    ALIENS Behind-the-Scenes Chestburster Mechanism FX Test
    FULL STORY: bit.ly/Chestbur...
    No sequel to ALIEN would have been complete without paying homage to the infamous 'Chestburster' scene, so director James Cameron memorably included the grotesque parasites in ALIENS as well.
    Featuring commentary by film director and FX designer, Stephen Norrington (Blade, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen), who built the chestburster mechanism used in the film.

      Too much CGI ruins a lot of otherwise decent movies , I prefer it used sparingly with older style special effects like in Alien . That movie still holds up today very well .

    • @Dinoman217
      @Dinoman217 8 років тому +1

      +Lustria StormBorn That's actually how the T-600 was made in Terminator: Salvation! They had Bryan Steele inside a blue screen suit with fabricated parts, and CGI hydraulics were put in were they were needed! The same goes for the moto-terminators; in that scene where Christian Bale hijacks one and rides it to San Fransisco, they actually modified a Kawasaki motorcycle to look more like a terminator on wheels. As a matter of fact, there were only two machines in the movie that couldn't be done with puppetry. One was the harvester, and that thing was huge. The other was the H.K.

    Stan Winston was one of a kind, I can't even begin to explain what that name means to me. His absences in movie effects is so noticeable. I really miss his work in movies, I absolutely adore the work he did in movies. He is a one of a kind and my absolute favourite in practical effects, and movies will never be the same without him.

    Awesome movie, awesome acting, awesome effects, even compared to what digital effects are like now.
    But that aside, when it was said that the tiny little arms give a lot of character or emotion or whatever to the chestburster, is it me or does it look like he's passionately singing an opera?

    • @StanWinstonSchool
      @StanWinstonSchool  10 років тому +1

      It's not just you, MetalSynkk. A few others have said the same thing. Question is: What opera is he singing?? -Matt

  • @StanWinstonSchool
    @StanWinstonSchool  11 років тому +2

    Great debate, guys. We need BOTH. The best effect is the one the movie calls for. Most likely, the ones that make us gasp are begun with something cool on set to shoot & the seams are smoothed out in post.
    The real truth is we have a huge swath of fans, students & faculty comprised of genius CG artists. They LOVE practical effects and keep studying to make their digital work more organic. Anatomy and gravity are ideas that need to MASTERED. The best artists use it all.

    The reason things like this were so scary was because they actually had a physical presence. The Thing, Alien etc were actually scary. CGI has literally never scared me and I dare to say most people find CGI less scary as well.

    Stan Winston Studios has been going since around 1972 & is one of the best visual effects companies in the world. It'll probably outlive the individual artists involved. This isn't a portfolio for the individual artist. It's to show how a talented person within the company created the mechanics for the chestburster. Also the video footage is prob owned by Stan Winston Studios - So it would require their branding anyway.
    Great video - I love seeing the mechanics behind how creatures work!

    i agree this is why Aliens is considered one of the best Sci fi movies ever, they had to use their creativity to deal with this kind of effects, thats a more real approach than CG if you ask me, thats why the movie feels so real even if you are watching space marines and aliens killing each other LOL

    i think we need both CG and mechanical effects, for me the CGI works for far away subjects but for closer subjects, they need to use mechanised or puppetry for that realistic effect movie junkies and critics crave.

    One of the faults of CGI is that because the creature is digital, it moves at a higher framerate, 60 FPS(currently), than a practical creature. A matter of fact, the digital creature has so much frames of animation per second that it moves at unreal speeds. Films usually run between 24-30 FPS just so you know.

    You practical affects guys should teach CGI guys about the mechanics involved in how things move. even with motion capture around, im sure they can still learn a thing or two about simulating natural movements in their subjects

  • @PrimordialSeries
    @PrimordialSeries 11 років тому

    Quite true, though I think the best CGI guys don't need it. Look at ILM's stuff... so natural...
    More integration between puppets and CGI is a must though... together they produce far greater results than if either is used (or misused in some cases) on its own. Jurassic Park is perfection in this sense.

    This is in contrast with modern CGI which uses the exact same smoothed dead motions and IK to all their characters.. That's because they basically all use the same 3D tools. Something living like this, has flaws, irregular organic motions due to real constraints, that is what makes it real and gives it impact. To bad modern CGI artist have forgotten this..

    Very diplomatic and realistic of you. Unfortunately, 90% of CGI in film is shit, and film effects have suffered a long decline due to it's popularity. I weep when I think of how many great artists never pursued or displayed their craft because of CGI's prevalence. The superiority of practical effects is just so blatantly obvious to me in the final product. How can it not be obvious to everyone else? Rant, froth.
