Larry: "you play lame as fuck"
Sonix: "thanks for inviting me on the podcast"
Massive Respect for Sonix for maining a character he loves and puts up with the hate.
He really is a good example of character dedication. He took a character so unexplored and proved he was busted as heck, when nobody else would/could. I bet we'll see that happen with more characters at some point, and I can't wait for the community to shake up lol.
Goat fr
true that i hate his gamestyle of camping but overal his daddication is out of the box
It's how all us Sonic mains feel! We love Sonic and even his lameass moveset but it's Sonic the Hedgehog so we love him and we play him to win under any circumstances also play to win! Hate the character and the game not the player! Hate fuels my gameplay however!!
@@SonicRasengan I don't play sonic but i used to dabble with him in PM and Brawl and honestly i cannot do what you guys do. It's hard to play that slow, genuinely, i get impatient after a while it's impressive how strong your guys mental is. It helps that when you guys get really good matchups you do some sick stuff
Thanks Larry for doing interviews like these. People have had a misconception of Sonix for so long because they hate the character he plays. Inteviews like these reveal to the world that Sonix isn't a bad guy. He's just playing his character and trying to win like everyone else. He's seems like a great guy!
@The Yo Cry about it
@The Yo ratio
@The Yo people love to be spiny
by "cool sonics" do you mean elite smash montages with only whiff punishes lol
@The Yo Friend, you just said you don't like the playstyle and gave no reasons. Pray tell how to deconstruct a lack of points?
Great interview! Sonix is a great person and player and I’m glad you’ve given him a spotlight
The theme of character dedication that you mentioned reminds me of another player who very recently has become one of the greatest mid-tier heroes and I think it would be a really cool and interesting interview whenever it makes sense to do it: Dabuz.
I wouldn't say it was a recent development, but I completely agree! Dabuz has luma'd his way to like my top 3 favorites to win any major I watch :D
Fun larry fact: the larry fact guy has not arrived yet.

Lets go.......🇩🇴

The way Sonix describes how he built his gameplay in matchups is inspiring. I think a lot of new players can learn a lot from it.
17:35 this right there, I used to have this “aggressive” stigma(with duckhunt) of liking a character but don’t want to be annoying by your peers, but hearing this makes me realize being defensive to a certain extent is ok and be patient is ok.
no its not, by camping you're still ruining the game, sincerley.
@@postmodernerkindergartner960 depends hate the character not the player, and I should’ve put emphasis “To a certain extent” if you’re engaging and 50% to 30% of your damage as zoner is projectiles then that’s fine it’s really the stalling and running away the whole match and 80-100% of your total damage is through stalling/projectiles.
@@DrunkPanda239 The objective of the game is to knock your opponent off the map. If you're camping as sonic (who has no projectiles), you're literally not playing smash. You're playing annoying mind games instead of just showing your skill in the game. It's like, "I can't beat this person, so I'm going to run around him and wait on the other side of the stage for him to make a mistake so I can get the advantage". Such a beta play style.
@@dennisd.4726 I agree with sonic part being beta but what Larry said about people who say they are “playing aggressive”with characters like Pac-Man,banjo,duck hunt, olimar,,samus, snake etc, you shouldn’t be shamed especially if you are knocking out the opponent are playing to win.
I guess “aggressive” and “defensive” and “camping” can vary to certain people. The video was about sonic that line can resonate with people who play zoners also.
@@postmodernerkindergartner960 It's an integral part of the game at this point. The best thing we can do is find the joy in learning how to beat it.
Really glad you did this interview because before I used to absolutely HATE the way Sonix plays, but after I've started to appreciate how he approaches preparing for certain playstyles and understand his point of view.
imagine being such a clown you hate someone you dont even know
I still don’t like him and am entitled to that, obviously I don’t endorse harassment to anyone for playing a character but you do realize no one is obligated to like anyone right?
FFS some people get attacked by other sonic mains/drones for simply saying “I don’t like sonix”
@@snoppdoog4921 that's why I'm glad Larry did the interview, because he showed me a different way of looking at sonix that I can appreciate.
Also I should've said I hate that way Sonix plays, not him as a person
@vaLy amogus
@vaLy but fr my bad i misread the post:(
I respect him for playing sonic. He plays a character he loves. I have the same character dedication with Mario. I can easily relate to him
I love Sonix, he’s very down to earth
Sonix in the 3ds days used to be in a crew with me named RS. I could really see his potential back than. Really proud for what he's accomplished now
What an excellent interview. Well facilitated and well paced. Loving the quality content Larry
People have this weird idea that you must always be aggressively approaching, even if it’s to your own detriment, which is silly. If you’re finding your opponent is just standing their ground and rebuffing all your approaches and you’re just getting hit constantly, there is nothing wrong with slowing down and making them come to you. You have no obligation to play in a way that your opponent wants you to play.
Mad respect to Sonix. Man has to deal with so much hate
Luckily for him steve and kazuya exist now so much of the hate is focused towards those characters
12:51 I agree with him so much here this is just like the Steve situation we’re having now and I’m glad to see people who think the same way I do
I'm so surprised because multiple people have shown there is Steve counterplay with some characters, we saw a Lucas player show one way to best Steve and it's by having a gross spike and we've seen DDee do Evey well by just having moves that destroy blocks quickly but can also play Steve's game
I actually really like this. Seeing the mentality of a pro Smash player is very interesting and informative to me. Also, 3 hours of taking notes?! Bro, that's some dedication, lol.
6 hours lol, I think he said he took 3 hours each day for 2 days
@@Hubrishumilityok oh right, he said he did it twice, lol that's crazy
I love this video because it centers around a point I've been trying to make for a long time. I've played alot of fighting games since I was a kid. I grew up with my brother and two older cousins. We had house rules and you weren't allowed to main someone else's main. They would always get their hands in the game first and main the top tier characters. So I always played as the underdog. I realized then that I much rather get better with and learn the ins and outs of a character I love than to submit to tier lists. Tier Lists are viable but alot of the time it's the better player who wins. I've seen crazy upsets with "low tier" characters. I will always play who I love in any game. Yoshimitsu and Leo in Tekken, Tira and Talim in SC, Wattson in apex and so on. I hope more ppl start to play with characters they love instead of subscribing to the top 5 characters all of the time.
I have refused to play Roy over Chrom for years now.
@@Sprocket_777 I have a pocket chrom, he feels so good to play. The speed is addictive.
Dedication sure has payed off for Void, I mean look at how many majors he's won being dedicated to Sheik right guys!? RIGHT GUYS!?
He very rarely competes anymore
Don’t do Void like that
@@walkermurphy9913 wonder why lol
I wish void did better at majors because his sheik is amazing to watch, but i think he’s going to be playing more multiversus instead( I know he’s going to smash con). Shiek is overrated as hell though.
he won one with tom
This is such good content, really helps the community out imo
I already thought Sonix was a cool dude. It's nice seeing interviews like this :)
12:42 I can agree this is one of the biggest problems players have. People are even like this towards the bad characters.
He's definitely earned his spot as the best solo main Sonic. Especially with how he's getting better at aggro/defense switching, imo what's made Ken bar-none the best Sonic player since Smash 4
Yeah his sonic seems better than ken's at this point. Of course that's helped by ken focussing a lot on seph recently
@@greedo194 Honestly I think he was the best sonic even before KEN. Tho they were very close but at this point even if KEN went back to solo sonic I still think he'd be worse
After watching this video all I can think of is how sick it would have been had they actually given shadow as one of sonic's alts. or any of the other similar sonic characters to be honest.
imagine trash talking ur friend so much they get a chip on their shoulder big enough to rank 6th on their first PR season
Larry should interview Mew2King. Jason is the goat of the entire Smash series
Thanks for making this happen Larry, love your content, helps a lot
I appreciate Sonix a lot for this. He's pretty inspiring to me. His Sonic is definitely the best and his story he shared is sooo relatable.
I only play characters that are underrated or hated a LOT (Marth, Corrin, Zelda, and Hero). Everyone tells me to play a known top tier, and I tried, but I dislike ALL of their playstyles. I played Lucina, Roy, and Chrom and I still like Marth way more (I had more success with him, too). Tried Aegis over Corrin, I hate Aegis. Tried literally anyone over Zelda, she still carries. I played Hero as my main pocket... no way in this world I'm picking Palu or G&M over him.
I think it's great to have a best main, but I also think having another character or 2 (in my case another 3 lol) to use to shake things up and counterpick is also super effective.
One of these days I'll be on Sonix's level of experience. I know I have the potential to win tournaments, I just have to visit some more locals.
I’m assuming your talking about winning online with those characters. Once you go to real tournaments you will see. Marth is super inconsistent and can’t kill offline where people won’t miss input due to lag. Corrin has obvious flaws that are easy to exploit offline. Zelda is super bad and slow, her game plan is more basic then Marths and all you have to do is react. Hero is only good if your getting lucky. He’s too slow if you know how to fight him. You’ll see in tournament when you get wrecked because no matter how good you are, if your character is bad you are nerfing yourself. Only when you go to a tournament or two will you see that I’m right. Lucina is Marth if Marth could kill, aka she’s super good. I currently main lucina and counter pick samus. Lucina can win pretty much every matchup except super spammy projectile characters, then I switch and spam harder with samus. I’ve gone to 5 locals so far, won 5.
@@1stbestpokemaster I have gone to real tournaments lol. I am definitely talking about both online and offline. I have no consistency issues with Marth (I know a lot of Marth tech lol), but I do have issues with other things (MU knowledge, neutral gameplay, stuff like that). Every offline player I played against said my Marth, Zelda, and Corrin are good but I just need to know more about the characters I face. I've never used Zelda or Hero in bracket yet, but I'll definitely try since I've noticed they may be way more effective than I thought (ESPECIALLY Hero). Hero is not only good if you "get lucky." A lot of times I rarely use down special lol. He isn't just RNG. He has so many other tools people aren't utilizing. Sometimes I literally just open down special just to get my opponent to break away from attacking lol.
It's cool you won 5 locals with who you like, but I am not switching characters personally. I tried playing Lucina and I hate her lol. Everyone says my Marth is better and I've played Lucina for quite some time (say almost a year).
@@Spyder-Marth well the further up the ladder you go, the better players and people you face, the less consistent your Marth will become. People will know how to parry the tipper you wanted to kill with, then they live till 180. I agree with esam in playing both that Marth is an entire tier under lucina. Shes easily top tier, he’s easily high tier. Hitting tippers feels good and killing at 60-80 is nice, but it’s not gonna happen very often against high/top level players. You’ll find out though bro you don’t have to take my word for it or esams, experience is the best teacher lol.
@@1stbestpokemaster Yeah we'll see. I personally don't like ESAM but he does make good points.
@@Spyder-Marth I think esams tier lists are the most accurate of any tier list for one reason: he’s the most analytical top tier player there is. He can tell you exactly what kills with who from where and what matchups are good or bad off the top of his head every time. It’s actually insane how much data he knows about the game off the top of his head. Also playing Marth since melee (glory days Marth) and then switching from him to lucina In ultimate, safe to say I have a crap ton, years upon years of Marth experience, and I can feel and see the difference in consistency and pressure. People see a Marth, they are like oh ok this should be a good match. People see lucina, they are like fuck I have to be careful. As someone who has also won locals with lucina and lost to those same people in friendlies with Marth, I can say from experience the gap is undeniable between them. I’m not telling you who to play I’m just saying that when your ready to step your game up to the next level, you’ll eventually start using lucina if you love the Marth/lucina kit like I do. Zelda is an online monster and nothing more, use her in a bracket and you’ll quickly find that out. When you can’t react to her moves due to Input delay and lag she is busted, one of the best kits in the game, offline, she’s about as slow as incineroar. Hero is absolutely just luck. Hero is so slow if you have a fast swordie or rush down like lucina or Mario, what can hero do? He can spam down b without looking an get lucky, or get a lucky crit hit or something. Other then that he’s not catching lucina or Mario in the air or on the ground and if you know the matchup like I do, walk up tilt attack lucina, and parry projectiles literally is usually a 3stock game for me. Easily. Hero is at best a mid tier, maybe if piloted by a top 20 player he could be pushed into high tier, maybe.
Bro I hate Sonic with my body, mind and soul but I can't not appreciate the skill of a player and the effort put into a craft, never hate a player. It's just a guy.
Most sonic mains play this character because of dedication to the character. As do I. Massive respect
Bro said “give me some time” and became one of the best players in the world
12:44 Yeeeeeessss!!! Finally! Someone who gets it!!!
this was nice to watch
The Best sonic i saw in smash
As much as it is easy for tons of people to hate on Sonic mains, you gotta respect the fact that they do it because they actually like the character as a whole and not just in Smash
The funniest part is dunno if people know how hard it is to actually camp. Camping is mostly about being able to scare someone with options effectivle I've played Since players before, mostly in other games but it still applies, and they seem to think they can sit still and just spindash but there's more to it about that mainly down to timing and such because people can weed out patterns of your predictable
Sonix out here representing our country it’s about time we got some dominican representation
It's not like he was dedicated to donkey kong lol
BRO LARRY you can't just call him lame to his face 😂
Been loyal to inkling and i still think they are very very good. People say she can’t kill but you just edge guard.
Respect for Sonix sticking with the character regardless of the hate for him.
Good interview more people need to see this, even if you hate sonic thinking anyone would leave with a new perspective and some respect for his play. Sonix is my favorite sonic to watch, that said timing out in friendlies is unethical 😂.
This inspired me to solo main Wolf
Ganondorf mains malding at every bad mu
as a solo gnw main I low key think solo maining is better than picking up a ton secondaries long term. Having a dedicated main is more important than using 5 characters you’re not comfortable with
It’s why players like tweek and void struggled before
Mkleo plays like everyone
There's nothing wrong with picking up a secondary lol. You can be dedicated to one character but also have a secondary as a back-up option. A ton of top players have done it.
If you solo main a top tier like Joker, I can see why you wouldn't want to pick anyone else up, though. You solo main G&M, so you understandably feel no need to use anyone else.
Well Void doesn’t really compete that often and when he does nowadays it’s really just the Sheik. Also Tweek is kind of a different case study imo. Tweek is different from your average co main player. Tweek is more like I’m going to play a completely different character every other tourney. While I agree having to warm up more than two characters in bracket is too much, I personally think having two dedicated characters that have different matchup spreads and can counterpick opponents to completely different stages is the way to go. Some examples of this are Leo (obviously), Proto, Kola, Lui$, Shuton, Ken and Tea among many others.
@@Spyder-Marth that’s why I said low key lmao
@@janswhatsupdoc Oh lol my bad. I missed that
"chronic" is a much better tag lmao
You should totally do an interview with yonnni, that interview would honestly be really awesome
Back during the brawl days I played sonic and Luigi ( I was 7-10 btw) and never got to play sm4sh cuz we never had a wii u but once ultimate came, I took a break from playing sonic and played around with more characters. I ended up maining greninja and I still do main him along with sonic and min min ( cry about it ). I only played sonic in brawl because I was a die Hard sonic fan and still am to this day 😁
Larry the goat with interviews lately.
Sonix plays guitar!?
Corrin is a good example.
I might be in the minority here, but I really do like watching Sonix play. His movement is so clean
I feel like you definitely are. But you each there own. I like watching almost every character in this game except for sonic and I know I am in the minority there.
I actually agree.
I really enjoy watching sonix everything he does makes sense even if it’s lame as shit sometimes. And when he goes aggressive af it’s sick to watch
I remember playing sonix on 3DS he was really good even then
Larry listens
Great interview. Going forward I have respect for Sonix. Im not too into the scene to hate a person I dont know based on their win tactic. He has dicipline.
I am that Villager. Te queremos Carlitos
Ayyy sonix plays MapleStory
I know it's often said in joke but camping is a legitimate strategy.
Amazing & interesting video!!!
This gives me hope for Ridley and Marth
right, look at dabuz and his rosalina, you should interview him next !!
So I *should* keep playing Ganon
I'm so early that I haven't finished studying for an exam yet :)
Interview Marss plz
Sonix top 1 player.

Hi Larry Lurr
I don't know why more people don't play the brawl characters
Wolf?
@@Sprocket_777
wolf makes an exception
Lol what about Rob?
Sonic may be a shitty character but, that doesn't mean that have to hate Sonix
Yuh
I guess a player such as peanut as all the reasons in the world to drop little Mac for a top tier character then ha ha. It is not that peanut is mostly at fault, it honestly is that little Mac is the worst character in the whole character in ultimate.
I lump sonix and dabuz into the category of I respect them, but I’d really rather not play against them
Lmao playing random for 5 years go brrrr
Yes it pays off if your character is top tier
3ds gang
I mean loyalty to a broken top tier definitely will pay off 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Sonic broken AF but at the start of ultimate everyone thought he was mid and some even thought low tier yet he stuck with him. The reason people are now seeing Sonic as a top tier is largely due to Sonix
🇩🇴
I can’t believe I’m losing to this character, this makes no sense, why does their move linger forever.
Actual reason: online.
Respectfully you play lame 💀🤣
