I took an art class last semester, and a lot of people in the class were clearly beginners. Watching their growth was amazing. I don't understand how people can look at someone's attempt at creating and feel anything but excited to see them grow and improve.
I also took 3 art classes last semester and honestly, you couldn't have said it better. 2 of the 3 classes were intro-level and anyone could take them, so seeing non-art majors evolve and change was probably my favorite part of each class. Some of the newbies had previously decided to become art majors without any experience because they wanted to learn how to create, and man, their progress was SO heartwarming. A few classmates in particular grew so exponentially, I could just tell they'd be going places someday. Part of my art journey was ironically realizing I didn't want to make art my job. Ever since I changed my major, I've actually been drawing and changing MORE than I had in the last several years alone; and I've been doing this for well over a decade! Point is, everyone has their own journey, their own learning pace, and their own choices. I think that's beautiful. It's sad that social media is forcibly eradicating free thinking (not to sound like Ben Shapiro lmfao). Imagine how much good TikTok could do if they just thought critically for a few seconds and cheered people on.
I took an art class last semester too There were people who were insanely good and people who didn’t know what they were doing but literally everyone improved through the class
Fr it's insane! It's why I'm so afraid to put my content out there because I'm not the greatest in terms of technical skill and I don't want to be harassed and made fun of for being considered one of those "art lore" posts.
Funnily enough, the kids that make "art lore" videos have a long way to become highly skilled artists themselves.. All artists continue to learn and become better over time, there's no 'limit' to how good your art can improve
@malhadadoepigonothey aren’t that good either but they think cause they have followers, some views and likes that they are better than anyone else or validates their opinions about other peoples work.
I remember being on deviant art in the late 00s, and it was so common seeing empty accounts roasting young artists in the fan art community. Especially on fan artists original work. A lot of the problem was people were expecting character hyper realism in what was clearly a study on background perspective. It really only affected fan artists who tried drawing people. Would have loved to have seen more arguments about the anatomy of Bowser or Pokémon on there, but alas, they were just as creative in their arguments as they were in what they posted in the accounts they bullied from.
Something I always hated since I'm in the art community in 2006, is unsolicited "criticism". It did more harm to my process than helped me and held me back for YEARS because the bullying sucked out my confidence in drawing and learning. I quit the art community for the past 4-5 years to concentrate on myself and started from scratch with my art. I'm 35 now and since I'm posting very rarely my art, but still draw a lot (just stoped posting it), I had a HUUUUGE upgrade in. my art, which gave me enough confidence to not give a fuck anymore. It was the best decision, if I hadn't quit, I would have quit art for good.
I still remember joining a (at the time) new art platform when i was in middle school and almost immediately had people accusing me of things like "style theft," "pose theft," and tracing simply for using reference photos and experimenting with my style. I haven't quit posting on social media, but for me, its become a thing I do when it crosses my mind, then I just step away. I don't worry about trends, peak posting hours, etc. I'll just post a pencil sketch at 2am with minimal tags and no caption and disappear for weeks. The more I've distanced myself from what social media wants, the more connected ive felt to my work.
I remember being like 12 and getting really excited about my art, and possibly getting up the confidence to enter the art community online, but after exploring around was quickly put off and scared away by what I saw. And my years of lurking around as a voyeur in these spaces has only served to prove I made the right decision. I'm honestly convinced the entire online art ""community"" is useless, and as you said OP, only stifles any progress to be made. Not at all the modern Bohemian, beatpoet art colony I envisioned lol
This is why I stick to the UA-cam Art Community. Especially on shorts, I very rarely see people crapping on or roasting beginner artists. Of course there’s outliers, but most of the time it’s just so dang supportive. It always makes me feel good when I come across a short by a beginner artist with maybe 15 likes and 5 comments, all those comments being so positive
Same! Even beyond UA-cam shorts, I personally have made animatics that only had a small amount of views, but I don’t think I’ve ever gotten a negative comment, even though I know they’re not that good lol. Even when I’ve found art I didn’t personally like on shorts, comments were still largely positive!
It's so ironic how Art UA-cam is the ONLY saving grace for UA-cam Shorts. Most of Art UA-cam can be pretty toxic as well; I remember years ago there was a huge artist in the community who, one day, randomly made an entire video saying "art block isn't real" and "you're just being lazy" and they lost a ton of viewership and respect after that. As an artist with MDD and some undiagnosed attention disorder (we're figuring that out, medical world moves slow haha), I remember being hurt by their remarks. Not even offended, just plain hurt. I supported them for a while even though I didn't particularly like their art style, because I had faith in their advice. Then they turned around and said "but you're lazy and you should just draw, you lazy bum". Safe to say they had to make an apology after that. Not that it matters; I'm not ever going to follow an artist who has no empathy or awareness. As for UA-cam Shorts, they don't allow enough time for crappy people to "deep dive" into why all artists are secretly lazy or some bs like that. Most people will upload a few tips or a speedpaint, and there you go. It's great.
The only time i’ve seen people shitting on beginner artists on UA-cam shorts is when said beginner artists are pretending to know everything and think they’re the best artist on the platform, and the comments are just dragging them back down to earth. I am scared of TikTok though
U'd think the art community would have stopped bullying children after the "rating/reviewing" OCs/Fanfiction/Fanart/Etc tumblr blogs stopped being popular Ten Years Ago bc everyone realised bullying children is cringe
@@NassifehI think it's more so because kids think cringe culture is cool - cringe culture quite literally promotes bullying and policing yourself and others. And there are adults or older kids bullying younger kids and this not only makes kids feel less safe and comfortable just simply being kids, but it also puts into kids minds that it's cool to bully. So long as it's not called bullying, bullying is okay ig :/
the problem is teenagers can get pretty vicious. and as teens grow into adults who realize that bullying others over their art skill is shitty, younger children grow into teens who think that being mean is funny
I think another reason why people bully other artists is because they're jealous of the attention. I remember when i used to use DeviantArt i saw art that i saw as less good get wayy more views and used to be super jealous, but now looking back i realize we were at the exact same skill level, i just wasnt on the platform as long. Luckily i never resorted to bullying.
I know exactly this feeling. I had an IRL friend on deviantart when I was 12 and I used to obsessively watch her pages views and seethe in the way immature middle school kids do. She was also on the platform longer than I was. It really was that simple. I think sometimes if art was generally a less competitive hobby maybe we wouldn't have this behavior become so rampant. I'm a firm believer some of these kids never grow up and just become immature seething adults...
At least with AI you can laugh at bad "drawn" hands because they were made by a computer. A badly drawn hands done by an artist means they are still learning (and let's be honest, hands can be hard to draw).
While ai can be used for inspiration and helping artist learn to be creative Art lore only destroy artists self esteem and make beginner artist fear sharing their works
13:50 Aside from people forgetting that they can just scroll I don't think we talk enough about curating your own experience on social media by just... Blocking people you find annoying and moving on instead of making entire videos just to punch others down. It's just so baffling to me as a tumblr user lol
I don't have Tumblr, but I still do this on like, every social I have, even Pinterest. "I don't want to see content about this, so I'm removing it from my feed. bye!" it's sad that such common sense isn't so common anymore.
The bullying on Tumblr really was vicious some years ago, though. Like you could delete and start over from scratch but people would keep coming after you like some sort of witch hunt. I didn't become active on it until post 2019 when most of the disturbed users migrated to Twitter. I still have my ask closed permanently and have never interacted more than a Hi/Bye with mutuals. I wasn't even ever involved in any of the controversies yet I have war flashbacks of that sht. Lmao.
@@abbyelectric I posted two of my drawings on Pinterest, and, for some reason, the app keeps turning off the comments section. I’m not sure if it’s for the best, because I do want people to appreciate the effort I took, but, at the same time, I don’t want to be bullied for the anatomy being wrong.
people when ai "art" started: nooo its gonna destroy our jobs and artists, and demotivate people the art community on tiktok: AI? pffff- , who needs that? we're gonna drive away new artists and people that are not as good, ourselves. How dare they even post art? pffff-
Why does this even need to be addressed.... Like... I thought it was common sense that people might not see art the same way like others why do they take it so seriously, just scroll and move on like come on that's not cool at all 😭
@@ktzn666me too!! Except it ain’t banned for me, I just never got into it and just deleted it. Judging on how my sisters are with it, I’m glad I never got into it cause they are on it 24/7…even while we play games or the second they get bored, I hear them scrolling on TikTok and it doesn’t take that long for them just to pull up TikTok
I feel like it's also a case of people thinking that they can't dislike something without a "correct" reason. You can dislike a style and you can complain about seeing it to your friends. You don't need to proclaim how morally reprehensible the style or artist is if they're really not. Art is subjective and your reason to not like something can be "I just don't like how it looks". This may tie into the fact that publically complaining , whether intended to become public or not, instantly gets backlash as well if there's "no reason" to dislike something. Thus, it feels like a requirement to prepare some hard justification to earn the right to complain, which is then interpreted as a call to arms. In short, people need to accept others can enjoy or not enjoy harmless things for harmless reasons without dragging a hundred strangers into it.
I don't even care whether posting art stuff on TikTok will helped get me noticed by employers or whatever, I am *never* joining that septic tank of an app if this is what happens to artists on there.
I think people really need to understand that there is a time and a place for criticism. At uni, I agreed to read and give feedback on a creative writing dissertation. I spent a lot of time and effort doing it, and from the moment I gave it back, she stopped using my name, and started calling me ‘pernickety’ instead, in a mostly joking manner, but I have to admit, there were a LOT of corrections and suggestions for improvement. The important thing here was that she had ASKED for my opinion, and along with the criticisms I made sure to let her know the things that worked well, because it was a brilliant piece of work, and I didn’t want her to feel discouraged. I must have done an okay job, because despite my new nickname, she asked me to look over her final draft too. I hope my suggestions helped her. There is a huge difference between the criticism I provided in the example above, and offering unsolicited discouraging feedback to total strangers. When a stranger posts their writing online, and I think there is room for improvement, I scroll past it saying nothing. Only if someone has specifically asked for critique is it appropriate to provide it. If someone isn’t prepared or interested in your feedback, you will only do harm, even if the intention is good.
Whenever I give feedback on something i see online, I give advice as to what i think would make it look better, as opposed to what i think looks bad Most people appreciate it, and for the ones that don’t, I just delete my comment and move on
This. As an artist who has just recently graduated with a BA in art studio, I can comment on how critiques are in Uni. If any of these people that bully other artists want to go to uni for art, they’re in for a rude awakening that bullying is not allowed in professional settings and is highly unprofessional. It’s one thing to not like an art work, but if your critique is not really about the work itself but an attack on the artist, that’s not going to fly. The professors would rather you explain why something does or doesn’t work in a piece and how that person could improve.
I agree. Another reason why I don’t like this internet culture of giving unsolicited advice is that the trolls giving them act like they have a right to do so because “you posted it on a public platform therefore I can comment on it however I want” or give a holier-than-thou attitude.
Sometimes I’ll post art on Discord and my best friend, who I really do love dearly, very often tries to critique my shading and stuff, and I don’t reply, but it really sucks seeing that. I didn’t ask. It turns this thing I was proud of and happy to share into its flaws. That wasn’t their intention obviously, but unsolicited advice kinda sorta sucks.
Which is so weird, because when you ASK for advice all people can say is “NOTHING! IT’S PERFECT!!” It’s so backwards. I’m glad that person seems to have gotten useful advice out of your notes!
every month or two a Tik Tok community has to walk up to a chalkboard and repeatedly write down an obvious lesson they should have known (like: don't bully, don't be weird, etc.) that platform is cursed
I really do not understand how you can actively hate on beginner artists in their video's comment sections. Any beginner artist sharing their art is so brave for doing so. And they should not be randomly insulted or laughed at for not being born a professional artist. Everyone was at a point where their art just wasn't developed as much. So every artist should be able to relate to beginner artists. Motivate them, tell them they are doing a great job. You don't need to lie and say "that anatomy is perfect", but just say something nice if you really want to comment. Their art may not be a master piece in your eyes, but everyone starts somewhere.
I dislike a lot of my old art but I always look at it in terms of how far I’ve come. Everyone has rough patches but if you antagonize people about that it dosent help anybody.
As someone who's majoring in game art and wants to retry art/drawing, thank you so much for these affirmations to never use tiktok or twitter EVER. I guess Instagram isn't so bad after all 🤷🏾♀️ This whole "😡 Grrr how dare your beginner 🤢 art not look good!! 🤬" attitude is soo anxiety-inducing for me and many others and reminds me of the "you either do it right or don't do it at all" mentality, especially since i'm thinking about making my own vtuber model once my skills get high enough. Do these people even realize how hypocritical they are, or are their heads too far up their asses to care? Probably the latter 💀
Hey! Did not expect to see my own face here 😭 but I completely agree. I feel as though this situation has gotten worse as of a few months ago and it’s really discouraging to see so much hate on TikTok now. I would say now the biggest issue with the TikTok art community is this new “artstyle trend” where we are now grouping peoples works into styles. It completely strips away any individuality from the artist but if anyone decides to hate on that art-style (like jelly or cream soda style) everyone under that category instantly gets ridiculed and ran off the website. It honestly makes me not want to post at all. But thanks for using your platform and bringing this to light!
I love looking at my old art. It's a sense of both nostalgia and pride in seeing how far I've come. The fact other people can't feel the same, all because TikTok users think so highly of their opinion in this toxic way? It's upsetting :(
People need to leave children/beginners the fuck alone. I've seen things like this in all kinds of communities, but it's especially sad to see in the art community. Art is literally the most subjective and beautiful thing human beings have, how have we stooped so low
Man, imagine if Pablo Picasso was on tiktok. We would have missed the entire cubism movement because he would have been bullied into not making anymore art.
it's videos like this that make me so grateful that, in my beginner artist phase, i posted my art on a supportive discord server with really kind people and not tiktok
i also wanna mention how god awful instagram reels comments sections are for beginner artists. it's so disheartening, especially since its so easy to have a reel blow up on that app.
It is incredibly sad how this stuff is continuing to progress further and further, I miss the times when artists got along and were able to create wonderful things completely and blissfully unbothered. Its also really sad when it comes to specific fandoms, especially if you are genuinely a good person who just happened to like drawing a specific thing (example being Genshin Impact), but the rest of a fandom ruins it for you, or ruin's their fandom's reputation so much, that you are lumped in with them by default
I learned pretty quickly to help others improve rather than criticize. When I took my college course for drawing, a lot of people there were beginners and seeing them improve and grow throughout the semester was incredible. They were always willing to accept feedback from those who have been drawing for far longer. It's baffling seeing this kinda shit happen when I'm so used to seeing such a positive community. At least where I lived and went to school.
I'm not really on art tiktok but from what ive seen of it people are soooo quick to attack things that are either 'cringe' OR something overly mainstream. i think the way we heavily curate social media with our best content first has definitely given people ridiculously high standards, unlike how it was in the 2000s where you could post your shitty mspaint oc on deviantart in relative peace lmao
I’ve started sharing basically everything I draw in the art channels in Discord servers I’m in, even the shitty half-assed doodles and failed sketches. My mentality is that the fun of creating and sharing is much more valuable than the likes and praise I could get from doing so. That said, it does feel nice to have someone say something positive. I’d much rather have no reaction than a bad one, though.
When I was younger, my brother would just tell me everything that is wrong with my art when I wanted to show my parents. I then stopped showing people my art unless it was at school and became super self conscious of my work. It wasn't until recently where people online were telling me they enjoy my style that I started becoming a bit more confident in my work. People just being unnecessarily rude towards usually children will just make these people not want to do art.
The disproportionate and 'ugly' style of that one person actually isn't that bad and it breaks my heart that people were so horrible to them. ESPECIALLY because the guy who did Rugrats, As Told By Ginger and a lot of other shows, had a very similar style and those were very big, very beloved franchises that were loved BECAUSE they were unique and expressive. I hope that person is happy with their current art style, but they should in no way be embarrassed by their old one. It wasn't ugly, it was just different and I wonder how it would have evolved if they were just left alone
Their """art style""" looks nothing like those shows. Let's not get delusional and say the flaws in their art are just their art style. Its wrong for them to be bullied but that doesn't mean we have to lie. It's obvious that they are a beginner still learning the fundamentals and that's fine.
@@commentbot9510 Not exactly like it, no. But the unusual style of it, the way things are exaggerated, moved around or stretched out IS similar (especially to As Told By Ginger). Something doesn't have to be a carbon copy to make you go 'hmm, that reminds of this other thing'. Which it did (and why would I bother to lie about that???). I believe it wasn't all inexperience with anatomy that made it look that way, I think there was some stylistic choice too. When I was a kid, I tried out all kinds of styles before bothering to learn the fundamentals, because I was self taught and that was boring. But just because I didn't know what I was doing doesn't mean I had no style, or that I didn't draw with intention
I remember when like almost half of the class made fun of me because i was testing artstyles they were say it's weird and ugly but i had good comments but those people who made fun of me couldn't even draw . I was just confused
this is why im barely active in the art community, i do post but i dont really interact with others and when i do its mostly smaller artists. the art community has always been toxic and probably always will be but i hope people can find their own group witin the community
As a young and beginner artist ive honestly just given up and showing people my art. I always am afraid people will judge and criticize me. I also think my art looks bad because it dosent stand to the art stereotype. Its the same with doing Gacha, everyone bullies people who post stuff like that especially beginners. Like, its sad. Very very sad. I still do draw just not as much as i used too.
this video helped me SO MUCH i have a cartoon type style, but then with more realistic shading. i like drawing this way its fun to draw and to look at. but people kept on telling me that i needed to learn anatomy because my art is too simple, then they did similar things that i see done in this video with the "artlore" thank you so so much for bringing this to light, because i've not finished a drawing in 3 years, desperately trying to "fix" my art to their liking and not to mine, it was not fun. but thanks to you i have the courage to have fun in art again thank you :)
i'm actually so glad that i didn't post my art on tiktok.. i feel bad for the other beginner artists (like me) who have been bullied off of the platform. i might never have a tiktok account because of what's happening in the art community
Kind of reminds me of being in 4th grade and jealous my classmate could draw better than I could. Like I took it as a personal attack but I was also like 9 years old... I hope these are just kids being asses to each other and not whole grown adults displaying this type of behavior. But on TikTok, you never can tell...
I remember some bullying going on online back in the early days of the art Internet community, but honestly most of it was irl, like if your art got around to your high school, not inside the actual communities of artists, you know? Like I don't remember kids getting bullied on DVA for drawing neon sparkle dogs, using bases, etc.. I'm sure it did happen (and I certainly do remember some silly gatekeeping/judging going on) but overall the sites or groups in them were safe places for kids/teens to express themselves. And yeah, honestly the use of ' cringe ' has become just another way to bully... it's a word you use for something you look down on, or that makes you uncomfortable, but you otherwise have no reason to hate, and causes no harm to anybody. I feel for any of the weird kids growing up with this kind of environment... It seems like there aren't a lot of art spaces online that haven't changed for the worst (or imploded/died) in that regard.
I came across an artist and she was like around 11-13 and she was just showing her art (she was a beginner) she got so much hate and "new art lore dropped" I felt so bad for her
I used to love drawing, and i can say i think i was pretty good. But at the time i was unsatisfied after seeing my level compared to other artists and lost all confidence and destroyed all the work i did. And now years later i'm so out of practice i can't even hold a candle to my old works. Even without being mocked online it's so easy to get frustrated and depressed. Even if i don't like the art i can't imagine putting another artist through what i did to myself
I think this is a reason why I NEVER post my art on tiktok because the art community is so toxic it doesn't even feel safe for beginner artists. How do you expect one to improve if you bully a beginner because they still haven't grasp the proper skills??? It's messed up!!
For me at least, Tumblr feels pretty safe. I’ve been posting art there and I’ve seen positive reception :D I’ll be sure to avoid TikTok though, I’m a beginner and I feel scared at times to post my own art at times.

0:06 bro people are bullying others for being confident?? I’ve been confident in my skills for so long but getting bullied for it?? Seriously?? Being confident is how I make my art faster bro 😭
I remember when I was in the animation meme comunity/animatics and wanted to make silly animations so bad and post them online but I was too scared to be called cringe so I just did them and never posted them. That's why I always encourage kids online when they post their art, no one should be ashamed of drawing for fun.
I literally stopped art for the longest time because of all the criticism for artists online. I've recently started drawing again (thank you Mohammed for the inspiration) and I'm slowly regaining my skill and learning more. Seeing just how horrible the tiktok art community is through a lense like this does help me feel more confident in my art
I've never been more convinced that TikTok is just rehashing everything that other platforms already hashed out, learned from for the most part (there will always be assholes on every platform), and moved on from the most part. This reminds of early deviantart drama but worse.
Seeing stuff like this makes me even more glad that I don't bother with TikTok at all. It's too easy for people to be a-holes online and get away with it. Love your points, btw! You always provide the human perspective. Your channel is comforting.
TikTok''s art community by far is the most toxic one I have seen. Specially to beginner artists who are TRYING to improve but instead get called names, slurs, bullied, or even accused of being something awful just because their art style "Looks" like something Use the "Proshipper" art style issue as an example for that So many young artists ended up quitting due to how toxic the art community on that site is.
you really never know how a style will develop and the more I've seen the original of the "rendering process" one, the more it looks fine, you literally just have to get use to it. Imagine if these people tried to apply "art lore" to Matt Groenings shows or heck, Adventure Time?? they'd lose their minds..
i normally use my art as a way to vent since i have trouble expressing my feelings and i used to hate my art and i still kinda do now but back then i found it hard to draw how i really felt. But because i was given encouragement i was able to improve my art and able to better draw my feelings. And I'm so glad I've never had to deal with these sort of people. I honestly would've probably quit art because of it, i honestly feel so bad for all those who have to with this. Its ridiculous.
Your channel has brought me a lot of comfort, you put emphases on art being unique and your own, what I previously saw as flaws because it isn't like most art I am now learning to see as my style. I no longer wish to live up to what's online but I just wanna be happy with my own art.
Does anybody use the term "pro-shipper" unironically who is mature enough to take seriously as a critic of... anything? The first I encountered it was teenagers getting mad about the age gap in the ship between the over-30-year-old leads of a show about a cannibal serial killer. But seriously, everybody should just get off Tiktok, nothing good comes of trying to build a community on a site that happily surfaces stuff to you based on how many people like you got mad at it.
Yk as a artist that started out drawing in the "generic" wc style and being called lazy and having my styled called ugly when I started drawing humans, this really hit hard. Many times before I've been pushed into a self hating and depressed hole because I joined a "beginner artist" community to find out it was toxic because someone didn't draw in the way they wanted or that I was the odd one out bc everyone there was talented artists that just didn't have a following and were very rude It's the same with closed character species where they'll have a guest artist sign up time but it always the same styles or artists that get picked bc it gives the group more attention instead of letting younger or not fully proud of their art people try it out and see if they like it because in the end you can always delete or trade off a character if you don't like it Also side note I hate people criticizing people for using programs like ibis paint, not everyone has access to a decent laptop or tablet and not every kid has $50 to spend on clip studio or procreate
I’m glad I grew up with deviantart, but i still didn’t post my art all that much because I didn’t think it was good enough. I stopped drawing for years, and now I’m not even sure I care about art anymore. I can’t imagine being 13 right now, or even 33 starting to draw for the first time, and seeing this crap online from other artists, especially artists one idolizes.
It happens, I've been on dA before it went to shit with the eclipse update. Now the site is dead and while yeah, I'm deeply stagnated, I find comfort in how dead this site is, no hate, no love, just true neutrality. Is it miserable? F*ck yeah it is, but I would rather have silence than bullying.
@@marir.s3620 yes, even before it was dead, there was a lot of neutrality. I didn’t get much interaction at all, only from friends that were also artists in school with me. Apathy/silence is definitely preferable to bullying.
hey man not to be creepy but have you ever tried asmr your voice is really soothing, and I feel like it could make a good side hustle for u. Happy new year btw!!!!
We all know the phrase “Rome wasn’t built in a day” nor were professional artists. So my question is.. why are there full grown adults who are out here bullying children, children who have had *half* the experience they have. And if a child posts one of their artworks, it’s obvious that they would have been pretty proud of it, otherwise.. why would they have posted it? So if people are going to make fun of children’s artwork and get views from them literally bullying a minor, I just think that’s really messed up.
Agree 100% I think there should be some sort of unspoken or spoken rule for us artists that unless someone is being actually problematic and hurtful, we should just be kind to each other and have some empathy, especially towards beginner artists. We should rather praise each other for trying to make something instead of breaking each other down. Love your vids, Mohammed!
Can there be an “anti-artlore” trend where artist who know what they’re talking about takes the same art image used in an artlore tic tok and make short commending the art/artist then in a nice, tactful way, say something like, “ hey nice attempt here, your stylization is fun and a little weird. If you’d like to level up, here is what you can do.” ?
I use ArtTok occasionally if I need inspo or if I’m trying to draw the bane of my existence (hands). The bullying is REAL. It’s awful. Saw a girl getting bullied because she used a slightly too light of a shade on her fanart (it’s not like she can magically color pick it traditionally). It was maybe a shade lighter and you couldn’t really tell, unless they were super closely examined. She was getting so much hate.
Don't post your shit for strangers. Post for friends. Your friends will support your art journey every step of the way. Especially if they're artists as well.
The art community has always been toxic (even the old masters fought like crazy and art critics were cruel) but social media has given people who don’t have anything kind to say an even bigger platform. When can the art community just be artists complimenting and helping out other artists?
hello there im a 15 yr old beginner and i ve been watching your vids i must say they are really helpful and you just earnedd a SUBB !!! yours truly a young persorn ;)
Hi, unrelated to the topic but I just wanted to say I really appreciate the subtitles! I’m partially deaf so while I can still hear and converse normally, I prefer reading things so it’s easier for me to understand people. I don’t usually trust auto-subtitles so I’m really grateful you went the extra mile to subtitle the video.
I think that featured clip at 4:18 perfectly sums up why this new "ArtLore" BS is... well, BS. "But artlore isn't about bullying new artists, it's about calling out terrible human beings in the art community it's just an add on that their art is bad." Ironically, that quote comes from a TikTokker using a blatantly awful style and chicken scratch. They're also dismissing the inherent bigotry of artlore itself (any human is capable of change, I firmly believe this). Most artists with "bad" art are, indeed, beginners. Most art beginners are literal children who may not know any better than being "terrible human beings" (and what an awful title to force upon CHILDREN). They may have had one point though: Maybe artlore "isn't about bullying new artists"--it's about harassing minors and spreading misinformation and bigotry.
It’s horrible. I’ve been drawing for about 4 years, and I’ve greatly improved over time. It’s still not the best, but I’m genuinely proud how far I’ve come. Beginner artists are awesome and they shouldn’t be bullied for their art.
@@t1mburt0nsdandruffI just started drawing and I think I might be doing pretty good so far, I started to draw shapes as different body parts for characters. But now I am starting to make the body a little bit more realistic. Otherwise, I can agree with you. Oh and off topic, but I love your pfp! I love watching Tim Burton!
What is funny is that "terrible people" is such a broad stroke say r*pists, gr**mers, murderers... because honestly just saying "terrible people" DOES NOT CUT IT!
Huh, I remember trying to improve for a while and then I just gave up and now I do not take art nearly as seriously anymore. So I cannot - Draw certain poses - Draw certain backgrounds - Draw certain places - Draw many objects (ranging from pencil to car to everything else) - Draw any facial expressions besides neutral or smiling - Draw what I see when it comes to faces - Shade - Highlight - Handle lighting in any way - Draw most poses - Draw certain body parts - Draw any complex angles (from behind is already difficult for me) - Draw any animals - Draw some clothes - Draw how clothing interacts with anything (including folds) - Handle colours in a pleasant way I am these people’s worst nightmare. As I have been a hobby artist for 15 years now. But no matter how much criticism I receive in real life (never online, I avoid social media like the plague), I cannot bring myself to care. I feel, the moment I will start drawing other things than the usual, it will ruin art for me. I am already pleased with my limited abilities currently. ☺️♥️
I despise how much of a trend this trashy behaviour has become, I literally cant grow as an artist due to this behaviour being so normalised and hurting artists such as myself. Instagram is also so rude about this stuff. Twitter has its issues but atleast had a bit of support there
Say it with me, everybody! Critique is not always necessary and can be harmful if done incorrectly or in the wrong setting! Just because it's public doesn't mean you need to make a public comment on it!
I cant understand how artist mfs can act so wholesome and cutesy in the art community then 5 seconds later be toxic as hell and go witchhunt someone off a platform
This shit right here is why i don't have tiktok even though it's not just on tiktok but most of it is 5:53 yeah people online don't know how to do that anymore it's like they HAVE to- no they NEED to say something like no you don't if you don't like someone's art just mute/block them you will never see their art again but apparently that's to much to ask
As a complete outsider looking in only via your channels great videos, this feels cyclical. At this point I think social media as a whole is doomed for posting art. I feel like the only feasible way the art community could get past this is if there was a heavily moderated place on social media where artists could feel free to post their work without receiving unwanted criticism.
TikTok's art community sounds like an out of control kindergarten class. I wanna go in there and use my dad voice to settle them down. Great video, thanks for shining a light on this.
honestly your videos really help me feel better about my art, I'm a beginner artist and whenever I would draw I could never finish a single drawing because I would immediately notice every single thing wrong with it and just compare it to other artists but I started putting your videos on in the background and it honestly has really helped, hearing you talk about how nobody starts out good has made me feel so much better and I've started to actually finish my drawings, thanks for continuing to upload videos :)
@@edgechan exactly. There would be big drama and it was something simple like a trace or oc that looked too simmilar. But now people are straight up attacking each other? And i have a bad feeling they are artists too not just trolls and that is devastating. I was chronicly on da 16 or so years back but even that wasnt like this. Posting anything shouldn't be scary, especially for new artists
sooo glad i'm old enough that social media wasn't a huge thing when i started out with drawing. that way i didn't start posting my art online until 2009 when i was like 16 and had 4 years of practice under my belt already. even back then, people would absolutely bully beginner artists and "fix" art but not in such an extent. you've always needed thick skin to get by online. i think the best thing to do is always call out the bullying and support the person who has been targeted. give them love and kind words!
At this point I'm not sure why Tiktok even still has an art community. Just seems like such a terrible experience being on there, and it's damaging to the well-being of young and growing artists. I feel people go on tiktok solely to bully others and find enjoyment in that, which is sad.
I am really excited to start my first webtoon, but I am also very scared of the internet, I am considering not looking at comments because I am terrible at dealing with confrontation. People don't always post for criticism.

happy new year!!!!
I completely agree with this! Seeing other’s art journeys always make me so happy.
You're a sweet lil bean and I agree 100%
I watch my 8-year old cousin draw and get so excited for her
I took an art class last semester too
There were people who were insanely good and people who didn’t know what they were doing but literally everyone improved through the class
Literally! I absolutely love watching people's growth and I love everytime I come across beginner artists! It's so cool :3
At this point it feels like people just can't draw, show their art, or be artists on TikTok anymore without being shit on and bullied, holy shit 💀

It's crazy how these art lore people make fun of other artists as if they were never beginner artists 💀💀
The ego and audacity of these people is wild

Those people that bully can't even draw.
@malhadadoepigonothey aren’t that good either but they think cause they have followers, some views and likes that they are better than anyone else or validates their opinions about other peoples work.
@@iAmNothingnessOr don't WANT to draw.
This. I remember frequenting deviantart in the late 00s, and any smaller artist with some modicum of popularity would get torn apart.
@@trashcatlinol THIS. It's always been a thing, it's just more easier to do it now sadly.
Nah I hate unsolicited criticism I'm so glad most art groups I'm in don't tolerate it
I remember being like 12 and getting really excited about my art, and possibly getting up the confidence to enter the art community online, but after exploring around was quickly put off and scared away by what I saw.
It's great.
@@nomoretwitterhandlesis this baylee jae’s video? Or someone else? I remember being shocked when someone said that even in a working perspective.
Same and alors snapchat
The only time i’ve seen people shitting on beginner artists on UA-cam shorts is when said beginner artists are pretending to know everything and think they’re the best artist on the platform, and the comments are just dragging them back down to earth.
I am scared of TikTok though
U'd think the art community would have stopped bullying children after the "rating/reviewing" OCs/Fanfiction/Fanart/Etc tumblr blogs stopped being popular Ten Years Ago bc everyone realised bullying children is cringe
Seriously worry that today's kids are deciding bullying is actually terrific mostly *because* adults told them it was bad. 😩
The problem is that every new wave of young people has to learn that
I think another reason why people bully other artists is because they're jealous of the attention.
TikTok trends are doing more damage to artists than AI art ever could, not even joking.
fr no kidding
couldn't have said it better
At least with AI you can laugh at bad "drawn" hands because they were made by a computer. A badly drawn hands done by an artist means they are still learning (and let's be honest, hands can be hard to draw).
While ai can be used for inspiration and helping artist learn to be creative
Art lore only destroy artists self esteem and make beginner artist fear sharing their works
Hard disagree. trends come and go and people often call them out for being stupid. Ai image generation could make art disappear

I don't have Tumblr, but I still do this on like, every social I have, even Pinterest. "I don't want to see content about this, so I'm removing it from my feed. bye!"
it's sad that such common sense isn't so common anymore.
Lmao.

Remember that most of tik tok users don't know how to use the Internet. Just tik tok. They lack internet etiquette.

some people are not thinking the way normal people think and its sad
The solution to this Tiktok issue is to just delete the app and forget about it lol

True, not everybody views art the same. You can just scroll if you don’t like something, I wish people had more common sense 😭
I don't even care whether posting art stuff on TikTok will helped get me noticed by employers or whatever, I am *never* joining that septic tank of an app if this is what happens to artists on there.

I had to leave that place bc i shared my opinion on a mlp character and ppl started to harass me 💀
Tiktok is just hellsite.
Whenever I give feedback on something i see online, I give advice as to what i think would make it look better, as opposed to what i think looks bad
Most people appreciate it, and for the ones that don’t, I just delete my comment and move on
I’m glad that person seems to have gotten useful advice out of your notes!
every month or two a Tik Tok community has to walk up to a chalkboard and repeatedly write down an obvious lesson they should have known (like: don't bully, don't be weird, etc.)
that platform is cursed
Art lore sounds like another way for kids to display their sociopathic tendencies holy f
This is a good reminder to all of us.
I dislike a lot of my old art but I always look at it in terms of how far I’ve come. Everyone has rough patches but if you antagonize people about that it dosent help anybody.

Looking at your art bring me nostalgia of my art 8 years ago 🥺❤
I always am afraid people will judge and criticize me. but people kept on telling me that i needed to learn anatomy because my art is too simple, then they did similar things that i see done in this video with the "artlore"
thank you so so much for bringing this to light, because i've not finished a drawing in 3 years, desperately trying to "fix" my art to their liking and not to mine, it was not fun.
but thanks to you i have the courage to have fun in art again
thank you :)
i'm actually so glad that i didn't post my art on tiktok.. i feel bad for the other beginner artists (like me) who have been bullied off of the platform. i might never have a tiktok account because of what's happening in the art community
I came across an artist and she was like around 11-13 and she was just showing her art (she was a beginner) she got so much hate and "new art lore dropped"
I felt so bad for her
I used to love drawing, and i can say i think i was pretty good.
I’ve been posting art there and I’ve seen positive reception :D
I’ll be sure to avoid TikTok though, I’m a beginner and I feel scared at times to post my own art at times.

Remember when the government gave us false hope and said they were shutting down TikTok. God I wish they went through with it. 😔
wouldn’t the toxicity just go elsewhere?
@@wittykittywoes fr
@wittykittywoes first it was twitter then its tiktok.
Rats gotta be malfesting somewhere.
Specially to beginner artists who are TRYING to improve but instead get called names, slurs, bullied, or even accused of being something awful just because their art style "Looks" like something
Use the "Proshipper" art style issue as an example for that
So many young artists ended up quitting due to how toxic the art community on that site is.
you really never know how a style will develop and the more I've seen the original of the "rendering process" one, the more it looks fine, you literally just have to get use to it.
Most of the people insulting these artists probably aren’t even artists themselves
The special thing about art is that it's not perfect.
Many times before I've been pushed into a self hating and depressed hole because I joined a "beginner artist" community to find out it was toxic because someone didn't draw in the way they wanted or that I was the odd one out bc everyone there was talented artists that just didn't have a following and were very rude
It's the same with closed character species where they'll have a guest artist sign up time but it always the same styles or artists that get picked bc it gives the group more attention instead of letting younger or not fully proud of their art people try it out and see if they like it because in the end you can always delete or trade off a character if you don't like it
Also side note I hate people criticizing people for using programs like ibis paint, not everyone has access to a decent laptop or tablet and not every kid has $50 to spend on clip studio or procreate
Happy new year btw!!!!
hahah i haven't Maybe one day..now i gotta learn how to scratch metal objects and shuffle nylon together
I'm not surprised something like this would happen because the art community is full of nice people not good people.
And to remember nice ≠ good
Maybe they meant they act like they are nice ppl but they arent good @@movagalbastomp
It’s full of trans people
Can there be an “anti-artlore” trend where artist who know what they’re talking about takes the same art image used in an artlore tic tok and make short commending the art/artist then in a nice, tactful way, say something like, “ hey nice attempt here, your stylization is fun and a little weird.
Who cares ignore it
@@reginaldforthright805 You are part of the problem. Do better
Don't post your shit for strangers. Post for friends. Your friends will support your art journey every step of the way. Especially if they're artists as well.
I agree
speaking fax brother! majority of my friends are artist and they always encourage me no matter what being both a good supporter and critic
Nah not even my family or friends would lol
The art community has always been toxic (even the old masters fought like crazy and art critics were cruel) but social media has given people who don’t have anything kind to say an even bigger platform. When can the art community just be artists complimenting and helping out other artists?
hello there im a 15 yr old beginner and i ve been watching your vids i must say they are really helpful and you just earnedd a SUBB !!!
yours truly
a young persorn ;)
Never heared of art lore but NICE VIDEO KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK ! AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!
Thanks!
@@MohammedAgbadi OMG THANKS FOR REPLYING ! I love your videos !
I think that featured clip at 4:18 perfectly sums up why this new "ArtLore" BS is... well, BS.
"But artlore isn't about bullying new artists, it's about calling out terrible human beings in the art community it's just an add on that their art is bad."
Ironically, that quote comes from a TikTokker using a blatantly awful style and chicken scratch.
'im just a guy drawing boys on the internet' my mom saw the drawings and looked at me weird.. (THAT ART IS AMAZING THOUGH)
Step 1: Stay off Tiktok
Step 2: See step 1
Huh, I remember trying to improve for a while and then I just gave up and now I do not take art nearly as seriously anymore.
So I cannot
- Draw certain poses
- Draw certain backgrounds
- Draw certain places
- Draw many objects (ranging from pencil to car to everything else)
- Draw any facial expressions besides neutral or smiling
- Draw what I see when it comes to faces
- Shade
- Highlight
- Handle lighting in any way
- Draw most poses
- Draw certain body parts
- Draw any complex angles (from behind is already difficult for me)
- Draw any animals
- Draw some clothes
- Draw how clothing interacts with anything (including folds)
- Handle colours in a pleasant way
I am these people’s worst nightmare.
I’ve been waiting for this so long 👹👹👹
les goooo!!!!
I hate terminally online hypersocialised “artists” so much it’s unreal.
I despise how much of a trend this trashy behaviour has become, I literally cant grow as an artist due to this behaviour being so normalised and hurting artists such as myself.
Instagram is also so rude about this stuff. Twitter has its issues but atleast had a bit of support there
Great video! I know you use it all the time but can't help but point out how funny it is that you used Bully sountrack in this video lmao
Say it with me, everybody! Critique is not always necessary and can be harmful if done incorrectly or in the wrong setting! Just because it's public doesn't mean you need to make a public comment on it!
Something everyone should know and remember:
*One man's trash is another man's treasure and not everyone has the same preference.*
I cant understand how artist mfs can act so wholesome and cutesy in the art community then 5 seconds later be toxic as hell and go witchhunt someone off a platform
Thank you for talking about this.
any time!!
Thank God I left tiktok, not because of how toxic the community is, because how exhausting it is to post videos constantly
this is why posting your art on UA-cam or Pinterest is way better
This shit right here is why i don't have tiktok even though it's not just on tiktok but most of it is
5:53 yeah people online don't know how to do that anymore it's like they HAVE to- no they NEED to say something like no you don't if you don't like someone's art just mute/block them you will never see their art again but apparently that's to much to ask
I've only recently stumbled on this channel (and also recently started art), but this channel is an absolute gem and very relaxing to listen to
TikTok's art community sounds like an out of control kindergarten class.
Never heard of art lore.........this is weird........i feel old. I was literally bullied to tears recently. Now it makes sense......
Same. Back in my old days there was OC dramas, reposts or art theft but mostly in dA.
I'm not sure why TikTok even still exists 💀
I am really excited to start my first webtoon, but I am also very scared of the internet, I am considering not looking at comments because I am terrible at dealing with confrontation. People don't always post for criticism.
I'm so glad i don't use TikTok
me too...
I appreciate the captions
You just give more reasons to stay away of TikTok. Thank you!
