Oil Jugs and how to figure out how much is left in the jug

- You pay good money for that synthetic stuff and then end up putting too much or too little oil in your engine after doing an oil change because you can't see through the little window on the side of the jug for some stupid reason - Mark figures out how to see how much oil is left in the jug without pouring it out and measuring it.
Excellent solution to annoying problem!!
Thanks for the comment Gudmundur
I needed .8 Liter for a Honda ADV150. Ended up buying a measuring cup from Amazon for $5 USD, that was metric. It had up to 1 Liter on it, so it's easy to pour the oil up to 800 ML.
Changing oil my whole life, I always tried to use a flashlight to check and never thought to put it inside. Thanks for the great idea.
Loved the "I'm over this sh*t" vibe to this video. Feeling the same way over here.
Glad to help Ian - Cheers from Canada - again!
BRUH! YOU DIDNT HAVE TO BUY THAT LED LIGHT WHEN YOU ALREADY HAD YOUR FLASH LIGHT, YOU COULD OF JUST PLACED IT ON TOP AND IT WOULD DO THE SAME THING. 🤦♂️
I wonder if they purposely make the container dark to prevent light from entering. Light may degrade the oil. That is what I suspect. Could be wrong but I do agree with you on the indicator strip. It's too tough to read
Here is in my opinion a technique for better measuring and solution to an inability to read the larger jugs, oil storage, addition, and consumption. Save one or two empty one quart (0.94635295 liter) oil containers. Fill these containers from the large 5 gal (4.4 liter) jug, recycle the large jugs, save the left overs, and pouring the right amount is easier with less error from the smaller container. I believe recycling is a better solution than five dollar "Chinese" lights. That is my opinion on what grinds your gears.
Also thank you for the video and instruction set for the 07 Subaru CV Axle.
The more ideas - the more I like - thanks for the info - expensive though - here in Canada 1 litre costs $6.00 and the 5 litre on sale is $17.00
Maybe the containers are different in the USA, but I can read the level without a light, very easily too.
Maybe that's the reason - ? never thought of that - the ones here are crap and my eyesight is 20/20 - Cheers from Canada!
how about measuring out a quart into an empty quart bottle, problem solved .
I think the flourination process they use to chemically passivate the plastic turns just about any plastic, but especially HDPE, translucent. Take a look at a piece of teflon tubing next time you get a chance. It ha the exact same translucent look to it. Almost like it's glowing a little bit. Anyway, I'm pretty sure that's why. Even if it started out perfectly clear that fluorination would cloud it.
Take a look inside an oil or gas container and you'll see what I mean. It has this translucent film that's very slippery on the inside (and sometimes they do the outside as well it seems). Then google plastic bottle fluorination. It's pretty interesting.
Thanks for the information Mister! - too bad you don't work for Castrol
My vehicle called for 6.6 quarts of oil - so I bought 7 individual quart bottles and put 6 quarts in and then put in up the 6 mark on the litre side of the 7th quart - does that make it 6.6?
You’re the GOAT MAN!!!! Thanks so much
Anytime Tom - cheers from Canada!
Mine says 4.8 I can pour 4 quarts fill the filter run it down the ramps wait a few minutes 5 or 10 on a flat surface then I check the dip stick 3 time maybe add if I need to or leave it that’s just what I do 🤷♀️ a couple days I might check it ✌️
Very good advice indeed - Cheers from Canada!
Feel your pain, man. Don’t know why they put oil in friggin’ black jugs anyway?? To make my life easier on my small engine equipment I made sure the old oil level was right then drained it into the cut off bottom of a washer solvent jug. I marked the level with a permanent marker than poured it in my drain pan. You then clean it out with a shop towel, fill the new oil up to that mark than just pour it in. Yes, it’s a little messy but with nitrile gloves it’s no big deal. Soooo much quicker than checking and rechecking oil levels. I can reuse the marked container indefinitely. Use this method for my 4 wheeler, riding lawn mower and snowblower. Not applicable to automotive oil changes obviously but there has to be a better way than those stupid black jugs.
I hear you Miles - thanks for the comment
Hehehehehe, i typed "Do the flash light trick" before watching the whole Vid. I have some fancy measuring cups on metric and imperial that i use when it comes to "very specific" quantities.
YES, THE CLEAR STRIP on the jugs DO SUCK . . . WORTHLESS.
100% agree Jiga - useless
can i put 6 quarts of oil if my car needs 5.07 quarts? will it damage engine?
Ya John - not a good idea - it will probably run no problems but you will cause the engine to start an oil leak that will develop over time - Cheers from Canada!
Try doing it with the 4l container I have. There is no translucent. It's all black
Just dumb eh? - thanks for the comment - cheers from Canada!
you had the same solution I did!
Great minds.........
Great tip bro 👍
Thanks 👍 Cheers from Canada Lukey!
I think they need a coloured plastic to print on..clear isn't a good back ground.
You could just get a food scale and you can put an empty container on the sale and poor some oil in until you have the rigjt amount.
Just poor one a one quart bottle in there fisrt to see how much a quart of oil weights.
A good idea for sure - Cheers from Canada!
I do the same thing but use a flashlight.
Good idea as well - Cheers from Canada!
Good idea as well - Cheers from Canada!
If you cant see the oil level in those your due for a eye exam it boils down to people dont take the time to set it somewhere on the engine i use the battery or box use a light etc waste of film no good info just lazy
Pictures don't lie Gary -
If you have a wholesale store I pay 14.00 same jug
Good price Rob - Cheers from Canada!
$40!
ya hecidpa - not cheap up here
Excellent manufacture ripoff!
your problem is obviously using metric , LOL !
That must be it
The problem is YOU. I never have any issues reading the indicator.
Get some bifocal glasses dude!
Thats an HD video pal - how's your eyes - can you see it in the video superman?- nope
They are clear to see you must be totally blind.
And the video shows that I guess - no
