I laughed more in the torgue segment than my 300 hours of bl3
This is what make Scooter the best character in the series for me, tragic but hilarious through an through, it take a special kind of writing to make you laugh at an absolutely tragic backstory.
Not that I disagree with core message of the video but let’s be honest Zane is hilarious
i appreciate the characters actually being able to talk a fair amount in this game and they do have very funny comments about things! I was just focusing on how dialogue in the story was written, maybe I could cover the characters in future.
The playable vault hunters are the best part of the game.
@@guidedexplosiveprojectileg9943 the playable vault hunters, specifically Moze and Fl4k, were the only reason I played through BL3 the first time. Though once I’m able to convince my friends to go through the game with me I’ll have a few more reasons
i hated playing zane because i thought his lines were incredibly cringe, fl4k's lines were really good tho
@@jureklemencic7316 Flak is the worst of the bunch, and that's a difficult task because Amara exists. He's trying way to hard to be some death obsessed robot that he comes off as some fedora tipping millennial. Which is a shame, because his voice could be used for something so much better.
Borderlands 3 is like if you took the Hell hath no fury side quest in BL2 and made that comedy a whole game. (The one where claptrap says "Chill Out")
Even that was kinda funny because it was supposed to be claptrap being unfunny on purpose
@@justagoose7601 True.
What always gets me about the terrible, terrible writing for BL3 is that the further you get from the base game the better it gets. I had a few sensible chuckles from the casino, lovecraft, and western DLCs. Though all of the dlc's are incredibly self contained, so that's probably why they get infinitely better. The main plot is saddled with baggage about trying to expand Siren lore (who asked for this?), an evil cult run by and made up of morons, and how family is evil except for the random assortment of people you have no connection to.
Keep it simple, keep it short, keep it somewhat relatable. BL2 is relegated to one planet, trying to get revenge on a guy who attempted to murder the Vault Hunters. There was a lot of meat on that bone that Gearbox STILL can't come up with a better villain, or better characters, then the ones they introduced in BL2.
i do feel like they wanted to build on borderlands as a universe so much they expanded to too many planets, like each game was either on pandora, eplis or somewhere inbetween like helios. this meant you could build those areas up more and get used to them. bl3 you spend so little time on each planet they can be kinda forgettable at times and not be established as much, maybe they shouldve just focused on 2 planets, 3 at the most. pandora and athenas, maybe promethea, eden 6 kinda just feels like the hammerlocks game hunt dlc in a planet form and nekra felt too easy to find and dull as the "eridian homeworld"
I super vibe with comparing the tourge dlc with borderlands 3 comedy. Me and my friend play both games on and off and both commented on how the tourge dlc made us laugh a lot and we couldnt even tell you why. Yeah the voice acting performance is excellent but lets be real its the same joke over and over. And yet we laughed. Its safe to say we never laughed playing borderlands 3. For me personally another aspect that super turns me off is how unapologetically and completely not self-aware BOOMER the humor is. The entire COV is an endless "stream"(harhar) of jokes about "Those kids on those internets be doing crazy things". Gets really old immediately, and sometimes seems to be taken oddly seriously. Like its some serious commentary on parasocial relationships when it has nothing interesting and insightful to say on the matter.. Troy has this line about "any freak can be star on the echonet" and its just like huh? Like it was written by the literal old man telling kids to "get off his damn lawn". Could just be me but that was an aspect of the humour I didnt see talked about as much.
Precisely. Itt should be said that some dlcs in bl2 also failed to hit the mark. I wasn't that impressed with the hammerlock dlc dialogue and story; too simplistic, and they didn't do enough to flesh out hammerlock a bit more, besides just hanging around repairing a boat machine while u kill stuff and saying cliched catch phrases.
I think a perfect example for me of the gulf in difference between bl2 and bl3 is Vaughn. He's one of the most dorkiest characters, almost bland and vanilla, and yet he still is interesting. Whereas bl3 characters may not be vanilla, yet the try-hard dialogue makes them boring instead of interesting. So the blandest characters from bl2 are still more interesting than the most interesting ones from bl3.
@@Christoff070 Even though we call it the Hammerlock DLC, I think it was more to expand the lore than to flesh out Hammerlock. We learn about Nakyama who had to be the scientist behind Timothy and the rest of the doppelgangers. His obsession with Jack actually makes the doppelganger story have more credibility and the fact that we destroyed his samples means, short of Timothy, we should see no further Jack doppelgangers...unless...
I think my issue with BL3 DIALOUGE IS WAY TOO GOD DAMN LONG. Like GOD DAMN. They NEVER SHUT UP! And it's the most unfunny shit ever and it NEVER ENDS.
I feel like the only character who behaved in character is tannis. And I feel that way because tannis is meant to be socially awkward. If you haven't seen it, there is a video somewhere of the original eulogy for Maya. Ava was remorseful and seemed to take some accountability for what happened. And it begs the question of why was this scrapped for a ludicrously inferior sequence that makes Ava out to be the worst character in franchise history?
I loved the game for the gameplay.
But the writers had no idea how to write any character beyond the already socially awkward one and had no idea how to write story in general.
The Joke thing went on way too long so ima summarize the point:
Borderlands 3 is the same joke again, hoping to get the same response as 2012 from the "Joke" as BL2 and TPS, people would like something new but Gearbox cannot stop making the same joke because they have no idea how to make new ones
The rest of the video is stuff everyone has heard before and thought of:
>Ava sucks
>Maya's death is dumb
>The speech for Maya was bad
>Lilith gets her ass beat by twitch streamers basically
>Many jokes don't land
>Majority of dialogue doesn't land
>BL3 has dialogue trying to be BL2
>The story makes about as much sense as a unicorn showing up in your house, telling you when you're going to die and then exploding into 10 million quarters
Some criticism is just get to it, this video is super long for what is something that everyone knows and gets
It's youtube meta game, make a video long enough to get ads about something that's going to guarantee clicks(mostly hating on something)
And instant success,I've seen it enough times that I should have avoided this video
Bl2s humor was very much of the time, why they thought replicating early 2010s humor was a good idea I have no idea
I know
The game pisses me off too. But I can't really say that the devs didn't do enough, y'know. Despite the mold, I 100% don't want Borderlands to die, we deserve Borderlands. And I think Bordlands deserves us, all things considered
3 is neither objectively nor subjectively better than 2. Not sure why anyone would make that claim.
Torgue is my favorite character in the series, he always cracks me up.
I first knew this voice actor for voicing Mr Satan in DBZ. So it just makes it even better for me as I always imagine him being the one saying all this shit.
@@TsarDragon No shit; I never put two and two together. That makes it even more funny.
Feels like BL3 comedy was written by Mindy Khaling
ive got tears in my eyes because thinking about maya. i loved/love her and i thought she would come back, that she isnt dead, because of how the game portrait her death. and i hate it so much.
i had so many memories about her and she just disappears, like she never existed.. thats why i loved kriegs dlc, because i could see her one last time and it wasnt a joke. i cried a lot there too .-.
The joke analogy went on way, waaay too long. Jesus christ.
much like the jokes in the game LMAO GOTTEM XD
i hate myself
Yeah I ended up skipping ahead
Really? I actually really enjoyed how he explained it and it made the pay-off so much better. Do u drink a lot of coffee/red-bull?
I feel like in BL2 there was comedy but most of it comes from specific characters (Mr Torgue, Claptrap, ect.). In BL3 it's like they took the current MCU approach and tried to make everyone the funny character.
Correction - writing team for 3 tried to modernize writing of 2 and failed miserably. If the comedy style stayed the same as well as the entire story, it would've worked perfectly fine, but nooooo, "getting with the times" is definitely what killed 3's writing and this wasn't just seen in BL franchise. Past 3 years killed so many games trying to keep them "with the modern times."
there must of been a civil war between the writers room and the development room, because the game certainly plays like it. I've never had so much fun while wanting to ''Tediore'' myself, in my lifetime
My bad but tannis being tannis isn’t bad
THAT SENTENCE HAD TOO MANY SYLLABLES, APOLOGIZE!!!
I think a perfect example is Denis Leary special Locked n Loaded. The first 2 minute straight are super forced then he goes into be himself sort of, then he just goes in and out of force and truth
The issue is that serious situations a played down because there has to be a joke, where as in bl2 jokes where organically integrated into a serious situation, sort of light jokes but serious at the same time, like when you want to go kill jack, the whole town is wishing you luck and a safe return each in there own funny way, but you can tell they are serious , not just jokeing around. In bl3 when maya die the uology feels patranising and just an excuse to inject some comedy, they could have given her the roland treatment where you have to tell everyone hes dead but they just relagated it to a 30 second joke
Bruh you explained things I've felt about bl3 vs bl2 but couldn't explain. I also couldn't stop watching becuaee you explained it so well, thanks bro
Honestly same. I think the issue with the humor in BL3 is that it tried to "Modernize" the humor. cause they thought it would be LEL EPIC FUNNI which is... Was not at all. I jsut rolled my eyes at a lot of "jokes"
The only time I had fun listening to any dialogue was the Wild West dlc hearing the characters argue with the narrator was so much fun 😂
I remember watching a clip of the Tyreen VA reading some lines and the two guys from Gearbox who were directing or whatever and one turned to the other and said 'that's funny right?' and straight away I saw the problem, when you are asking someone else you work with if it's funny or looking for confirmation that what you just heard was funny then you know very well it's really not funny at all.
I have many problems with bl3 mainly no ultimate vault hunter mode but what pisses me off the most is Lilith taking all the credit for everything we did in bl2
See, Tannis’s poor speech is understandable because she’s been written as someone who doesn’t like interacting with others and prefers to focus on her research.
Lilith 100% should’ve been the one to speak up, this isn’t the first time she’s had a close companion die (Roland died to Jack right in front of her) and this could’ve been an excellent moment to showcase the difference between Lilith from BL2 and Lilith now, but no she remains quiet and lets the brat essentially usurp her entire position when she was to blame for Maya’s death.
The comedy in BL3 was horribly out of date in 90% of its moments, there were some good moments but as they should’ve realized jokes that worked in BL2 are very outdated compared to the time of BL3. I mean show someone a meme from 2012 and no one will really laugh.
BL1 & 2 I can remember several jokes or lines even now despite me not playing it in years, BL3 I remember nothing because the writing wasn’t compelling anywhere.
Good video.
I’d disagree that BL2 humor is simply outdated. The humor is not reliant on the year the game was released. It’s more reliant on the situational context of the borderlands universe. The wackiness and over the top nature of it. The BL2 dialogue still cracks me up. That one line from Handsome Jack about the guy who charged him with a spoon gets me every time. I agree with the rest of your post though.
Nonsense play the damn game
I get that Is her character, the problem i had was the fact that the devs made the choice to have her speak KNOWING that she isnt great at speeches, if they wanted a full hearted moment yes lilith should have spoken up, even Zer0 speaking would have given some credit to how much they have been through together story wise. it seemed lack luster and almost disrespectful to not only have everyone there not saying anything, but that the one person who did speak is known for comically being an awkward person in serious situations.
The Pre Sequel was great I why so many people dislike it.
boredlands failed us in comedy
dialogue
characters
reasons to play the game and shoot bandits
writing
rewards
logic
and interesting playable characters
I just felt that BL3 was more about 4th wall breaks about it's similarities with current culture like gaming "farewell KDR" and the whole gimmic of the twins being streamers. It was very in your face where as BL2 was alot more subtle, and didn't reference tons of things in real life through its story.
This is just a snippet of what I think. It's been a while since I've played either games, but after years - this is what the lasting impression was from BL3 compared to BL2.
The entire story & dialogue from BL3 is the the only reason why I've only done ONE normal mode playthrough and then never touched it again. Mind you, I was such a fan of the series that I had BL2 on PC, XBOX 360, PS3 and PS4 and I've played through the game on all these platforms well over 50 times start to finish.
dont forget that some random dude in bl3 said deez nuts i am not making this shit up
Sometimes I think there never could have been a good sequel to borderlands 2. What could it have been that would’ve satisfied everyone. it was too much time in between the games. I guess I’m glad borderlands 3 exist and I’m kinda hoping for a borderlands 4 which they bring back everything they learned from 3.
Borderlands 3 dialogue, story, writing, execution honestly makes me question who green lighted them, who said yes this should be included in our extremely high rated triple AAA title, could they not have spent some of there Budget to get some more reviewers before they started the project.
Tps is definitely not a spin off, it’s a main part of the franchise just has less content due to lack of funding
I wouldn't say bl3 is cringe comedy. Watamote is cringe comedy. bl3 is just cringe.
All the comments criticizing the writing in this video that is criticizing the writing of a video game...this video didn't cost you $60 to play it and the guy who made it did so because it was something he was passionate about and wasn't forced to do it by a company who clearly doesn't give a shit about artistic integrity.
So he made a clunky analogy. So what? You aren't entitled to demand perfection from a product you paid nothing for and aren't being forced to interact with. Give this guy a break.
It's a fair criticism tho...
Criticism isn't invalid just because something is free.
Its because the gaming industry has mostly become woke and politicized, and the amazing humor from Anthony and crew is too much for their sensitivities. They should rehire Anthony!
I always turn the dialogue off
Wait... did he make a pun or did he really think lovecraftian meant love story???????
If someone rewrites the dialogue and uses AI to get the the characters to say the new lines instead, I would support it.
now thats a mod i can definitely get behind!
1 minute in and I hear "no gray bu quiy a lo be ah"
My man's is using a 19 letter alphabet
Yeeehaw, lemme tell-u wjat, dees jowkes werr not greayt but damn i swear to sweet baby jessusss dey do be very darn bett-durr yessir
Bl3 as it is now is the best game in the series, tons of viable builds at mayhem 11, raid bosses with mechanics, the takedowns, the vault hunters and ofc the smooth gameplay and loot
Now the story is trash and that is a fact but i do not care😂 you dont even have to play it 3 times to reach endgame like in bl2 and you can skip all the cutscenes now, i hope we could also skip all of the in game dialogue but oh well.
The dlcs stories are decent tho.
This is a big hot take right here but....I don't really like the gameplay of 3 as much as other people. Like most reviews are like "the gameplay is a lot better than 2" or "if they just remade 2 with this gameplay we would have the perfect game" but I disagree. The gameplay feels floaty and everything looks shiny and slippery. I know I'm in the minority but thats my hottake. The DLC stuff is amazing tbf though and the story goes hard on mute
I bet LFX has Loot, Pecks, and Explosions for being based.
I definitely have one of those things and it begins with the letter Explosions
I believe the writer for Borderlands 2 wasn't involved for Borderlands 3. That's why the writing for BL3 feels like it's trying so hard to copy the previous games but not understanding why they were so revered by fand
Pretty sure he was straight up fired
@@deathstreak1156 was he?! Source?
@@BrokenToy ok appramtly in 2015 he left gearbox, bl3 was done by the writer of bl1
replaying the game now and my take. I love the gun play and skill trees. As for the story it's terrible. The story should have been the war hinted at in BL2. The humor was written by a 5 year old (the whole toilet mission ugh) and the writers had to go woke (flak is they/them, dlc about a gay wedding, Ariel and Amara are bi etc.... do we really need this in video games ?
I've played every single one of these games on mute. Nothing engaging or funny in the writing of any of them. Pretty fun gameplay though.
Gg
BL3 tried and horribly failed at selling 2018 Zoomer humour to people that were most likely in majority over the age of 17. People born in 2016 were their target I guess. I couldn't they ssee that coming? It's like trying to tell scientific facts to a group of boomers; 4/5 is going to dislike it.
They comited the cardinal sin of commedy, missing the timing of the jokes. The dialogue goes for to long, trys to hard to be funny and lacks personality. Add to it political correctness, idiot plot, and outdated references and there isen't much worth saving.
Speaking of stories with bad dialogue and flow, this video man, terrible. Get to the point. You wasted 4 minutes just coming up with a bad analogy for the borderlands games just to ramble for 16 more minutes. Also tps and wl are part of the franchise.
I Really Wanted to have a more professional thought out Way of explaining media and how it works in a simplified way, if you disagree with that that's fine and i appreciate the criticism. the only reason i didn't use any other games other than 1 2 and 3 (apart from a quick mention of TPS) was due to me wanting to only cover mainline games with the numbers and not spinoff games, only for fluidity.
Borderlands 2 relies on outdated memes for humour it's trash ! We don't really play these games for this anyway.
Still has more soul to it than borderlands 3
I really don't know if you meant to put a 3 instead of a 2
It seems you made a mistake in your comment. You put "Borderlands 2" but we are all sure you meant to put "Borderlands 3"
@@daedrademonlord8941 I mean, he edited the comment and it’s still a 2, I think he’s serious.
This, why are we pretending as if BL2 humor was anything special?
I liked 3, wasn't great but the gameplay was outstanding and all the content. This guy making fun of content and this video was horrible content, took waaaaay to long to get to a point. How can you criticize someone's content when yours about it sux. I was ready to click off after a minute but read comments. Back to 3...I really enjoyed the game play the story was so-so nothing that had ypu interested like handsome Jack. They did everything right in my opinion but could have done a little better on the story to make you more in to it. Only thing I hated was losing Maya. I know 4 will be great, hope something like a pre sequel before 4.
