There's a debate going on in the world You know there is a title a master Wood carver and it's somewhat debatable What is it what is the master would if you google it like a master Woodcarver you're going to get a lot of different search results and especially on UA-cam you can get a lot of different results there are people calling Some other people a master wood carvers our master Carver's but when you look at the work you kind of wonder what do you Mean by master wood carver Like you know there's a title master wood carver in the Europe, its European title and it's a really honorable title I master wood-carver, but I still have a question what is a true master wood carver what is it do you have an answer, for example, you have to be born in England and get the process like a seven years under master apprenticeship are you born in different parts of the world and there is no such a thing as seven years must have apprenticed shape but There are a lot of talented people in the world and them no fewer professionals than some people call themselves as a masters I saw some really unique pieces Of carved art made by different people in different parts of the world, but they don't have a title nobody's giving them a title as a master are they, masters. Absolutely! The title is not when somebody is actually giving you that title to be a master you have to know your trade is going to take the veto so you have to know how to use tools and of course it's not necessarily the only way like for example I'm carving wood and that's not the only way it's supposed to be carved that if you know how to poke a chisel in the wood and make the really nice results you already master woodcarver. In New Zealand wood carving has a cultural place for the Maori people .
A master carver is another word for teacher.
Traditionally in England a master carver would have been an accomplished craftsman who had risen to the level of employing others under his banner. Look no further than Michaelangelo who employed a number of helpers in the roughing out stages. Prolificacy depended upon not doing the bulk of the heavy work yourself but rather overseeing it's progress. Multiple projects could then be carried out and be at various stages at the same time, ensuring the master had time to work on the latter stages of each piece personally. It would also ensure that your hands and back weren't ruined within a number of years.

Well said the term master in my culture we say tohunga which means expert so we have tohunga whakairo which means expert caver to gain this title it's about the carvings you produce yes we have schools that you can attend to learn this art and receive a title master caver but I'm the end like you said if you can use the tools to make your work speak for its self
I'd say a master will not only use correct tools, properly, to the task and type of wood he is carving into, but can also create his/her own tools necessary to accomplish any particular difficulty to be overcome in completing his/her objective.

I would say that there are many levels to learn in your own culture no matter where you come from, to be given the title of master, but doesn't mean to say that you can't carve in another cultural style without having learnt all the aspects of the traditions that go with it. Leonardo and Michael Angelo were obviously masters of their style and tradition but these days there are many that can equal or better them without even having been trained by them, or even from the same culture as them. Just owning all those fancy tools and plenty of money doesn't make you a master of your style and culture but if you were to create something that no one else at the time could repeat or copy that was so magnificent you would probably be given the title of master, although many carvers do such art works but think of it as exactly that, and no title such as master should be taken. In some cultures such a title can only be accepted if the student has surpassed the teacher, then the teacher has earned the right. Its a great subject to ponder and to consider all the aspects of the work, from felling the tree in the forest to milling, conservation, planning, concept design, time management, equipment, up to the final finished peice. I guess every carver can be unique but to call yourself a master is just vanity.
“Master wood carver” is just a word, used to determine someone as an expert that knows a lot about how to carve wood, ANY TYPE OF WOOD, and know how to make their own gauges, etc....SADDLY some get a big ego cause of it, , I rather be call just a wood carver, n keep it simple...n try to learn something new everyday, I have seen some super talented wood carvers from Indonesia the hold their wood with their bare feet, n the same in Africa n Latino America, have a few gauges and their work is AMAIZING, it is a silly assumption “if you have to be born in the UK to be a “master” wood carver, some wood carvers proclaim themselves as “ masters”, lets not forget that humbleness is part of the craft as well.....

I typically divide Skill Levels into 4 groups.
Level 1 (Novice) - Unconscious Incompetence - task is entirely new, no foundation for learning - unable to perform, requires direct supervision and explanation, has no basis for asking relevant questions - does not know when errors occur
Level 2 (Apprentice) - Conscious Incompetence - minimal familiarity with task, can learn with direct instruction - can perform with frequent assistance - develops general, non-specific questions - recognizes errors but cannot independently resolve, incapable of collaboration with others
Level 3 (Journeyman) - Conscious Competence - understands all major aspects of task, recognizes that task impacts other processes but may not understand how, learns easily with practice and reference material, capable of independent work with occasional assistance, asks probing questions to discern finely detailed differences - independently recognizes and resolves errors, collaborates well with others
Level 4 (Master) - Unconscious Competence - fully comprehends all aspects of tasks and relationships to other processes, reaches technical limit of processes, tools and materials, focus is on evaluating and instructing others in task performance and developing advanced techniques and applications, asks questions for which there are no external answers, can lead collaborative teams

Ho Ayelen, I am Using Basswood (Linden Wood ) also known in Europe as Limewood. It is the same wood used in palaces in Great Britain by Grinling Gibbons.
I would consider a master as someone who has reached the level of being able to consistently create projects to an expected level and standard of quality. A true master artist however, is not just technical excellence but also the ability to infuse some of their personality and character into the work and create a unique style. In the truest one should be able to look at a piece and anyone who is familiar with the artist's work should be able to recognize and tell who the artist is. Obviously if you are not familiar with a certain artist's work this won't really happen but there should be a signature feel and style to the work that is relayed to the viewer or audience.
There is a difference between a guild master (from what I think you mean about the British master, could be wrong) and someone skilled enough to be considered to be a master. From what I gather part of the training for guild mastery will involve passing on skills to apprentices and getting them to journeyman level. I guess its the same with all crafts from knife making to engraving and the like.
What he was referring to was just an analogy not to be taken out of context. Just in generalization terms.
Here on Balkan some people bye CNC machine and they consider themselves a carvers... that is a step further :’) Привет!

I feel this way when society accepts 'picasso's' art as something of a master, but i feel otherwise. There is a saying of old from an 'old book' in where 'You shall know them by the fruits that they bare'... Alexander, i will not tell you what you want to hear!.. In saying that, 'YOU ARE A MASTER!!!'.... The fruits of your bearing are masterful and one of a kind!

Hello i love your style of carving.this is something id like to tackle nxt.im self taught.about 20yrs.but i still consider myself as learning.and i like that.one of my dreams was to try chainsaw carving.after asking my husband i got one .then i git sick an ended up in a wheelchair.but it hasnt stopped me.chisel carving.
I waa looking thru utube and saw the beautiful work you do.and id love to be able to carve like this.do you have any videos on step by step how to carve in this style.many thanks brigitte lamb

you know i disagree with you buddy . im not a master wood carver but i think your idea that a master wood carver has to be born in england is bullocks . i know alot of wood carvers in my time that were most definitely not from england that were outstanding masters at there art . and would give any english wood carver a run for there money . i have watched this video to this point twice now and leave right after you say that . now im not being mean or trying to pick a fight but i disagree . a master wood carver is a wood carver who can produce what ever is asked of them with in reason and can carve projects that blow peoples mind . in most cases things most people take for granted and can reproduce them if need be . it has nothing to do with where you are born . with that being said wish you all the best . 2:10

@@Grabovetskiy ok well im big enough to know when i am wrong then buddy . im sorry for what i said . carving is a passion of mine and well wood workers should stick together . if we see one struggle we should try to help them with there problem . if we see one being put down we should stand up for them . i think there is enough secret boys clubs where only the best of the best are allowed to visit . wood carving should be encouraged and shared with people . if you look on youtube the master carving classes suck . you learn more from the people who are just starting out then the so called masters whose idea of a master class is showing pictures of what they can do and never showing how to do it . so i blew my top when i heard you say you had to be born in england and study under a master carver . to become a master carver . and i admit i shut you down at that point . so i apologize and should have gave you a chance to explain your self . i will take the time to watch the rest of the video . and i do wish you well .
