People accuse Rowland of singing flat (and they`re not exactly wrong), but I rather think that Rowland WANTED to sound flat. He WANTED to sound zonked and beat-out and morbid and haunted, and like he was reeling on his feet. That was his whole aesthetic. So in that respect, this song is a success. I really do think it`s a great cover. It just impresses me so much that he`d think to cover `Don`t Explain`, which is such an incredible dark pained haunting song to begin with. I think the song suits him so well. RIP Rowland; I`ll never forget you.
Hush now, don't explain Just say you'll remain I'm glad you're back, don't explain Quiet, don't explain What is there to gain Skip that lipstick Don't explain You know that I love you And what love endures All my thoughts of you For I'm so completely yours Cry to hear folks chatter And I know you cheat Right or wrong, don't matter When you're with me, sweet Hush now, don't explain You're my joy and pain My life's yours love Don't explain
Been listings to this on repeat. Howard totally nails the emotions of the song and the way he delivers the lines "All my thoughts are all of you/ Because I'm so completely yours" is so earnest it feels like I'm listening in on a private conversation between him and a lover. Considering how painfully vulnerable he could be in his music and his performance of tracks like this which swell with genuine heartbreak, it makes sense that he dropped out of the scene eventually and struggled to free himself from the seductive numbness of heroin. How many times can you rip your heart open for an audience before you need to retreat to lick your wounds? I don't think it is any coincidence that Rowland Howard and Billie Holiday met similar ends.
Hush now don't explain Just say you'll remain I'm glad you're bad Hush now don't explain. Hush now don't explain You're my only joy and pain Skip that lipstick Hush now don't explain You know that I love you And what loving does All my thoughts are all of you Beacause I'm so completely yours. If folk chatter And of course you cheat Right or wrong don't matter When I'm with you sleep. Hush little baby don't you cry I'll never go away.
Oh, I HAVE swooned. I've been swooning over this song every day for the past three weeks, or thereabouts. And oh, I KNOW Rowland is holy. And I know he carries a generation of love. We'll always love him, won't we? By the way, I think you're a great writer.
This isn't going to age.

The saddest song ever
Hush now, don't explain
Just say you'll remain
I'm glad you're back, don't explain
Quiet, don't explain
What is there to gain
Skip that lipstick
Don't explain
You know that I love you
And what love endures
All my thoughts of you
For I'm so completely yours
Cry to hear folks chatter
And I know you cheat
Right or wrong, don't matter
When you're with me, sweet
Hush now, don't explain
You're my joy and pain
My life's yours love
Don't explain
