    Sir, this is by far one of the best explanations of the differences between the main formats (you missed the mft, but all your general considerations are valid for it as well).

    Once I heard about the a6700, I knew it was going to be a special camera, and it is. Anyone using it will realize they don't need a FF camera body, many FF lenses and a lot of money. The lenses for aps-c from Sigma, Tamron, Viltrox and many others are much cheaper, price wise, than FF lenses. And the aps-c body has the benefit of using FF lens to great effect. It's all there.
    Thanks for making a very clear presentation of the two formats. This is highly recommended for those just getting into photography.
    BTW, I had fun with medium format cameras decades ago. Lots of fun but nowhere as much fun as 35mm film cameras.

      I’m a working small time pro… and my second body is a 5100! And get this- I use my Zeiss 85 full frame on it most of the time, because I use a zoom on my main body for more flexibility, but then have that Zeiss ready when it fits the subject, and yes, it’s worth every penny. That said, in my experience, is full frame worth it? Yes. It’s just better, the headroom and depth of field capabilities do matter to me. And yes if you’re never going to go full frame, don’t bother with ff lenses, there are many excellent crop lenses out there. But for an aspiring pro, crop bodies are fine to start with, but building a bag of full frame lenses is a good idea. The best crop lenses aren’t exactly cheap! Also, buy all bodies and lenses used, period. ;)

      Apsc is not a problem. It's perfectly fine for most situations, but let's be honest - you need to use great light lenses. But also on FF :) I have a6700 and a7 IV and 1.4 GM lenses, then I have great outputs from both cameras without difference.

  • @iammz81
    @iammz81 8 місяців тому +8

    So at the end Full Frame has more background blur and better low light performance compared to APS-C, however with some tricks you can emulate the look of FF on an APS-C camera. I know cause I have used an APS-C camera and now I own a FF camera and it's just easier to work with. Not saying the quality of the images are 10 times better as I was the one using the APS-C camera as well. :) But FF has maybe a bit more advantages.

    I really enjoyed every second of this video. You really hit a couple of nails wich are currently a subject of debate within the photography community. Right now i'm using a Sony A6700 and i can clearly notice some differences with my older generation A6000 camera. It's clear that the gap between a 26mp APS-C and a 33mp Full Frame are getting smaller. And now with the super resolution switch within Adobe Lightroom you can get even more stunning results. Of course i also would like to have a Full Frame camera in the future. But my Sony A6700 is solid ground for now.

    bro... You single handedly saved me a ton of money. I currently have a Sony A6400, and was looking into a full frame under the impression that the pixels mattered so much more than on an APS-C. Your video explained what no other video I've found could explain so well and in great detail without being too complicated to understand. Instead of buying a Sony full frame, I may just look into purchasing the A6700 and upgrading from my current A6400.
    It makes so much more sense now just to stick with an APS-C camera over going full frame, unless maybe I'm wrong? I'm so used to shooting with this camera and I've shot several air shows and concerts with great success. Now it doesn't seem like switching to a full frame camera would really benefit me in any way, correct me if I'm wrong. But I feel like the A6700 could fit my needs far better than going full frame since it's a sensor size I've grown very familiar with. I also have several lenses and a Sony G 70-300 lens that was made for the APS-C sensors.
    Do you think it's best for me to stick with them, or get a full frame?

    • @erwinmarionneaux
      @erwinmarionneaux  2 місяці тому +1

      Sounds like apsc is a great fit for you! Your 70-300 has the reach of a 105-450mm so if you switched to full frame, you’d have to get the 100-400 just to do what you’re already able to do.

    Quality to price APSC wins everytime. You usually pay double for full frame but the quality doesnt double you just capture a slightly wider angle. Body and lenses cost a lot more. My 20mm full frame lens was $650. My apsc 10-25mm was $50.... Quality is basically the same with good light. I shot my shoe collection videos with both. Some of my shoe videos were shot in apsc and some on full frame. I know no one knows which ones are which lol. I just framed them the same by moving back. Im glad you brought up the "low light" morons, well add some light dum dum lol. We all do it in pro shoots we add light and use flash lol.

I thought that maybe a 24mm on full frame would see more natural than using maybe a 13mm on aps c , but watching at 9:31 i can not see a difference. could you tell what focal lenght are you using for both cameras? • @erwinmarionneaux

      Nope, it’ll have the field of view of a 45mm. An apsc lens is just smaller because it can ONLY cover the apsc sensor. Using a full frame 30mm would be bigger because it can cover a full frame sensor. So same result either way

    I don't remember hearing full frame vs cropped frame being better in low light. It was always about the lens's F-stop.
    I'm still stuck on moving up to a full frame. I think only thing I'll be seeing a benefit is at a bday party getting large groups or not standing so far back when taking photos of a ferriswheel. lol

    • @erwinmarionneaux
      @erwinmarionneaux  2 місяці тому

      With all specs and settings equal, one of the biggest advantages of full frame is being noticeably better in low light. That doesn’t mean apsc always means bad in low light, but it typically takes a lower f stop on a crop sensor to makeup for the smaller sensor. Thats why cellphones suck in low light even though they have low f stop lenses

  • @brugj03
    @brugj03 2 місяці тому

    The difference between those 2 cameras in low light noise is about 1 and a half stop.
    That`s quite a difference. The fullframe also has more than a stop more dynamic range. That`s nice to have.
    I think the native fullframe lenses for sony are allmost always better than the crop version.

    • @erwinmarionneaux
      @erwinmarionneaux  2 місяці тому

      That extra stop or so of light can definitely come in handy for those who find themselves in those situations, but I’d say they both have much more dynamic range than most scenes require. So for someone who isn’t shooting in really low light environments often or isn’t shooting extremely high dynamic range scenes, they’d never notice those differences

    Many thanks. I understand that full frame can be better for wedding, concert, portrait and astrophotography specially for professionals but for me as a amateuer photographer the aps-c fullfills all my needs for cheaper price. Besides its lighter and smaller, too. I startet with a used A6000 with kit-lens for 260 EUR. Step by step I bought good lenses and switched to the A6400. The day will come an I get a A6700. But for now I can do all the things I want to do, landscape, cityscape (at night), milky way, macro, some portraits (therefore I have 1.4 primes). For me it´s the complete right decison I get bothering I someone tells me that if I would only one time use a fullframe, I would never look back. My experience shows me that this people instead of work on their creativity would prefer to buy better gear, or they think, that a picture is only good if you can zoom in 200% an alls ist razorsharp. Other think that only a big bokeh is the measure for good photo. They shoot their cat or dog but sharp is ony everything until the ears. Can be a good photo, but not every time. You named it, the "full frame look". So I´m happy if someone who works with both systems is telling the truth. There are advantages and disadvantes of both systems, but to be honest, in the most cases a aps-c would be enough for the most amateuer photographers if the reasons are not the better ev or the bigger or more buttons. But it does not care me what the reasons of other photographers are, I´m totally ok with it.

    My biggest price of advice is aps-c struggles a bit even in semi low light. You need a light bar or pannel even in golden hour sometime with apsc whereas with full frame you do not. Only big downfall for apsc and I know you can get a nifty 50 with a f1.2 but what happens when you don't want extreme bokeh in every picture? You buy a full frame...
    Also.... Yeah high megapixel cameras have more noise but it's only when you pixle peep, but the high megapixel camera has a clearer image and still has the benefit of handeling low light better regardless. There's a video breaking that down saying it's a myth. A7s vs a7r noise

      There must be something else wrong. The differences between low light capabilities of FF vs APS-C is about 1-2 stops of light. Choosing one aperture wider and doubling your Shutter speed (like 1/100 instead of 1/200) is enough to have the same low light image capabilities as a full frame sensor.

    In the "old" days we had 1/2 of 35mm ... The "cheap" 35mm shooting only half the frame ... There are plenty excellent old film cams like that ... And yeah great comparison! Thanks. All the APS-C bashers should watch your vid.

    This video just put all my decisions to rest. I was gonna hop in the full frame boat but I’ll start and stick with apsc. More for the money and very similar quality, plus there’s a ton of people making awesome content with apsc. Great video and explanation

    Very well explained. I do feel like we ask for a lot of stuff in these cameras that we don't need or don't want to actually do the work to make the cameras look and work the way they need. I've watched movies with grain in the shadows, we also want the best Autofocus and we want excellent ibis but, most of the big expensive cameras don't have ibis and constant auto focus or auto focus at all . I feel we are chasing perfection when the best movies and photos were made with imperfections on purpose because it gives character to the images. This allows them to stand out.

    Most videos fail completely to mention the sensor material, you touch on it - good, but that deserved 50% of your time not 30 seconds. good explanation for beginners, ( that's a complement)

    Thank you for such a simplistic explanation of sensors. I was almost completely convinced that I needed a full frame camera. I did not want to dish out that kind of coin at this point. I really think APS-C may be the way to go for my needs. Thanks again.

    I’ve never been on this channel, but man oh man this was hilarious! I got what I came for, excellent explanation with actual facts, and stayed for the examples that just kept making me laugh out loud. 😂 thanks for making this video. Now I am going to find me a basketball team so I have a reason to buy a bus!

    This was actually the best explanation I’ve seen. I especially like that you walked through every step of determining how much crop the photographer will see based on the measurements and how they defer between hardware types. Thank you so much. You did this like an engineer would explain a complex system, and I love it!
