      Correct me if I’m wrong, but Harrison was mostly a standard tuning player right? And a very unique slide style he had too.

    The tone he's getting is THE sound. Of course it's his technical mastery. But I now feel a craving for a junior. His touch is everything don't kid yourself.

    • @p90bridge
      @p90bridge 4 місяці тому +1

      It’s not “everything”. You can learn that touch, but if you do it on a strat it won’t sound the same. A bad player will sound bad on any guitar, but equipment matters. Besides craving for a junior is just a sign of good taste so keep that up. I’m gonna be looking for a TV double cut Jr shortly myself.

    This is how I’ve always played. Standard tuning slide on the pinky finger. The one real difference in our playing is that I’m not very good.

    Bought the course yesterday.
    A very wise move.
    Dylan is a great educator.
    He gives a thorough and clear presentation
    without dumbing it down.
    Only problem is that I keep looking
    for the like button and the comment field.
    So I'llI have to do that here:
    👍👍👍👍👍 😎
    Kudos to Rhett for helping him spread the message.

    Great great playing both of you. I've been playing slide for 45 years and it's such a joy to see you younger folks being so good at explaining the physics of melody shapes and slide playing technique. Cool when Rhett just slightly touched the chords behind Dylan's explanations, gave it a nice harmonic context for everything. Thanks guys!

    Kudos Rhett on your willingness and efforts at helping to promote other musicians that your audience (not sure if that’s the correct term anymore) can benefit from learning from. I didn’t play for about ten years and, after picking it back up in a new world where learning new avenues of playing are literally at your fingertips whenever you want it, the content you’re producing is a true blessing. I have gotten so much from this channel, combined with your website, and I’m about to check out the link you provided for Dylan. For those of us that aren’t as familiar with the Nashville and/or Atlanta music scenes, exposing the world of music to the quality of musicians such as yourself and those you present on your channel is nothing short of priceless!

    Strangely, I came to learning slide via an unlikely path. I am a keyboard player who got turned on John McLaughlin in the seventies, which led to an obsession with Jan Hammer and pitch bending on synth, which led back to guitarists. As you point out in this video, the slide gives you great expressive opportunities to play with pitches in beautiful ways. For me, it is almost like one of those new midi synth controllers that let the player do things that are hard to do on fixed fret/fixed keyboard instruments.
    Dylan sounds great and, since I play slide only in standard tuning, he has reinforced the route that chose long ago. Very inspiring. Thanks to you both.

    This was great! Very usable, relatively uncomplicated shapes. The practice suggestions (e.g. "try playing a drone alongside" or "come up with a lick without the slide and then learn it with the slide") are actionable enough that I'm gonna try them next time I pick up my guitar. Thank you for this!.

    I started playing slide way back in 1975. First in standard tuning, then in open E and G and finally in open C. Standard tuning is the most flexible if you put the slide on your ring finger and you can fret behind it and get the best of both worlds, using the slide more as an accent/vibrato while not fearing out of tune notes in runs. Open tunings lend themselves to idiomatic riffs associated with each tuning.

  • @createlovehappy
    @createlovehappy 4 місяці тому

    I learned in a modified open G because the wood bodied duolian Dobro came with this tuning when I got it. Sounded like a cross between Sun House and Keith Richards. Can’t wait to try all this in standard. Thanks. I love how in standard you have all the major triads on the dgb strings and minor triads on the gbe strings. Melody is all about the triads for me. Well done guys

    Cool. I’ve been teaching myself standard tuning slide and exploring a similar approach. I need to take his course. I’ve been doing open tuning slide for a while, but there are Hill Country Blues songs (Going Down South) that are in standard but the break played by Kenny Brown is slide. Doing that while thumbing a drone is wonderful.

    So, you didn't specifically state it (unless I missed it), but my guess is that the "normal" way to learn to play with a slide is to use an open-tuning because you can press the slide up against a single fret and grab a chord with all 6 strings? Or a pair, or whatever -- any combination of strings you pick will be a chord because of the tuning, yes?

    • @8OBO8
      @8OBO8 4 місяці тому +1

      Yes, this is correct. Open E is the most common tuning for slide, for that reason.

  • @johnchristie7211

    Great Video! My slide issue is not the scale shapes but keeping the slide from banging on the neck. The only fix I've found so far is raising the action and heavier strings. Which means I can't really play slide on my main guitar since its set up so low. I've tried glass and metal slides and still cant get it right.
    Any suggestions?

    • @Deepriver100
      @Deepriver100 3 місяці тому

      My suggestion is learn to play Masco Blues by Martin Simpson (available on YT). A slide instrumental played in open G on an acoustic capo'd at third fret. If you can learn to play that half as clean and clear as Martin you will be able to play slide on just about any guitar however low the action! (I've been trying to learn it for around 20 years on and off and have just about mastered the first four bars....)
