Laphroaig Lore Review

- It’s time to review the new Laphroaig Lore. According to John Campbell only 6 whiskies make up Lore. They are aged between 7 and 21 years and include some ¼ cask matured (probably the 7 year old), a 9 year refill ex-bourbon, a 9 year double matured (ex-bourbon then virgin European oak), a 1993 distilled 21 year old Laphroaig, some unspecified aged whisky that was matured in reused Laphroaig casks and another unspecified aged sherried Laphroaig as well. It took John Campbell 18 months to develop this whisky and he was aiming for it to be the richest Laphroiag he’s made.
As of 05-27-2016, my current bottle count stands at over 2,300 bottles. I am a Certified Specialist of Spirits and have also been certified by the Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT). I've been actively collecting for the last two decades and what started as a small basic home bar has transformed (with the help and understanding of my wonderful wife) into what I think is a pretty nice collection. Thank you for watching and sharing in my passion.
Cheers!
Great review hounddog. I am in awe at your spirit collection.
Loads of knowledge, experience and heart. Keep it up and thank you. Cheers :)
Love your expressive reviews while sipping on my dram of Lore!...........Thank you
You are the man, great review.
excellent review of the Lore.
One small request: ould you do a review of the old Laphroaig 15 that you mentioned here ?
impressive collections by the way!
+astcal - Thanks! The old Laph 15 is very good, but also very soft compared to the style they're blending now. I reviewed it along side the newer 200th Anniversary 15 and Cairdeas a year ago. Cheers!

Great Review so descriptive I've feel like I've tasted it. - Hope to see you do the Lagavulin 8!!! Cheers
The Lag 8 video is on the way very shortly. Cheers!
Great point about 21 YO whisky, and if it will continue to be included in this product. As you stated it isn't cheap for an NAS whisky!
Nice review. Haven't seen this in my area (VA,...ABC,...pfft) but the price point I've seen online is enough to steer me clear as the reviews have been mixed. Would like to try though -- really want to get my hands on a bottle of the Committee release of Ardbeg Dark Cove.
Great review Hound. I finally bought myself a bottle and it's either one of the first batch or they have maintained the standard. I had my doubts but I have to say this is a very well made whisky. I have quite a number of single barrel indie Laphroaigs and they are usually excellent and often better value than distillery offerings. Unfortunately Laphroaig is creeping up in price now. Cheers
This is a fantastic whisky
It is Soooo smooth and finishes even smoother. The sweetness is so nice combined with the smoke and brine
Before drinking it, I never would have thought that Laphroig would have the easiest drinking whisky that ie tried.
Very helpful and accurate review!
As always you are spot on with this one. 👍🏻
I used a Xmas gift card to purchase at $120 in VA. Damn steep for NAS, and no clue if it still contains 21 yr old juice. It is now 48% ABV. This stuff is freaking terrific. Sooo much going on. Fans of the distillery are going to love this. I can’t think of Laphroaig I’ve liked better, and I’ve tried 14 or 15.
I'm so glad you're enjoying it! Cheers!
Great video review!
Great review, thanks!
nice comparison to Cairdeas!!!! while you described it, I had a feeling it might be similar... loved last years
Excellent again. How far away is this from the Laphroaig Triple Wood ? I guess the old casks in here make a lot of difference.
Thanks for these videos. Fun stuff
Great review! Have you tried the An Cuan Mor? If so, and thoughts on how they compare? Cheers!
great reviews!
Another great review. If you were to have a first pick of a Laphroaig would it be the Lore or the 18 yr. Thanks
I'd go with this initial batch of Lore. The 18 can come off a bit too soft for some. Cheers!
10 year cask strength
I do enjoy the 10 year better than the 15 though
Would you consider this the best replacement for Laphroaig 18?
Probably the one that replaced the 18 year would be the closest - Laphroaig Lore, but for the money, the 15 year (which I still see around) would make a fruitier substitute. Beyond those, look for independent Laphroaig single cask bottlings, or leave the brand for something a little punchier like Bruichladdich’s Port Charlotte. Cheers!
@@LiquorHound I like the idea of this replacement ... a Lore, a 15 and a BPC. A good trade! Cheers! Thanks for the response and great info in your vids. Peace.
IMO the best whiskey on the planet
The cinnamon smell is really upfront for me, followed by the familiar Laphroig smoky iodine scents, but subdued compared to the 10
could you share a little about your nosing method? I notice you take short continuous breaths during nosing.
Thanks but remember only 10,000 cases getting hard to fine here in Missouri. sold out just about every where here!
Great review ,cheers.
Looking to buy this now in 2020. Loved what u said about the future releases changing. Have u gone back to it with a later batch? Still as good? ...I wonder.
I haven't, but now you have me curious. If I ever do that side-by-side, I'll let you know. Cheers!
great review man. Thanks.
When are you doing Bruichladdich Black Art 04.1?
Seems like this LORE has it all. This is going to be my next purchase. In your opinion, how does this compare to Lag Distillers Edition?
Love that review! just ordered a bottle online. can you do a Yippee Ki Yay from High West review?! Thanks!
+Larry Lee - Thank you and congratulations on picking up a bottle. As for the High West Yippie Ki Yay, I'll be honest and say that I did not particularly care for it, so I won't be shooting a review on it. I found the Syrah/Vermouth finishing to be too odd for my liking. I think they would've been better off just choosing one or the other. Cheers!
+LiquorHound cheers to you too mate!
Im really trying to decide if i wanna drop the coin on the lore. I love the 10yr and also laga 16 and Ardbeg Corryvreckan. Those three are my staple whiskies. The tasting notes are so varied from one person to the next. But laphroaig overall is my favorite distillery so it cant be bad for me i guess lol
If the current Laphroaig profile is a favorite of yours, you’ll enjoy Lore for the experience of a more refined version. But it may not be as big of a value as some others you mentioned. Cheers!
Spot on.
Have yet to see this in my area, hopefully it will make its way out here soon. Unrelated, but I see that bottle of Reyka on the shelf behind you; how do you like it?
Reyka is a really nice vodka with a depth of flavor. Cheers!
it was my favorite whiskey last year actually
Bravo. Thanks.
in your opinion do you think Lore was created and marketed to be a direct competitior to Ardbegs Uigeadail? Another great review btw, cheers!
Perhaps it was initially thought up to compete with Uigeadail, but once the older whiskies were added (and at the subsequent higher price point), I think they began looking beyond Uige in the hopes that this standard release could make a splash by competing with the special release of "Dark Cove". Of course all this could be setting up the new standard pricing bar for the best "readily available" Islay whisky at $100+. Ugh, let's hope not! Cheers!
would you prefer the lore to the ardbeg uigedail? ugi is way cheaper in Germany and i suppose the ppr is better
Jamon!!!! Definitely better than prosciutto!
what do you think about crown royal noble cornerstone? and will you do a review.
I haven't picked it up yet. If I do, I'll see about shooting a video. Cheers!
hey ,question. would you purchase seasoned wood for $150? and have you had it? thanks
Yes I would. It reminds me of store pick Weller 12 from years ago. Cheers!
+LiquorHound cool thanks for the reply. you're the second one to say it's taste like weller 12.
What distinguishes the first batch from subsequent batches?
+Jeremy H - I'm guessing we're going to have to go by bottling codes to find the early releases. My code is located just below the front label and starts with "L6049". Cheers!
I appreciate the review, but I think you've put the cart before the horse. You talk so much of the fruit, etc., when 99% of people are going to get socked in the nose and mouth by the peat, smoke, iodine, brine, and earth (although half-way thru a dram, your senses start to adjust and the other notes can peak out).
It's a rip-off in Ontario Canada. Our monopoly government store marks this up beyond belief. On Laphroaig's site with the exchange rate, it's CAN$85. Our government-run store sells it for CAN$200.
How does that compare to Ardbeg dark cove?
I still like DC better. Cheers!
Whats the richest Laphroaig???
+Dankzzz - That's a tough one. I'd say some of the older Laphroaig 30's, or some of the old green stripe cask strengths. Cheers!
How do you afford this stuff?
I buy 99% at retail pricing, and slowly acquired them over the last 20+ years. Cheers!
That is $130.00, there is better scotches for a lot less
Non Age Statement Scotch = marketing hype (OK, marketing BS....lol)
