  • Taking a look at the Standard Manufacturing SAA, 7-1/2" bbl, 45 Colt. This is truly a work of art. In this video I give an overview of what makes this gun unique, and compare it to the much more affordable Uberti version. Is it worth the exorbitant price when you can get nearly 4 of the Uberti's for the same money? I can't answer that for you. For me, yes.

    There is absolutely no substitute for craftsmanship. If Standard starts making Schofields I have no idea what lengths I might go to so that I might acquire a brace. I congratulate you on your fine acquisition. The older I get the more satisfaction I receive from the joy of others.

      It's strange because the vast majority of their guns are hot garbage. This and their 1911 are their best offerings by a country mile.

    Absolutely beautiful classic revolver,the blue and case-hardening are super quality and the grips complete the package,lovely to see that quality is still appreciated.

    Great review, finally bought one about a month ago. Dealer had a 4 3/4" in stock on the shelf, had been reading all the reviews and decided to purchase it. Excellent fit and finish, great trigger pull and even the grips fit perfect. Some people gripe about the grips being a little proud but my Colts are the same way. Would of liked the one piece grips but this was what was available. Excellent true color case finish and extremely nice blued and fired blued parts. The blued parts are as good as my 1982 Python. The extra step in timing the screws is a true sign of quality workmanship. I have 1st and 2nd generation Colt's and the quality is every bit as good. Like mentioned before if Standard starts producing the Schofield I will be one of the first in line to get one. Keep it polished with Renaissance polish and it should last for many generations.
    Enjoy Yours.

      I know exactly what you mean. I’m choosing to go with the M1A instead of an AR. The laws are ridiculous. I love California, been here my whole life. But too many people here are lazy, and have a chip on their shoulder. At some point people stop being themselves and try to be fake nice people. Everything is about appearance in the city. Except San Bernardino, and Pomona. Poor cities like ours rarely see protests or SJW’s of any kind. I’m surprised if any of them vote.I don’t. I don’t think any election really mattered since that limo ride in Dallas.

    I can't believe it took six months for UA-cam to include your review in their recommended videos for me! Regardless, very nice review and with good close-up details as well! Glad I got to veiw it. I've seen only a few pics of their 7.5 inchers, so I enjoyed your closeup videos of that beauty. Also, it was gratifying to have my videos referenced in your review. I've gotten a little uptick in comments on my Standard videos lately, and I'd wondered why; now I know.
    Thanks for uploading your video. I don't want to see Standard fold like USFA eventually did. So I very much appreciate videos like yours explaining the little quality touches that make Standard worth what they charge. Glad yours shot well also.
    All the best,
    Eric

      Wow! Thank you for your comment. It was your videos that turned me onto the Standard Manufacturing in the first place. I can't touch the level of quality and thoroughness of your reviews, but I wanted to put something out there so that people can see that there are excellent options for the single action revolver out there still, especially since Colts are hard to come by, and in some ways inferior to the Standard. I'm not knocking other clones, as I own several Uberti and Pietta guns as well, but to me, the Standard stands a head above the crowd in the single action army reproduction market. Value for your money is determined by the person spending it. It was worth every penny to me.
      I really appreciate your comments, and thank you for your reviews that pointed me in the direction of this beautiful firearm in the first place.

    • @atlanticproducts

      @@RooftopKY I don't know what to say. When I made my Standard reviews, there were a lot of questions on the forums that no one seemed to be able to answer. I took the plunge, ordered one, and broke it down. Until I saw your video, I'd been lamenting the dearth of quality reviews of the Standard and was concerned that their venture may die on the vine. Every so often, I'd do a UA-cam search for Standard; but other than the rare and very short "trips to the range" videos, there were no closeups or reviews that approached anything like I'd uploaded--until yours. And I'm very grateful to you for doing so, because for one, I just cannot afford another right now. Although I maintain that they're worth every penny, my own purchase was financed with the sale of a multitude of lesser firearms, and I just don't have anything left that I'd be willing to liquidate. So any hope of a follow-up video comparing the latest Standard to my early example would have been in vain. Your video gives a good update on what to expect today, and I hope that folks who view my video and then yours will note how Standard has addressed what minor criticisms I had and even managed to offer a little more in value. For example, one piece grips weren't available back when I ordered serial number 54. And my case colors--while lovely--don't measure up to your example. Many of the comments on my videos were from folks who just couldn't justify spending that much money on a single action when Uberti already made something that (they opined) was just as good for much, much less money. I'm really stoked that my videos were what inspired you to get your own version and that yours was such a nice example. Thanks so much for uploading it! And may I say, that's a really nice firing pin you have there. It is perfectly conical and proves my prediction that Standard would eventually manage to get their conical firing pins to hit the hole properly from the get-go rather than peening them into proper alignment. Warmest regards, Eric (erobertsonhull@yahoo.com).

      I too had to sell several other lesser guns to afford this one. Normally when I spend this much on a firearm, I'll get some sort of buyers remorse. Not want to shoot it because it might decrease the value, etc. Not this time. Of my old west revolvers, I shoot the standard, my Uberti 7th Cav and my Uberti Schofield the most. Almost exclusively full power black powder loads. Just something about doing things old school brings a smile to my face. If it's a farm work day, I'll leave the standard at home and carry one of the Piettas that I won't care as much if it gets banged up. I'd love to be able to afford another standard in a 5.5", but with things being as they are, I don't see that happening any time soon. I hope they continue to make these fine guns so that if I am ever in a place to get one, I'll be able to find it. Based on their Instagram page, they appear to still be cranking them out, so that's good.
      I do have one question for you and I can email it to you since it's not really related to this topic, but one of my other revolvers that's giving me fits.

      @erj135az No, Matthew and I are not related, but he did make a very nice review video, didn't he? Excellent closeups! I was especially happy to see his review, because his is a much later production version, and it highlighted how well Standard had maintained their high quality and even improved upon it (firing pin) since my very early version review.

    Nice revolver. I still have my Dads old Armi Jager Dakota in 45 Colt which sold for more than an actual Colt in 1966 which was the year of manufacture.These Standard Manufacturing Colt clones reminds me much of the Armi Jagers, beautiful case color gardening and excellent for and finish all around and I actually like it better than my actual Colts. I think I will purchase one of these just to see how close the quality is. Great video.

    Beautiful color case hardening and beautiful grips.
    I wonder if the gun and all internal parts were made here in the US, or if some came from Italy. I understand that the Italian copies use metric screws, which could make it difficult to modify American guns with Italian parts. With the screw thread issue covered, I would first like to say that if I had one of those fine guns, it would go in my collection and not come out to be scratched. The Italian gun is different though. I like a longer grip to hold on to, so the simple way to do that without using different looking grips is to get the trigger guard, backstrap and grips made for the 1860 Army. They should be available from Dixie Gun Works, as well as several places. They would be one piece grips, so the appearance would not change much. If there are any rough spots, that would give you the opportunity to smooth the thing up.

    Great gun, but I would rip LOUIS a new one on those "fancy wood one peice grips" that he up charges for and made you wait for. To different woods and no matching or opposing bookend end grain on the bottom. Amature at best on a otherwise stunning 1873. For the price they charge I would expect that from a real Colt SAA which is cheaper and much more desirable to hold collector valve. Good luck with you new pistol.

      @@RooftopKY Good to hear. It was the non response from the company that ticked me off the most. I can live with a lemon once in awhile, but when a company doesn't take action to address a problem I'm done with them.

      That sucks. Customer service is paramount especially when there are other/less expensive options out there. I haven't had to call Standard for anything, but especially for what these cost, they should be responsive. I have had to call Cimarron for a few things over the years, and they have bent over backwards to help when I needed something.

    I live in Australia and sadly we have diabolically draconian gun laws so for the moment I'm not able to get a Colt Single Action Army and when I say I want the Colt I mean the Colt no disrespect to Uberti or Standard Manufacturing but a SAA directly from Colt is from what I've seen a better engineered firearm sadly getting a SAA made by Colt is an absolute nightmare.

      There are people that want to replicate aussie gun laws here in America. I'll fight that with all I have.
      As far as the Colt. When I bought the Standard, there was a Colt in the case right beside it. Between those two guns, the standard was better. That being said, the Colt was still exceptional, and I will eventually own the real deal.

    I own a Colt. The Colt's firing pin does not float. Pin is press fit to the face of the hammer. There's no transfer bar. You put 5 rounds in it, and leave an empty chamber under the hammer, or you're being unsafe. The Colt ran me $2K OTD. No waiting, because by some miracle, one appeared in the case at the LGS. I like the case colors on yours a little better than what I got from Colt, but overall, a very high quality gun.

    • @RooftopKY
      @RooftopKY  4 роки тому +1

      I perhaps used incorrect terminology... I never said it had a transfer bar. The firing pin is fixed to the hammer, but held in with a retaining pin that gives it the slightest bit of wiggle. Perhaps float was the wrong word.

    • @reubenpickering7777

      @@RooftopKY Upon examining my revolver, you're right. There is some play in the firing pin. I never noticed before. How did I not spot that? So not a press fit as I thought. When I hear "floating firing pin", I tend to think a setup like Ruger uses, with the pin sitting in a hole in the frame.

    • @RooftopKY
      @RooftopKY  4 роки тому +1

      I'm not sure when Colt changed to the scalloped firing pin, but this design has been standard for them for a looong time. The cone shaped pin that Standard Manufacturing uses is the original style, and my understanding is that it was changed to the scalloped one relatively early on for reliability and ease of manufacturing.

      @RooftopKY  4 роки тому +1

      Depends on what you want. Personally, I'm lucky in that I'm local to Buds. They had 4 Standards and 3 Colts in the case. I looked at both. Both are very nice, the Colts were more expensive by almost $400, and this one had a nicer fit and finish then all of them. I love the single action army design. It doesn't have to say Colt for me to like it. That being said, someday, I'll get one.

    • @tberkoff
      @tberkoff 4 роки тому +1

      Go for the Standard. The fit and finish is far beyond what Colt is able to do right now. These Standard guns will be comparable in value to the USFA revolvers from 15 years ago that are worth $3-5K now.

      The gun was in the showcase at Buds when I bought it. The salesman brought out the box, placed the gun back in the bag, and then back into the bubble wrap. Put the gun in the box with the paperwork. I came home and shot this video. There was no lock in the box from Buds, not sure if standard shipped it with one or not. However, this isn't the first firearm I've purchased that didn't come with one. A number of my Cimarron guns didn't come with locks either.

    • @RooftopKY
      @RooftopKY  4 роки тому

      Maybe, maybe not. They make other things besides the SAA that are quite popular in their own right. As long as they don't attempt to make a Zip 22, hopefully they'll be around a while. There were other reasons USFA went under. Their eccentric owner, selling guns for less than it cost to make them. The Zip 22 fiasco. I've even heard that the owner was just done and walked away. I don't get that sense from Standard. I could be wrong.

    • @Desperado3248
      @Desperado3248 4 роки тому

      There were several reasons US Firearms went under. Too many products announced that never saw the light of day, The main reason was they had Colt by the short hairs by offering a product of equal or superior quality for hundreds less. When Colt increased production and dropped prices slightly, and UA Firearms increased theirs it was all over. The Standard Manufacturing models are overpriced and if Colt can get their act together, get Single Actions our the door for around $ 1700-1800 with the rampant Colt on the side plate, there will be no market for Standard Manufacturing version that is more expensive.

    • @RooftopKY
      @RooftopKY  4 роки тому

      You might be right. But when I purchased this one. A comparable colt in the same case was $300 more than the Standard. If Colt drops the OTD price I'd be tickled. I'd probably get one.

      @@RooftopKY it wouldn't fire. contacted customer service department (more then a few times) all I got from their customer service was a mesage saying they test fire every gun. Eventually I had to send it to a gunsmith (at my expense. Something about the cylinder notches weren't cut correctlty so when you cocked the hammer the chamber wouldn't quite line up so the primer could be struck with the hammer. Cylinder (it wasn't just a simple timing issue) was replaced and now it works fine. These revolvers have great fit and finish. I judge a company by when you have a problem (kind of like how you find out how good your insurance company is when you file a claim). The less then enthusiastic response by their customer service means I can't recommend this company or its products. I try to avoid any of their videos (this one I stumbled on) because I have nothing to say but negativity. I do applaud them for trying to make a quality single action revolver. My negative experience is really to bad for me as I like the look of their product offerings, but I cannot purchase from them knowing they won't back up the quality of their products. I do recommend Joe Perkins "Classic Single Actions" Tucson, AZ who does nothing but eat and sleep Colt SAA style revolvers his "action" are the smoothest I've ever seen. He is a one man shop so it takes a little while, but when you get your gun back it is perfect.
