      In my humble opinion, I believe that true craftsman are a dying breed. Not saying that people who use power tools aren't craftsman, just saying that doing it by hand brings a certain essence and quality that tools just doesn't. Pride of ownership and craft are on the way out in our country. Sad but true...but I'm gonna keep on being old school as long as I can. Thanks for the video. You reminded me of why I do things how I do them. Much appreciated

    but i have a question . is the inside of the file carbon steel. because i think they only add loose carbon on the outside of the file and harden that. or am i wrong and is it all carbon steel. i mean does it hold it sharpness for a long time?

    • @imadethischannel

    But how long does it take to achieve cutting edge with a 1200grit wetsone? HOURS?

    • @imadethischannel
      @imadethischannel  6 місяців тому +1

      It depends on the thickness of the blade before you start and the angle of the bevel :) it was a 1000 grit water stone and I didn’t take hours. But yes, the whole project is not geared towards time efficiency…

    • @goonstuck
      @goonstuck 6 місяців тому

      @@imadethischannel yeah ofcourse... i asked this spesific project, i saw you left a good chunk of steel on the edge(1,5 to 2mm thick maybe?) when hardening... i mean i know its necessary to leave some to prevent conflicts on hardening state but still its a nightmare me to grind hard steel 😂😂

    • @imadethischannel
      @imadethischannel  6 місяців тому

      @goonstuck haha, yes :) I don‘t remember exactly but it was definitely less than a mm. But it is a tradeoff. I tend to err on the patience side because I have had to redo stuff many times where I tried to cut corners…

    I need to mention that thinning on your Atoma flattening stone will make it wear out quick. I used to use my atoma for lots thinning for about 6 months and now its slower than an 800 grit diamond stone. Only use it for flattening, that's what it's made to do. For lots of grinding and thinning I tend to use either sandpaper (I usually wet my atoma and stick the sand paper on top, it's perfectly flat and has a great grip) or I use the "Sharpening Supplies" Grinder stone. It's an 80 grit water stone and works FAST. You will need some loose silicon carbide grit however, such as 60/90 tumbling grit. Other than that there is "THE BEAST" (this is it's real name) 50 grit diamond stone that's pretty cheap.
    Also to make annealing easier (and softer) its nice to have a little pot full of burnt ash. When work is hot, stick it deep into the ash. It cools down very slowly and it's very soft afterwards, this is what most blacksmiths do.
