Talked with him at the most recent Wavedash, he's a super nice guy and he genuinely just loves Sonic.
I asked him later how the matchup for PT was against Sonic. He said the "matchup is winnable, but very hard." I think he likes the memes lmao
One other thing that I will always respect about Sonix is that he plays to win, not to please. While I get disliking someone's playstyle, we're all competing for the same thing.

You should totally do a video on Dabuz, his transition in the view of the community from the sonix-like role of the lame guy, to the crowd favorite. It’s been so awesome to watch, and it’s cool to think about 2015 Dabuz seeing the smash con crowd rallying behind him this year.

    • @pedreiva
      @pedreiva Рік тому +5

@@nathanlevesque7812 Unless you're talking in a figurative sense, this just isn't true. He was a Rosalina main throughout Smash 4. His popularity seems like a combination of little things.
For example, he practically represents the old guard now. He has been a top player for over a decade and is still out here taking on the new kings and rising stars while his contemporaries all retire/focus on content creation. And he didn't have any sort of weird drama come out from the Smash purge of 2020, so older fans *really* started to hold him in this regard.
He has also been seen as the gatekeeper. For a long time, people would say that you aren't truly elite until you beat Dabuz since he's so consistent that he rarely loses to people outside of the top ranks. This, of course, also meant Dabuz would be seen losing to eventual heroes/villains of the community a LOT.
There's also the fact that Rosalina was heavily changed between games. Back in smash 4, Rosalina just needed rage and up air in order to win full sets. She was one of the genuinely broken characters in the game and people HATED her. In comes Ultimate with nerfs to rage and a few other tweaks and the character is suddenly no longer top tier. People are more willing to watch this version of Rosalina that works better as a puppet character with a bunch of unique tech. Dabuz's decision to pick her back up and make her work puts him in a bit of a character specialist category.
      Most importantly, *DaLips*

Hi, it's xenozades. This is such a cool video!
For anyone who is curious, a bit of backstory:
I would post the original tweet but I think youtube is auto-deleting comments with links lol
So I was just on Twitter at like 2AM scrolling and I saw the Knockdown #79 tweet. I was like "oh damn there was a Knockdown?" So I watched the VOD, came back to the tweet and started laughing at how funny Sonix looked in the picture. Bro looked so smug with the Shadow t-shirt on it was hilarious. It reminded me of the MU is unwinnable meme so I went into Kapwing and was originally just going to create another version of that meme with this photo. IDK why I changed it but "Up a stock? You know the vibes" just felt like the most fitting text to accompany that specific picture. Like, he looks like he's saying that lmao. Anyway, I posted it, went to bed and woke up to like 400 likes (I'm a small account so that was a lot) and was kinda surprised but I never thought it would affect Sonix's image as much as it has.
As a big Sonix fan it's really nice to know that a random shitpost I made at 2AM has been so influential towards changing the perspective people have for him and his play. Defensive play is really intricate and interesting to me so having more people respect it (even though Sonix himself isn't that campy most of the time IMO) is awesome to me. Memes truly are the DNA of the soul 🏕⬆

Every single little interaction is massively important because of how few and far between interactions are. Even a few percent can swing the match and cause you to lose. Keeping up that focus up for 7 minutes every single game is downright exhausting, and it quickly leads to mistakes and you losing.

As some who currently plays a competitive fighting game (Rivals of Aether), I can confirm that playing campy is sometimes the only means of winning as a character or beating a character.
Top Level play is all about maintaining or winning neutral. You only win neutral by successfully landing a combo. You only maintain neutral by camping.
In an explosive game like Ultimate, where tons of characters kill you off 2-3 neutral interactions, of fucking course you're going to camp. Ultimate doesn't have a diverse set of movement options for approaching and baiting approaches, so camping is literally your only option for maintaining neutral.

I learned the value of camping for Yink. He is my main, and just like Sonix, I thought that camping was super lame, and I wanted people to see that Yink could be different. However I kept loosing so I still say I play aggressive, but I play more defensive than I used to.

Damn I was definitely one the people who didn’t like how Sonix played and I main Sonic but seeing from his pov I understand now. Also props to him it takes a lot to play like the way he does and control his character well because I get too aggressive and start doing dumb shit to the point it puts me in a bad spot.

honestly, the camping isn't even what is annoying to me with sonic, it's how his moves sound (like a high pitched whine, hurts my ears lol) and how repetitive it feels to fight him due to the nature of his moves being half ball/spin, if sonic was more visually interesting people wouldn't mind him as much imo

Sonic (the character) still gunna get hate cuz people still complain he’s boring to watch fight, just like jigs still gets hate for the the same reason
Long story short you join a tournament to win AT ALL COST not to please the spectators, they ain’t paying his bills

I definitely think Ultimate could use more wholesome content like this. I actually prefer to fight Sonic over a lot of other "hype" characters. The approach of various dashes, spins, and movement isn't any worse than characters spamming things like fair/nair or fishing for down-throw combos. If the game got a bit more lame in the future (and/or more neutral), I could get into that.

I've NEVER understood the people who defend Ken and crack down on sonix. Again, as mentioned in the video, I don't think people watch the videos they comment on in many cases and I think that's contributed to the overall bad reception sonix has gotten but more so, I just don't like the hypocrisy. Ken, great guy personality wise, has got to be one of THEE campiest players in ultimate and that says a lot that I'm not the biggest fan because I love Dabuz' "Stone wall agression" and Sonix' "mental wall fortitude" where they have a similar mindset of stalling a match albeit through different means. Ken just never seems to aggress even when the opportunity presents itself like he's constantly playing for time and that's his win condition but he gets people that back him up and say that sonix is just worse. Why???
