100% right !!!!! Frank Brennan is the best fighter the shotokan style ever gave so far. Perfect timing , speed , and using left and right side with perfect accuracy .
Seems like you’re stuck on the name Frank. So here’s a Frank to think on - Frank Smith, of Southern California. His Sensei, by the name of Nishiyama, severely limited his competing, why I don’t know. But Frank Smith, when he was permitted to compete, totally dominated US championships through the middle 60s and beyond. I still wear some scars from Frank.
@@williamtetrault1300 US shotokan very very low level in comparison with Europe. I'll check this Frank Smith who he is . As regarding Hidetaka Nishiyama his so called traditional karate is so rigid and stiff nothing to compare with enoeda , shirai or taiji Kase . So Brennan totally different breed. Also South Africa had excellent fighters in shotokan
Some great examples of real fighters here. The one that stood out for me in both Kata & Kumite was Yahara Sensei. He had that rare ability to surprise with sparring & his kata could be mesmerising.
The forward pressure and footwork in Shotokan is lightening fast and incredibly impressive. No wonder it has found its way into MMA. Its disruptive capability is a force to be reckoned with.
I took shotokan karate reason I stopped because of the pandemic I was busy doing kendo, akido , and judo so I couldn't do everything plus I'm getting promoted to 6th kyu but I still like shotokan karate.

My only issue is we don't know how good they actually are under pressure until they take a real hit. I'd like to see them under full contact rules but their form and footwork is excellent!
Yahara proved himself in the street, trust me, he had a personal bodyguard company and had to take on over 30 Yakuza who wanted to shut him down, he earned their respect after annihilating all comers.
Even in todays WKF competiton you take real hits from time to time. The thing this competition format really lacks, is chaining hard hit combos together. Back then, hard hits were more frequent. As was being a judo player in japan also... .
@@khamariblair4898 We don't have to play this game with the common " street fighter" nonsense. " Real confrontation" is a very wide field and often the tougher opponents wait on the mat and in the ring. (Hard trained fighters with genetics above average). Great examples - but these are not "fighters". Nor are they shown fighting in this video. They are point-sparring competitors participating in point-based tournaments. The instances where full contact blows are landed are completely unnecessary and usually result in disqualification.
Frank B. No way. He’s good for a Caucasian but no way is he in the top five. I am a 2 Dan and I’ve been around the world 9× and 45 countries And trained in Japan As well as 20 other countries. Whoever chose these top five must be a friend of Frank’s or a student Of his. The other four Japanese are excellent .
You can't expect from a style that has discarded protective gear to employ full-contact blows ! The use of thick gloves and chest-protection, like in Kick-boxing and Tae Kwon Do detract a lot of essense, as compared to the (brutal) realism. In the broad sense of meaning all the fighting methods are point-sparring. In my opinion, a combination of high-tech protective gear and semi-contact rules of behaviour may be the best way to recreate realism in the future. A fithing environment that allows even (filtered) hits to the sensitive points like the solar-plexus, the throat and the private parts,, all protected by state-of-the-art lightweight materials, in combination with semi-control, whenever those targets are concerned, can be qualified as the closest approximation towards realism. And of course the points awarded system observed by the referees should be devised in consultation with medical experts.
So what is your definition of fighting? Two house wives arguing over a fence? Two drunks wrestling in the street? Two boxers in a ring? An exchange of gun fire in World War 2? I'd like to know what your definition of "fighting" is

Shotokan makes you tough, agree, practiced that for years 24/7 (no kidding), a few other styles make you much faster and MUCH more effective. Say you gain 40% speed and power, in 6 months.
