In August, I purchased a mint condition 91k miles 2014 P85 from a BMW dealer for $22,771 out the door. I ALSO qualify for $4k California electric company rebate and $4k federal tax. So this car was net $14,771. Tesla head mechanic asked me if I would sell it to him after a service drive. I COULD NOT allow myself to pay $32k for a Model 3 base after rebates. Model S has 8% degradation (revision D battery) and motor is silent. Model S IF you find the right car. I can sell it now for $25k. Best of luck to you who are shopping now. Side note, BUY A CAR YOU CAN AFFORD IN CASH. Don’t be stupid and take out a loan to look cool when you can’t afford rent.
Good info!
Do you still have it?
Used model s with free supercharging is a steal
Yes indeed!!
The free super charging is non transferable
Some people are lucky and the SC has transferred w no problem
As long as they don’t need to take it into Tesla of course 😉
@@RoyaleWitCheese04 it is transferred if you don’t buy it directly from Tesla. The same is with FSD, you can transfer it from a totaled tesla and then transfer it to your tesla for less than 15,000$. So always buy a used tesla with free supercharging directly from any place other than from tesla.
@@g.pearson4726 💯!!
Tesla model S all day! They are just so much better looking in my opinion
Yeah they are great looking cars!
Thanks mate for the great video 👍👌
Cheers!
Great video - comparison that I have been looking for! I agree with your conclusion regarding going with the M3 RWD. Also of note is that with the LFP battery, you can charge it frequently to 100% of the full range, whereas Model S, you'll have to limit to 80% charge for daily driving. Also LFP battery is a safer chemistry from fire risk standpoint, than older Tesla NMC batteries,
Thanks for sharing!
Loved the analysis
Thank you!
Great presentation, I didn’t know about the free super charging on the ones 2017 and older
Thanks for watching!
Excellent analysis!
Thank you!
thanks man for the video ...make me taka a decision
👍
Excellent!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for making DIY videos.
Thank you!!
Very nice. Your video is speaking to the exact same thing I'm looking at right now. For me the air suspension is a con to have. Yes, it does ride nicer, but is way more $$$ to fix. Coil over suspension rides nice, lasts longer and is cheaper to fix. I know on my Mercedes, the parts alone for just the front end would run you $3k not including installation. That's why so many people convert to coil overs. I love the S, but I'm really leaning to a new model 3. Thanks again for the info.
You make some good points, thanks for sharing
We just went through this and went with the used S. Low miles with a healthy battery, I work on my own cars and not afraid to ship it to have a battery pack repaired if it comes to that. We just couldn't do the basic looking interior of the M3. Good comparison.
Thanks for sharing your experience, what trim did you go with?
I did the same last month. The dash of the model 3 is a showstopper for me, I really prefer a more traditional dash. I bought a 2018 Model S with FSD, MCU 2, panorama roof, and premium audio. In the Netherlands it was still less costly than a new Model 3.
@@Myksgarage
I went with the 85D. No air suspension, 19" wheels with panoramic sunroof, Sub Zero package and Premium Interior and Lighting packages. Bronze color. It's beautiful!
I bought a 2014 models S with 50k miles for $15k and loving it. Battery was already replaced and comes with free connectivity. Plus the paint looks like new. The dude took care of it and kept it in his garage
@@Laissez_Faire $15k! Wow. You sure that wasn't a relative?
Bought a used 2017, 100D for 28k. Drives like a dream.
That's awesome!
How many miles? Still happy with it?
@@alexmack956 at 86k miles, bought at around 82k. I love it, but obviously haven't driven it enough to run into issues. Previous owner took great care of the car
@@WassimShomali sounds like a good deal
The only reason I would consider an older model S is the free supercharging
Every other reason I feel like I’m holding a ticking time bomb
True!
thank you
👍
Hands down I was driving a model 3 liked it but I like to look of the model S better and I got a 2016 Model S 75 Legacy midnight metallic silver 2.0 autopilot free supercharging for life free premium connectivity Sky roof $36,000
Nice!
Went with the 2020 S vs a new 3 or Y. The interior quality was significantly different, but the main difference was the suspension. The suspension in the 3 and Y are pretty horrendous (and I am a huge Tesla fan). Additionally, getting used allowed me to find FSD on the car without having to pay the $15k to get if purchasing a new vehicle.
Those are some great reasons to buy a used S. Thanks for sharing!
15k? I thought it was 100 per month
I think you have the choice of monthly or one-time fee. The new model S FSD price was lowered to 8k one time fee as of may 2024.
I made a similar decision last month.. I had a 2020 Model S. I traded in the S for a 2023 Model 3. I would absolutely do it again. In my opinion a more advanced vehicle with the technology 2023 vs the 2020.. Love the price savings vs the cost of the S. The 3 is a great value in my opinion.
Thanks for sharing your experience!
You did good sir!
Congratulations
Ah this is the debate that im looking at, 2020 MS vs 2023 M3. What price savings are you looking at besides cost to charge battery?
nice vid
Thank you
Also if you search for it, you can find a Model S with some fine options like FSD, autopilot, Mcu 2 etc...
Yes, good suggestion!!
I bought a 2016 Model S 70D in 2019 (only 20k miles) after going over the same debate and test driving both the MS and M3.
I have no regrets, I strongly preferred the MS after testing both... but now that my MS is nearing the end of its warranty, and with upgrades to the newer M3's I'm considering the comparison again. I'll have to go test a new M3 and see if it feels better than the older 2018/19 versions.
Thanks for sharing your experience!
What is a better pick. A 2017 model s p100d with 20k miles for $39k or a 2021 model 3 performance with 20k miles for 35k. Both are white with white interior pls lmk
@@auxkiniv1252 Personally, I'd go for the MS, but keep in mind the warranty only stays intact if you purchase from Tesla direct, and you will only get 2 yrs or less on the MS (8-yrs from date of manufacture).
@@auxkiniv1252what did you decide? In exactly same boat
In Sweden, you could choose between two types of rims if you ordered a Tesla 3. The usual ones with air capsules or the ones with chrome rims. the exception was the Tesla 3 performance
NOTE In Sweden you can also add winter tires with rims to the order. But then you also had to pay more
Model 3 has 2 wheel options in the USA as well. The winter tire is a nice option!
Did you get rid of the GMC Yukon XL? Looking for more videos on that!
I still have it, I'm trying to come up with video ideas for it, any suggestions?
If you want to model three that’s faster and has more range just get a used model three I have a 2018 long-range RWD when purchased 111,000miles on it now 137,000 miles and I get 290 at 100% best purchase I’ve ever made and got it for $26,999
Thanks for sharing your experience
It’s very interesting topic but I think the models is a better drive with the better suspension if you get the right one
Yeah that's a good point
2015 85d with free charging included is hard to beat!
Yeah free supercharging is a nice perk!
Thanx for this ! I had no idea older model s would charge slower. Getting a model 3 then. Best video on a topic !!
Thanks for watching!
Totally forgot about the video and ended up getting model S. Loving it though !!!! Such a smooth ride compared to the 3
You could have mention extended aftermarket warranty for the model is S as an option
Oh yeah!
The longer I own my 2013 Model S the less happy I am about it. There have been more issues then I care to deal with. Nav system updates not working (MCU1), passenger side door popping open, headlight bulbs, alignment issues, sway bar, power window issues, battery (no not the cheap one...the 14k one) ac issues, heat issues, environmental air direction issues. Thats in 10 months from Dec 2022 to this month 9/2023. It may not cost anything for supercharging or LTE data, savings on gas, but the repairs are far more costly then I had anticipated and is triggering my "is this bs worth it" question. Id say this will be my last tesla unfortunately unless something changes with reliability drastically. The 1 service center in the area has alot to be desired. There is an alternative place called EVOLVE but I have never tried them
Thanks for sharing your experience,
damn, that’s terrible. what’s the trim and mileage on it? how much was the car and how much have you spent on repairs?
@@sb9998 lets see.....I bought it in Dec 2022, 58k miles for 36k. Car payment $669/mo and insurance 1066/mo with $500 deductible....since then Nav sim replaced and not fixed still charged.....$195,
Heat not shooting from floor area $300. Passenger side door cracking its seal on park....$400, Front Headlight bulbs $400, AC/heater, directional venting and High Capacity Battery.....14,595.00....thats right almost 15k that wasnt a typo. Rear driver side window not working correctly and spazzing out like a mental patient....$375. Keyfob replacement $500. and these last 2 are broken but im not paying for them.....heater directional vent and sway bar and both aft links heater tube replacement $2500 and the sway and aft links $1500. I cant get the alignment I need bc of this sway and aft link issue....The dealings I have with the Tesla service center are just the worst. They are like dealing with a used car salesmen if you know what that reference means. I dont want to add these numbers up bc ill probably stroke out. I had to cash in some of my retirement money to pay that bill. If I ever make a youtube video about how bad this is ill probably feel better but idk. Theres only 2 good things about this car. 1. Its quick, and 2 it looks pretty but not 1 other fkn thing is good about it.
@@dupaacct5956 jesus fuckin christ my dude, that’s an absolute nightmare. it’s low mileage too, wtf?! and did you say $1,066/m on insurance? that can’t be right man…
@@sb9998 nah every 6 months....I did forget to mention on the heater they charged me a diag fee of 195 and the alignment a $95 diag on the sway bar/aft links......whats also irritating is this would of been the thrid time this 1st year on the heater/ac and its still not working. Around $1000 on it and its still not working. Thats Tesla service at this location. No honor in fixing it just keep charging
For some of you in America, AM radio is an issue. for those with a Tesla Can MCU1 Can be an advantage for AM radio well since disappeared from Tesla altogether
Yeah upgrading to MCU2 gets rid of AM radio, which for me is no loss, I haven’t used that in a very long time
Any used S 100%
Interesting
$32,000 for a 2016 model S that's close to being out of warranty is too much. I like Tesla's.
Yeah it is
So I have older model S I bought a aftermarket warranty which covers everything except the battery of course LOL everything else is covered sunroof on down so that could be another option for some
That's nice to have!
Where did you get your extended warranty and about $4k for 5 years ?
American dreams yes
New Model 3 Performance hands down!! ⚡️That’s the only one that qualifies for the $7,500 and all of the Model Y’s including the Model X LR with no upgrades.
Yeah a model y right now is probably the best deal
I believe the model 3 rwd with lfp packs charge at 170kw max.
Yes, good point
Correct me if I'm wrong but Isn't it the case that you can also find a used Tesla S Where it has received some kind of upgrade so that the charging can go a little faster?
Yeah back in the early days you could option your Model S with dual on board chargers that would allow up to 80amps charging at home.
Man I have the model 3 used 2020 love my car my only regret 100% is I didn't get the model y
Thanks for sharing
I'm actually currently comparing an Audi A7, 2018 Tesla Model S 100D or an inventory 2023 Long range Model 3. Would your answer still be the same if the Model S is being sold with a 1 year warranty?
Yeah warranty is a big deal with a Tesla
The Tesla S was available with a sunroof. But it was discontinued in 2017 or 2018 ?
Yeah they had problems with leaks and malfunctions.
I’d go with the model 3 performance
Good choice!
I'm currently trying to decide between a 2021-2022 performance or a 2019-2020 Model S Long Range. Price is a few $K higher for Model S in that year range. Performance appears similar. Unsure of battery/technology. What are your thoughts? Why does the Model 3 performance win out?
Now I see some model 3 performance on the Tesla website for $48,000 or less. I would get that with the tax credit. It's only about $8,000 more to go from the rear-wheel-drive model 3 to the performance.
Yes you'd qualify for the tax credit, as long as your are within the income ranges
@Myksgarage yes I do qualify. Next year they can take the incentive right off the selling price.
After looking at the recent prices, the Model Y performance is the best choice. The model 3 performance is only about $1500 cheaper. And the LR is too close too.
I am looking at 2016 model s 75D with unlimited supercharging vs 2019 model 3 dual long range. the add says model s still have warranty but can't decide on what to get.
Any warranty on the model S will be expired by the end of the year. I'd go model 3
@@Myksgarage yeah now that I am thinking unlimited super charge not sure how much will save me in long run. I guess better to get newer tech and couple more years warranty.
The cost of the cars these days is not the issue, it's the cost that organized crime is extorting, insurance. I can afford the car but not the insurance that is almost as much as a used Model S car payment.
What area do you live in?
You can find them with upgraded hardware to MCU 2 because Tesla has Offered the hardware upgrade to people who had a Tesla that was manufactured in 2018 or earlier. Surely you can still buy such an upgrade if you want?
Yeah you can, it's like $1,700
The Tesla S had a HUGE luggage space under the front hood in its two-wheel drive variant. At least if you compare with New electric cars today
Yeah it did have a large front trunk
Get the 2017 model s because that will have the side fender cameras
That's a good year!!
I do have a question, when you recently flew out of town, was your car rental a EV?
It was a gas car, I wouldn't want to rent an EV when I'm on vacation, too big of a hassle with the charging
Thanks for this video. Realistically it wouldn’t make sense to buy anything older than 2020 or with more than 40,000 miles on it. Fair to say one shouldn’t get an S if they truly can’t afford it.
Yeah good point
Why is 2020 the year you picked? Was there an upgrade to the tech/battery then? I read 2019 was a year they made alot of changes on the motor.
If you owe Fed/State when you do taxes do not expect the subsidies. Consider used.
Okay
Model 3, as it has full warranty, most Model s do not , so if you like to take chances. Of battery going bad, it's up to you. Battery can cost $15k, , I'd be afraid to get s.
Good point!
Third party can rebuild the battery for $5k
asking if you should buy a new or used ev is like asking if you should buy new or used underware
Used definitely! 😎
I’m kinda more interested in a DM M3 with FSD that someone else paid for
Yeah that would be a good buy!
I just bought a m3 with fsd for $33k@@Myksgarage
Unless the car dealer you buy it from has some type of warranty like any used car
Good point, thanks for all of your great comments!!
You must pay 5000 extra for a warranty for a year
I don't know if it's changed, but 3 years ago I bought a used 2016 Model x, and it came with an extended 4-year used car warranty from Tesla.
Interesting....
@@Myksgarage correction: I was reading it wrong🫤 it only came with a 1 year used car warranty, along with the existing 8 year warranty. You are correct ✔️
But if you drive as much as the man who has driven more than 1 million Miles with his Tesla S . so the free charging can perhaps save as much money in a year as a new battery or a new engine. Someone claimed that he drove 4000 kilometers every month
Yeah I watched a few videos about his experience. He had quite a few drive unit replacements during that 8 year warranty period
The tax credit is only on new cars or used ev's? Thanks
It is now for both. The used ones have to be less $25,000 and from a dealer.
What about if you lease the car? Thanks
Note to self, get a slightly used Model 3 Long Range and have best of both: range and speed!
I like how you think!
U lose free super charging, comfort, space. That's where I'm at now
Is it poasible to have a TV wall on this pergola?
Possibly
Good video
Just one correction: mcu2 was introduced in 2018
And also model S at that time has an 8 year warranty with no mileage limit for motors and drive train
For example a 2018 car will be covered until 2026 even if you drive >500000 miles
Good to know
2017 model S 100D (60k mi) for $23k VS 2018 model 3 Performance (70k mi) for $16k...thoughts?
$16k for a model 3 is a bargain!
The battery pack itself would cost anywhere between 30 to 35k to replace, if it’s out of warranty. Please consider whether it’s worth taking the risk to buy a used one or not. With the federal incentives and the declining EV prices, and the 8 year warranty for new ones - do you really think a used Tesla is worth a buy?!!
It's more like $14,000 to replace the pack
@@Myksgarage I don’t know where you got the numbers from but I got to hear from the Tesla service Center that a model s battery pack would cost anywhere between 30 to 35k including installation, calibration etc.
MPGe is very misleading. No way on Earth it accounts for super charging. If you do the math at $0.33 kWhr (the lowest possible I've seen), you get 9 miles per dollar.
With gas prices at say, $3.50 per gallon a Prius can do more than 14 miles per dollar (est 50mpg), so for a Tesla to do 100 mpg + it would need to be towed most of the way.
Interesting comparison
Tax credit only applies if you make under the income limit. $1 over and the credit goes away entirely.
Yup!
Can we spell check reliability up there? 😅
👍
S is so much better and bigger. All aluminum frame.
👍
Isnt there a 4k tax rebate now?
For used Model 3s under 25k and only from a Dealer
You can find used Tesla S's where The previous owner has upgraded the hardware to MCU2
Yes good point
@@Myksgarage However, they had to buy something extra if they wanted to continue and use FM radio Or DAB at least in Sweden. Here in Sweden, AM radio is not a big issue. DAB Is Digital radio in Europe Broadcast from regular radio masts
$2000 spent on repairs on your model S in 3 years, and you call that a reliability issue? I've spent $6000 one year for an axle replacement, $3000 the next year to replace the computer on my Ford 2014 F250 in the span of 2 years, and this year it has a possible mechanical issue with alignment.
Good point
There is also a $4000 tax credit for used EV's that qualify. Also there are state tax credits to consider.
Yeah it's harder to find a used one for under $25k and from a dealer
M3P all day. Every day, save $25-40k and the car is as fast. Where can you even use the speed of these cars. They are too fast to even use all they can do when you punch it
Yeah the new M3P is a sweet car!
I think also nieuwe model 3 is better
Yeah the new one has a lot of great features
Taxes don’t come back at the end of the year either, because you have to owe taxes and most people get refunds so that’s how you get caught and don’t get back anything
Good point
Not true - your refund will just be $7500 more.
@@evolusd Non refundable credit - you don’t get more back than what you owe
that's not how the tax credit works... unless you owe $7500 in taxes at the end of the year, you won't get it credited towards the purchase price
That was already assumed
@@Myksgarage you'll be surprised how many people I've talked to that think they are getting a $7500 refund next year haha
Let's go Brandon!!!!!!! 🇺🇸
😁
@@Myksgarage I debating between the AMG Mercedes and Tesla, I like the S, but would likely go for the 3 because of the value.
