  • This tree fell across a trail after being hit by lighting, this video just shows the tree and a little bit of my time in the woods working on it. Not super detailed, just showing what I had time to film.
    Thanks.

    The lumber appears to be so much better than I would have imagined.

      Yes, it came out very nice. Got a bunch of 2x10's and 2x4's that will be used in framing part of my sawmill building.

    Fantastic video! Lots of great work getting done, great display of what lightning can do to a tree and best of all, someone who knows how to work with wood is harvesting wood to use rather than letting it rot. I have wrestled around with and dug under some big logs to get a strap around them and you aren’t kidding when you say that tractor makes a huge difference. Great job and great content as always! Keep up the good work and may God continue to bless you and your family.

    I like tractors - seem to be sturdy and dependable machines. My grandfather had one that was probably as old as he was. Old and rusty but just kept on functioning.

    I read the trees splits open because the moisture is instantly turned into steam and literally blows the trunk apart.

    Cant believe you still have that truck,lol. I just haven't seen it in a while. You still do any of your woodwork? You made some really nice farm tables over the years. I'd love to see ya venture into some other woodworking. You're quite talented and seemed to enjoy it.

    Not that you are in need of more projects lol... but building a log arch for skidding logs may be a good future option for your operation.

    Wonderful property and you really seem to enjoy yourself there, just curious why you don’t go ahead and move into the brick house and rent your current one out?

    Just more of a reason the mill building wrapped up so you can spend more time milling. Then you can start stacking some nice pieces for future projects.

    I can see how it could be a dangerous one to fell. You mention worrying about the split area. In hindsight, I wonder if it would have helped to wrap the split with nylon strap before felling it.

    You do have a lot of natural resources for firewood. It should serve you well for the next 50 some odd years. I will be taken it on the chin the next several months. I do budget billing on Natural Gas. My next six months bills will increase 130% from 8 months ago. I am planning to sell my townhome and move to the NC mountains. I am planning on buying property that has good wood resources. It may take a season or two to get the reserves up (cut wood and drying) but I can always buy until then. Tired of being held hostage by the Power and Gas companies.

      Its hard to always have dry wood, i try to split it up smaller when i want it dry faster, woods like polar will dry faster too vs oaks.

      I have a heat pump in my house plus a woodstove, i burn the wood as much as possible but when i’m really busy or not home, the heat pump kicks on and takes care of it. It’s a balance, burning wood is a lot of effort, but is “free”. the heat pump is not free but couldn’t be easier.

      @@thehomesteadcraftsman8975 I know I am going to need AC to so I am going to go with some type of split system heat pump. I may try to run it off of solar power but when you look at the cost factor it is not "free" either.

    • @thehomesteadcraftsman8975
      @thehomesteadcraftsman8975  Рік тому +1

      I think solar is more of a wealthy man’s game to have an amount plus the storage to run a house. I’ve never met someone that could not afford to pay an electric bill that could afford a solar set up. I’m in no way against the idea but you are not going to be in a house with the ac on, baking a cake, microwaving ramen noodles, making toast, frying bacon all at the same time without having spent as much as it cost to buy a house. Where i see it working for the average guy is someone with an off grid set up of sorts and just wants to run a few lights and charge stuff, then it’s a wonderful thing that can be bought pretty cheap and easily set up.

    • @lockedin60
      @lockedin60 Рік тому +1

      @@thehomesteadcraftsman8975 You can but it will cost you a lot of money. If I use solar it want be the only power source. You still need electric for most things. I don't know still collecting information. Solar is not cheap for sure.

    Short video? I had to fast forward 90% of it as "what was that all about?" A 13 yrs old could have done the same pulling a log on absolutely flat terrain ...
