Love the video. Here’s a little idea to play with: If I don’t want someone to pin my hip or leg to the floor, I will always have the ability to fight the pummelling gaming with 2 feet. Most people let the passer pin 1 leg. Resulting in the guard player only having 1 leg to fight with momentarily. So that clip of be inverting through was more so a result of me not allowing my opponent to pin 1 of my legs.
bro, never stop using that song with the piano and the claps and the twinkly chimes. starts at 8:20. i've really started to connect it to your channel in my mind and it also reminds me of the star map in mass effect lol
Oh, man, I wish this was a big project and I could leave my job to be a full time developer there. I've been years thinking of a dev project for our community and never made it. I'm glad someone did!
Awesome vid. I've been playing with this game for a long time and I always struggle with guys that stay loose refuse to engage until they scream around guard. This has highlighted a bunch of things I can work with . Awesome.
Great video The foot to the outside (on the far hip while you are supine, what you noticing they are getting to from the low leg) is called “Keymaster”. Langaker and Espen use it a lot
Nice vid as always man! I could be wrong but I think the "low leg" position you talked about is quite similar to a move Tommy Langaker uses called the "keymaster" if you wanna check it out. He uses it to enter kguard/matrix :)
I believe the guard passing will get so good that bjj will evolve into who can get top game and the guards will he more just transitional positions to try to sweep or get on top. The more bjj gets popular and the more athletic guys start coming into the sport the top games of the athletic guys will get so rough and explosive most guys wont be able to operate on the bottom. Athleticism will change the game.
03:19 something that I think should be mentioned Gordon does not like this grip from a butterfly half guard because it exposes you to the Darce. The same is not true in regular half guard because you can time it and counter with a knee lever. I will assume it is also fine to use it from a full butterfly like Giancarlo did here
Yeah I think because the second hook would let you sweep them towards the side you would ordinarily knee lever, so it's ok. So I suppose a weakness of butterfly half is that it lacks that sweeping direction.
Awesome video analysis once again Jake !!! I would like to add also another type of frame that Diego pato uses (we trained for almost a Week together and was an eye opening frame for my guard retention ) he is side ways one leg straight other leg bent in chest and his arm , elbow inside that bent leg so everytime someone tries to control or pas the leg he has to deal with arm frame and vice versa . I can post it for you if you like! By the way the self frame has been used Initially I believe by Rafa mendes where he taught that in the AOJ initial platform many years ago and to this day you see him doing it all the time
Right on with the mendes bros. I train at a place in Minneapolis that looks at a lot of AOJ stuff and we worked on this self frame for a whole week not too long ago. It’s tricky to incorporate. But that’s why it’s ‘high level’ right. We litetallt took a whole week looking at this concept 4 classes per day, for 6 days. Love how my intructor goes deep on the details like this.
How much footage did you search through to find the self frame in action which makes it easier to be stacked. Your ability find appropriate footage blows my mind. Keep up the amazing work
Right now the database has about 300 matches that I have annotated so I just search "self frame" and the matches come up which makes it easy. As this database develops and more people can enter data, I think it will just get easier Thanks for the love my man!
Great content! Thanks for the work you put into these videos. As a white belt, these videos have done wonders for developing my own game. Much appreciated!
Interested in your analysis of the Half-Granby type retention / realignment. I'm talking about that motion that is usually taught as the way to return to Guard from Turtle, but against Stack-Passes and Loose-Passes. It see's a lot of use, but rarely get's talked about.
I have seen Gordon's turtle defense instructional but have not studied much. He talks about it a bit in there. If I remember correctly he emphasizes the control they have over your near shoulder. Basically if you try to do the granby when they have control over your near shoulder you are giving your back but if not then you should have success
If you have a foot inside to any flying attempt it’s extremely hard for the top player who’s jumping to get the attack they’re looking for since you use that leg inside to elevate and end up on top
Would be interesting to hear on Jozef Chen performance at ADCC Trails. He could beat all guys who trained way longer than him. I believe Tommy Langaker is black belt since 2017 and Oliver Taza since 2020 black belt. While Jozef began training just around 4 years ago and when Jozef stepped in mats Langaker was black belt and Taza was brown. That is completely crazy, don't you think?
@@LIMIBJJ There are couple of podcasts where Jozef disclosing his way to learn Jiu-jitsy that quick. You may listen to them, one is on Sonny Brown Breakdown and the second one is on BJJ Mental Models. There are some overlap between them in terms of content, however you could get at least one of them.
Can anyone help me find the video that goes over seated guard/half guard arm drags for the near and far side arm? I've searched everywhere, but I can't find it.
I dont get how self frames prevents you from getting forced to do exaggerated high/low leg. Maybe explain the mechanism of the self frame. Pls and thanks.
I taught the last 2 weeks focusing on these concepts, particularly self framing and protecting the near side hip pocket. Another option you didn't mention was using an elbow drop with your far arm when you can't self frame the near (passing side) leg. I saw Jason Scully teaching it in his 41 open guard moves video. Awesome stuff as always.
Fantastic content as usual. The whole 'self frame until you get a leg' concept is kind of mind blowing. Additionally: really love the Joseph Chen content, i rolled with him in Thailand a few months ago, and ive never felt so helpless / shit at bjj. He is the dark horse next up and coming goat

A good guard is a crucial part of anybody's game, but for showbiz... nobody wants to see one guy spin around on their back the whole match anymore. Thats what the popularity of ADCC has proved. To grow the sport, people want to see alpha male shit, & if you can be on your back for a bit & get a sub, then cool. Otherwise work to get top position & put on a more dynamic show.

You're a legend for taking the time to give context on this clip. Thanks 🙏
Great video as always, This is becoming one of the best BJJ UA-cam pages.
Much appreciated thank you!
Crazy how your bjj brain has grown over time
Thank you! Defiantly have come a long way! Thanks for being apart of the journey!
Great one. The head down head up different arm attacks from half is a gem

Geez man this is so good. I've watched that Lachlan match so often and I never checked the whole frame thing. Props.

Really interesting observation about the self framing, great content.
Thank you! Hopefully it helps with your guard retention!
This is really good, especially showing the frames, high leg vs low leg + guard entry options. It’s great to see it all tie together.
Yep yep thank you! I am glad you found it helpful!
Hell yeah! I've had so many problems with supine recently.. Have a hunch this will make a massive difference to my game. Cheers!

I would recommend studying Daniel Maira, Nick Salles, and Kirk Breneman to clear up some of your misconceptions about supine.
Interesting thank you for the recommendations!
