Longevity recommendations @ 52:23 (my question submitted online): 1. Fasts to purge pre-cancerous cells (you don't want uncontrolled growth). Experience ketosis or fasting for semi-extended periods of time (2-3+ days). Tim does one three-day fast per month (only water). Also, hyperbaric oxygen (2.5 atm for 60-90 minutes 3x/week). You can also take exogenous ketones (e.g. mixing a powder and drinking it) 2. Metformin - the medication that has the most support for prophylactic life extension 3. Don't drive a car :) Next (@55:28): How to combat insomnia (I was also in the audience): 0. Throw all the variables at the experiment, and if you get the desired effect, start removing variables once you have a winning combination. 1. Replace coffee with tea. There are coffee pills. Decrease your caffeine intake. Eliminate caffeine consumption past 5pm [NB: you may be a slow caffeine metabolizer - check your 23andme] 2. Some type of meditation in the morning, e.g. 10-20 minutes using an app like Headspace. This fixes the "monkey mind" cause of insomnia. 3. Reading fiction before bed, to take you from a problem-solving mode to a story-consuming mode. 4. Use f.lux or the like on your screens 5. Microdose with psychedelics, at sub-hallucinogenic levels. Psilocybin worked for some.

"There's not enough productive suffering in the U.S." is a line that may be true but it contributes to a narrative that people don't work hard enough. I would add to that that "There is too much unproductive suffering in the U.S.".

i do a similar thing to not be embarrassed. being a guy a looked down on or seen as weird thing to do by many people is painting your nails. so from time to time i will go out and get my nails done. at first id go with very passive things like dark blue and feel weird about it, but after i few times of doing it and being used to it id go get crazy things like sparkly gold and silver accents and not care. doing stuff like that helped me a lot with being comfortable with myself and not caring how others perceive me do to such small things.
I appreciate tim ferriss for all he has done, But i have questions: I want to know tim’s mind set before he came into wealth! time said he used to work days on end and take nootropic supplements to try and stay focused! I think these videos are helpful is certain levels of life. but one should work hard while young to get their business off the ground, then watch these videos to maintain a a level head so you don’t fall victim to ones own shortfalls..

People who think there is no rite of passage have never been poor. Having a small apartment and being college student broke is not what I’m talking about. That’s just a taste. Suffering is overrated. And I love how he’s downing willpower and jumping off a mountain and is still like “ I love you tony”. Basically what he told everyone is get the skills of an administrative assistant and your life will improve. Also, become a contract worker who self analyzes, so no need for hr too. Starve every now and again, so you can know what it is to be deprived. I mean, I guess. Im going go have breakfast now , Tim. As a person who has oved in poverty his entire life, I have to say that this is not going to get the full effect. For me the hardest part has been the years of psycological stress and never ever being completely nurished. My brain does not work like it should without the food that it needs. this has not been a fast, it has been a life. I like his efforts but I will suggest he get together with a group or a few groups of people who have actually been in poverty for very long periods, create a think tank with them. Yes good try but needs improvement. Mainly the psycological aspect, I feel it is the most difficult part of poverty. The stigma, no safety net, hopelessness.
I like your vids, I plan to watch many of them .. and, of course, I find them useful, lecturing ... but the concept of the monkey mind is a pretty old Buddhist concept concerning meditation
Wearing cheap clothes and not eating much isn't practicing poverty. If that's all poverty was then yeah the worst case scenario wouldn't be that bad. Problem is, that's not what poverty is. Poverty is the chronic stress of having bills to pay but not being able to pay them. Poverty is having children to feed but struggling with the stress and guilt of not being able to afford to properly feed them. I like this guy, but sometimes he can be a bit over-simplistic.
In my experience, poor people are usually people who are not smart enough. Don't get me wrong. People can be poor but if they remain consistently poor at around 50 they are not smart enough. Now Tim is obviously smart and it is tough to replicate stupidity. I completely agree with you though that poverty can't be replicated by wearing cheap clothes and not eating.
That's obviously not true. You're getting it backwards. People are often not smart enough because they were born poor. The individuals who are born poor, yet still manage to end up bright are the exception. You don't seem to be taking into consideration the uphill struggle that an individual born into a broke household in a deprived area faces. Most of these individuals by the time they are teenagers have developed behavioral problems due to the crime around them and feel alienated from wider society.You don't get to be smart without learning and poor children often don't get proper educations. Essentially, if you see a poor person it's more accurate to think "this person is probably not very bright because this person grew up broke" than to think "this person is broke because they are not very bright". Of course, there is then the exception of broke people who are incredibly intelligent but have been held back in life for other reasons. Again, likely behavioral/mental health problems.
+Smoking Horsey Yep. Imo being bright is being able to learn from experiences, which doesn't require any education. It's just that the only experience someone in poverty knows is to be in poverty. I would guess that if Einstein was constantly struggling to find his next meal he wouldn't have had much time for expanding his horizons.

There's nothing that says intelligence stops you from taking heroin. In fact, the evidence seems to suggest more intelligent people are more likely to take drugs

"Practicing poverty" HAH! It's VERY psychologically different when you know it's a temporary condition versus a seemingly inescapable nightmare trap that you wake up to every day with cumulative negative effects. He needs to reconsider that little exercise
yes most certainly. he should try working 3 shitty jobs at the same time with bosses screaming at him and being forced to share an apartment with a person he doesnt like, for years. then he will begin to maybe come close to it. or even better be homeless for a while, be forced to rummage around in garbage bins for something to eat.
Poverty is being trapped. Constant terror of never being able to escape struggling to get things needed to live and not being able to do it. Having your health deteriorate because you simply can't afford food, heat, much less a dentist. Poverty is realizing your dreams died and hoping for regular food is too much to believe will happen. Poverty is constant exhaustion because of living in terror & unhealthy conditions.
It’s supposed to be psychologically different......he says PRACTICE. Meaning he’s after a short term reminder in order for him to simply take a prism view. It’s supposed to be done without negative effects. If he wanted to actually experience poverty that’s pretty easy to do. I’m guessing that’s not his intention
ErenceTT I mean, if you mean educated in the traditional sense, the guy went to Princeton and is at least analytic and creative enough to publish two bestsellers. I do not see how being "well informed" is a negative characteristic. He refers to himself as a "dilettante" sometimes, which could be positive or negative depending on how you look at it. That's because they're PERSONAL VIEWS of his and he doesn't expect everyone to agree (like the bootcamp idea). What does Tim do in those 3 day fasts? I can't imagine being able to be productive or social at those times.
This is a good question to pose to him. He has mentioned the low activity ....last 2 days being weekends. While fasting...ur mind is quite alert. You try this for a day snd see how it helps

As a person who has oved in poverty his entire life, I have to say that this is not going to get the full effect. For me the hardest part has been the years of psycological stress and never ever being completely nurished. My brain does not work like it should without the food that it needs. this has not been a fast, it has been a life. I like his efforts but I will suggest he get together with a group or a few groups of people who have actually been in poverty for very long periods, create a think tank with them. Yes good try but needs improvement. Mainly the psycological aspect, I feel it is the most difficult part of poverty. The stigma, no safety net, hopelessness.

Wearing cheap clothes and not eating much isn't practicing poverty. If that's all poverty was then yeah the worst case scenario wouldn't be that bad. Problem is, that's not what poverty is. Poverty is the chronic stress of having bills to pay but not being able to pay them. Poverty is having children to feed but struggling with the stress and guilt of not being able to afford to properly feed them. I like this guy, but sometimes he can be a bit over-simplistic.

In my experience, poor people are usually people who are not smart enough. Don't get me wrong. People can be poor but if they remain consistently poor at around 50 they are not smart enough. Now Tim is obviously smart and it is tough to replicate stupidity. I completely agree with you though that poverty can't be replicated by wearing cheap clothes and not eating.
That's obviously not true. You're getting it backwards. People are often not smart enough because they were born poor. The individuals who are born poor, yet still manage to end up bright are the exception. You don't seem to be taking into consideration the uphill struggle that an individual born into a broke household in a deprived area faces. Most of these individuals by the time they are teenagers have developed behavioral problems due to the crime around them and feel alienated from wider society.You don't get to be smart without learning and poor children often don't get proper educations.
Essentially, if you see a poor person it's more accurate to think "this person is probably not very bright because this person grew up broke" than to think "this person is broke because they are not very bright". Of course, there is then the exception of broke people who are incredibly intelligent but have been held back in life for other reasons. Again, likely behavioral/mental health problems.
+Smoking Horsey Yep. Imo being bright is being able to learn from experiences, which doesn't require any education. It's just that the only experience someone in poverty knows is to be in poverty.
I would guess that if Einstein was constantly struggling to find his next meal he wouldn't have had much time for expanding his horizons.
mookamoka3 Intelligence allows you to adapt to your situation better than others. A very intelligent heroin addict may simply be better at scoring heroin than other addicts. There's nothing that says intelligence stops you from taking heroin. In fact, the evidence seems to suggest more intelligent people are more likely to take drugs

"Practicing poverty" HAH! It's VERY psychologically different when you know it's a temporary condition versus a seemingly inescapable nightmare trap that you wake up to every day with cumulative negative effects. He needs to reconsider that little exercise
yes most certainly. he should try working 3 shitty jobs at the same time with bosses screaming at him and being forced to share an apartment with a person he doesnt like, for years. then he will begin to maybe come close to it. or even better be homeless for a while, be forced to rummage around in garbage bins for something to eat.
Poverty is being trapped. Constant terror of never being able to escape struggling to get things needed to live and not being able to do it. Having your health deteriorate because you simply can't afford food, heat, much less a dentist. Poverty is realizing your dreams died and hoping for regular food is too much to believe will happen. Poverty is constant exhaustion because of living in terror & unhealthy conditions.
He has a different target audience. What he says isn't universal.
It’s supposed to be psychologically different......he says PRACTICE. Meaning he’s after a short term reminder in order for him to simply take a prism view. It’s supposed to be done without negative effects. If he wanted to actually experience poverty that’s pretty easy to do. I’m guessing that’s not his intention

ErenceTT I mean, if you mean educated in the traditional sense, the guy went to Princeton and is at least analytic and creative enough to publish two bestsellers. I do not see how being "well informed" is a negative characteristic. He refers to himself as a "dilettante" sometimes, which could be positive or negative depending on how you look at it. I realize I sound like a Tim Ferris fanatic, though I disagree with some of his views as well. That's because they're PERSONAL VIEWS of his and he doesn't expect everyone to agree (like the bootcamp idea). I just think he gets a lot of unnecessary flak because of his seemingly cocky demeanor, which he has mentioned before in his podcast.
Fasting with a large amount on your bank account is *not* practising poverty. The mindset is totally different. Just saying.
