As some who currently plays a competitive fighting game (Rivals of Aether), I can confirm that playing campy is sometimes the only means of winning as a character or beating a character. Top Level play is all about maintaining or winning neutral. You only win neutral by successfully landing a combo. You only maintain neutral by camping. In an explosive game like Ultimate, where tons of characters kill you off 2-3 neutral interactions, of fucking course you're going to camp. Ultimate doesn't have a diverse set of movement options for approaching and baiting approaches, so camping is literally your only option for maintaining neutral.
Sonix of all Sonic players deserves true respect. He actually acts like Sonic and wants matches to end as soon as possible. He can join the dark side sure, but rarely and the camping can be stopped. In truth, he wants to win properly. He doesn't camp exactly like the other players and waste time, which is exactly what Sonic hates.
Sonix is my favorite player on ult, what a goat, he plays how he has to play and when he interacts he’s EXPLOSIVE, hope people can grow up a bit and see he’s great.
I would never send hate messeges to a player I hate watching. I just watch something else until the set is over. I refuse to watch sets that go over 30 minutes that arent grand final resets.
Sonix's mentality early on of wanting to be aggressive and different to change perception of his character is almost verbatim what I said while picking up Samus. I guess I now know if I want to win to further develop my mentality to do what I need to instead of just "cool" things
You know watching this made me realized they are not the villain watching them talk about this type of shit made him look more human i never hated him because lets face it i dont know him but iv hated a fair share of players and watching interviews whit them just made that go away knowing that they are doing what they enjoy
Before i clicked on this vid the first thought i had was sonix, at first when i watched for the first time people were just hating on him and so i followed the herd and hated too but the more sets i watch of sonix the more found out that this player is cool and he brings out the full potential of this character
KEN played different before though. He aimed for his opponent instead of their bubble and didn't disengage after every hit. Plus he was genuinely way better than every other Sonic for years. It wasn't 'Japan bias' or a personality thing at all. That narrative is 100% a Mandela effect.
That’s the nature of FIGHTING in general @Sonix like you said Street Fighter also could be really slowed down but even in real life you don’t just swing because it could leave you open, people hated on Floyd Mayweather boxing style basically saying he “camps” IrL 😂 but look at his win record no denying that and that isn’t easy.
Another thing that helps is when people do fun things during the campy matches like Coney’s stream where he’ll speedrun Mario 64 during campy sets. Small things like that can help people digest slow gameplay
Even if you hate Sonix you have to admit that hes an amazing player and being able to play as he does for so long takes massive skill and endurance. I know a lot people find his gameplay boring, I love more neutral focused gameplay, which is why I love Smash 64 Also Coney doing a SM64 speed run during long Sonix sets is hilarious
Lol same happened to Dabuz in 4. Certain man just spew out all their hate against someone for their main or playstyle, but the moment the memes start it's "oh nah lol he funny af" - they just magically become liked. If you can just switch attitudes like that did you ever really dislike him? Or are you just naturally spiteful?
I used to not like Sonix’s playstyle back when I solely played elite, but then I got into tournaments and realized I just play the same way but with wolf
I learned the value of camping for Yink. He is my main, and just like Sonix, I thought that camping was super lame, and I wanted people to see that Yink could be different. However I kept loosing so I still say I play aggressive, but I play more defensive than I used to.
Damn I was definitely one the people who didn’t like how Sonix played and I main Sonic but seeing from his pov I understand now. Also props to him it takes a lot to play like the way he does and control his character well because I get too aggressive and start doing dumb shit to the point it puts me in a bad spot.
Great video! Thank don’t think he camps particularly, I feel he usually approaches in the matches where it’s “campy”. All those good manners and the respectfulness… he’s clearly an undercover super villain
honestly, the camping isn't even what is annoying to me with sonic, it's how his moves sound (like a high pitched whine, hurts my ears lol) and how repetitive it feels to fight him due to the nature of his moves being half ball/spin, if sonic was more visually interesting people wouldn't mind him as much imo
It’s like the modern day Hungrybox situation, got so much hate till they threw that crab at him then it slowly died down (the emp vid also helped) now it’s sonix till they made that meme. Sonic (the character) still gunna get hate cuz people still complain he’s boring to watch fight, just like jigs still gets hate for the the same reason Long story short you join a tournament to win AT ALL COST not to please the spectators, they ain’t paying his bills
Een with the comments here supporting Sonix, I wouldn't be surprised if the newest Smash video with Sonix in it still has hate against him. People will just be like that.
I definitely think Ultimate could use more wholesome content like this. I actually prefer to fight Sonic over a lot of other "hype" characters. The approach of various dashes, spins, and movement isn't any worse than characters spamming things like fair/nair or fishing for down-throw combos. If the game got a bit more lame in the future (and/or more neutral), I could get into that.
Anyone else remember when Dabuz was hated? Because I sure do. It will be an extremely slow burn, but I'm glad to see that people are finally starting to separate their hate for the character from the player.
He's top 5 for me. It's not always exciting but I would rather someone play optimally in a competition. It may be a game but at the end of the day winning feels good
I've NEVER understood the people who defend Ken and crack down on sonix. Again, as mentioned in the video, I don't think people watch the videos they comment on in many cases and I think that's contributed to the overall bad reception sonix has gotten but more so, I just don't like the hypocrisy. Ken, great guy personality wise, has got to be one of THEE campiest players in ultimate and that says a lot that I'm not the biggest fan because I love Dabuz' "Stone wall agression" and Sonix' "mental wall fortitude" where they have a similar mindset of stalling a match albeit through different means. Ken just never seems to aggress even when the opportunity presents itself like he's constantly playing for time and that's his win condition but he gets people that back him up and say that sonix is just worse. Why???
He set out to be different and ended up being the worst. I do enjoy him as a villain and I think he enhances a lot of matches just by being there and playing so scummy. As i've said before, I hate watching him play, but I love seeing him lose.
Sonix seems like a real cool dude, but man does he have to pursue such a degenerate strategy? Like sure you're winning but at what cost? Can't imagine it's very fun...and as the goat Reggie once said "If the game isn't fun, why bother?"
I will always hold the opinion that slower playere (Hbox, Sonix, M2K) are playing optimally. You are trying to win, slow neutral-based play is highly consistent and effective so why not utilise it?

Sonix of all Sonic players deserves true respect. He actually acts like Sonic and wants matches to end as soon as possible. He can join the dark side sure, but rarely and the camping can be stopped. In truth, he wants to win properly. He doesn't camp exactly like the other players and waste time, which is exactly what Sonic hates.
Sonix is my favorite player on ult, what a goat, he plays how he has to play and when he interacts he’s EXPLOSIVE, hope people can grow up a bit and see he’s great.
Albert Einsten said: "Don't hate the player, hate the character"
I would never send hate messeges to a player I hate watching. I just watch something else until the set is over. I refuse to watch sets that go over 30 minutes that arent grand final resets.
FUN LARRY FACT: Surprisingly, Larry was actually sponsored by a university in his last video! (Southern New Hampshire University)
Wyn surprisingly? Larry educating us in being upstanding members of society 😤
Sonix's mentality early on of wanting to be aggressive and different to change perception of his character is almost verbatim what I said while picking up Samus. I guess I now know if I want to win to further develop my mentality to do what I need to instead of just "cool" things
6:02 Poor KEN keeps catching strays 😭
I love KEN but damn that man wants to win 😭
Great interview! I can definitely agree that one meme changed my whole outlook which makes no sense lol.
This is kinda like Leffen in Melee when he complained about Hungrybox camping in the air and said there should be an air limit
The funniest thing 😂.
I just dont understand why spin dash crosses up thro shield. It should stop like fox illusion when it hits shield
It’s hilarious the power that copy pastas have on the general feel of players, copy pastas absolutely transformed Dabuz’s public image
You know watching this made me realized they are not the villain watching them talk about this type of shit made him look more human i never hated him because lets face it i dont know him but iv hated a fair share of players and watching interviews whit them just made that go away knowing that they are doing what they enjoy
absolutely killing it. Finally some honest, quality content in the smash ult community
Before i clicked on this vid the first thought i had was sonix, at first when i watched for the first time people were just hating on him and so i followed the herd and hated too but the more sets i watch of sonix the more found out that this player is cool and he brings out the full potential of this character
Sonix is literally senator Armstrong of the smash community, the villain but people love him because of the memes
He went from a villain to a troll with literally one picture
Larry is the type of guy to be absolutely loved by the community and also become a meme
Another thing that helps is when people do fun things during the campy matches like Coney’s stream where he’ll speedrun Mario 64 during campy sets. Small things like that can help people digest slow gameplay
Sonix deserves love for how kind he is. He has a great mentality. I wish I was as patient as he is.
Even if you hate Sonix you have to admit that hes an amazing player and being able to play as he does for so long takes massive skill and endurance. I know a lot people find his gameplay boring, I love more neutral focused gameplay, which is why I love Smash 64
Also Coney doing a SM64 speed run during long Sonix sets is hilarious
Uh oh, this person thinks "running away" is the same as "neutral"
@@jeffersonian4 I’m not saying he isn’t running away, he just plays neutral that way and I think it’s interesting to see how players adapt to that
Lol same happened to Dabuz in 4. Certain man just spew out all their hate against someone for their main or playstyle, but the moment the memes start it's "oh nah lol he funny af" - they just magically become liked. If you can just switch attitudes like that did you ever really dislike him? Or are you just naturally spiteful?
also the addition of Steve lower the hate factor for sonic in general.
Nah I think I see less hate in Steve than sonic, even now
Honestly for every character. Ppl would go feral over minmin until Steve started to well 💀
“ I know y’all are mad that i’m winning, like, hold that “
"How the most loved smash player became even loved more through memes"
This will be a video on Larry Lurr
I like how when you mention that players could still be nice there's a clip with Pink Fresh playing lol
This is how Sonic stayed alive in the general industry
Sonix just proved himself you can’t deny his skill
(After getting the stock lead) “She’s a runner she’s a trackstar”
Another player who has really turned round his reputation is Dabuz. There's a lot more Dalove than there used to be.
Bro imagine Dabuz and Sonix teaming.
I was making a joke but now I'm low-key curious as to how it work
Sonix is the villain of ultimate and I love it. He knows people hate Sonic and his play style for some reason and he braces it! I hope he keeps going
It’s crazy to see how something so small can change peoples minds
Good thing to know that memes will always bring us together
This guy even be stalling out his conversations
I wish you’d ask him about match ups in general and just get his perspective on the game but I love these interviews larry keep it up!
Reminds me of chudat YAYUHHZ memes with iceclimbers
Great video! Thank don’t think he camps particularly, I feel he usually approaches in the matches where it’s “campy”.
All those good manners and the respectfulness… he’s clearly an undercover super villain
great video, sonix is a guy who I always enjoy watching playing and overall the dude is a great guy
I'm still laughing that someone said Sonix wood time out his mom
I love watching Sonix play.
awesome video!!! love it
Nah it’s boring to watch timeouts.. don’t try to make cool because ultimately you wouldn’t want to fight with someone as that on elite
People are coming around to the fact that time outs are very funny.
honestly, the camping isn't even what is annoying to me with sonic, it's how his moves sound (like a high pitched whine, hurts my ears lol) and how repetitive it feels to fight him due to the nature of his moves being half ball/spin, if sonic was more visually interesting people wouldn't mind him as much imo
Percent lead? You know how this ends 🤣🔚🔥💯😭🥶
It’s like the modern day Hungrybox situation, got so much hate till they threw that crab at him then it slowly died down (the emp vid also helped) now it’s sonix till they made that meme. Sonic (the character) still gunna get hate cuz people still complain he’s boring to watch fight, just like jigs still gets hate for the the same reason
Long story short you join a tournament to win AT ALL COST not to please the spectators, they ain’t paying his bills
Loved? Where? All Sonic mains are hexed on social media platforms
Good interview larry
DeDe after the set with sonic is my new favorite player.
We need memes for Acola now
Een with the comments here supporting Sonix, I wouldn't be surprised if the newest Smash video with Sonix in it still has hate against him. People will just be like that.
You know the vibes 😎
I definitely think Ultimate could use more wholesome content like this. I actually prefer to fight Sonic over a lot of other "hype" characters. The approach of various dashes, spins, and movement isn't any worse than characters spamming things like fair/nair or fishing for down-throw combos. If the game got a bit more lame in the future (and/or more neutral), I could get into that.
percent lead? you know how this ends 🏃♂️💨⏰
I didn't know about the memes. Now that I do, I like him less.
sonix is super omega chill
I still hold him in contempt for his playstyle, no reason to respect him for skills i don't value.
Nice vid! Could you rewatch the Bocchi thing?
I would like to hear your thoughts about the whole story of her.
Who is bocchi?
@@illford it was an top isabelle main, which was bullied cause of her win against mvd (at this time best snake).
clockwork gaming is my favorite sonic player
Sonix isn’t loved lol. His memes are but he himself isn’t. This video should’ve been about Dabuz
Known to you the vibes are
Anyone else remember when Dabuz was hated? Because I sure do. It will be an extremely slow burn, but I'm glad to see that people are finally starting to separate their hate for the character from the player.
Sonix is top 5 personality-wise, playstyle-wise on the other hand…
He's top 5 for me. It's not always exciting but I would rather someone play optimally in a competition. It may be a game but at the end of the day winning feels good
Look at Dabuz. It’s the same story
Why???
SONIX it's Just the best 😎❤
Matchup is unwinnable, give up
He set out to be different and ended up being the worst. I do enjoy him as a villain and I think he enhances a lot of matches just by being there and playing so scummy. As i've said before, I hate watching him play, but I love seeing him lose.
The match up is Unwinnable Give up 😎🔵💨
Sonix seems like a real cool dude, but man does he have to pursue such a degenerate strategy? Like sure you're winning but at what cost? Can't imagine it's very fun...and as the goat Reggie once said "If the game isn't fun, why bother?"
Why hate sonic when you can hate Steve?
Got you with the like and comment bro 👍
I'd rather watch a fighting game have fighting, not a skewed game of tag honestly.
Seeing DeeDee time out sonic was so satisfying. I don't hate sonix but what's the point of playing like that lol
he already explained why
I will always hold the opinion that slower playere (Hbox, Sonix, M2K) are playing optimally. You are trying to win, slow neutral-based play is highly consistent and effective so why not utilise it?
Ima be real with you lurr, people who dislike him are laughing at him. The people who you are talking about, are neutral: laughing with him.
