They said they were influenced by the Police during the recording of Power Windows and Signals. You can truly hear it in Alex's playing on this demo. Wow.
It cool to hear these songs without all the keyboards... it sound really "organic" and more straight-forward. Don't get me wrong, the recorded versions are amazing - Power Windows today is still one of my favorite Rush albums, but great to hear these song in the early stages.
This is just awesome! Like watching an artist painting a masterpiece, this gives you some insight into the creation process. I actually like the synth bells (?) at 0:18 and wish they had been retained. I can't wait to see them this summer, for the sixth time and it's just as exciting now as when I saw them on the GUP tour. I feel young again . . . .
Cool to hear rough versions. That second verse sounded almost like a pop song lol. From this u can really hear the basic framework that survived the final version, but how much they refined little details, sounds, and drum fills. Makes me appreciated how the keys were incorporated in various parts in final
I can't say I like this more than the album version. Interesting how the chorus didn't change much from this version. I like how Alex was trying a more "edgy" style in the first part of the song. Overall, it's good to hear some early versions of their songs.
Very cool to hear this demo, and is also a ringing endorsement for hiring a good producer. I have always been a huge fan of the Rush era from Hemispheres - Power Windows, and this is one of my favorite songs. It's just that this rendition of the song required a bit of revision, and thankfully the album version of this track got it.
Damn this is too f'n cool!!! This is probably top 3 Ruch album for me (and prob top 5 all time) so it's crazy to hear these. There's no doubting the authenticity, 100% Rush. Geddy's vocals are obviously not ripped. Very cool arrangement, don't know that I like it better though, it's just different. If they were reversed I'd probably say the same thing LOL!
This PW demo tape and many of the songs are good insight into one of The trends rock music was in the 80s. The album is very "Police" sounding, although I would go as far as to say that the Police exclusively invented "their sound." As usual RUSH sees the trends, what they like and inspires them, taking it to the next level.
The chord progression at :53 and the tone of Alex's guitar is very reminicent of "Time After Time" by Cindy Lauper. Never noticed that on the LP version.
This is amazing, I'm so excited to hear this demo cassete, PW is one of my favorite albums. It's just as good as album version, it's just different - for me maybe this one is a little bit better. Amazing.
Yes, I saw them in summer of 2010! My wife and children saw them, too. Taken together my family has seen Rush 12 times! I wish Rush would remix this song with about the first 35 seconds from this version put in.
I love this version, but it's kind of a mess in terms of musical style. I think the beginning, especially the DX7 interlude and lap steel sounding guitar, up until the 1:00 mark should have been what was on the album. The echoed vocals around 4:25 are neat as well. However the reggae stuff in the middle just doesn't fit the serious nature of the song; but, then again, neither does the video they play for concerts.
i see now, on these tapes there not as much synth as everyone complains about on this album ( idk why the album came out kick ass anyway) but its really clean cut i, guess thats the way u would put it..
The Big money I think was better without the synths but this one seems emptier without them over the guitar, I do love the opening bell synth jingle though, 80s melodic bliss!
WOW! Amazing bakwards guitar sound, the only time since Caress of Steel, If I'm not much mistaken . . . Or is it in fact also in the mix on the LP somewhere ??????
@wladj You being in radio for 12 years doesn't make you an expert on Demo tapes. If you had said you were a recording engineer I would give your comments a listen, but radio???? My butt cheeks could get a job in radio.

0:50 - this guitar note - it's so sad/desolate/ominous - it's something incredible - mystic and ethereal
WOW this sounds so Cyndi Lauper at 0:56 and I know her guitarist wound up on a few familiar artist's tracks! Lifeson could do it all.
That guitar tone . So sexy
Its incredible to hear this. This was basically a pop/reggae song before it became that PowerRock Epic! Amazing.
the guitar looks like inspiration of andy summer..the police

This is a lost gem. It's amazing.

wow so this is what developed into what we hear today? this is wild! especially since the final version on power windows is just ahhhh!!!!!
I remember picking up the album after school

The initial melody sounds too much like a circus music, good thing they changed it the master piece it ultimately became

Such an interesting version, it sounds more similar to Grace Under Pressure than one on the album

In this version there's "loyal to his nation" instead of "in each nation" :)
i always love hearing the riff from 0:00 to 0:18.

Wow, you can really hear the keyboard lines in the intro. Cool stuff; thanks for the upload.
Some bands try to make an album. Rush makes a demo. Game over.
Hermosa versión !!
nice job on cleaning this up, it was awfully rough before
I've listened to the demos so much...
I can't say which I like better?
Say's a lot about a group, eh?
wow its like a different version practically - if there is one rush song I want two of its this one

wladj i agree with you man ^^ *handsdown*
Just a demo. Sadly one of Alex's best. Too few will hear.
great
Hey Codackussell , yes, they do sound a little similar, but no. Listen at 0:43.

Why do you lie?
