    My buddy and I had a miserable trip. As he was fixing a flat tire in the middle of nowhere in brutal heat, he was whistling away, happy as could be. "Dude. Why are you so f'n happy??!!"
    "Because we have a story."

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  Рік тому +2

      Haha yes! That happened to us while coming home from Anza Borrego Rabbit Peak last year. Flat tire in middle of the desert, stranded for a few days in Borrego Springs while we had to wait for new tires to come in. At first we were freaking out, but then we could not stop laughing at how ridiculous the situation was, and it actually turned out to be a really fun adventure and great memory once we shifted our mindset!

    Understand on being bummed. Several weeks ago we drove from Alabama to Steamboat Springs Colorado to ski for 2 weeks. Well, day 2 I (Kelley) hurt my knee and had to be carried down the mountain. They thought I had torn my ACL. I was going to be positive and not let it get me down. Went to orthopedic out there a few days later. Ended up only being a sprain. I couldn't ski but ended up going snowshoeing for the first time, snowmobiling, tubing and horseback riding in the snow. I had to make the most of my time.

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  Рік тому +2

      Kelley that's so sad about the sprain, but freaking awesome that you crushed it in all those other ways, and especially snowshoeing which we're really huge fans of because it gets you to the most amazing places all alone -- love it!!

      Steve that's a very good point, and we actually should have said that it could be a nice little family hike -- it's just very short and easy, so kind of foiled our idea of having an adventure. But you're quite right that it is a cool natural feature, and I wish we'd emphasized that the disappointment was relative to our own adventure taste but not that it's a bad place or anything. ❤️

    Hahaha you went to the Slot in Anza-Borrego. It's still pretty cool! - but if you had driven 2.5 hours to it, I see why the bummer. It's like going to the best steakhouse, ordering a steak, being told they are all all out of, and being asked if you'd like an employee's half-eaten Big Mac in the fridge he didn't finish for lunch.

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  9 місяців тому +1

      Haha that's a good analogy. Big Macs are good in their own way, but not when you're expecting a tomahawk ribeye. We probably should have stressed that it is a good hike for, say, families with small kids, but it's just not any kind of adventure hike which is what we were hoping for. Love your videos. The few clips you showed of this episode looked cool to me and would have liked to see more of what you did. Wind? That makes an interesting video, like your one on Mt. Shasta. It looked like a neat slot canyon to me, not just a ditch. I think you could have made a totally normal video from it and would have been entertaining. I think your viewers know that not every place is super technical or scenic or a 10/10 of every category like France. Also, while the desert is normal and plain to you, its still probably interesting to those who don't live there. Also, consider featuring wildlife or anything else unusual you see along the way. That's my 2 cents. Keep it up!

      Haha it is that slot canyon, Melissa! But we probably should have added that there's nothing wrong with the canyon per se -- it's just not...adventurous. Think of it like a nice short little family hike to see a cool natural feature and you won't be disappointed. But if you want some more adventurous and exciting slot canyons, check out the rope/ladder/painted canyon area outside Palm Springs. We have a video on that one, and it's def more exciting! ❤️

    Since both of you are familiar with classical music, Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, 4th movement will pump you up with hope when you are in despair. On my last day in Japan, I went to the Tokyo National Museum to check it out before departure. Little did I know the museum is always closed on Monday (now you know : D ). I thought I would be back to Japan in no time but the pandemic changed everything. Bottom line- there are things you cannot control in life. I assume you went to The Slot, which is a great hike with kids and is pretty neat, but is also about a mile long over flat terrain. (And the brief clips you showed make it look like it's been softened a bunch and made less dramatic by mudflow recently.) Not really an adventure worth driving 5 hours in the rain for :( I've had my own hiking bummer lately. I've been dealing (not well) with a breakup and ended up on an unexpectedly really hard off-trail hike that I wasn't emotionally prepared for. Spent a couple of steep, brush-filled miles just wanting it to be over and my only joy was when we finally bushwhacked our way back to the cars. So I'm taking a break from hiking for awhile to concentrate on other things, particularly ones that involve lots of social interaction. (Ultimate frisbee ftw!). Sounds like you guys were really able to use the negative energy of your hiking day constructively, which is awesome. I'm not sure I'm ready to follow along with the FIRE stuff yet, but it's awesome that you guys are able to bring your positive energy into sharing that part of your life too!

YT-ers who quit their FT jobs are taking chances they will remain popular when history has shown popularity wanes. but if all you need is 100,000 regular viewers and pump out 150 videos a year then you can make 100,000 per year with no endorsement income. but it's a lot of work.

So far, we're not counting on making much money from either of our channels, but all the early retirees we've consulted say it's very important to have a passion to retire to, and adventuring and making videos are definitely our passion. The idea when we retire will be not to ever need to make another dollar, so any money from YT would just go back into having bigger and better adventures! ❤️

    Be careful on retirement. After 3-4 years, you really notice inflation biting into your monthly income.

      You're sure right about that, Allan. In fact, it's one of the first videos we have planned on R2-- how and why we'll be hedging against inflation risk in early retirement! ❤️

    My two cents on early retirement. Usually people do it if they are financially set.
    From you guys presented before, looks like you can make it if A, B, C will fall into place. Which can happen, and I hope it does.
    However the world, especially now is full of economical and financial instabilities. So what might work this year, might now work next year. Look how mortgage rates went x 3 within a single year.
    Also when you travel there is a novelty to the experience, like eating out in restaurants every week.
    However, if this becomes a life style, it sort of loses that appeal, and if you restricted yourself financially, it is hard to do a U-Turn and do something else.
    Anyways I will sub follow you guys, and wish you the best.

      Thanks very much -- this is exactly the kind of discussion we're hoping to have on R2! Your points are all good ones, and we may use a couple of them as seeds for some future R2 videos where we address the concern and talk about how we're overcoming it (or trying to!) ❤️

      Wow thank you so much! Congrats on your super early semi-retirement, and yes we will definitely have some questions as we get R2 up and rolling. We're currently putting together a brainstorm list of topics that we want to cover, but would love to hear what lessons have been most valuable for you because that will probably give us some ideas we haven't thought of. ❤️
