Dolly is the real deal. I saw her at her one-night-only show at Radio City Music Hall a few years ago. Literally everybody who was anybody was there: Jane Fonda, Isaac Mizrahi, Rupaul, Loretta Lynn, Anna Wintour, et al. She has fans of all stripes everywhere.
Thank you. Being a lifelong Dolly fan, it was great to see this for the first time. I've never seen Dolly so uncomfortable with an interviewer. The chemistry wasn't there - and she knew it. She held her own though. That's how professional she was and still is. She knew what she had to do, and what she'd have to encounter to get her brand out there. Too bad she had to endure a guy like this.
Agree in every way. She’s colder than pure gold. This was a terrible fit, whereas Carson was better able to get away with the boob jokes bc he obviously loved her.
@@scottlevine7646 Yes, and during Dolly's very first interview with Carson, he seemed to sense how nervous she was (you could see it on-camera), and he made a specific point of making her feel comfortable and welcomed, so that the interview would go smoothy. (That's why he was always regarded as the very best at what he did, and why Dolly always spoke so fondly of him through the years.) Merv, on the other hand, just comes off as smarmy and creepy. A few years later, I think Dolly would have found a classy, gracious way to throw his tackiness right back at him, but here, she still seems a bit overwhelmed by the splashy "showbiz" atmosphere, as it was all new to her, and she was more focused on that. Even Gloria Swanson seemed to be getting a bit annoyed with Merv.
Dolly is so intelligent and sweet. She looks absolutely gorgeous here. I wish she'd left her face alone. Why mess with perfection. Everybody loves Dolly. How could you not
Dolly handled Merv’s vulgar questions well. But nothing beats the way Dolly put that condescending Barbara Walters in her place during an interview! lol
She was amazing in so much, especially as a piano teacher in that film with Amy Irving and that curly haired one-note actor who somehow got famous.....Richard Dreyfuss.
I was no big fan of the late Merv Griffin. But would watch his show if he had a guest that interested me. My big thrill from this episode is watching that late great Lee Remick. So beautiful & so talented ! She left us much too soon. She was in the original Broadway run of the thriller "Wait Until Dark" (Audrey Hepburn did the role in the 1967 film version). And she did a wonderful job in the 1964 Broadway musical "Anyone Can Whistle". Her version of the title tune can be heard here at UA-cam. Absolutely exquisite ! Thank you VERY much for sharing with us ! CHEERS !! :-)
LEE REMICK is another RARE BREED. SHE IS BEAUTIFUL.CLASSY,INTELLIGENT,GREAT ACTRESS, LIKE HER VERY MUCH. LOVED THE OMAN WITH ANOTHER GREAT GREGORY PECK.
What a treasure trove of early New York-Hollywood movie history Gloria Swanson provides...while making it perfectly clear that she approached Kennedy for business backing but had a tough time eluding his personal advances. What a book.
Indubitably ! She mentioned in her 1980 autobiography ("Swanson on Swanson) that a doctor turned her onto a healthier way of eating way back in the 50s (plenty of fruits & vegetables, little or no refined flour or refined sugar, etc). She practiced healthy eating & fitness for the rest of her life. And it showed !
She also had plenty of healthy facelifts starting in the 1920s when she was Joe Kennedy’s kept actress. One before “Sunset Boulevard.” Please don’t take this as criticism because I do not judge; and I think you should be able to do whatever you want within the law to make yourself about yourself. After all, happy people make a happier world.
Dolly is so sweet and classy here and even decades later in her '70s now she is still a class act helping so many others what an absolute treasure! And OMG Gloria Swanson - born 1899 so she was at least 80 here and looking fabulous, one of the most celebrated actresses of the silent film era and reinvented herself in 1950's movie "Sunset Boulevard" - she was an icon before icons were even invented! To be watching this in 1980 was fantastic!
. Normally it can be annoying hearing a previous guest making noise or interjecting comments while the host is interviewing another guest, but for whatever reason, I LOVE hearing Dolly's endearing laugh coming from off-camera throughout Lee Remick and Gloria Swanson's appearances !! :-) .
Dolly's skin looks so pretty 😍, she's so funny, she replied I couldn't leave them home. She went on to reply none of your business. She's such a beautiful class act.
He is such an utter sleaze bomb. Poor Dolly. She must have been so happy when this intervlew was over. He constantly interrupts her and is only gearing up for the next sleazy question. But Dolly is always delightful.
I would have given anything to have a nice tall cup of matcha tea with Gloria Swanson and talk about the silent film days. Something tells me she would be a fantastic storyteller

I love Dolly she wos so honest in that interview i know many people made fun of her back than but like she said she like to look like that, and its nothing wrong with that, be yourself. She always back than in old interviews and in new i take her as a worm honest person, she handle his stupied questions very well. And sorry she was and is talented there is no doubght. Ok some films that she did wasnt super but she show good acting in them even if he doesnt have school. Everybody has dreams, and I am glad that her dreams came true. I am 38 and i love her i was small kid when i first sawe her in Steal Magnolias, there was no internet back then so i cut some things from press and OMG Jolien my grandpa singing me this song when i was little. I have so many totally different interest and Dolly her music is one of them i really respect her.
I agree with Dolly, it was crazy that she should sit there after her interview was over, big mistake Merv. She CLEARLY wanted to leave. That is why she asked after Lee left (plus it gave the impression of "more importance" of the other guest (being allowed to leave). Again, big mistake Merv, you should have let Dolly leave.
She learned this a long time ago. To handle idiots. Terrible being a woman back then, but she had that look and put it out there so.... But still a special soul.
. In my opinion, the GLORIOUS Lee Remick was one of the most beautiful actresses of ALL TIME, in addition to being an accomplished actress! Sadly though, she would be diagnosed with kidney cancer less than 10 years after this appearance (1989), and die on July 2, 1991, at only 55 years of age.... As a side note, if you want to see some of the most STUNNING blue eyes of all time, Image search the following: "Lee Remick eyes" .
Remick reported not too much feminism in England. I think that might have changed after Greenham Common, when English women gathered for days, maybe weeks, to protest an American arms base.
I saw Merv in person once. Total cold fish that completely ignored the audience except when on camera. When off camera, zero audience communication…..just smoking. Never even said hello to the studio audience. Total fraud. Dolly is totally real. Love seeing her here!
@@jubalcalif9100 ….and as you came into the show to be part of the studio audience, they would look at you to gauge how young and attractive you were. My parents were young and attractive, so we sat in the front. The main guest was David Soul, who had just been arrested for domestic violence, and ironically enough, the final guest was a woman who shot and killed her husband for beating her. We missed seeing Lucille Ball by one episode. Sigh.
I was 10 when this aired. I watched these shows all the time. He talked about Dolly's "gifts" for about five minutes. Way inappropriate. She handled it like the pro she always has been.
I really wish when he asked Dolly (about her breast size) why some women have it and some don't she'd have said "I dunno, Perv, why do some men have "it" and some don't?" What an asinine question (on multiple levels) even for the 80s.
