you say the same as my music teacher just told me: a good musician makes a cheap instrument to sound like an expensive one, and a bad musician makes an expensive instrument sound like a cheap one! and your HB guitar sounds amazing because you are a GREAT musician

I'm 53 years old and just started on my guitar journey after 30 years first picking up a guitar. I bought a Harley Benton DC 580 , and although it's not a premium guitar, I was blown away by its quality and sound for the price. Just ordered a DC Custom which I know is very similar, but of higher spec. Cant wait to play it. In this day and age, especially for the beginner ( like me) , there's no reason to spend thousands on something you can get along with and make great sounds.
I love your reasoning for liking Harley Benton guitars, they do what you want, they feel great, and they sound great. I know this comment is two years after your video but it's still very relevant. Thank you for not being a brand snob, and thank you for this video. Happy Christmas to you, your family, and your followers. Huge thumbs up for a very honest review of budget guitars. 👍👍👍☮☮☮

You are absolutely right. I've played guitar for more than 20 years from classical and own more than 20 Harley Benton guitars as well as some other guitars like Fender, Gibson etc. It doesn't matter how much the guitar costs but how clever the person plays it and produces great notes. I admire you... Thanks...

Jonathan that was so well said. The tone of the HB, the art of the HB and the personality of the HB makes each one special and separates all HBs from YOUR HB. Their economy allows us to indulge ourselves to a point beyond where any other manufacturer even comes close.

Agree 100%. I have 7 guitars. A couple Fenders, and an Ibanez, and a project. Besides my 3 Harley Bentons. They are all great guitars, but the mods I usually wind up doing are the same no matter who or how much the guitar costs. And the things I change to make it my guitar, are usually things I can do or learn to do. H/Bs are good, affordable guitars. Thanks for the great videos!

You're not the only one... They're very well-made, they sound good with their stock pickups and they have an attention to detail you would usually never find in that price range...
I own 149 guitars and I design, build and repair guitars for a living and my collection includes many high-end and vintage guitars but...I just LOVE Harley Bentons...I have bought 7 so far and they're all excellent... Of course they can always be upgraded here and there but as is they're great...

I'm with you Jonathan. My favourite guitars are the ones I've modded and made my own. I've bonded with them. I bought my first Harley Benton recently. It's a JB-40FL 3-Tone Sunburst fretless Jazz style bass. Great build quality. The most outstanding feature of this bass the Blackwood (Pinus Radiata) fretboard. It's similar to rosewood in colour but it's hard with a tight grain like ebony !! On a bass that costs 148 euro. Crazy. Thanks for the usual great content.

  • @ricardoslhenriques
    @ricardoslhenriques 5 років тому +2

Hi Jonathan. I currently own 15 guitars in total, only four are non-HB. I’ve modified all HBs, because IMHO that’s what an HB is all about. I learned to work a guitar from the inside out with HBs, because I’m not worried about the price, so i can go terribly wrong and start over (but never happened 😉) . If i may present a generic suggestion, and keeping things cheap: shielding with 2-side copper or aluminum tape, buying a set of Vanson pickups from EBay, oil the arm, polish the frets, and little other things with tuner heads and nut. And will have no regrets whatsoever.

Update: I just got my Harley Benton TE-70 Black Paisley yesterday and I'm blown away with the condition it came in. They are actually playable right out of the box! I kid you not. So after the excitement period, (which took me 3 hours of playing it) I decided to check it over in more depth just to see just how close to perfect is actually is. The intonation was close. I think I actually adjusted one screw which was only off by very little. The action was almost perfect. I lowered the action at the saddles a small amount, but now by much. Everything else is perfect. I don't see the need to change anything on it. The pickups sound great. The switches work perfect. The nut was cut very well too. I recommend Thomann to anyone who is looking at adding to their collection. They are very well made instruments and the quality control of the Harley Bentons at Thomann is top notch! I will be a repeat customer.

Haha... Ive never once... Not ONCE... wondered why you were choosing Harley Bentons. I already know.
Ive been playing for a long time and ive thrown a lot of cash at guitars over the years.
    Gibsons, Fenders, Heritage.
What it took me years to learn is that dollars dont equate to tone or feel or playing better.
There is no better feeling than when you buy something for very little and it rips.
Even if you have to do a few mods to make it "exactly" right....youve only spent 500 bucks on a great instrument...not $2000+.
To me its like the judge dismissing your parking ticket...getting something for free...and even better that it suits you perfectly.
    Great video.
    Thanks!

I just picked up my third Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier and 4x12 cab today, I have have a few PRS guitars ranging from a S2 Standard 24, to a CE24 to a $5,000 limited run 10 top. I just ordered a Harley Benton CST24 in Ocean Flame and I’m so excited, I can’t wait for it to get here!!!

Some people enjoy modding into the instrument that is perfect for them. There is also satisfaction in tinkering. I know I enjoy it. I play a lot of Squier guitars and I alway change the pickups and replace the wiring and pots. I also change the nut and put inexpensive Jinho locking tuners. My favorite playing and sounding guitar among Fender USA, Squier, Heritage, my favorite is my butterscotch Squier Affinity. I put the locking tuners, bone nut, switch, wiring and pots and I put Fender Noiseless #3 Tele Pickups. I have probably $500 in it that I will never be able to sell, but I don't sell guitars anymore. That one is a keeper. So odd to prefer the cheapest guitar in my small collection of 10. lol

    Because they are affordable.
Specially the "better" lines like the vintage or the deluxe deliver an enormous amount of guitar for the money.
I got me a Tele Deluxe, a Strat deluxe an SG Standard and a Jazzmaster Vintage from them.
All used but like new because many people buy them to start playing and then stop and the guitars end at ebay or similar platforms. I like that. That way you can go and test the guitar before you buy it and get the best ones out of it.
The only thing is if you buy the really cheap ones (standard and classic series) be prepared to swap the pickups (usually ceramics) for something from Roswell (AlNiCos) they are not too expensive and they deliver a great sound.
I did so with that SG and its now on par with the Vintage and Deluxe models.

Some 30 years ago it was realy important to have good guitars and amps but today things are very different, even cheap guitars are playable and with good sounding but for me the most important thing it's the amount of quality pedals at reasonable prices we can have very easily and sometimes with a litle luck and creativity we make great sounds with those pedals.

I can’t believe how good these guitars are for the price.
I thought I would try one out after seeing the reviews and price and was very pleasantly surprised when I got one ( a JA 60 CC in sea foam green).
The pickups ( the Roswell type on mine) are not bad at all.
I own guitars by Fender, Gibson, Hagstrom and PRS and this guitar stands up well against them all.
I may do some modding on it, but as it stands it is a nice guitar to play and to look at.

My first guitar was a Harley Benton Fusion Pro 2 ( the Ocean Turquoise one you demo'd). Since then, I have owned 4, the most I ever paid for one was $275 (for the Fusion Pro), and I have only been disappointed once (my Strat copy I paid $75 for - the neck was twisted and couldn't be fixed). I am now a proud owner of one of the last guitars you demo'd ( the PRS SE Hollowbody Standard - in Fire Red Burst). All I can say is, if you recommend it, I feel it is always a safe bet to purchase it. Thanks for all your effort and honesty. Here in Cleveland, Ohio, where the 'Rock and Roll Hall of Fame' is, it's funny that I get my guitar advice from someone on the other side of the world.

  • @keithsmith9889

I totally agree. I mean i bought a gidson sg. A studio i think it was about 650 used it played ok swapped the nut and wound up swapping pickups put in some pearly gates cause gidsons just weren't responsive enough. A friend of mine bought a harley benton sg style had diffrent style jack not out of the front which i actually liked a lot more. When he told me that was stock set up i felt a little crushed and suprised that that 160 dollar guitar played a little. Better than that 800 Gibson studio and sounded damn near as good as that Gibson i have come to the conclusion pickups you'll grow in and out of what you like 3 months from now might not be the same as now. But at least with harley benton you always seem to get a really good pretty strong platform to start with. And they are all so much better than the budget friendly stuff that was available 30+ year's ago when i started. I think they have really managed to tap a pretty wide market for anyone who wants a certain style at a budget friendly price.

These guitars simply take you where you need to be or they otherwise have directions to that same destination with modifications. These are the guitars that anyone, yes anyone, can take apart, familiarize themselves with the construction, and do some of their own work to basically make their own guitar the way they want it. The necks have all been great in my experience (4 HB's in my collection) and they stay in tune. Good necks, good tuning stability, and good craftsmanship (finish, neck pocket) is all i ask, the rest i can change or leave the same depending on how i feel, not because i have to. I don't talk about my other guitars much because they are know, but to hopefully have someone get the positive experiences that i have had through Thomann and Harley Benton, that i want to share. I sound like an advertisement, but i don't care. Enjoy these guitars folks.

All your HB guitar modding has been great (based on my subjective opinion). You and your guitar tech did a fantastic job. Such modding is also the reason why I like affordable guitars. I don't hesitate to "mess" with these guitars while trying to shape the sound and playability according to my taste (it takes often years). Why I am not buying many HB guitars (I have a few) is that the trend of today are 12" radius fretboards. Sure I could change the neck (to my preferred smaller vintage neck radii) but that is too much effort for me. But this was the only reason why I was going more for Vintage Guitars (designed by Bruce Wilkinson) or the more expensive Squier models (those with 9" inch fretboard radius) and not with more HB guitars. I assume that for most people HB guitars are just a fantastic option if your budget is limited or if you want to learn more about modding.

Thank you so much for your videos. I as well am quickly becoming a Harley Benton fan. My first was a TE-52 Vintage , and it was so nice out of the box that I immediately ordered an ST-20 HSS. I have a Mexican Strat, a Gibson Les Paul, an Epiphone Wildkat, A Washburn, an Ibanez, a PRS Santana and a handful of cheapies, like Johnson, Washburn Lyon, and Squier (I LOVE modding up cheap guitars and experimenting with different tone), but the Harley Bentons are really impressing me RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX!
The only thing I did to the TE-52 was replace the bridge saddles with a set of compensated brass saddles that I had from another bridge. If I hadn't already had those saddles I would have left it alone.

I bought two Ibanez RG hard tail guitars with basswood bodies and maple wizard necks NOS for $300 each. Big buttery frets, easy and inspirational to play and awesome sound. The pickups were decent but I replaced all of them because I have specific tastes when it comes to pickups. I now have two awesome bar guitars I can throw on the back of my motorcycle here in Bangkok and not worry. Actually, I really love these things and don't want anything to happen to them they are so cool!

I think for most musicians its just great value for money. Sure they arent going to beat guitars in the $3000 price bracket but they would give any $800-1000 guitar an awesome run for their money and probably even more if you choose to upgrade some of the stock parts on the HB. Dress the frets to get them smooth and level. just small QoL improvements will make such a big difference.

You are a breath of fresh air Jonathan. I wish more professional musicians would drop the ego and realise the days of big brand names ( which demand ridiculous price tags ) are well and truly numbered. One of my all time favourite musician's was bassist, Jaco Pastorius, and he " butchered " his old bass ( ripping the frets out and filling them with wood filler to achieve a fretless bass :-) ) he made that thing sing like no other musician before or since - the most important ingredient is talent. A great instrument can cost very little these days and with a few modifications, to suit individual tastes etc. can become more than an equal to the big brands. Respect my friend x

It makes perfect sense to upgrade a cheap guitar. Cheap guitars are built mostly well enough to be a player. Then you can put the best pickups and hardware in and still have plenty of money over, then just buying an expensive guitar. I bought a secondhand Squier vintage modified strat for 180 euros. Its now got a big block brass tremolo, Fender cs 69 pickup in the neck, a fat 50s in the mid and a tonerider in the bridge. It sounds farbetter than a Fender costing up to 1400 euros. Man I just love this guitar and I have far more expensive guitars to compare to. And a few Harley Bentons that have been modified as well.

I enjoyed seeing your guitars. They sound great. I prefer my Fender guitars, strats. Since 99 I have had 5, now the newest American model with 3 single coils. I don’t know why but they just make me happy. Last January I could have purchased any electric but I just kept coming back to it and it inspires me to play. But you notice I didn’t say they are the best. That thinking only keeps you from finding one that “gifts you a tune” as David Gilmour says. I would love to try the hb fusion roasted maple, I have never had one like that, so I hope I can try their guitars someday. Just play the one you love and you can’t go wrong!

@@von.xix000 Hallo. This is a difficult question. Perhaps, maybe, it would be fair to say that the TE-70 Black Paisley is slightly better. The tuners are definitely better and I like the brass saddles. The finish on the fret board is also slightly better. However, the TE-52 looks and feels great to play. I like both but the TE-70 is a minuscule degree "better" in terms of finish. That said, I tend to play the TE-52 more. If you are willing to pay a wee bit more, I also highly recommend the Squire Classic Vibe 50s (and it's by Fender, if that matters). I have one of these and it is awesome! I also have a Fender American Special which is great but my best, and favourite Tele is my American Original 50s. This is a truly marvelous Tele! However, it all comes down to cost and what you can buy for the price. Harley Bentons are seriously good copies for almost no money. I love all 5 of my Teles ;)

    Jonathan great as always!
I have a idea for a subject I would like to see your opinion on. The never ending discussion on 8's 9's 10's. I have settled on using 10-46. But it has occurred to me the lighter strings may not be given a fair review by many. They have less mass and tension and that results is less energy going into the pickups. So they sound different and thinner. AT THE SAME AMP SETTING. To be compared by the ear they are at a disadvantage. With all the modeling Amps and Pedals out now days it seems the lighter strings lower output could be equalized to some degree. I would be interested in how you look at it and I'm sure it could be a interesting subject to be investigated in a different manner by looking at physics or limitations of different gauges. I have seen so many reviewers go from old 9's to new 10's or 11's and think its just the size change and not the output created into the pickups or age of the old strings. As a pro you know how one guitar and tuning is used for this song and is swapped for a different guitar and setup for the next. A large percentage of the audience has no idea why the guitar's are swapped out live. It is a large subject which you have a much better insight of it than many of us on this side as a hobby. It could very well be a entire series of videos for you if you need subjects to cover.

I think you're right about the primary issue being pickups, at least when it comes to sound. As far as the shape of the neck, fretboard, etc. It doesn't cost more to cut one shape than another so once you work out the shape that's that. It's almost a shame those guitars don't cost more, they deserve too.
