Love your videos!💚
21:00 ludi how it could make colonization faster it gives goodproduced but you probably going to kill natives in next minutes and dont get it either.
Maybe you should've taken this opprtunity to show how trade power/steering works by using Portugal to gain lands in every trade node then with mercantilism/trade power filter all the trade to Sevilla. Love your videos but this is the same thing you did with Portugal last time, and the time before, so people dont understand the true strength of the nation in steering asian trade to Europe via the cape of good hope.
I was really expecting "... Jolof. JOLOF THEIR WALLETS", the surgery recovery must be hitting him harder than he's letting on.
For the natives I like to pick the middle option (-50% chance of uprisings) then get the Clergy privilege that reduces it by another 50% (making it zero), as well as gives a boost to assimilation
Yeah but then your people have to live with savages.
Unnecessary. When you complete Exploration and Expansion ideas, the policy gives you -50%, so with the Clergy privilege, it goes to zero - but you still get the + global settler increase from the colonial policy.
@@ryanb2607 ok but by that point you’ll have tons of colonies already and the rush will be over
@@DrLottaBurgwell those savagussy feels different than the euroussy
I had those and I have never gotten an assimilation.
What also would be fun is if you could try to stop every other country from colonizing by taking their coast lines (at least the european ones) or whatever while colonizing as much as you can yourself. I tried but I am not good enough
it is better to let the others colonise and take their lands from them
@@sasizm5322 yes, it is cheaper
@@sasizm5322 ye it's not about effectiveness but more like playing against the game and trying to deny other countries. Just for fun challenge
@@sasizm5322 ye it's not about effectiveness but more like playing against the game and trying to deny other countries. Just for fun challenge
I've been trying to do that with a save I started in CKII. Started as Mercia, unified Britain, started munching into France, Iberia and magreb. Somehow Pomerania (of all people) managed to go colonial from Denmark, despite me owning Iceland
People knew since antiquity earth was round. Greek mathematician Eratostenes calculated its size. He realised there's no shade in some days in Alexandria, so based on a very well measured distance between Alexandria and another city where there was shade at 1 degree. He took that distance and multiplied it by 360 and he got 40 000 km, which is 500 km short. Quite a good job.
Yes round like a plate
The other city was Syene, modern day Aswan. There was a well at Syene that reflected the sun perfectly on the summer solstice. He then measured the angle of the shadow cast by a pole in Alexandria on the same day.
Christopher Columbus tried to convince the Portuguese to back his trip west. The Portuguese had two reasons not to do this. 1) They were invested in going east, by going around africa to get to india and 2) They knew that the trip west would be too far and that no ship could carry enough fresh water to survive the journey.
For whatever reason, Columbus was convinced that the earth was smaller than all the measurements showed that it was, he thought he could cross the western ocean and survive. Queen Isabella decided to back him and he went west.... he got very lucky, and landed in a place that the europeans had no idea was there.
Nope. Columbus had old maps showing the 'new world'
@@ryanb2607
Source: my balls
@@ryanb2607 which is why Portugal didn't want to waste money on his voyage, they already knew there was land there, they just didn't know if it was worth anything, although the part about supplying such a voyage also weighted on that decision. Better to let Castille spend their money on that while they focused on the safe bet of reaching Asia by going around Africa.
@@admontblanc Wait, did people know about Americas before Colombus arrived??
The Vikings reached North America in 1001 ad, they settled "Markland" in New Foundland and "Vinland" somewhere South in what is today New England. The first Europeans on North American soil were Scandanavian and knew about lands to the West since 1001 ad with the testimony of Thorvgald and his men... Besides all of that, there were already people here. So "finding" land (hence, the "New World") is more of a euphemism for the idea of America, not a literal discovery. Creating a dualist approach that "savages" vs. "civilized" folk constitutes a "discovery" is an archaic belief in cultural anthropology and is not accepted as having factual basis. The indigenous people of the Americas had vast societies with complex technology, religion, and systems of government. There is one race, the human race, and any logistical seperation in human history based on cultural differences is asinine to the idea of our place in the Universe.
39:55 and the Oscar goes to.....
Ludi, if you move your capital to just the New World (Bermuda) then you'll still have South America form colonies, if you want to avoid ALL colonies you'll have to move your capital to South America, preferably Brazil no biases there.
I was playing portugal yestreday but in 1453 start date. I changed my capital to ceuta thinking that I could later change my capital into a colonial province. Didn't realise 1453 Portugal has Arguin colonized as well.
I was playing with france and I defeated England and Portugal repeatedly. Eventually I got Portugal and I decided to vassalize them just for fun. I ended up having a dominant colonial empire just by letting them do their thing.
I would not mind a new estate video really. It would help
I'm always confused with that Comet event. Comets are seen for a few weeks from all around the world (well, at least whole North/South hemisphere). This event should apply to all countries at once!
Given the scale of the objects involved, the comet would not be visible from everywhere at the same time.
Hey, yeah...
Great video! Love you!!
Here I woke up, wondering what I would play today and then, BAM, new Ludi video drops. Guess I am playing a new Portugal game today. Thanks for the vid!
Great video as always!!
Do the Brazzers challenge.
I'm having massive blast playing Portugal of late. They are indeed amazingly set up for colonial empire/trade domination. With nodes adjused, and Castille/Spain screwed, you can end up with 70% world trade streaming to Seville, right into your coffers.
Here in brazil i learned in school that the Portuguese allways kinda new that there was a continent west but they never bothered. Also learned that when Cabral (or even colombo) were sent, the intention was already to grow profitable crops that are more adapted to the American climate (mainly sugar cane and i think cotton to)
Could be wrong... i never looked into it for myself
would love to see the book or any information on that. Never heard even a wink of that in discussion. It's funny that people think everyone thought the world was flat when in reality the globe was a consensus theory (been verified by a greek in egypt as well in BC times). Would make sense why the portugese would think something was out there. I know colombus just thought it was a lot of water but not sure about any other insights
@armyaj well i dont have any particular sorces. As i said, it was just information an average brazilian middleschooler hears on class :( sorry
@@parsifal2299as a Portuguese we’ve learned that firstly they wanted to get a naval route to India, and then they started investing on their colonies. They signed after with Spain the Tordesilhas Treaty (idk if the English changed the name of it) to agree to divide the world one for another, having a small part of Brasil on the Portugal side for that matter.
After that I just know that João V ruined our economy and that’s the beginning of the downfall of the golden era for Portugal.
And there was also the Lisbon big tsunami that wiped out most of Lisbon, and the French invasions too
Portugal mentioned 🇵🇹🇵🇹 great video as always Ludi, much love ❤
Awesome video. Part 2 pls
Portugal has always been overpowered (colonially) I feel
Definitely
Spain is almost as bad and they have a decent chance to knock out Portugal early if England is busy with other stuff like ehm let's say France.
10:44 hahahahaha, Ludi was exceptionally proud about that one xd
Yes! Estate video, especially for the unique estates
It's not a good day without a Ludi video. Use your old estate guide to help boost my game play and would enjoy an update.
Awesome , let's do more parts for this ❤
Any update videos for mechanics and systems are always appreciated and helpful! Thanks for the good stuff!
I actually use my light ships to explore. If you sleep on the dip tech and get the exploration idea early, you can explore the whole world before 1500s.
Settler chance gives exactly 35. In previous patches arriving settler was giving also those, so it was possible with clever change of the capital to have a colony done in year.
We need a cooking with Ludi video NOW
The return of the historical Pride of the Portuguese Fleet: The Gina Valentina
Also trade companies give bonus to goods produce in non-trade company provinces in the same node. The amount of goods produced is based on trade influence of the company and institutions accepted (20% per each institution in 100% trade influence of the trade company).
So the best option if you have the entire region is to put 1-3 states in trade company possession and max trade influence in these very regions up to 50% of the node. That gives you from 10 to 70% goods produced in region adn 1 merchant.
That strat is so effective that some country like ottos can make 500 incame in 1500 by using that feature.
Hell ya man sick vid🤘
Can i request that mzab game again lol
The ship naming of ludi shows me he is a man of culture
„Find out if there is natives“ - Button hahahaha xd love you
Can you do another estate video please!! Can you show how your estates should change as the game progresses
3 step guide:
1)Mana privileges and a couple of other strong privileges. 2)after you finish your first couple of wars add a load of privileges. 3)Remove all the privileges in order of highest influence for lowest loyalty before 1610
WTF what was the point in getting 5 loans at the start? Got owned by all the interest and had no money to colonize...
I would like a new estate and reform guide, they have been changed a lot in 1.36
HELL YES to 1.36 estate video please!
Please do make an updated Estate guide. Maybe an updated Army Composition guide as well if you think it's necessary.
New estate video? Yes please! 🤩
An estates video would be awesome
I havent watched your stuff in a while, i got hella burnt out after getting a world conquest as austria and abandoned EU4, and, in turn, you, but i always wanted to do a portugal run going colonial so lets see what you have to offer
Estate video! Estate video! Love ma estate theoryyyy :D
Ludi, going west was Columbus' idea, the portuguese led by many others but mainly Vasco da Gama (The first to reach India by sea) went south and around Africa to reach Asia. On one of those voyages south Pedro Álvares Cabral was blown off course and accidentally discovered Brasil.
Columbus also thought that the circumference of the Earth was significantly smaller than it is and many others had calculated. Given how difficult it is to just cross the Pacific with the technology of the time unless you already know the currents, weather patterns and position of suitable islands this was deemed an impossible distance to cross. IIRC they tried to find suitable islands to extend their reach but those are quite rare in the mid Atlantic. So it came down to either leaps of faith or accidents to discover anything in this direction. And taking into account how expensive such expeditions were, few were willing to take the risk.
@@kaltaron1284 " IIRC they tried to find suitable islands to extend their reach but those are quite rare in the mid Atlantic" lol, incidentally Portugal had colonized the Azores and Cape Verde which are both in the middle of the Atlantic. That was only an issue for anyone else.
@@admontblanc And that's kind of the problem. Those islands were already quite isolated and the next one to the West is a tiny spot called Bermuda. The next stop is already the continent. Or the Caribbean a bit further to the South.
Sending an expedition into this vastness was a gigantic gamble.
yess ludi make a new estates video
14:40 ottoman tariffs are so high even making an ocean fleet and sailing around world cost cheaper than paying it.
It wasn't just the tariffs but also the chance that the Ottomans could say "Nope!" at any time and stop the spice trade. This is also why at the time Portugal didn't bother creating real colonies in Africa. Those were to expensive to be worth it and they just needed the harbours for supplies.
Best ending to a Ludi video ever
Thanks Ludi, it's great to have European Brazil's history showcased like that!
LoL
Ludi can you do a guide on prussian space marines for 1.36 I love you so much.
18:35 Yes!
I would definitely watch a new estates vid
4:18... that name... a man of exquisite taste I see
please do a new estate video
It’s about to get META boys.
23:28 Yes, it was the trade Centre of America
29:32 Yes, we can see multiverse of Portuguese. They have many choices in 1444
I agree, they should allow for raid coast with the portuguese. It makes sense historically. But they would need to nerf it a bit.
all this time, I thought the private enterprise colony was a pirate enterprise
I'd still like to see some new stuff and some achievement runs/guides
Brasil mentioned 🎉
I've been always wondering, this bonus ,, trade power per ship in fleet" it's only for the said fleet not every trade ship you have right?
Ah and by the way, polish mission tree no longer has these two restoration CBs, since 1.36 it has become a little more complicated(there's restoration CB on Hungary I believe but also a little bit harder to get)
I am surprised that no one talks about name of Ludi's fleet 😂
Wheres the continuation for this ludi
Just as a labour of love. You are far more attractive and less goofy/nerdy looking without the attempted facial hair that didn’t really grow in. Much love from a man who is married for a second time across several countries. You have been a real source of joy x
I actually think Great Britain is the best colonising power, as with the stronger economy early on you can have (num colonists+2) colonies going at any time without breaking the bank. While also annexing the natives and subsidising the colonies
If you want to min-max it the Portuguese mission tree is optimized so that you can make bank from going far East and trade in spices. With that money you can outcompete everyone in the colonial game anyway, and the fact still remains that they're the only nation with a jump start on exploration without exploration ideas so you can go directly into expansion ideas. By the time anyone else is ready to explore and colonize you have a good 50-80 years advance as Portugal. So Britain is only superior from the mid-game onwards, which means you're gonna have to make war on other European powers for colonial supremacy.
@@admontblanc that doesn’t sound right really. Assuming you take Iceland in the Swedish war of independence you can get North America and Mexico while Portugal is faffing around in Brazil. I’ve even snatched the Caribbean
@LudietHistoria It would be most welcome if you did a new estates video 😊
As someone who didnt know there is an auto explore feature: The path past greenland is not weird at all. It is the only available path at the very beginning. It is literally impossible to sail straight to Brazil, before the age of exploration starts.
I love playing Portugal with their colonial path but i always struggle with man power an most importantly army limiti, trade company are excellent gor money but not for force limiti, that's why America's colonies are very important for portugal, anyway Portugal from an historical poin of view was much more focused on their African colonies and the east indies in general
Not entirely true. The East was initially more important because of the trade, but after the dual monarchy period under the Habsburgs, with Portugal losing dominance in the East to the Dutch, Brazil became their main colonial focus. African colonies were just trade and seaports from which their expeditions and trade fleets could be launched and supplied for all those long voyages, Portugal only started to invest in actual colonial development in Africa after losing Brazil. So their focus was always entirely pragmatic and adjusted towards their needs. Trade with the East made them filthy rich, then Brazil gave them a second surge after becoming 2nd rate in the East, and finally Africa became a lifeline after losing everything else.
32:05 I guess someone has watched the new Wonka movie
Noob question, does colonial range count just in explored provinces or does it ignore terra incognita?
Colonial range impacts the exploration for ships and for the colonist. Armies can always travel into terra incognita when you have a conquistador(non colonized lands) or are at war(near the war participants).
100% you did this (the ending) on purpose. And I'm here for it.
PS: i loved your romenia run 5 star
That look at 40:00... That moment you realized what you did ! Quite funny i'd say. Here take a thumb up
Mr Ludi, You are the best teacher of english language, but Your videos are even better
Can you do the Roman Empire with Italy starting Ambrosian Republic - Milan?
Why do u leave the maintanance in your troops up while not doing anythibg?
18:58 from where did you get that the portugueses did slave raids on the bereber? my understanding was that they did take prisoners to ranson
Nice
In Brazil, I always go for Bahia first. The great project is extremely useful, even at level 1. So it is the one in Tortuga and the one in Cartagena. Boriken is fine but very local.
Moving to Bermuda has never helped against creating colonial offshoots.
Which idea is better at the start of Portugal, Expansion or Exploration?
I always chose expansion for two colonists, but I don't have that many hours in the game so I had to ask(I guess one of the reasons is you can get diplo points easier as portugal)
edit: I've found my answer later in the video)
14:15 No... the Portuguese had already begun their explorations decades before the fall of Constantinople
Great run! I also hope that people will ask for a new 1.36 update for Estates. About allowing Portugal to be able to do raids for their slavery merchants, I think they should be limited to target "uncivilized" countries only.
For this particular video i need probably all expansions?
Making Europe all Blue using Portugal could be fun to watch. Using the riches of Colonialism to dramatically improve your military options perhaps, or maybe it makes more sense to make a junior partner out of Castille so you have a proper European military to rely on at home.
I started following along. And then Tlemcen drops from rival status and I would take a -2 stabilty hit to DoW
I started again. It wasn’t even an option. I started a third time and Tlemcen is an option. But Castile doesn’t like me too much 😂😂
If they let Portugal raid, then they should also allow Lithuania, as even with Jogaila himself was accused of slave raiding, even after he converted
A Brazzers run would be very nice ngl
Hey Ludi, have you ever thought trying a Nagaur run? Raja of the Rajput Reich achivement? I try it once, and i failed 😁. But i am shure you are capable of. I would like to see you triumph where i failed. Please Ludi give it a trie.

I´ve been playing eu4 for about 7/8 months and because of your videos I found out that playing vanilla gives the player way less diversity/option to try different things and, for me, makes a run more difficult than it could´ve been so, in your opinion, what are the best expansions/DLCs to have in order to improve my runs with different nations??
subscription i played without around 400h
Yeah i just use the subscription for when im playing eu4 regularly.
Subscription until eu5
at this point, is probably better to use the subscription, and just cancel it when you're not playing anymore, specially it's very posible that you'll have some periods were you'll not be playing the game.
@@diogomelo7897 Funny thing is, I didn´t even know there was a subscription of this kind, thanks for letting me know :)
All I do usually is I keep the natives, but I send out one infantry in each of the provinces im colonizing. Then I keep one or two cogs in the area and shuttle the infantry around to provinces once I start colonizing them. No need to break down armies to do this. One infantry can handle the natives in any province the new world, in my experience. the only exception would be the natives in the ivory coast node - but usually i colonize those places once I have unlocked the explo / expansion policy + given the native assimilation privilege to the clergy so they don't cause any problems.
i am totaly into strategie games like vitoria 3 or hearts of iron 4 but this game is just something else.. i really would like to play it but still after hours of trying i have no idea what i am doing :( Can you recommend a big indeep tutorial?

Plese Do a Colonial Bengal with playing tall.
Im still waiting for them to update italy
The Entire New World Next?
They didn't think the world was round since antiquity, lmao. There were certain philosophers from a few different cultures that hypothesized as much based on what later turned out to be faulty evidence (i.e. ships going over the curve is due to the limits of our view to the horizon), but it was never widely believed.
13:40 it takes the strange path because before you get "May recruit Explorers and Conquistadors" (basically first Exploration idea) you can't explore Ocean tiles, so you just stick to the coasts.
you scared the shit out of me because i'm eating my lunch i looked at you one time got a bite and out of nowhere you become hitle without the mustache
Come to Brazil ludi... Come to Brazil, we have cake!
Ludi could u do Novgorod guide again? Or the like goal isn't worth it since u did one part on novgorod before? Just curious not trying to insult in any way. Cheers from a 25 year old Serbian:)
