Rescuing a baby flying-fox; this is Strawberry Daiquiri

- Baby season has struck with a vengeance; 11 babies came into care in Sydney on the day I rescued little Daiquiri.
Strawberry Daiquiri is a 2 week old Grey-Headed Flying-Fox pup, who was found on her dead mother on the side of the road by some builders. I don't know if the mum was electrocuted but she had no evidence of burns on her, neither does her baby. Often, if the baby has suffered an electric shock whilst on mumbat, they have a sore mouth (if they were suckling), or burns on their extremities: wingtips or thumbs or toes, anywhere which might have been in contact with mumbat's skin and not insulated by mum's fur.
The usual pattern is that the baby looks fine, until rehydration kicks in, when the blisters or swellings start to appear. (if you've ever been badly sunburned, you will know that you're mostly fine until the evening then the red skin and blisters come up).
Our Daiquiri is a bit of an independent girlie; she likes to get out of her wraps and doesn't soil the teddy she's on, only the ones outside her wraps. She started off feeding really well, but then she got overconfident, and guzzled, then snorted the milk out her nose which set up a pattern of uncoordinated sucking and swallowing; I feed her first and last so she only has short bursts of feeding and doesn't get tired.
Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for me. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).

Sad Mama Batty passed but relieved her little one is in best hands.

Their little chirps are so heart wrenching when they’ve lost their mum. Like their whole world has crashed. I hope we get to see more of her when she goes to another career. Blessing little one! Grow up strong! ❤

She was a brave little confused Strawberry Daiquiri, and quite the talker. It is always sad when the Mums die with them so young🌹but she looks like finding her way around a strange new world with you and Maggie. 11 on the same day sounds like a complicated baby season, especially with carers in short supply. Poor little Strawberry...losing her mum was so bad, but thanks to the persons who looked out for this little batty, who found her and to Meg who gives such great care for her and all those precious creatures in need🥰🦇😍❤❤❤
Such a vocabulary for her age! Poor little mite, she's had a bad, bad, bad very terrible day and she knows it. I am intensely jealous of whichever carer will get to raise her. 🥰

Little known fact, the Humane Society from which we adopted "Plum thee Bunny" had originally named her "Strawberry." Rose renamed her "Plum" and I added "thee Bunny" when Rose moved away. "Caye da' other Bunny" was named "Daffodil". Again, Rose came up with Cayenne, shortened to Caye, and I added "da' other Bunny".
You clearly have a naming superpower as well; the little ones need a name and a surname or descriptor; it's only right that you give them the best name you can.
FYI when I was a child, I had a doll called Kayda. I think there was a brand name on the back of her and that was the source of the name,

Awww, what a sweet little girl she is! Her chirps reminded me of an injured bat in my house years and years and years ago. Our tiny bats in Indiana use echo location so you don't usually hear them. But the injured one was audibly chirping like Strawberry Daiquiri. Bless the MOPs for thinking to cover Mum and protect the baby. We get to see Maggie soon? Yay!
Its almost Halloween and the whole bats ideal has a whole new much cooler posture. Very interesting to watch a professional turn these maligned animals into happy well adjusted batties.

Possibly a silly question, but is it not as common to see girl bats? When you discovered she was a little girl you sounded surprised.
Also, the last video I watched you said “of course it’s a boy” making me wonder if boy bats are more common?
I don't remember why I said that - he was probably a total grot, and of course it would have to be a boy who was more grotty.
It's about 50/50 but often we have more boys at the beginning of the season which apparently reflects the temperature 6 months previously during mating season; the hotter the beginning of autumn, the more likely the early babies will be boys. Don't ask my why, but maybe it's to do with the "swimmers" getting too hot.
What I think the mommy 🦇 is dead and her tiny baby girl will be safe and sound it will get some medicine and make them sleep so cute and adorable baby 🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇
