Dialing in the right EQ settings doesn't have to be complicated or hard, especially when you're mixing your guitar tracks.
In this simple tutorial, I share 3 simple EQ settings that I rely on to clean up heavy guitar tracks.
The best part is that all you need is the stock EQ plugin in your DAW to get the job done.

About 25 years ago, I was playing in a post punk band and we got to record in one of the best studios in our country at the time, with all analogue equipment.
As I was curious for the whole process, I started asking questions and the recording engineer was kind enough to educate me on the basics, which were pretty much what you described in this video!
Get your sources right, trim unneeded frequencies from all instruments to free up space in low and hi frequencies and use no to minimal effects when recording- you can add effects in the mix, but never subtract!

still rocking the X50 in the world of Archetypes is such a big man move, considering that guitar players also have some sort of FOMO when it comes to gear.

I've started utilizing this approach since I've been watching your channel. My guitar game is far from perfect, but it is light-years from where it was before your wisdom was bestowed upon me.

Hey Bobby, brand new subscriber here… Looking forward to checking out the training you just mentioned. I’ve been solely recording my guitar ideas using either my Splawn 100w head or my ENGL Ironball (Not the SE version) through a Two Notes Captor X (just using the attenuation capability for now) and mic’ing the various cabs I own all while simultaneously stumbling my way around Cubase 12 for the better part of 2 years. As a husband and a father of 2 little ones, trying to create space to record is next to impossible so I’m often burning the candle at both ends late at night and then waking up super early for work. That all said, this has been an awesome ride so far but as of about 6 months or so ago I’ve been completely stuck. I’ll simply double track a guitar riff or idea (hard panned L & R) while tailoring Slate SSD 5 drums the best I can and running my 4 string direct into Scarlett 18i8 using a virtual bass amp. I continue to run into the same problems with my guitars, somewhere between 2K-4K I’ve been consistently removing a handful of nasty harsh frequencies which obviously leaves me in a horrible spot once they’re removed. I’ve tried soooo many different mic placement ideas and moved my cabs all over my downstairs music area and have even completely covered the damn cabs with blankets (looked like hobo’s were sleeping in a damn tent downstairs) All with the hopes that what I constantly have to notch out in post production are room reflections but nope lol So until the other night I was using either a pair of SM57’s (Fredman technique) or a 57 and a Sennheiser e609 together but now I’m back to a single old school EV N/D Series dynamic mic that seems to be getting me much better results since it’s a bit darker in nature. I’m hoping to get some ideas from your training about how you EQ your head “In the room” prior to recording since that’s the tone I ultimately need to absolutely start with. I’ve tried removing presence and or mids on my amp heads and sure that’s helped a bit but I can still hear some horrible nastiness that lives around 2K-4K that I can’t seem to simply slightly notch out and move on. Ugh, so freaking annoying. Sorry for being long winded if you’re reading this, or whoever actually reads this for that matter. Thanks again for providing solid tips along my personal journey, you’ve helped me out quite a bit.
    Nick

Hey Bobby! Would you care to possibly do a short video going over levels/loudness before submitting to streaming services? There’s not too many vids out there from a metal perspective and pretty much everyone has a different opinion.. would love to hear your thoughts on it!

I use the first one standard. Never realised the second one and will pay more attention to the third one. For me, as a drummer and young producer (although I'm old) it's tough for me to recognise good guitar tones, and especially good guitar tones that sit well in a mix. Maybe something to talk about? (Or did I miss that video?)

The IR comparison is indeed dramatic. But the 'downloaded IR' was pushed into clipping, whereas the 'Frightbox IR' was not. Did that contribute at all to the muddiness of one and the improvement with the other?

I've gotten so frustrated with trying to get a good guitar tone I've told my band that I can't produce what we want and we should hit a studio instead....I am beyond frustrated because I feel your creative juices don't flow properly when you're under a money time crunch.

Probably too much processing. These tips in this video are for mixing and making tracks sit in a mix, not really helpful for creating a singular guitar tone.

idk why but everytime i try to use some ir that someone else uses, it sounds so different than how it sounds in the video. And its not cuz of the amp cuz i also used the exact same amp and settings

Hard filter cuts are nor the best solution... It sounds mostly better to use shelve EQs.

What is that EQ plug-in on 1:44? I am asking because the one on logic pro confuses me.

    • @frostmusicofficial
      @frostmusicofficial 2 місяці тому

That is the stock EQ in Pro Tools. You should learn the basic controls of an EQ if the one in Logic is confusing lol.

If I have octaves and rhythm playing at the same time on a chorus and a lead also goes in on the chorus I will EQ the lead guitar all the way up to 250-350 HZ. People are so scared to EQ things but at the end of the day if it’s working in a mix that’s all that matters
