In Changning, which is about more than an hour's drive away from my home, there’re several forest bases dedicated to growing herbs. I took the car that went down from the base to shop for groceries to the top of the mountain. In the mountains in June, it started to rain, and I shivered with cold. The dendrobiums that live on the pine trees produce flowers of various colors. In the field, there’re paris and polygonatum that have grown for six or seven years, and also the incredible glossy ganoderma that looks like a fake. I picked some of them. Since herbs and food are of the same source, people in rural areas often stew soup or make wine with herbs. I'm not sure if they're actually medicinal, but we eat some all year round!

The reason why Pen Ji is "really cool" is because she is uber- hardworking.
If anyone is looking for more information on these plants: dendrobium is a genus of orchids, and many of them are popular as ornamental plants. I couldn't find this exact species, since there are over 1,800 of them, and quite a few of them are used in Chinese medicine (edit: it does look like dendrobium crepidatum, thank you kohaisaga)! The second one is probably Paris polyphylla, which is part of the trillium family. It should be used carefully, since it can be poisonous in high doses. Polygonatum is known in English as Solomon's seal, and different species of it can be found around the Northern Hemisphere. Finally, glossy ganoderma is usually known as reishi, and it's commonly used as a dietary supplement all over the world!

If I see it from the shape of the leaf (long and skinny), I think it might be Dendrobium crepidatum. They`re also found in China.

Yes, A Hao is a striking young man. He also is very modest, like Pen Ji.
He lovingly told Pen Ji to wear more clothes going to the mountains for herbs;
A Hao was correct since it was a bit chilly, but luckily Pen Ji has a strong constitution.

I see orchids everywhere in the Viet Buddhist temple I attend. I didn't think of orchids as medicinal, but ALL food is medicine. @@Ellie-xi7rr they are living in this way in yunnan province. Not all Chinese citizens are involved with political stuffs as long as they have a stable domestic life. This is also why China needs to become strong to protect their people and culture not being invaded and looted as they suffered around 90 year ago.

Yunan province is very fertile and locals get to have bountiful harvest and a wide variety of fruits, veggies, and fungi for use. I also love the teas that come from Yunnan! Hope to visit someday!
