  • In this series of videos, we cover making a multiple part fiberglass mold that will include threaded inserts
We are making a fiberglass mold of a Motorcycle fuel tank from a 1978 Kawasaki KZ650SR. This tank is very rare and hard to obtain.

I would love to see a series of videos on laying up the actual tank. Great series so far!

@@iccustomsusa8048 so the final tank is laid up as two halves (top tank and the tunnel) and then "glued" together? right?

yes I use cabosil and milled fibers with the vinyl ester resin.

You should make a video about how you now use the mold to make the tank. That’d be awesome

I wonder how you make thread for the gas cap did you use threaded insert too?, and what you use for glued together the upper and lower parts

@@benidida296 I use threaded insert as well for tank cap, when bonding the 2 halves. I use Vinyl-ester resin, milled fibers, and cabosil to make a paste that is applied to both seam surfaces generously. Tank halves are clamped together using “A” style clamps

Out of curiosity, when you lay up a tank; can it be done in one complete layup? Or do the top and bottom get layed up separately and bonded together? Hence the flange…

    • @iccustomsusa8048

Lay up is separate halves are joined via flanges with vinyl ester

Not necessary If your fuel does not contain ethanol. Ethanol is bad for certain plastics and polyester resins is known to be affected. Vinyl esters are not as affected.

Amazing videos as always, though i have concerns about the longevity of the tank being full fiberglass. From whst I've seen and heard, fiberglass and gasoline, especially newer forumlas with ethanol, dont mix too well. Do you have a treatment that you use inside the tank after its complete? Beautiful work, i wish i had half the talent thst you do for composite work, but I've bot done much of it and had a very bad experience with it when i was 17 years old that scared me off from wanting to attempt again. I didnt use PPE and almost made my hands into plugs for fiberglass gloves... I tried everything to get it off before restoring to pouring gasoline on my hands to remove it.
Pre-posting edit, I'm still watching the video and you just mentioned an ethonal resistant epoxy.

You should attempt again Acetone removes resins with ease. Also I you are into custom projects fiberglass had very large advantages. As for tank construction I don’t use polyester resin for tank layup I use vinyl ester a better choice for fuels and a epoxy sealer to prevent wicking.

It would make sense seeing as you are making these videos to show how you are layering the fibreglass not just explaining about it and showing the finish product would be helpful Are you the person that is actually making these parts?
