentic/analog than the Kemper was (as impressive as it was at the time.. the difference in touch response can definitely be felt). Of course, this was way before the new Liquid profiles though.. so I can't judge how it is now. As for the Nano, I couldn't be less interested. Not only it's not as good as TONEX/NAM, but I hate Neural DSP's marketing deeply. I only use a few of their Archetype plugins, only for some of their ''unique'' FX.

    I'd like to see an update where the user can edit presets or tone models on the pedal from the software. I have never been able to edit presets while playing live using the software. No matter what i do, there is too much latency. I have always had to download the tone model to the pedal and then edit it. Usually being its a pedal , i have it on a pedal board, so its kinda inconvenient. Also if you can capture over drive pedals, then why cant they add a block for drive pedals ? This would allow the user to add different drive pedals to an amp / cab tone capture.

    I think the reason for the lack of a boost is you can profile your amp with a boost. If I had a TONEX one I would load it up with profiles of my favorite boost pedals. The boost I always use is a MXR super badass OD and I just slap it in front of my TONEX with some of my favorite front of amp effects and I have a super pedalboard to go direct.

    I have some issues with the delay! It could really do with a treble roll off as both the digital and tape delays are quite bright. There is also no spill over and this causes a bigger problem, if you bypass the delay via midi the repeats stop dead - but turn the bypass off and last notes in the buffer will play! This can be an issue with true bypass delay pedals but there is no need for it to be the case with a plugin or digital product. It could also do with a anolog delay. I think the modulations are well useable but I wish I could say the same about the noise gate - its bloody awful! It needs a hold setting or replacing with a proper noise reduction option. BTW: if you put the noise gate post amp (in the plugin and the pedal) it seems to work better and doesn't chop off the guitar sound so viciously.... But at least the update was free ;-)

    I'd like to see them add the built in compressor to the global settings. As it is some amp captures are louder than others and I haven't been able to figure out how to make them all the same level. Could be operator error lol. What I do is run it into a compressor pedal before my power amp so that when playing n switching captures they all stay around the same level.

The amount of comments about people wanting to get rid (many changing their minds when a rare helpful video is posted by a user) confirms that they’ve still not got it right. There really shouldn’t be anything too confusing or frustrating about using the editor. Some strange operation hoops users have to jump through just to do basic stuff. Most unintuitive editor out there.

    Honestly i was probably the totally wrong audience for the tone x; all i had was a $140 used orange crush 20 that made way too much noise, i wanted to record music and didnt have a bass amp, i didnt have that much money. Saw this was super cheap, has tons of tones, what could go wrong? Probably that none of these tones are for me, i skimmed through as many as i could and liked about 3, i tried fiddling around with all different types of cab and amp combinations and jesus none of them were any good, either mud city, everything blending in together and being indiscernable, or god forbid i tried chugging, instead id get a toot. 💨 not to mention that i couldnt put the amplitube 5 presets onto the tone x itself; which i assumed you could do because why in the world would it be bundled with it if it wasnt able to. I wanted it as a permanent solution, but dont see myself trusting a computer to stay alive and not crap itself to support the tone x and a whole live show. I shouldve just went for the amp i was eyeing for a while, biggest regret and waste of $400 😞

There's no way to make changes on the pedal and with only two (3 possible) preset, it's not like you can turn effects on/off as there's no midi implementation. For the Tonex, you could build presets for the effects but for the One, it's more of an interesting curiosity.

    Just bought Tonex Max but that is a ripoff. I assumed it would unlock amps in Tonex, so both on desktop and iPad. But on iPad it is an extra 300 euro purchase to unlock Max. With the big pedal you get the Max software for desktop and that is fine. But be aware if you have a tablet as well. If you go for just the software, I’d recommend Bias FX, Helix Native or Neural.

      Pretty awesome right? The UI does my head in but I could live with 3 sounds at a gig so this would slay.

    I can't believe it still has no overdrive in it...without it it's pretty useless to me 🤷🏻‍♂

    Some strange choices from IK in this update, and I agree with every one of the points you've made.
    It does make you wonder which guitarists they involved in the design phase. Which guitarist WOULDN'T ask for some drives up front, or not say 4 spring reverbs is overkill if it means I don't get something more ambient added in there. Or why can't the delay and reverb go before the amp, that one in particular is just plain weird because so many 70s and 80s tones depend on things going in front of the amp :-/
    I do think the Rotary and Chorus sound really good though, and you could almost use the Tonex on its own at this point... but still not quite.
    Which leads me to your point about competition in the market: there are some companies who seem to find it really difficult to hear what I'm reading about them in lots of different places on the internet and social media, it's probably because it all seems like noise from their perspective, and you can always find contradictory opinions. I think I'm pretty good at filtering these days, and it seems to me that the general consensus about companies like Roland (Boss), IK Multimedia, Native Instruments, Kemper is that they aren't listening. They need to start listening because competition is fierce and if they think they're too big to fail they better think again. Companies like Hotone and Mooer to mention just 2 that spring immediately to mind, are starting to look more and more appealing to lots of buyers because they clearly understand that the modern customer expects most things that CAN be included, you guessed it, WILL be included. They're listening and responding with powerful functionality and excellent value for money.
    The old order need to wake up and smell their business strategy because atm it needs a good wash 😂

    I have one of these and it's absolutely infuriating to use. The software and the pedal are so obtuse.

    The whole IK Multimedia way of doing things is clunky. Their software is an eyesore and unintuitive. I have a Tonex but I just do not use it. I guess I need to get it back out and try again but honestly I have too many other pieces of gear and software that is more inspiring and satisfying to play.

    Tonex user interface is atrocious. What I find that helps is use my pc to dial in the tones and effects than create and save a preset, then drag and drop it into the pedal.

    This UI design is so bad for 2024 as it reminds me of rocktron 90s rack devices and even there thanks to 3 knob logic it was more thought in rather this 1 knob xes

    No TONEX update for iOS. They gave the big middle finger to iOS users. Their snide response was "well...we never said we WOULD update iOS". So all the iOS users, paid or not, don't get the update. Dimehead player vs TONEX pedal looking much more likely next year. Best Regards and Best Wishes!!

    I really wanted to like the ToneX…it ended up being the quickest “meh, put it on the shelf” piece of the last couple years. It never sounded good. I love how it sounds for other folks, but it obviously just takes a ton of work to get it there. So I went back to my amps… No biggie. 🤷🏻‍♂️😎🎶

      Did you spend some decent time looking through, demo-ing, and downloading the most popular amp captures on Tone-Net?? Honestly, yeah, for some silly reason, pretty much all the amp captures that came with it stock left me feeling very "meh" the first day I got it long ago. Then later I discovered the immense world of Tone-Net and THAT was the missing sauce I had been expecting! There's tons of fantastic tones to get for 100% FREE and often there are even better ones to be had via finding people who make even better captures and sell them (usually) for very little $$.
