- I believe there is some confusion out there as to what a Macro is vs what a Template is. It seems that some in this industry think they need Templates when they actually need Macros and vice versa.
Today I explain the differences and pros/cons. I also mention a couple of techniques I use to build estimates that I didn't fully demonstrate in the video as I have past videos for you to view.

As an adjuster, I really appreciate you putting your estimate in the same order as the adjusters. Personally, I have an Blank ESX file that I merge with projects I receive through XactAnalysis. That's my template, but it doesn't add any line items, just the folders. Typing ________ Elevation 1,000,000 times sucks. I add my sketches' and drop the macros. I've been watching you and adjusting for 4 years and you greatly helped my career, THANK YOU!!!
Great tip Joshua! I love the template idea to save time - brilliant advice!
Nice videos. Thank you for the information.
Thank you. Glad they're helping.
Thank you...
Oh my god thank you so much. Coming from a remediation tech to estimator.
😊 So glad you found it helpful!
High I bought the grouping macro packet last year and some how it went to word and now I cant open it but the main problem is there's no puff of purchase What should I do?
How can I get my line item notes to save in my macros? I've created a Macro but the attachment notes I've attached to some of the line items are not showing up? Any ideas?
I know this sounds like a dumb question, but are you checking the box "Save Notes" when saving and naming the Macro?
I just want to say I am not an adjuster, and I don't work for a big company with red shirts and khaki pants that now hates paying for full roofs. {shameless disclaimer so I don't get fired}. Having said that, thank you for your videos, they are awesome!!
Ha! Thanks Richard! I'm so glad you're finding my videos helpful. 😊
You are great. Do you have a system video on how you send in a report to adjuster when pricing don't match and extras are needed
Do you typically add O&P on mitigation estimates? If so do you run into problems with carriers when doing so?
Great question Evan! It's a matter of....are you using in house subs or are you subbing the work out? Some GC's sub out the miti and write the estimate, therefore O&P is owed for them overseeing the work. If your crews are doing the work, then the O&P for subs is already included on the line items per Xactware's O&P whitepaper. Does that help?
@@EstimateMastery It does! Thank you
Ed,
ALL business have overhead expenses and deserve an honest profit. The complexity of a project or using a sub contractor has no relevance regarding O&P. The overhead expense differs from company to company and is no industry standard for O&P regardless what the carriers say. The carrier will claim 10&10 as the industry standard because they don’t allow their preferred vendors to charge any more than that and try to hold non vendors to that same standard. We charge 15% for our overhead and gets approved 90% of the time. The problem is when the carriers require you to follow their estimating standards it it turns the industry into a one price system essentially fixing costs. These industry will not grow responsibly if our estimators don’t change their way of thinking. There’s a huge difference between an Exactimator and an estimator. I’ve been working as a contractor for 38 years and used my job site experience when I write estimates. My construction practices have been tried and tested from Craftsman I learned from and the experience I gained on my own. I’ve written insurance repair estimates using Exactimate for the past 4 years. I’ve been able to blend the two style of writing coupled with my experience to produce ethical and complete estimates with little to no supplements at the end. Although I think Xactimate is a great platform you can not relay on using line items alone. adjuster will push you to use a line item rather than T&M to control cost. At the end of the day you are responsible for your companies health. Write good detailed and ethical estimates and stand behind them. Learn as much as you can about “Real construction practices” and apply that to your estimates. Let’s be real, in all of my years on constructions site I’ve never once heard a fellow tradesman say “I want to get out of construction and be an insurance adjuster “. That’s not to say some haven’t and no disrespect to our adjusters.
Do you have any information on discounted subscriptions to XM8? I called them and learned that the cost is $258 per month or $2500 per year.
No. Unfortunately they don't have discount codes.
You just blew my mind. lol
Hahaha! Glad to teach you something new!
Please send me the pdf file you speak off @ 9:08 for the commonly missed items !!!
Unfortunately, UA-cam doesn't allow me to send files in the comments. Email me at alena@xm8mastery.com and I'll send you the file. And please state that you're wanting the Commonly Missed Line Items pdf. 😊
@@EstimateMastery I just sent you the email thanks! :)
Most programs make templates READ only, would make life much easier ..
VERY confusing for a beginner trying to learn about macros.
Sorry about that. Have you watched our X-1 walk through? That takes you through everything!
@@EstimateMastery Working on it! :)
Thank you...
You're very welcome!
