I really appreciate this film being presented in its entirety. Too often 5 or more minutes are missing. Thank you PizzaFlix! May the sauce be with you! 🍕🎥😃
What a wonderful movie. Great storyline, dialog, sets, clothing and actors. ALL of them. Mervyn Douglas was wonderful as always. Thank you so much for the opportunity to enjoy it.
Gloria Swanson's autobiography is a great read,, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning about her life, her time in early Hollywood and her theater work in both Paris and New York, as well as her nine marriages, and her dalliance with the senior Joe Kennedy. Asked by someone why she wrote her autobiography, she replied ''I thought I should write it before someone else did".
I had a cousin who had 4 or 5 marriages by the age of 32. Nobody was sure exactly how many. Bizarre to say the least. She seemed like a normal teen growing up. I will say she was cute and outgoing. And she was a part-time country singer last time I checked.
One of my treasured possessions is the uncorrected proof copy of SWANSON ON SWANSON, signed by her. According to the purchase record, it was her own review copy (impossible to verify, but I'll take the seller's word).
I thoroughly enjoyed it as well. I remember when she described how she got onto a very strict health food diet as a young woman and stayed with it all her life. But she tell the doctor/dietician that no way would she ever quit smoking and she didn't!
Swanson was pregnant at the time, however Mr. Goldwyn, the boss of the studio, wasn't aware of it. He had bought her entire wardrobe from Chanel of Paris, it cost him a fortune, but later they had to resize all the dresses because Swanson was getting heavier and they were too tight for her. Also this movie was Melvyn Douglas' first film ever in Hollywood, it's a gamble to pair a literally unknown face with one of the highest paid actresses of 1920s, but it paid off, epically for Douglas, it paved a path for his success as the suave leading man of 1930s.
Douglas never reached the front ranks in the '30's (he starred opposite Garbo in Ninotchka while Powell recovered from cancer), but his later career was superior, his wife was fascinating as well, starring in the fantasy She & later running for senate opposite Tricky Dick Nixon (she named him, if only we'd known). Douglas also fun in Whale's Old Dark House with Karloff.
Thank you is really too trivial an expression for what I feel. Sincere gratitude and appreciation. 🤩❤️ I haven’t enjoyed a film so much in a very long time. I have seen hundreds and hundreds of films in my lifetime, beginning with silent films but I never knew this one. I’ve seen several of Gloria Swanson’s films of the silent period and of course the incredible Sunset Boulevard. This was really stupendous. Melvyn Douglas was as always not to be outdone. He was in this film everything that he needed to be. And he never lost that quality even as an elderly actor. I was friends for more than 30 years with Myrna Loy and she often spoke of her great fondness, respect and admiration for Melvyn and also for his wife Helen. He was not only charming and handsome but a very fine human being something that was nice to know. Gloria Swanson was absolutely beautiful, and delightful in this film and of course her fame allowed her the right to choose who designed her clothes and from beginning to end she was magnificently attired by Coco Chanel. The quality of this film was astonishing thanks to its restoration, as well as the quality that was put into the film production, scenery, cast. Hollywood at its finest which makes one realise how far far down it has fallen.
Oh my gosh Melvin Douglas😘😘💕💕🥰😍😘🥳💙💙💙one of the most beautiful love scenes !! ..lovely gowns and settings.........love Gloria Swanson too she's darling ...one of my favorite movies now!!!!.
Melvyn Douglas is great , I love how his voice gets really high when he gets excited 😂 one of his funniest roles was in "Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House" with Myrna Loy and Cary Grant ❤
What a delight. The entire cast was great fun! Gloria Swanson beams. Her comic timing, carriage and delivery are all visible to me in a later great comedienne, Madeline Kahn.

Read this bio if you are a vintage movie buff, you'll be rewarded greatly with rich and sobering real life drama.
Thx! Will do😁! First time (remembering) her n a movie. WowsiDowser, is she one of the best or WHAT!?😊 Remembering, now, a movie about retiring films star from silent 2 talkies. Like her best n this movie. Well done ALL!
What a fantastic cast, and Gregg Toland's cinematography. And having worked in opera for a time made some of the jokes and characters even more entertaining, because they're true!
Well this movie has everything: drop dead handsome and suave Melvyn Douglas in his first film, gorgeous Gloria Swanson emoting all over the place in a Chanel wardrobe no less ( who knew she could sing?!) breathtaking sets including the reproduction of Venice canals, a little pre-code sex, snappy dialog, fantastic character actors, including J. Carol Nash in a small part as a radio announcer, and would you believe Boris Karloff as a waiter?! ( the same year as he did Frankenstein). All beautifully directed by the great Mervin Leroy. What's not to like?! 👍 A bit of trivia: the following year (1932) Douglas was again to play opposite Karloff (in a very different role) in director James Whale's "The Old Dark House" along with Charles Laughton, Raymond Massey and Gloria Stewart. One of my all time favorite spooky films.
About a year late getting to the picture show but so glad I made it. Swanson was quite the comedian. An iconic Hollywood star. One of Gloria's famous quotes: "I have decided that when I am a star, I will be every inch and every moment a star." Carol Burnett's Nora Desmond. Belated thanks PF
Melvyn Douglas would serve first as a great leading man in the 1930's, and in many other roles later in his career. Gloria Swanson was fun, and veteran Alison Skipworth even more fun. It has the high quality of a Samuel Goldwyn film, with a fine cast and crew, with men like Gregg Toland (one of the best cameramen ever), Alfred Newman's music and Mervyn Le Roy's direction. And a not-so-monstrous Boris Karloff, too.
Samuel Goldwyn had a sure eye for theatrical properties and stars. This light-hearted comedy deals well with the more serious, underlying themes. I wonder how an audience in 2023 would react to the comic moments.

Great quality print, and fun - if you don't take the characters too seriously: a self-centered prima donna with a touch of silent screen melodrama, a forceful leading man, and a fiancé who feels entitled to more than vanilla.
such a delightful movie, sweet music, with an old beautiful story. These were such romantic times, and movies will never be the same again. I was impressed by Gloria's clothes, especially because they were personally designed by Coco Chanel. The jumpsuit with pants from the beginning of the movie was the best ive seen designed for 1930s. I must say though that i really didnt like Gloria's acting. So melodramatic, as if she were still playing in silent movies and there were no sound. I cant understand why she received so much appreciation during her time, but maybe such big dramatic acts were really fashionable then. She was also not very beautiful, her face and even her body shape were not the best ive seen, so why was she so praised? Cant understand. Melvyn though played amazing for his debut acting role.
I have to agree though I do like her, especially in ' Sunset Boulevard '...but she always over acted. In Sunset Boulevard the over acting was a perfect fit.
