What do you think of this one?! Quick tutorial of catching halibut in San Diego. Hope you enjoy . Happy holidays everyone :)
@Steven Templeman ooo! Fishing on the beaches: Use a lucky craft sardine or any color white would do well . Long casts into the current , so the lure is going with the current upon the retrieval.
@Steven Templeman let me know how you do . I personally like fishing jetties for halibut. Halibut like sandy bottoms , and good current . Just imagine, halibut are going to be stationary in the sand , waiting for their prey. So they will choose a location where bait fish is abundant
Thanks for posting videos on how to catch different types of fish. When i first tried out your technique i caught many types of species including halibut. I never knew about this set up, so i wanted to tell you thanks for sharing your techniques and tips.

Hey Rodney, great info thanks for sharing and showing us your technique. Be safe and blessed 🙏
Hi Rodney, great video, I use drop shot for bass all the time, now I’ll try it in the salt! Just a really good video! Wow!
thanks Lance! Good luck out there! let me know how you do
Incredible fishing Congratulations.

thats dope. tightlines man
The intro is back 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

This looks fun. I’ve never done salt water fishing. This seems like it might be fun to do for the first time
I wish you luck! lmk if this technique helps
Excellent instructional! Thanks
Thank ya! Hope it helps the young or new anglers out there
Pretty cool video. Nice job buddy

Love the hali vids bro
Thanks yo! I'll try and make more 😊
Cool video they look like a fun fish to catch
Super fun! Hope you catch one :)
How about 10 hours of fishing to land my first keeper halibut. That’s persistence right there😂😂
thats quick! haha congrats
Bruh i went out so many times for halibut last yr and didnt catch one keeper hahaha
Awesome dude
For the California halibut I would highly recommend the Storm 360 searchbait pearl white it works really well. Just use a 1/2 ounce jig head and no other weight and if you go to a jetty it works a miracle
heck yeah! totally agree!
loved this vid thank you
:) thank you! good luck out there
Halibut is on my bucket list. Thanks for the tips. Tight lines!
thanks man! hope you catch one! lmk when you do !
@@RodneyMarquezFishingChannel probably won't be for a while. I live in Az. Lol. But when I do, I'll let you know.
some good fishing at Az!
Ya. But wished we had the variety of fish you do.
I visited from AZ a few weeks back and fished Mission Bay over by Paradise Point. I used a the new VMC Tokyo Rig with a 1/4 oz bullet weight and a Z-Man razor shadz in pearl. I couldn’t miss. I didn’t do that great on a drop shot on previous visits for some reason. Not sure if it was the Tokyo Rig shortening up the drop or the more buoyant lure, but it was a night and day difference for me. Give it a shot sometime and let me know what you experience. Thanks for the great content.
I have never tried the Tokyo Rig, I will next time I am out! thanks for sharing techniques
Good video. Good information. Thank you
Thanks for watching and for the positivity
Keep it up....Tight lines
Thanks man !!!
Love the vid any good spots you suggest to those who don’t have DOD access lol
Very nice!!!
Thank you!
great vid
Thank ya:)
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it
Rodney your the man
Thanks man! hope you enjoyed!
Always so helpful, Rodney. Do you ever have to fish weedless? I see all the grass between you and the sand.
Great question ! Yes I do . If I'm targeting spotties and halibut, and fishing heavy grass , I would use this techqniue; ua-cam.com/video/uH1xMNBorY0/v-deo.html
In that video showed my drop shot weedless technique
I am learning from you man. Thanks
Glad to hear it! Hope you enjoy the other content as well
"don't want to lip this guy!" haha! if you do you'll only do it once! nice video.
:D . my friend lipped a huuuuge halibut. that was the last time he lipped a halibut lol
i had one flip it's head up and bite me real good on the thumb when i reached down to unhook it. it was a keeper. i ate that one!
I've caught spotties thanks to your vids man still on the hunt for a halibut though what are good spots
You're a beast bro
Nice Bro...👍🙏
Great video brother, greeting from Perú 😁👍🎣🇵🇪
Peru!? thats so awesome. thanks for saying hi and watching :)
Nice video A good trick is to use a bucktail jig (glorified Bonito feather) as your weight, instead of plain sinker, You can even thread a grub onto that, give um something extra...
RenoTheKid ooo thanks for the advice :) fish on
I'm 50 now, grew up in PB/Crown Point
Sail Bay (Mission Bay) has some big Flatties Got a 20lb and 13lb on one trip, I'd try there...
Nice catch, I actually just caught a halibut on my channel like a week ago.
rodney, i love your videos i have caught so many spotties on your rigs and videos, where is that spot in the video, and where are some good bank fishing halibut spots in SD
Great video, new sub.
Thank you! Hope you enjoy the other content :)
nice tutorial rodney im from the Phillippines new subs. to your channel
awesome! I hope this help your way!
Love the old intro back! Love the video!!!
thanks man! I always try and teach :)
Rodney's Fishing Adventure love it!! I need teaching for the bay.
Rodney's Fishing Adventure 15 k sub special video?
Ill think of something for the 15k mark:)
Rodney's Fishing Adventure Tuna video special?
Awesome bro! Thanks for the tutorial.
Hey, I might visit SD on a Christmas week. Hope we can fish together
I hope we can too !!
👍👍👍🎣🎣🎣
@@MoreThanFishing my wife is due any day now , so it will be hard for me to get out hahah. But I really do man :)
Rodney's Fishing Adventure
I feel you bro, priority first! We’ll keep in touch
@@MoreThanFishing I watch your channel as well and love the shore perch and stripper fishing you do up in the bay!!! I am also going to be in San Diego for the Christmas break and will be looking to do some fishing as well if you are looking for a fishing partner? I would be happy to fish with you! I don't got the local knowledge tho haha.
You should try the new shelter island boat ramp. Me and my friend caught four spotty . And a 15 inch spot.
I will!
Great video :)
thank ya!
Your How to video is better then mine.
keep at it bud
Good vid Rodney. How do you take care of your gear after fishing in the salt? Is it a simple rinse of everything in fresh water? Keep the vids coming.
Thank you Michele, good question. Everytime I go salt water fishing, I always do a water hose rinse. Then, every month or so I take the reel apart and do a deep clean. Taking the reel apart every month, imo, is not necessary unless you fish 3-4 times per week
I"d go 9ft med rod... baitcaster…. …. 1 oz lead drop shot style....... bait 4 feet above.....( lots of bait movement, drop, rise, etc … on .. 10 lb mono … good video
Awesome video rodney do you ever use drooper loop rig?
Thanks for watching yo! And Yes I have in multiple videos I have used a dropper loop setup. Here was the latest one ua-cam.com/video/b7IwGwnu_eQ/v-deo.html
Nice vid. Close up of rig is GREAT. Please include the local regs and legal limit and size and your approx location. Most of these shows are just hero vids of fish catching, nice for you but does me no good. Thanks
thanks! hope the video helps!
Hello my friend I love fishing🎣 I'm new to your channel I love pier fishing I love going to my local piers to fish 👍💯 I hope that someday I can get my fishing license to go rock fishing and surff fishing 🎣
Hello ! thanks for the comment and welcome to the channel. What piers do you like going to?
@@RodneyMarquezFishingChannel hello my friend I like going to Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier and to Cabrillo Beach Pier
Just stumbled on your channel and subscribed. Where are you fishing in California? I’m in the Bay Area teaching nephew fishing but all we catch around the bay is sharks and stingrays
Hey Rodney, Would this dropshot technique work when slow trolling from a boat in around 50+ feet of water?
7 months of quarantining and no fishing. Yesterday i went to go fish for some perch, got a halibut on the third cast! First halibut of my life! I knew so little about it I didn't even know how to deal with it. Found out they have real sharp teeth the hard way
Nice!! haha my friend found out the hard way too!
Must be in the military. I cant figure how to get there without hoppinh a fence. Sick video
DOD :) thanks for the support!
Lol. Im sure ive seen you fishing there. I decked and ran the vendetta for 5 years, and the premier and the malihini. Had to get away. Spend time with family. Cool videos, sucks they closed the rivermouth in south i.b. I caught monsters down there. Some days back to back. Your videos sure bring me back. Look forward to more.
You should ask fishhead to make you a candy sardine lipless crank 3/4oz Hali’s love that bait!
He makes those ???
Not necessarily but he gets the blanks and paints them
@@mariopadilla7508 I'll ask him
Hi Rodney great video brotha!!
I have a question for you, where you recommend to go for halibut fishing in San Diego, where are those sandy botton?
Honestly they are everywhere , off the shoreline of Coronado, harbor island , shelter island . You do need a fishing license tho
Rodney's Fishing Adventure
Thanks so much Rodney for the info. Keep the good work ☺👍
@@almikar1 thanks for the support . Always love helping others , hence why I make these videos :D
Damnnn never thought to target halis over there..
Good luck !
The gulp minnows are my new go to for dropshot for halibut. I noticed almost every time i caught one they had minnows coming out of their mouth.
for sure! I love using those gulp minnows , preferably those 5 inch or 4 inch. thanks for the share
I was thinking if using a 3000 size reel either the Sedona and or sienna reel. With q5 or 20# braid to 10 to 15lb mono top shot.
Great video! Do you think they will still bite over the winter?
Yeah for sure! Caught halibut every month of the year. I caught these two 2 days ago
I thought halibut on bite inshore over the summer. Now that I know this, I'll try fishing for them sometime this week
Good luck man! lmk how you do
Will it mess up your rod to cast a heavier lure weight than what it's rated for?
Hey Rodney, I was wondering what california halibut will bite on that isn’t alive or a form of swim bait, for example will they eat just a straight up dead herring or piece of squid? Let me know.
Hey I don’t really get Mitch luck on those artificial baits can you do a tutorial on cut bait or lib bait?
Will try my best next time I am out
I love fishing and am going to San Diego next month I know with COVID things will be difficult but I’m super excited I have never caught anything saltwater and I’m just wondering what pound line and where I should get everything I’d be super grateful for any advice halibut is definitely what I want to catch the most but I just want to catch anything
Stop by anglers choice. That bait shop have everything you'll need for halibut setup. Go with 12 lbs mono. I like to use izorline. Good luck
excellent advice :)
Trivia... How many times was sandy bottoms mentioned? Whoever guesses will win a wonderful price! Jk great video👍
Cool video my son is in the navy from Alaska and is in San Diego he don’t know a lot about fishing down there is there anyway he could meet up with you and you teach him how to fish there?????
Tell him to message me on Instagram @rodneymarquez :)
Ok his name is Sealth Shepherd ok keep an eye out for him he can’t wait to go fishing
I love your videos. I am living in San Diego. Can you tell me the address can fishing halibut better in San Diego? I hope I can catch my first halibut. Thank you very much.😊
I watch your videos all the time and I try so hard to catch a Halibut with the same stuff you use I usually fish the pier in back of the convention center where do you recommend I fish at to increase my chances?
I recommend either harbor island , shelter island , Spanish landing , jetties of mission bay or Carlsbad lagoon. Fish during moving current and locate schools of baitfish. The halibut love lurking beneath them
@@RodneyMarquezFishingChannel cool man I'm gonna try this Saturday morning thanks and keep up the great videos can you possible do a video on sculpin?
@@rafaelcuevas5383 will do ! I have made one in the past , however I'll make a better one
@@RodneyMarquezFishingChannel cool looking forward to seeing the new video and congrats on the baby happy holidays🤙
Thank you!
Hey I'm kind of a beginner to this salt water stuff and I was wondering if you could tell me a beach in sd like the one you were at
What’s the best lure to catch halibut if you’re in a little boat?
When did young people start calling the bottom or the ground "the floor"? A floor is inside a building. Nice video, enjoyed it.
:D
@MikeMarkCA Have you ever heard of the seafloor? www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=14&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwjaitfJ64LmAhXHUlAKHX4aApEQFjANegQIBBAB&url=https%3A%2F%2Fen.wiktionary.org%2Fwiki%2Fseafloor&usg=AOvVaw1Zu2-eaj1D56VXqmtDFGIR
Does this setup also work for catching bass or mackerel or only halibut
Rodney's fishing adventure, can you find CaliButs all year long in SoCal? I have only fished for them in summer here in Humboldt Bay.
Yup ! In my experiences I've caught them every month of the year here in so cal
Awesome, thanks for the reply, great channel! Helped me catch my first Cali Hali on a drop shot. If you're ever up North, you should fish Humboldt Bay. 👍
heck yea! thanks for sharing that. I will hit you up if Im ever up there :)
what are your opinions on the luck craft flash minnow
I like it! I am trying to capture footage of landing a halibut on the lucky craft. I have before in the surf, however, I need to capture it on footage to share with you guys
Have you ever tried one of the Reebs Razorbacks? Could they work?
I am not too familiar with the razorbacks, however I do use Bolt throwers by Reebs lures, and they work very well! I personally have the calico hunter and white and red colored ones on a 1 oz
Could I use 8lb mono to a heavier lead to fish this way Thank you
Hey this is super late but I’m looking for some good halibut spots in SoCal could you think of any?
I like harbor island in san diego bay or the jetty in mission bay
Hey Rodney, do you ever try Dog Beach Betty?
Jetty.. Sorry
Is there a certain time of the year that works best ?
I like the months of Feb- april in so cal
Is it legal in cali to use a bucktail instead of jus a regular weight? That way you have the bucktail in the bottom and the grub up top?
yup !
@@RodneyMarquezFishingChannel thank you sir!
ill be visiting LA/San Diego from Maryland. Let me know if you are free to fish!
Thats awesome! fishing so cal could be very fun to do. My wife is due any time now so ill be MIA from the fishing for 3 or so months. THere is a fishing tournament this dec 30th . for details follow speedbaits on instagram
Your waters seems calm. Wouldn't it be better to use lighter sinker? Maybe 1 oz?
Should start the video making the rig
Nolan Rogers I made of video just for your inquiry . I hope you enjoy ua-cam.com/video/2Qe9CoCKw8s/v-deo.html
I never caught a halibut and I want to know what is the best choice of bait to use
if youre fishing from the surf try this technique for halibut ua-cam.com/video/25yTYShW8lw/v-deo.html
Thanks good luck on fishing.
What are good dead baits for halibut in San Diego
hey, im from the LA county area but am kind of new to fishing, what are some good spots around here? Thanks!
Harbor island is a great place with good fishing and great view of SD skyline
@@RodneyMarquezFishingChannelsweet bro thanks, next time im down in the San Diego Area ill check that out. its quite a drive from where im at tho haha.
When the piers open up again after the lockdowns (Santa Monica, Manhattan, Hermosa, Redondo), try going there. There's usually a lot of fishermen, and most will definitely help you out.
San Pedro and LB harbour get choke halis. Keep your bait on the bottom.Remember 22in min size. Best during the spawn March - June.
make a video of how to use zoom flukes on the drop shot.
I did already , specifically a white ice zoom fluke bait
Nice fish.
Where Is it?
Americas Harbor, along the side of where the deep sea charter boats launch from
