I was out using the FX3 to film my kids tennis match yesterday. Even in the warm sun, it performed perfectly shooting 4K/60. The FX3 is a seriously capable stills camera too. It’s quickly becoming my favorite camera of all time.
I ordered an FX3 and am waiting for the EV1 to come out. The FX3 will be A cam and the EV for flying. My cutaway rig is an old 6100 which I may replace with an FX30. I got nervous about the overheating reports on the EV1. Can't have that. Love the stabilization on the EV1 and how light it is. I'm shooting for weight reduction.
That is exactly what I was thinking. I can just get an fx30 for dedicated long video stuff, and zve1 for run and gun video stuff, and keep my A7iv as backup.

I'm considering upgrading from my Sony a6400 to a full-frame camera, and I'm facing a dilemma: whether to spend more and get the FX3 or save money and go for the ZV-E1, getting pretty much the same image but with the remaining funds invested in more lenses, etc? I shoot a variety of content, from events to weddings, so my direction is quite diverse. I really want to upgrade and start to make more professional videos, but I’m kinda stuck between these two and don’t know what to choose.
I just bought the zv-e1 6:00 - but I can't seem to make Focus Breathing COmpensation work in the 120p 4k mode. Is this not possible? I can't find anything on the sony website that says that it shouldn't work...
I think the ZV-E1 is a game changer for me. Whenever I get the ZV-E1, I will be keeping my FX30. My plans are to use my FX30 in warmer environments, and use the ZV-E1 in interior and cooler environments. Regarding the single SD card slot, it's not an issue with me. For me, it's the quality of the SD card brand that matters most. I've used the SanDisk Extreme cards for years with no issues or fails. I will never touch Lexar cards, as I've only heard bad news about them more than any other brand. Silly me, I filmed a feature film using one card in a GH5. But, nothing went wrong. Was I pushing my luck? Can't say, as I've yet to experience a card failure. In the end, I think the ZV-E1 looks like a great camera and I want it. Very handsome review and comparison video.

I think you should look at the fx30. It's an APSC camera like the d3200 and d3400 but it's amazing for video, will not overheat, and has two card sloths. You could also look at the full frame A7IV if you don't need 4k120
because most monitors and accessories that ask for the Audi/video output do not accept USB-C. HDMI and SDI are usually used for Audi/video transfer with cameras to connect to gear. So on the zv-e1, you’ll still be using the hdmi for connection, and a full size one is better. You can use the usbc for streaming though in limited ability. (no picture profiles, or log output)

Mini HDMI Slot - so no Ninja V or Monitor. 4K 120 only in the future. Overheating? Seems to be an issue. So, I will stick with my A7SIII, FX30 and A7C. Thanks for your great work!
Does clear image zoom on the ZV allow you to use APS-C lenses in a way similar to the IV? That'd be a major plus. Would also love to see overheating tests of the ZV-E1 using something like the third party fan coolers made for the A6500 (with a thermal pad?).
I have noticed that Sony has flashing on and off when the settings need to be changed. I see it on mine A7c all of the time. So I get tired of seeing this so I put it on Auto then forget about it. 😊
I'll check it when it arrives - but since you can't do it on any of the Sony's I have - I'm not holding my breath. Hopefully, you'll be able to custom key it to the new touch screen.

Question, on my ZV-E1, if I'm in very low light, the camera going between ISO10k and 12.8k is jarring, the image keeps flickering between beautiful/clean and super noisy. Does this also happen on the FX3 or is this a ZV-E1 specific issue? -- Any advice for that other than setting the ISO manually?
this would be the same on the fx3 if you’re using auto iso because the 2nd base iso is 12,800 so the image will clean up. it’s best if you’re close to that level to manually set it as 12,800 for the best results.

the battery lasts about 90 mins, but you can plug in a usb power bank and get at least 5 hours (because the battery still drains slowly while powered by usb)

I saw another channel use a DC computer fan(1.5"in size) with a little battery. He claims it helps cool the cameras. Do you still have the ZV-E1? I wish channels would have experimented with fans to see if that worked. Another idea is an insulated cage for hot days, with the fan. The compact size of the ZV-E1 is a selling point. I can literally put it in my jacket pocket and forget about it. Or pants pocket with lens separate. On occasions where I might want to record longer, I would love to find custom solutions. One solution to not being water sealed is an UMBRELLA! :) I am not water sealed either so if I am using a camera in the rain, I will have an umbrella. Perhaps a small coldshoe mount umbrella.
@Mark Bennett's Camera Crisis yea but £2200 is a professional price and they gave us the 4k60 framerate with a 4k120 on the way, just remember it was unacceptable for Canon to give us 8k that overheated within 30 minutes so 4k60 is unacceptable, it's a camera for the fan boys who don't question anything
You forgot to mention that ZV-E1 has the Anti-Flicker option in video mode, which is basically a variable speed option which the FX3 (a "cinema camera") doesn't even have (even after Update 3.0). As a videographer and FX3 owner, I wish I had most of the options listed on the right... I just can't wrap my head around Sony's decisions to not include some of these options in the latest firmware update. Guess we'll have to wait for a FX3mkII and pay the big price again.
Idk abt the zv-e1 was pretty disappointed but I am coming from lumix, Mechanical shutter and Cooling not being present for 2000$ is ridiculous and the image quality is mid, you just are easily distracted by the full frame effect, I imagine an apcs with a prime wouldnt be far off, Mainly the clear image zoom isnt as good as its hyped up, I imagine the lumix 6k to 4k crop isnt bad, but this is mid at best. Unless you need 4k120 fps (Id be happy with the cropped 4k 60 on lumix and post slomow) Not worth the price tag and I spent 1500$ on it. If you will apply noise reduction or neat video might as well get anything else than the zv-e1, I think the fx-30 may even be worthy the penny in comp to the zv-e1 but still if they give the same image quality Id rather leave both and get the lumix s5ii with weather sealing and mech shutter plus raw capabilities via upgrade when you are ready. Neat video Plus primes, and most importantly the 6k-4k sensor crop will be much better than clear image zoom, meaning auto framing is a pointless feature, which I could only get to work Kind Of. Waste of money flat out and I spent 700$ less than store price. I will buy the s9 to compare my self but its almost sure and certain. I feel like sonny just packed this with gimmicks, Id go for the fx30 or their highest MegaPixel FF and nothing else they have so many cameras it's obvious they are cash grabbing. The Zv-e1 over heating is also not improved like people claim, I get 10 mins best this camera is false hype for days. Banding was awful on it in my work shop so I can even vlog in my space

I wanted to love sony but It cant even produce green as well so grass looks muted. Way to over priced. Auto framing barely even starts or works the way I hoped, so its easier in post. Sony feels like a gimmick wish I got the fx30 if anything but at this point I have zero faith in sony for what I bought into them for. If it was under 1000$ no complaints but I spent 1500$ on this, more than all my drones combined and its MiD at best Id still rather use my iPhone than the sony At worst for the zv-e1, weather proofing can be handled with a silicone case for minor improvements, but Sony is over priced for what a lumix can give you, a nikon, and black magic. I think at the end of the day Lumix with the 6k zoom is much better meaning I can use the one 20-60 lens and go from 20mm to 35mm with the sensor keeping a wide aperture. The sony is just too low quality for the price, once you see HQ you cant go back and again, this isn't 1000$ its much more. I will test the S9 and have a better answer, but I expect the Banding to be bad so I might get the S5ii but I have a good deal for the s9 with a 20-60 for 1200$ I spent 100$ for the zv-e1 with a 28-70 Cannot do wildlife at all on the sony, just dogs, clear image isnt too HQ, buying a lens doesnt make sense given the image quality isnt as good as my $500 mft camera Sure it doesnt matter if you make content thats fast paced with many scenes, But I am spending my hard earned money on things UA-camrs Sell Me on more than anything and one else. This is more than One PayCheck and feels like it shouldn't even be half. Phones in 5 years will be so HQ that these will be a waste of money then, but now, I need something that looks as though its 5 years ahead, sony is steps back in that category, my iPhone photos look better, no matter how bad I break that its 100-300 to fix and even cheaper to upgrade. These are supposed to be investments, but we have to convince our selves they're good enough, but I need to be comfortable doing the work and satisfied when I go home to edit. Luimix lets me do it all on the go much better ( sure you can upload your videos via drive and use MoonLight Game stream and edit with your pc on the go, or davinci on the tablets ) But with the single setup I can go so much further and save money. Also Lumix does good updates, they unlocked 4:2:2 on a lumix g9 I wonder what they can update the newer cameras to later down the line. you can still use the Ninja - you just need a micro HDMI port to Full size. I do it all the time with my other cameras.

Question, on my ZV-E1, if I'm in very low light, the camera going between ISO10k and 12.8k is jarring, the image keeps flickering between beautiful/clean and super noisy. Does this also happen on the FX3 or is this a ZV-E1 specific issue? -- Any advice for that other than setting the ISO manually?
this would be the same on the fx3 if you’re using auto iso because the 2nd base iso is 12,800 so the image will clean up. it’s best if you’re close to that level to manually set it as 12,800 for the best results.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis I see, if I understand correctly Cine EI is a way to work around this on the FX3, but unfortunately this is missing on the ZV-E1 that only has Flexible ISO.
When I first held the FX3 first thing I noticed was I wish the screen was larger The screen to camera body ratio feels off everything else 100%

you can yes. it will go into apsc crop mode and give you a 24mm look (same as on an apsc camera)
I know this is random but how long does the battery last on the zv e10 asking for future podcaster
the battery lasts about 90 mins, but you can plug in a usb power bank and get at least 5 hours (because the battery still drains slowly while powered by usb)

I saw another channel use a DC computer fan(1.5"in size) with a little battery. He claims it helps cool the cameras. Do you still have the ZV-E1? I wish channels would have experimented with fans to see if that worked. Another idea is an insulated cage for hot days, with the fan.
The compact size of the ZV-E1 is a selling point. I can literally put it in my jacket pocket and forget about it. Or pants pocket with lens separate.
On occasions where I might want to record longer, I would love to find custom solutions.
One solution to not being water sealed is an UMBRELLA! :) I am not water sealed either so if I am using a camera in the rain, I will have an umbrella. Perhaps a small coldshoe mount umbrella.
they never sent me a zv-e1, but I have one on order. iPhonedo used to always use a fan with his a6300 back in the day - so it definitely could work.
Pros shooting anything in 4k60 might aswel use a phone as it over heats after a few minutes outdoors
you definitely want an fx30 or fx3 if you're professionally shooting and want to use the higher frame rates,
@Mark Bennett's Camera Crisis yea but £2200 is a professional price and they gave us the 4k60 framerate with a 4k120 on the way, just remember it was unacceptable for Canon to give us 8k that overheated within 30 minutes so 4k60 is unacceptable, it's a camera for the fan boys who don't question anything

Overheating is enough reason for picking the FX3 over the plastic overheating ZV-E1. At least for 70% of the earth's population.

You forgot to mention that ZV-E1 has the Anti-Flicker option in video mode, which is basically a variable speed option which the FX3 (a "cinema camera") doesn't even have (even after Update 3.0). As a videographer and FX3 owner, I wish I had most of the options listed on the right... I just can't wrap my head around Sony's decisions to not include some of these options in the latest firmware update. Guess we'll have to wait for a FX3mkII and pay the big price again.

Idk abt the zv-e1 was pretty disappointed but I am coming from lumix, Mechanical shutter and Cooling not being present for 2000$ is ridiculous and the image quality is mid, you just are easily distracted by the full frame effect, I imagine an apcs with a prime wouldnt be far off, Mainly the clear image zoom isnt as good as its hyped up, I imagine the lumix 6k to 4k crop isnt bad, but this is mid at best. Unless you need 4k120 fps (Id be happy with the cropped 4k 60 on lumix and post slomow)
Not worth the price tag and I spent 1500$ on it.
If you will apply noise reduction or neat video might as well get anything else than the zv-e1, I think the fx-30 may even be worthy the penny in comp to the zv-e1 but still if they give the same image quality Id rather leave both and get the lumix s5ii with weather sealing and mech shutter plus raw capabilities via upgrade when you are ready.
Neat video Plus primes, and most importantly the 6k-4k sensor crop will be much better than clear image zoom, meaning auto framing is a pointless feature, which I could only get to work Kind Of.
Waste of money flat out and I spent 700$ less than store price.
I will buy the s9 to compare my self but its almost sure and certain.
I feel like sonny just packed this with gimmicks, Id go for the fx30 or their highest MegaPixel FF and nothing else they have so many cameras it's obvious they are cash grabbing.
The Zv-e1 over heating is also not improved like people claim, I get 10 mins best this camera is false hype for days. Banding was awful on it in my work shop so I can even vlog in my space
turn you internal temp to high and open the screen. Mine runs for 90 mins in 4k 24p
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis I even have the fans, but this isnt the mpve. albiet overheating isnt my breaking point, low light is, I will buy the s9 next paycheck any test them, for the price I need a pixel peepers satisfaction. plus i can 6k30 fps zoom into a 2-60 lens much better than clear image zoom, I mean that alone was a major selling point of the sony and its so low quality in comparison to my MFT lumix... I wanted to love sony but It cant even produce green as well so grass looks muted. Way to over priced. Auto framing barely even starts or works the way I hoped, so its easier in post. Sony feels like a gimmick wish I got the fx30 if anything but at this point I have zero faith in sony for what I bought into them for. If it was under 1000$ no complaints but I spent 1500$ on this, more than all my drones combined and its MiD at best

At worst for the zv-e1, weather proofing can be handled with a silicone case for minor improvements, but Sony is over priced for what a lumix can give you, a nikon, and black magic.
I think at the end of the day Lumix with the 6k zoom is much better meaning I can use the one 20-60 lens and go from 20mm to 35mm with the sensor keeping a wide aperture.
The sony is just too low quality for the price, once you see HQ you cant go back and again, this isn't 1000$ its much more.
I will test the S9 and have a better answer, but I expect the Banding to be bad so I might get the S5ii but I have a good deal for the s9 with a 20-60 for 1200$

Cannot do wildlife at all on the sony, just dogs, clear image isnt too HQ, buying a lens doesnt make sense given the image quality isnt as good as my $500 mft camera
Sure it doesnt matter if you make content thats fast paced with many scenes,
But I am spending my hard earned money on things UA-camrs Sell Me on more than anything and one else. This is more than One PayCheck and feels like it shouldn't even be half.
Phones in 5 years will be so HQ that these will be a waste of money then, but now, I need something that looks as though its 5 years ahead, sony is steps back in that category, my iPhone photos look better, no matter how bad I break that its 100-300 to fix and even cheaper to upgrade.
These are supposed to be investments, but we have to convince our selves they're good enough, but I need to be comfortable doing the work and satisfied when I go home to edit. Luimix lets me do it all on the go much better ( sure you can upload your videos via drive and use MoonLight Game stream and edit with your pc on the go, or davinci on the tablets )
But with the single setup I can go so much further and save money. Also Lumix does good updates, they unlocked 4:2:2 on a lumix g9 I wonder what they can update the newer cameras to later down the line.
