This is an excerpt from Al's terrific video lesson, "Appalachian Fingerstyle Guitar in DADGAD Tuning: Volume 1: Hymns, Blues, Celtic and Banjo Tunes."
The ringing strings and open voicings of DADGAD produce an ethereal, almost magical guitar sound. In Al Petteway’s masterful hands, well-known Southern Mountain songs and instrumentals are given a new treatment, brought to life with fresh new harmonies and inventive fingerpicking.
Al shows you how easy it is to play in DADGAD and how this tuning can enhance even the most familiar song. You’ll find it exciting and fun to learn blues/fingerpicking favorites inspired by Doc Watson, Etta Baker and Merle Travis; explore the rich harmonies and haunting melodies of ancient Sacred Harp shape-note hymns; play hard-driving banjo tunes; and imitate the Scots/Irish bagpipe and fiddle sounds that are the Celtic roots of Appalachian music. Al offers a myriad of guitar techniques and numerous tips on musicianship and style that will enhance everything you do on the guitar.

I came across Al's lovely arrangement of this piece a couple of years back and tried my hand at learning it but I guess my skill level or attention span wasn't co-operating so I passed it by. I rediscovered it last week and this time worked it out. It's definitely a piece for those who are very comfortable picking and want to discover the world of DADGAD. My only reservation is DVD instruction, yes they're great if you want to take the shortcut route - but do your best to work it out from simply listening to the piece first, yes i know for some it's hard but it's an important skill you have to learn when serving your apprenticeship as a guitar player - Good Luck !!

Love hearing these stories of successful travel along the road to fingerstyle. Well done, and keep playing.
It's funny how you come across something that stumped you in a previous season, and discover that you've gained enough skill since then that it's now become something manageable. Proof that you're progressing, even if it feels sometimes like you're not :)
      You should upload a rendition.

Drones, my man. That's the Scotch-Irish hillpeople thing. Fill a chord out with drone tones, so it like never taking a breath. If you ever listen to dulcimer, or in Scotland (or a Ren fair) hurdy gurdie, you'll hear it there too.

Very Nice Al:), Ive just finished it, well, still adding ornamentation, but its an easy tune:). You say it does not "hurt", with the strings tuned lower?? This is a real important issue with me. Playing mostly electric for near 40 years, acoustics ARE def harder on the fingers:/ Mine have got REAL tough, real fast, lol. I looked hard for the right[easy] action, found it in a Fender..butter smooth:) What are YOU playing Al???

I tested the guitar tabs at FREE-SCORES.COM but it's not exactly the same as the video. I think Bergeron did his best in notating Petteway's music, but it's good enough for me. You have to add the bends and a few notes to duplicate the video. By the way, you can slow down the UA-cam video to half speed to get his fingering right. It would be interesting if you all have an extension to this short 2:36 minute piece. Maybe an intro or another segment. I'd like to hear from you.
