Video games don't get the praise they deserve. I met my husband because of video games. We met up at EGX 2012 and the rest is history. I have made incredible friendships through video games, FFX2 helped me escape an abusive relationship for a few hours a day, games like Minecraft have helped my godson become more creative and helped his anxiety.

This is the reason why Videogame is my favorite form of media. It's more engaging and more exciting, because you are the one who's doing the cool things. It makes you feel like a badass or the smartest person alive, if you solve a puzzle or trick the A.I. or something. It is the combination of so many other medias, music, video, animation, writing. It's just great.

Totally agree, I read too and enjoy it and listen to loads of music but I struggle watching films because I get lost with characters, their motivations, the subplots of a film, or I might figure some of it out later on in the film but I'm past the part where I got lost then, with a game you can go at your own pace and can soak the world in, one of the best games I've ever bought was Witcher 3 Wild Hunt for £20, total bargain! I agree with this, and it is one of the reasons I tell people they should play the games instead of watching someone on UA-cam play a story-driven, deeply rich world game. Another example I would like to add is games like the soul series allow you to have a different type of storytelling only possible with video games where you get to help tell the story and make your own story along the way, you get to interpret the world and in a word make your mark on that world. No other medium of entertainment can do this and it’s why I love video games, especially the Souls-borne games.

Rob you have reminded me of why I love and cherish video games with all my soul. I went through a rough patch last year and for the first time in my life I wasn’t enjoying any game I was playing. It was honestly one of the most heartbreaking things to happen to me in my life. The reason why it was so heartbreaking is because I have played them my whole life and they have shaped me into the person I am today. I even plan/dream to become a videogame graphic designer. I struggled with my happiness for what felt like ages and In the past when the world got me down I would play video games to escape this dark cold reality that preceded me. Since then, I still struggle with my mental health but Videogames will always resound in my heart! Watching your Friday Features during that period of my life helped me get out of the mucky feeling and mood I found myself consumed by. Thank you!! This Friday feature was terrific and brilliant as always.

#6 is my favorite part about games. Especially when you do something really cinematic (and preferably unscripted) like getting into a dogfight in space and flying through massive explosions in Everspace, or landing those perfect cumbersome but powerful strikes in Monster Hunter World, or pulling off the perfect series of stealth kills. It just makes you feel awesome as it's an experience unique to you, whereas other media simply don't have that.

Maybe it’s a common thing but if I find a sword or a horse or a certain trinket or numerous other things, I’ll keep it. Nothing wrong with that, but as I use it more and more, I gain a fondness for this thing. For me it was my cattlemen revolvers in RD2. When I got the cash I fully upgraded it and customised it to how I wanted it.
I would use it to hunt a few smaller animals, or fight off robbers, but as I used it more and more, it became less of a weapon and more of a partner. If I was ever caught in a tough spot I could pull out my trusty revolver and I knew it had my back. I would of course use my rifles or shotguns but I always defaulted back to that single revolver. Even the twin guns didn’t interest me.

You missed an incredibly huge thing. You aren't just watching a movie, you're experiencing a world. You kind of covered it, but what I mean is: You aren't just turning up watching the hero develop then do the thing we all hoped for, you get to go around that corner and see what was there, you get to see the world as you see fit. You can go do that side quest and potentially expand on the atory or a character.
You aren't just there to witness a certain string of events, you get to see the hero fail (game over), decide a love interest and who to shun/kill, you can do the things that enable you to posses something that is either irrelevant or that you aren't meant to.
It's a world to experience, not a story to witness what you're told to.

Imagine watching someone read for fun. Twitch and the like would not have the draw they do now. That commentary was great though 😆

Speed reading is a thing there was an infomercial in us in 90s. That sold a system that taught you how to speed read

My now husband and I played Destiny for “dates” because we were in a long distance relationship. Almost three years later we like to set up our TV’s side by side and play Destiny, get some take out, and have an at home date. I’ve met several great friends playing games too, along with some really awesome people.

I liked point 6 - we often say, "I won the race." or "We killed that monster!" when describing video games. But it made me think of a type of visual media where people do this. I often hear football fans speak in first person, "We were a man down and you scored on the penalty but we scored twice in extra time!"

A combination of a couple of the things mentioned - I am really attached to the people in my Switch and Pocket Camp friendlists, even though I know nothing about them, have never spoken to them, and most likely will never meet them; they are on my friendlist so they are my friends!
I have so many stories about getting attached to things and people in video games, it happens constantly. For instance, I once spent an hour reloading saves in Skyrim in a desperate bid to save my horse from a dragon attack. Nothing I did prevented his death and I never could bring myself to buy another horse

Making friends...spot on. I was a bit late to the online party but there was a PS3 gaming thread that I followed on Amazon. Real mix of gaming genres, but my game favourites at the time were Battlefield Bad Company 2, Uncharted 2 and COD MW2. People from that thread would talk games, game together and there was even an U2 night on Wednesdays (which is now simply called Wednesday Night Gaming). Anyhow the point I want to make is that someone came up with the idea of meeting in London for the games expo. Some actually went to the Expo but most of us skipped that and headed for a pub near the Strand. Well what a diverse bunch we were. Boys and girls, young and old (I'm in the latter grouping), hailing from the north/south/east/west. We introduced ourselves using our gaming tag, so it was definitely a bit surreal using tags in conversations. Gaming was much more satisfying after having put faces to names (of if not names then tags), and we made the meet up an annual event, at least for a few years.

Most of these are things tabletop roleplaying game does as well. The story changes every time, you're the one acting, the game itself is the communal activity and they make you care about things that aren't real. They can also ask you to put in more to get more out of it, whether that's investing a lot more effort into the storytelling and characterization or trying to come up with a more powerful build to overcome the challenges the GM places before you. Arguably, they do most of these things more than video games sense you aren't limited to what the developers accounted for and added either cutscenes or systems to represent.

Speed reading is absolutely a thing. I remember my brother and his friends competing to see who could read through the most Harry Potter books in a single day. (They stopped right around when Half-Blood Prince was released, though).

To expand on your last point, it’s even better when it’s a character you actually get to make. Case in point, GTAV online. The characters we make are, by design, projections of ourselves. So when you manage to evade a 5 Star wanted level, or pull off a heist, or buy a car, or whatever, there is literally only one barrier keeping the sentence “I just stole a cool million from a huge bank” from actually applying to us

This list is literally everything I WANT to say to people that don't understand why I think videogames are easily the best form of media, but don't because none of these make any real sense unless you've experienced it first hand.

Re: relaxing within a game: There are actually some really good studies on the effect of realistic images (like water) in a game. Looking over realistic water, in visuals and sound, within a game has the same effect on the brain as if you're doing it IRL--similar hormone releases, etc. This is the same even when you actively know it's "not real". So, relaxing within a game has similar effects as doing so outside. (When I was severely depressed, I'd go fishing in WoW just to feel more normal). The caveat to this is, of course, stress within a game is *also* the same as if you're experiencing it in the outside world, so handle with care. :)

Hate to burst your creative bubble, but you do realize speed reading is a thing. I've been speed reading since I'm a kid. Used to piss my teacher off quite a bit. "Students, for today read chapters 3 & 4." 5 minutes later, "Fred, why aren't you reading?" "Read it." "No you didn't." "Ask me any question about them." "GO TO THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE!!"

Suggestion: Video games allow/force you to earn the content. Books and music and movies allow for inspection and deep understanding. But if I’ve bought a book or tune or dvd there is nothing stopping me from skipping ahead to the end of this content to consume and experience it as I see fit. Cause, y’know, I bought the damn thing! Games are the only ones that completely block off vast swathes of your own property until the game has decided that you have narratively or skillfully earned it.
