  • Here I talk about research that was published this year (2021) that compared TCTSY (Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga) to cognitive processing therapy for treatment of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The results showed that TCTSY was just as effective at reducing symptoms of PTSD. However, drop-out rates were lower for TCTSY therapy, this means a larger proportion of people were able to find benefit with TCTSY.

Hi Kathie, I just found your youtube videos and website... and it is very timely, as I unpack my own complex trauma / or rather, it unpacks me. Do you run your ten week course across the year? And also, are you baed in New Zealand as well?

      Hi Laura,
      Thanks for getting in touch.
Currently I'm not running the 10 week course because I'm focusing on one-on-one work.
I'm based in Australia at the moment. But originally from NZ.
I'm glad you found this helpful.

If trauma symptoms get worse before they get better, how does someone know if they are making progress and not just making things worse? It's something that confuses me in my own journey

That's such a good point! I would refer to your therapist- they would know more about your symptoms and progression of treatment.

Hi, Dr. Overeem- What is the most effective form of therapy for C-PTSD? I have both developmental C-PTSD and a medical trauma that was chronic in nature. Is yoga effective for these types of chronic traumas and can you tell me what somatic talk therapies are most effective for C-PTSD? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks very much!

Hi Michael, thanks for your question. There is research showing the TCTSY (Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga) is beneficial for complex-PTSD stemming from childhood interpersonal trauma- I'll add a link below. But that's not to say that people with other trauma histories wouldn't find TCTSY helpful! I've had clients with all sorts of trauma histories, some have found TCTSY beneficial while others didn't feel it was the right fit for them at the time. If TCTSY is something you are interested in trying you could look to see if there is a certified facilitator in your area. I'll add a link for that too. Thanks!

@@kathieovereemphd1705 Thanks very much for the information. I appreciate the links! Other than TCTSY is there a particular form of therapy that is more appropriate for C-PTSD than others (e.g., EMDR, SE, etc)? I think I'd like to try both TCTSY and a somatic based talk therapy. Thanks.

@@ethers Hi Michael, I think this would be something best discussed with your psychologist. Someone who knows your history and symptoms would be better able to offer insight into what type of therapy could be best for you.
