I can say this is probably the best filmed video l have seen of yours Richard. The music is a bit melancholy in parts but adds to a longing for things not purcived.
Another wonderful segment to Arthur's journey. Such a lovely church & church yard at Thakeham. Loved all the timber framed houses. That one w/ the intricately designed thatched roof!😍 Gorgeous!!! Such wonderfully interesting history on the Saxson road & surrounding history!!!👏👏👏
It is pouring with rain here in N. Carolina (the tail end of a tropical storm) so I sat with a cup of tea and watched this wonderful video and was transported back home to Sussex. Thanks Richard! ✈ 🌈
Epic vid Richard. Beautiful filming, bird song and background music. Also enjoying following along by reading the book thank you for including the link to download from. :)
Hello, Richard, have a nice day. Your introduction to film and background music are lovely. In addition to the place where you walked are wonderful, shadow of green trees and relaxing with birds cheeping.I am looking forward to the next episode. 👋
I'm enjoying this series very much. I visited Thakeham last August when we were staying at Warminghurst church so you have brought back some happy memories!! Thank you.
Richard, you wouldn't believe how long i've been trying to find this church on the maps. I lived for a short while on Sir Roberts Farm and we'd walk these lanes with the dogs every evening. There was a harvest flower festival in this church i remember visiting as a child. While looking I was convinced this church was down Peacock Lane, thank you for showing the map, i now realise where i was going wrong. Great video! Some lovely memories were spent here. Jen (Think i need to get a copy of this book to read too!)
Wonderful to see Thakeham again. Probably my favourite Sussex village. Great memories. Cumberland House is the residence of the late Stirling Moss' brother. Unfortunately he is not a fan of St Marys bells so my relationship with him when I was captain of the bellringers here was not a pleasant one unfortunately
Another great video! Re your point about the churches, I believe the C of E are looking to reopen churches for visits / private prayer at the next stage of reopening the country so maybe from June 1st?
My great grandmother was a nurse at the Thakeham Workhouse in 1911. I'm wondering if the brick building you mention as both the Duke of Cumberland Inn and later, Workhouse could be the workhouse where she worked. Does anyone know the years when the house was dedicated as a workhouse?
I would have thought that if Cray's Lane curves around the church then the church was there first. Why would the road take a detour if there was nothing on the site it went around? To me it suggests the road curved around something that was there before the church was built.
According to History Online - the path is likely to have been through the site before the church - possibly because if the church was there first, the route may have passed the church in a more straight line, rather than hugging the graveyard.
I admit I don't get the logic of the road and the church. The road curves around the church, which proves the road was there first. Does that mean someone knew that in the future a church would be built there, and they went around it before it existed? This will keep me awake at night.
you beat me to it, the fact that the road curves around the church, to me, shows that the church predates the road. Thoroughly enjoying these videos. The history and delightful country walks is what I miss most, living in the Antipodes.

Another wonderful walk, Richard. I can see that a lot of editing work went into producing it. Very smooth!
It's all in the edit! :)

Yes I would have thought that to but greater historians have deemed that the path is older than the church for that reason.
The mature yew trees suggest that the church stands on a pre-Christian religious site, which the road would have skirted.
Andy Alder .
Maybe because of the ' hill ' !
Easier to go round with animal etc
than climb up , then down !
There must of been a very good reason !
Hi Richard. I’m puzzled. If the road goes round the Church surely the Church was there first?
I kind of agree with you that a church was located on that spot before the road/lane came into being.
According to History Online - the path is likely to have been through the site before the church - possibly because if the church was there first, the route may have passed the church in a more straight line, rather than hugging the graveyard.
Aaah ok, I can see the logic now.
OK I see the logic,

There is a reason why :0

Surprised you did not wake up the ghost!!
Ah, yes - the ghost!
