Anybody from the 80's Ologapo remember "The Green Apple" on Magsaysay...it had the long tunnel entrance from the street to the club? It was on the right hand side when leaving the base. My first taste of mojo in there in 1981 at 18 years old !!! Then first drunk, then first time to sleep in a bar bathroom folowed by first barfine !!! hahahah. I sure was a mess for a young deck ape !!
Olongapo City has changed a lot. I was stationed at SRF Subic Bay from November 20, 1978 to March 30, 1981. My tour of duty there was way too short for me. That was the very best tour of duty I had when I was in the Navy. My late wife of 31 years & I met there On January 16, 1975, I was 21 then, already had two Med Cruises and two Carribean Cruises on my overseas cruises that I made, it was my very first Westpac when I was stationed aboard the USS Blue Ridge LCC-19 which was homeported in San Diego at the time. Four months after I got stationed at SRF Subic Bay, my late wife & I got married at Olongapo City Hall by Judge Jose L. Uy on April 5, 1979, we had three children during our marriage, our only daughter was born at he hospital at Cubi Point on November 3,1980. My daughter passed away on July 17, 2004 in Dardago, Italy, she was an Air Farce dependent wife, left behind a son. My late wife passed away on March 6, 2010 in Loser City Tucson, Mexizona. My ultimate goal is to be living back in the Philippines for good by October of 2017, Olongapo City is one of my four choice of where I want to live out my life. I left my heart in the Philippines.
How things change. I was station dito from 1980-1982 at Cubi Point and lived in mabayuhan on Otero ave. Hung out and Sam's almost everyday playing bones or hung out at Mariposa.
this brings back memories...i was Temporary Duty there for 90 days....and also our ship the USS Parsons DDG-33 a task force of USS MIdway would occassionally pull in Subic every 4 months...we were stationed in Yokosaka Japan back in 1977 to 1978...i have never so much fun in one place....
I was there last in 1986 Hung out at a small side walk type place called the Malagaya Store ( Amtrack Bar) I think it was located directly at the last place you are filming at. The blue little place looks like a small bake shop.
THAT was a wild place in 1968/ 69 I could tell you some sea story's. I was on the USS Arlington agmr2 Damage Control 3ed class yep left my true love there, she use to sell hot dogs from her street cart, Band in every Bar, you x sailors know the drill. Never went to the jungle, but did go to the east inn club, need I say more !!!
JUNGLE Avenue ? Did they officially name a street/avenue Jungle Ave. ? Back in the late 60's-70's, all of Rizal avenue was known as "The Jungle" this area of Olongapo catered to Blacks & Latinos.. Magsaysay aka The Main Drag was mostly white sailors & marines. As you walked down Magsaysay about midway, turn left onto Mariposa & walk down until you reached Rizal ave. AKA The Jungle... 40 years ago !!! Damn time has passed me by... I hope to someday return with my brother JJ. We had brother duty.
Olongapo City was my regular port visit when I was in the Navy 1978 to 1998. I wrote a song about: Sailor's Den (Paradise City) by Pilot Haus on youtube. Please check it out.
Hell Yeah, I remember Rock Trax - in 1985 I used to barfine/date a girl in there who had a huge dragon tattoo half-way around her body, she was soooo hot and a helluva go-go dancer. If you were there in this timeframe you know exactly who she is.
I still have my "Sierra Club - Electric Walls of Sound" T-shirt from the 80s where I spent a lot of peso on Mojo, cheap weed and BARFINES !!! (oh yeah - and the famous BBQ pork stix !!)
I went down to Sams soulfood nearly every night If yall didn't know it..."soulfood" is really just southern cooking and anywhere it is, that's for me and I'm for it. I never had a problem despite being thoroughly white and prone to talking shit just because people thought I wouldn't.Maybe I was just lucky but maybe, just maybe...how a man carries himself counts.
I was there on and off from 1975 in the Jolo bar having a beer at 18 .... wow ... the City jumped. My last time there was like 1982 .... I was there when they had curfew at midnight. Everyone had to be off the street, Talk about wild ...... How is Subic ???? that place was the Wild Wild West ........ you could do anything out there. I do miss it .... To nad the Navy gave back the base I might have moved there ... lol
Club 168 and mariposa. got arrested there back in 1983 for being 17 days awol. back then that was nothing and got a slap on the wrist. Most of the good bars are in Barreo Barreto about 10 minutes jeepney ride from magsaysay.
When I was there the Jungle was for brothers ...... not to many white guys went off down them streets talking shit .... lol ..... when I first got there they had old destroyers there that we lent to Vietnam to use. I worked on one busting rust with a needle gun at receiving station waiting for my ship to come in. I flew into Clark and waited in subic for my ship. Drinking beer and watching them crazy movies on the wall at 1 pm on a Saturday with a LBFM right next to you.
That's what I've heard, I was there in both 1985 and 1988, and had a great tine both times, my favorite club was one probably about a block after you got off the base, on the right hand side I believe one of the names it went under was "Trax", (1988) but it was called something else in 1985
i went there in 1990 Aus Navy..... was wow went back in 2010 and well remember the gates, to the base first right leaving and the casino on the right down main drag ... rest been pulled down street also allot better... sighs memories
I use to date a young Filipino female that worked in Sam's Soulfood Shack named Anna Christine she was the bomb back in 1984 I was stationed in Guam. Onboard the USS San Jose AFS 7 then transferred to the USS Alamo LSD 33 and again to the USS Wichita AOR 1. In all I visited Olongapo City in Subic Bay about 12 time with the longest being 30 days. Can someone get me a RED HORSE BEER!!
Whatever happened to Sam?, owner of Sams soul-food. I was serving aboard the USS Schenectady on West-Pac '86-'87. Wow, talk about opening a young Ohio boys eyes! I am glad however to see the people pulling their city up by the bootstraps so to speak. Everyone has a right to progress and forward mobility....Good job
@The657scraper I was an EO2 with "Jive 5" Did you ever get a chance to look through the Alfa Co. "beep book" while you were there? Wonder who finally made off with it?
Comanche Warrior hell yeah I’m half Puerto Rican had a blast there in the 80’s in fact went back to visit the country 20 years later met a great girl from Bohol make a long story short been married now for 12 yrs
I hear you it is how you carry yourself that matters. What years were you there ?? and what were you on ?? ... I was there first time on the Oriskany CV-34 and then twice on the Long Beach CGN-9 and twice on the Belleau Wood LHA-3 all from 75 to 84. I was over there alot in those ten years. I was real tight with alot of people over there. I think they lost alot of money by being greddy. If they wanted us out they should have just said so and stopped jacking up the rent like they did.
Are you retired from the Navy?? You sure was over in the P.I. during the "good years" I heard that base and town outside of it was popping ................
