  • This time Mike carves a coffee scoop using only knives out of freshly cut pear wood. He usually uses power carving tools but he feels the need to hone his skills with knife carving. Come along and watch him do his best not to cut himself. Haha!

I wish I could have told you ahead of time how hard pear wood is, but I think you already knew that. I look so forward to your videos, Mike. My favorite UA-cam guy! Love that coffee spoon. They ate hard to find anymore. Another of the lost arts. I love the lodge at Mt. Hood, as well as the very few old forest service cabins that remain. When I was a kid I went to many of them. All of them had hand made furniture and carvings and such. They worked harder than any of us do today. They didn't go to the store for food. It was canned in jars and tasted way better. Just like your videos!! Canned pears!!

@@joeehrlich2898 Well, I found out how hard it is, but I really like how smooth it finishes. Yes, the old timers really worked hard for a living!

Mike, Thanks for another great video, but it's a little ironic that you should post this one today. I spent the rare sunny afternoon going in the opposite direction, working on getting more familiar with the rotary shaft since these old hands don't have the grip strength to whittle for hours like I used to. I do like the peace and quiet of knife work--listening to the creek and the birds. Your videos have shown me so much of what the bits can do that I'm thinking I need to get some practice with that since I have a lot of interesting wood waiting in the shed that I want to get to. Thanks for sharing your knowledge! Thanks also for mentioning Treeline. They had the pelican blades that I had been looking for for a long time. Pats to Pearl!

Amazing! I exclusively whittle with knives, on the exception I have to use a gouge for certain things. You inspired me to get a micro carving tool so I could add more detail to my carvings. Hope to see more of your creations 👍
I find that wooden clothes pegs make really good little alligators 😁

Thank you, Jimmy! I think I got the micro carving knives from Harbor Freight store. They work great for the fine details!

Thanks, Jimmy! I started carving the birch, and yes, it carves really nice, and takes details well. I'm going to try alder after this one.

Nice one Mike, very inspirational for those maybe considering, but on the fence. Used to love just sitting and carving/whittling when I was a youngster with just my pocket knife, really do need to get myself a few carving knives and start back. Nice little "hack" with the mini diamond files, they are so fantastic for that sort of thing, really help save on sanding, one of the best purchases I made a few years back for wood or metal.

Thank you very much! I really enjoyed this little project, and hope that it will inspire others to give it a try. Yes, I like those files! I use mine all the time. They are really handy!
